McCain, Palin hammer the LA Times over the Khalidi tape; Update: Video added
posted at 3:35 pm on October 29, 2008 by Allahpundit
I held off on this for hours in hopes that there’d be A/V of them on the stump, but wouldn’t you know it, no luck.
No matter. Obama’s radical associations + lefty media conspiracy = crazy delicious.
“Apparently this is a tape with a dinner that Mr. Ayers, the former, and now still, unrepentant terrorist, who was at, and also the, one of the leading spokespersons for the PLO. Now, why that should not be made public is beyond me,” McCain told La Kalle radio.
“I guarantee you, if there was a tape with me and Sarah Palin and some neo-Nazi or one of those, you think that that tape wouldn’t be made public? Of course, Americans need to know, particularly about Ayers, and also about the PLO. So hopefully there will be enough pressure on the L.A. Times that it’ll come out, but its really unfortunate that we have to go through this,” McCain continued…
Palin said she wants to know how Obama responded to derogatory comments said about Israel and America’s support for its ally during the party.
“Israel was described there as the perpetrator of terrorism instead of the victim. What we don’t know, what we don’t know, is how Barack Obama responded to these slurs on a country that he now professes to support, and the reason is the newspaper that has the tape, The Los Angeles Times, refuses to release it,” she said. “It must be nice for a candidate to have major news organizations looking after his best interests like that.”
The “reward” for the tape is up to $150,000 while the RNC has already elevated Khalidi to all-star F.O.B. status. I was skeptical at first that anything useful would come from it even if it was released, but now that Maverick’s made an issue of it to build suspense, a clip showing The One demonstrating that first-class temperament of his by sitting there placidly while some tool recites a poem “accusing the Israeli government of terrorism in its treatment of Palestinians” would be fun viewing during the run-up to Tuesday. Think of it as a proxy for the Wright attack McCain refuses to make: Same basic parameters — Obama cuddling up to a radical whose criticism of America and its allies is a bit more fragrant than voters are accustomed to — but safely stripped of black/white racial politics and ensconced within a defense of Israel. If the tape surfaces, you won’t need to play connect the dots by bringing up Wright and Ayers. Voters will do it themselves.
In lieu of McPalin video, here’s Fox News chatting about the tape with someone from the Media Research Center. FYI, the only source I know of for what he says about babysitting is WND, and their sources were unnamed.
Update: You’ll find the ‘Cuda calling the Times Obama’s “pet newspaper” in the second clip here.

Slightly off topic (but on topic of Obama being a nut): AP, Rush played great audio of Obama during that 2001 Chicago radio interview in which he said he sees shades of Nazi-ism creeping into America (no, really). Something like:
“you’ve got the doctrines of Nazism that we are fighting against that are start looking uncomfortably similar to what’s going on back here at home.”
If you could get that audio, well, in the words of Ali G: “Booyakasha.”
Pasalubong on October 29, 2008 at 3:41 PM
I wouldn’t be surprised if the McCain campaign is counting on the LAT not releasing the tape, hoping that everyone concludes that it must be really bad if they are willing to take all the heat and still not release the tape.
rw on October 29, 2008 at 3:41 PM
At this point it might be worse for Obama if the LA Times continues to refuse to release the tape. It could keep this story going through Nov 4th. Maybe enough to create some cold feet among Obama voters. Looks like a win-win either way.

When McCain wins, do we think he’ll demonstrate that the LA Times is extremely partisan, and thus not worthy of a spot in the White House Press room? Nope. He’ll probably put them in the front row, to make sure that everyone knows he’s a wonderful guy.

I don’t think the LA Times can be shamed into doing anything, they have no shame.

Oink on October 29, 2008 at 3:47 PM
as said by Sarah Palin. And who has more standing to say it?
tom on October 29, 2008 at 3:47 PM
OK. I’m calling it early. It’s over. Obama by a lot. 330 Electoral votes, likely more. Six days left and McCain’s priority is leaning on a newspaper to release a video that few people outside his solid base will care about. If people didn’t care about Ayers, they won’t care about Khalidi.
Big S on October 29, 2008 at 3:48 PM
You can bet the the LAT has weighed the consequences. If they hold onto it, it would suggest that it is a lot worse for Obama then anyone could imagine. They would figure that whatever McCain could do with the inference, is not nearly as bad as the facts.
The more LAT stalls, the more I see this as a real “election turner”…but only if they release it before the weekend. They may release it on Saturday afternoon, too late for Sunday editions, and too close to the elections to have the real effect.

I read on several sites that there’s a prayer at the beginning of the dinner where the guests are on prayer rugs (Michelle’s butt is in the air, don’t ask) facing Mecca, while Barry is reading a recitation from the Koran.
The other version is that Barry is helping his daughter read the recitation, while Michelle’s arm is outstretched in a Nazi salute.
Maybe it’s best we don’t see the tape. Ugly stuff like that would be sad to see.

It’s bad for Obama either way. McCain-Palin and others can keep raising the question – what’s in the tape? What DID Obama say in support of Khalidi? Were Ayers and Dorhn there? Were they supportive? Raise all kinds of questions with no answers. They can simply ask what the rest of us want to know. If there was NOTHING in that tape, Obama would insist it be aired immediately because this story is getting some legs to it and if there’s NOTHING in that tape, he would want to put a stop to this story imediately. He’s NOT doing that, the LAT isn’t budging, and we’ve got a lot of unanswered questions. Hopefully this will make it onto CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS – or at least one or two of the stations. We need MIDDLE AMERICA people to get wind of this – not just blogosphere types.

Your sentiments are admirable, but I can think of something that would be a lot sadder to see. It also involves Barack Obama, a religious tome, and an outstretched arm.
Roll that tape. America needs to see this, needs to avoid the awful mistake it stands on the verge of making, and needs to confront the complicity of the electorate in bringing a creature like this so close to the White House. No favors are done by letting a scoundrel slink off into the night with a few scraps of his reputation still intact.
The only way to purge the Obama poison from the body politic is to be honest about what it is, and how it got there. America needs two vibrant political parties, not a totalitarian regime and an underground resistance.

This is the paper that the just a couple of days before the election, Fong had a picture of him coming out of an adult video store, it was front page, ran on TV over and over, front page for two straight days, the same grainy picture…enough to sink him in a tight race.
LAT knows what a picture can do, and they know what a video can do…and they ain’t going to do it to their boy.
right2bright on October 29, 2008 at 4:00 PM
The polls are only tightening because many current “undecideds” that were previously McCain voters are returning to form. Obama’s still above 50% in most polls, and PA is not in play unless you believe rumors of super duper secret McCain leads. Otherwise, the public polls show Obama up 7-10 points. The McCain campaign is starting to sound a lot like this.

I tend to agree. The fact that LA Times sits on the tape is the real problem. If it was an innocent recording it would have been released by now. other way why the secrecy and the stuborness. Remember how McCain sucked the wind out of the DNCC and Obama’s Invesco Field speech with the Palin roll-out? It seems that by chatting up the tape, McCain and Palin already have people buzzing about it in a manner similar to the morning after Obama’s speech. Here, however, it’s a buzz that he creating before Obama’s presentation possibly followed by a crusher afterward.
It’d be great to see Obama incur the time and expense of putting on tonight’s dog-and-pony show only to have it blow up in his face with the release of the tape.
