McCain ad: “TV Special”
posted at 9:05 am on October 29, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
With Barack Obama airing his 30-minute informercial on competing networks this evening, John McCain decided to reach back into his summer strategy and poke Obama’s pretentiousness in his latest ad today. “TV Special” paints Obama as an empty suit with great PR, whose natural political instincts would bring disaster:
Behind the fancy speeches, grand promises and TV special, lies the truth: With crises at home and abroad, Barack Obama lacks the experience America needs. And it shows.
His response to our economic crisis is to spend and tax our economy deeper into recession. The fact is Barack Obama’s not ready yet.
The return of the “celebrity” theme could be effective, especially with those who scratch their heads at Obama’s decision to pre-empt 30 minutes of programming — on three networks (and a few other outlets as well). Does Obama think that people would be too stupid to find it on just one? Obama could make an argument for having his 30-minute infomercial on network television, I suppose, by reversing McCain’s argument here and saying he wants people to get to know him in greater detail. The simulcast gives the ego-stroking game away.
This ad will probably only be effective for a day or two, but it’s still a good entry for Team McCain.
Update: He’s on three networks, not two (NBC, CBS, Fox), and a few ancillary outlets. It’s worse than I originally thought. Thank the Lord for HBO and TiVo.

This should have been hit so much harder. I mean this guy has spent more than any other two candidates combined…How can we expect him not to do it to you.

Why the “yet”? Bad idea.

What’s with the “…not ready…YET“?!!?
He’s not right, not ready, and in my opinion, too far into the Socialist koolaid ever to be so.
Lockstein13 on October 29, 2008 at 9:10 AM
Not ready YET??? What??? His political ideology will NEVER be ready for true-blooded Americans! You know, those of us that actually respect the Constitution, and hold on to the ideals outlined in the Declaration of Independence. Good grief, get rid of the “YET” part!!! I don’t want a repeat of this election season!

They shouldn’t have added the word ‘yet’, it accepts that he is almost qualified, as is.
cyclosarin on October 29, 2008 at 9:11 AM
I like them going back to the celebrity theme for a day. The celebrity ads were the start of the erosion of Obama’s image as a post-partisan new breed of politician. They were one of the flashes of brilliance in what has at times been a train-wreck of a campaign.
BadgerHawk on October 29, 2008 at 9:11 AM
The multiple network “big brother on all channels” makes me smirk.
My prediction: boring as hell. Even infomercials know to have some product demonstrations to liven things up.

Good primer before the ‘Super Messiah Power Half Hour’ to remind people of Baracky’s ego.
Buying up so much airtime was a mistake, people might watch a bit but if they want to switch channels they are going to find Obiffy’s ugly mug over there too, and over there, and over there.
I foresee a lot of people saying “WTF”, I just want to watch some tv and this fool is everywhere!

I just emailed the campaign about the “yet” and told them to replace it with NEVER. I’m sure it won’t do any good, but maybe if they hear from enough of us they won’t be using that word again!
ConMom on October 29, 2008 at 9:14 AM
It ends really weak. Really Weak. The retort is, well, by Jan I will be ready because I’ll have all my left wing buddies lined up for spots in the Cabinet and judiciary to reshape the negative rights of the US Constitution.
We’re done if he wins and if you cannot see that, yer stupid. He will create 12 million new democrats and conservatism will go the way of the Dodo bird. We won’t have a single voice in the Senate worth a damn. Getting a Conservative Republican elected to the WH will be damn near impossible. It’s over. Find an island to move to with better prospects. John McCain is not ready to fight – YET
jake-the-goose on October 29, 2008 at 9:17 AM
eh its going to be on a handful of cable channels also in addition to what might be three networks. Here’s the kicker though…. Obama will be joining Mr. Bill Clinton at a rally afterward. He’s pretty dumb in mixing the Clintons in his life with polls tightening toward McCain now. Hey… might be whats needed to tip the scale and keep it tipped.
I am just hoping he doesnt put voting machines in front people afterwards, like candy at the grocery checkout isle. Peopl will get home and wonder “why did I do that?” There are people who have already voted for Obama who, knowing more now, regret it and its too late to get their ballot back even though the election hasn’t concluded. This early vote stuff is a sham and is not fair to the voter before the campaining has its chance to sink into a lot of folks.
God Speed John McCain.

