McCain, Palin hammer the LA Times over the Khalidi tape; Update: Video added

posted at 3:35 pm on October 29, 2008 by Allahpundit

I held off on this for hours in hopes that there’d be A/V of them on the stump, but wouldn’t you know it, no luck.

No matter. Obama’s radical associations + lefty media conspiracy = crazy delicious.

“Apparently this is a tape with a dinner that Mr. Ayers, the former, and now still, unrepentant terrorist, who was at, and also the, one of the leading spokespersons for the PLO. Now, why that should not be made public is beyond me,” McCain told La Kalle radio.

“I guarantee you, if there was a tape with me and Sarah Palin and some neo-Nazi or one of those, you think that that tape wouldn’t be made public? Of course, Americans need to know, particularly about Ayers, and also about the PLO. So hopefully there will be enough pressure on the L.A. Times that it’ll come out, but its really unfortunate that we have to go through this,” McCain continued…

Palin said she wants to know how Obama responded to derogatory comments said about Israel and America’s support for its ally during the party.

“Israel was described there as the perpetrator of terrorism instead of the victim. What we don’t know, what we don’t know, is how Barack Obama responded to these slurs on a country that he now professes to support, and the reason is the newspaper that has the tape, The Los Angeles Times, refuses to release it,” she said. “It must be nice for a candidate to have major news organizations looking after his best interests like that.”

The “reward” for the tape is up to $150,000 while the RNC has already elevated Khalidi to all-star F.O.B. status. I was skeptical at first that anything useful would come from it even if it was released, but now that Maverick’s made an issue of it to build suspense, a clip showing The One demonstrating that first-class temperament of his by sitting there placidly while some tool recites a poem “accusing the Israeli government of terrorism in its treatment of Palestinians” would be fun viewing during the run-up to Tuesday. Think of it as a proxy for the Wright attack McCain refuses to make: Same basic parameters — Obama cuddling up to a radical whose criticism of America and its allies is a bit more fragrant than voters are accustomed to — but safely stripped of black/white racial politics and ensconced within a defense of Israel. If the tape surfaces, you won’t need to play connect the dots by bringing up Wright and Ayers. Voters will do it themselves.

In lieu of McPalin video, here’s Fox News chatting about the tape with someone from the Media Research Center. FYI, the only source I know of for what he says about babysitting is WND, and their sources were unnamed.

Update: You’ll find the ‘Cuda calling the Times Obama’s “pet newspaper” in the second clip here.

What interests me is this supposition that the LAT has the only copy of this tape. There has to be more than one out there.

AubieJon on October 29, 2008 at 4:24 PM

If he does have it, I suppose the smart thing is to pull it out just after Obama has used his half-hour on whatever it is that he wants to talk about tonight. Remember how McCain sucked the wind out of the DNCC and Obama’s Invesco Field speech with the Palin roll-out? It seems that by chatting up the tape, McCain and Palin already have people buzzing about it in a manner similar to the morning after Obama’s speech. Here, however, it’s a buzz that he creating before Obama’s presentation possibly followed by a crusher afterward.

It’s possible but let’s see. If they have it they can release it before or after the 30 minutes circus and glory to the only one that is going to be aired tonight. And I wonder:who is watching baseball anyway? For me there is nthing more boring. But I have an excuse I was raised and lived in Europe for many years.

Don’t forget how the LA Times tried to torpedo Arnold Schwarzenegger’s campaign in the last week with completely fabricated allegations of sexual harrassment. Or how it dropped info a couple of weeks before the 1992 election about Bruce Herschenson allegedly buying porn. The Times has had no standards when it comes to last minute bombshells that hurt Republicans.

rockmom on October 29, 2008 at 4:27 PM

I thought Sam Zell bought the paper a few years back.

What’s the deal Sam?

Are you hoping Osama wins so the economy will crash and you can buy up huge swaths of real estate from the RTC again?

Ohhh, right. Desperation.

Dave Rywall on October 29, 2008 at 3:49 PM

You’re lucky Dave, you won’t have to live here when Obama is made PotUS. The real stupidity is in the ignoring of signs placed right in front of the voters…kind of like how Barney Frank is called a “maestro” by Nancy Pelosi for his economic prowess, you know, the one that led to the Fannie Mae fiasco that has the whole worlds’ economy tumbling?

I’m pretty sure the other countries of the world will be only too happy to see the downfall of the US in coming years. Back to the middle-ages for all of us…

Geministorm on October 29, 2008 at 4:33 PM

If the GOP/McCain had a copy they could NOT release it, without accusations of tampering.
No way… just keep the buzz/pressure out !!

If this were a neo nazi tape with a Republican candidate, just the suggestion of video would be enough to send the media into a feeding frenzy.

I’m gobsmacked! You’re watching Obama tonight instead of what might possibly be the last game of the World Series? Consider the relative importance and quality of life symbolism of the two events. Please reconsider and enrich your life in a way that will last forever.

Maybe someone could dig up a video of McCain when he was chairman of the board of the Woods Foundation that gave Khaladi’s Palestinian research center $448,873 in grant money.

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME TV RIGHT THERE

Dave Rywall on October 29, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Bruce Hershenson was another that was targeted by the LAT, of course he was the worse, a conservative Jew (the only thing worse is a conservative “black”). Couple of days before the election they “surprised” him, why he also had gone to see a strip movie…and no he wasn’t a “hyprocrite” he believed (like the LAT did)in seeing a X rated movie once in a while. The LAT took ads from them and promoted them on their movie page at the time.

Actually I was thinking to skip the events and check something on Discovery or on Qvc. I saw a lot of movies made about “the dear leader” in my childhood and teen years in my native comunist Romania. I don’t have the stomach to digest it. As about the World Series, I might look a little to see who wins.

I wouldn’t cite WND or Aaron Klein (who wrote that piece you reference) as a source. Aaron is well known to fabricate what he doesn’t plagiarize and plagiarize what he doesn’t fabricate.

Aaron had to retract a story he made up claiming that FOX News paid $2 million ransom for two reporters captured by Palestinians. Not true. He ripped off three articles from me thus far, one almost word for word. He’s ripped off Sweetness and Light and other sites repeatedly, too. And his book contained an entire passage plagiarized from me, down to an error I made and couldn’t correct (because it was in an old template of my site I now can’t access), which he also copied. Israeli intelligence and journalists laugh at him because he either makes up stuff in his Jerusalem apartment or copies Israeli newspaper articles. Then, there’s Aaron’s claim that he is an Orthodox Jew. Everything about the guy is fraudulent.

Debbie Schlussel on October 29, 2008 at 4:53 PM

More on Aaron Klein and WND:

* How Aaron Klein ripped off Sweetness & Light (just one example);

* Aaron ripping off my article on Obama’s Nation of Islam ties, almost word for word, then calling it an “exclusive”

* Aaron Klein rips me off (complete with error repeated) for his book;

* Aaron repeatedly rips off BizzyBlog and Sweetness & Light.

Apparently you don’t understand degrees of separation. Giving a grant (for Afhgan freedom) to an organization that was started by Ibrahim Abu Lughod, Abdul Latif Akel, Hisham Awartani,Sa’id Kan’an,Rashid Khalidi,Raja Shehadeh, Khalil Shakaki,(and 7 other trustees,so out of 14, you have one defect) and still funded after Khalidi was kicked out… is miles apart from sitting at a table honoring him, while a poet is “damning” the existence of Israel, and breaking bread with two notorious anti-American terrorists who killed American citizens (not military, but citizens) and attempted to kill many others.
As I said…your post is weak…

right2bright on October 29, 2008 at 5:35 PM

Hening on October 29, 2008 at 5:15 PM

Yep, that’s what I’m thinkin’. Handed the LAT a ticking bomb is what that particular candidate did, and they couldn’t resist playing a little peek-a-boo. I assume the LAT is looking at history of aforementioned candidate’s possible association with past administrations and really, really, really, does want to protect itself. Doesn’t mean Debbie is wrong about the original source, but there was no incentive for the source to pass it to the media. OTOH, aforementioned candidate could have purchased it.

The organization was started back in the ’60’s I believe, to further the cause of democracy in Cuba, and elsewhere. It has very noble motives.

Dave disappears and comes back with the newest talking points from his master. He’s a shill. This is probably the worst two weeks for the Obamessiah of his whole campaign, and you have all his flunkys like Dave desperately running around trying to put out the fires.

So bad all this sh*t is happening to Barry just before the election. And Harper won in Canada. Dave, think CUBA.

right2bright on October 29, 2008 at 5:35 PM

yes, Drywall’s post was weak because he is, as a rule

He says he’s Canadian, but when asked questions about Canadian politics he ignores it replies in vague generalities–yet it obsessed with spouting leftist crap on an American conservative blog

In making his weak points, he never uses Canada or life in Canada as a reference–which is something most Cananidians often do, often as a way of demonstrating that they are distinct from America and Americans

But ol’ Dave, he just wallows around here like a Native….

Janos Hunyadi on October 29, 2008 at 5:45 PM

OK, back around 1948, Palestinians made wild claims that the Israelis were raping and killing civilians, so that other Arab countries would send their army to defend the Palestinians, guess what? The Palestinians fled over fears of being raped or killed. The Palestinians did what the Israelis could not get, get the Palestinians to leave.

Tie that in with this tape. LA Times by not releasing the tape, may of done more against Obama than releasing it. All the other stuff did not stick, this likely would not of stuck also. By them withholding it, it became news. With them withholding it, it makes it seem like they are hiding something, protecting Obama.

Just my thoughts on two incidents that in some was are parallel.

I suspect the McCain campaign already has a copy of the tape and knows exactly what’s on it. Otherwise I doubt they’d have McCain and Palin both demanding to see it. There’d be too much risk of a backlash if it was released and turned out to be much ado about nothing. If they do have it we’ll see it tomorrow via Drudge or Fox News.

rsrobinson on October 29, 2008 at 6:40 PM

The money quote is

As he came in from the cold and took off his coat, I went up to greet him. He responded warmly, and volunteered, “Hey, I’m sorry I haven’t said more about Palestine right now, but we are in a tough primary race. I’m hoping when things calm down I can be more up front.” He referred to my activism, including columns I was contributing to the The Chicago Tribune critical of Israeli and US policy, “Keep up the good work!”

This quote is from the same guy who shot the photos of him and Said together at the farewell party of Rhalidi.

WoosterOh on October 29, 2008 at 6:44 PM

Dave:

You idiot. There is no way McCain would toast some terrorist. Anyone who knows anything about the man knows that. You are desperate.

Besides, go home. This is not even your damn country. Go mind your own business. As far as I am concerned the interest of people like you in seeing Obama elected is just one more reason to vote against him.

BTW, I hear that the Canadians let just about anyone in. Are you Canadian by way of Damascus?

McCain should try something outrageous like:

“According to a reliable source Senator Obama said in the tape that Israel has no God-given right to occupy Palestine and there has been genocide against the Palestinian people by Israelis.

Senator Obama, say that ain’t true. Allay my fears for the Jewish community in America and authorize the LAT to release the video in its entirety.”