I got this from the comments at Ace, interesting read about how Barack might be getting his money:
-
1 Wow, I picked this up from one of the reader’s comments in the Galax Journal , re the macing of McCain campaign workers : WHO IS BEHIND BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA About six months ago, I started thinking ‘where did the money come from for Obama’. I have four daughters who went to College, and we were middle class, and money was tight. We (including my girls) worked hard and there were lots of student loans.
I started looking into Obama’s life. Around 1979 Obama started college at Occidental in California . He is very open about his two years at Occidental, he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, even though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies. ‘Barry’ (that was the name he used all his life) during this time had two roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan.
During the summer of 1981, after his second year in college, he made a ’round the world’ trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia , next Hyderabad in India, three weeks in Karachi, Pakistan where he stayed with his roommate’s family, then off to Africa to visit his father’s family. My question – Where did he get the money for this trip? Nether I nor any one of my children would have had money for a trip like this when they where in college.
When he came back he started school at Columbia University in New York . It is at this time he wants everyone to call him Barack-no longer Barry. Do you know what the tuition is at Columbia? It’s not cheap to say the least. Where did he get money for tuition? Student Loans? Maybe. After Columbia , he went to Chicago to work as a Community Organizer for $12,000 a year. Why Chicago? Why not New York? He was already living in New York.
By ‘chance’ he met Antoin ‘Tony’ Rezko, born in Leppo Syria, and a real estate developer in Chicago . Rezko was convicted of fraud and bribery this year. Rezko, was named ‘Entrepreneur of the Decade’ by the Arab-American Business and Professional Association’. About two years later, Obama entered Harvard Law School . Do you have any idea what tuition is for Harvard Law School? Where did he get the money for Law School ? More student loans?
After Law school, he went back to Chicago . Rezko offered him a job, which he turned down. But, he did take a job with Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland. Guess what? They represented ‘Rezar’ which Rezko’s firm. Rezko was one of Obama’s first major financial contributors when he ran for office in Chicago. In 2003, Rezko threw an early fundraiser for Obama which Chicago Tribune reporter David Mendelland claims was instrumental in providing Obama with ‘seed money’ for his U.S. Senate race. In 2005, Obama purchased a new home in Kenwoood District of Chicago for $1.65 million (LESS than asking price). With ALL of those Student Loans – Where did he get the money for the property? On the same day Rezko’s wife, Rita, purchased the adjoining empty lot for FULL price. The London Times reported that Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born Billionaire loaned Rezko $3.5 million three weeks before Obama’s new home was purchased. Obama met Nadhmi Auchi, many times with Rezko.
Now, we have Obama running for President. Valerie Jarrett, was Michele Obama’s boss. She is now Obama’s chief advisor and he does not make any major decisions without talking to her first. Where was Jarrett born? Ready for this? Shiraz, Iran! Do we see a pattern here? Or am I going crazy?
On May 10, 2008 The Times reported, Robert Malley advisor to Obama was ‘sacked’ after the press found out he was having regular contacts with ‘Hamas’, which controls Gaza and is connected with and backed by Iran. This past week, buried in the back part of the papers, Iraqi newspapers reported that during Obama’s visit to Iraq, he asked their leaders to do nothing about the war until after he is elected, and he will ‘Take care of things’.
Oh, and by the way, remember the college roommates that where born in Pakistan ? They are in charge of all those ‘small’ Internet campaign contribution for Obama. Where is that money coming from? The poor and middle class in this country? Or could it be from the Middle East?
And the final bit of news. On September 7, 2008, The Washington Times posted a verbal slip that was made on ‘This Week’ with George Stephanapoulos. Obama on talking about his religion said, ‘My Muslim faith’. When questioned, ‘he made a mistake’. Some mistake! All of the above information I got on line. If you would like to check:
Wikipedia, encyclopedia, Barack Obama; Tony Rezko; Valerie Jarrett: Daily Times – Obama visited Pakistan in 1981; The Washington Times – September 7, 2008; The Times May 10, 2008.
Now the BIG question – If I found out all this information on my own, Why haven’t all of our ‘intelligent’ members of the press been reporting this? A phrase that keeps ringing in my ear – ‘Beware of the enemy from within’!!!

Seriously. Make a statement and say no to indoctrination…as well as traditional media.

The yet took me aback at first but the more I think about it it makes people think about time. “Maybe not now, we can get him in next time when he’ll be a better president and show what he’s capable of.”
Of course by then he’ll show himself to be a tantrum throwing primadonna.

“Yet” was a mush-headed mistake. The point should be that an out-of-the-mainstream radical like Obama will never be qualified to lead this country, absent his having some sort of ideological transformation.

The sheer number of political ads this year has shown that it’s hard to buy an election.
The message overload ceased being informative or sway worthy months ago. Now political ads of any sort are the main reason to reach for the remote.
Although you’ll never hear this from any “reputable” source – this effort will fail. This audacious attempt at communication will be viewed much like the European tour, a net loss and an embarrassment.

If McCain has anything – anything at all – left, now’s the time to bring it out.
We’re told the press loves a close race. Well, let’s see if they pick up on these apparent shifts.
If not, then anyone who thinks the press isn’t in the tank for Obama needs to be institutionalized. Or should be given his own show on MSNBC.

I would really like to see an ad that targets BO’s fund-raising.
Dates made up. Quotes parphrased. A Real ad would research this and provide correct ones:
In April, Barack Obama promised,’to work aggressively with my Republican opponent to agree on Taxpayer funded campaign spending limits’.
He Never did. Instead he decided, ‘I need to abandon campaign finance reform in order to save it’
Then he set up a web site that raised a quarter BILLION dollars in undocumented funds, deliberately setting it up to not check names or addresses. Basic safety features. Allowing anyone to donate as much as they want in violation of the law. When asked to provide a list of donors, they refused.
Was it a calculated deception or incompetence? Does it matter?
OBQuiet on October 29, 2008 at 9:34 AM
The ad is going to run on 4 channels, not two. NBC, CBS, Fox (the big one) and Univision.
Sue on October 29, 2008 at 9:34 AM
I don’t have any problem with anyone spending however much of their own money on any crackpot scheme they like–as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone–but BO doesn’t spend his own money, he spends YOURS.
Well, probably not anyone here, but he does spend other people’s money on these mad schemes.

JiangxiDad on October 29, 2008 at 9:42 AM
I think the “yet” is brilliant. It targets those who are leaning or decided for Obama, and simply asks them to reconsider his qualifications at this particular time, both in his life and in our nation’s history. It also negates any claim of racism; “yet” indicates there are things about him that could change in the future and make him a candidate worthy of consideration (things like time, experience, full disclosure, etc.)
Electing our first African American president will be an exciting and historical event; just not YET. Not this man, not this time.
Least of These on October 29, 2008 at 9:43 AM

Hey! Just sit down, shut up, and keep you eyes on your damn telescreen! Then we can all finally rest in peace in our Obmamatopia.
Seriously though, I don’t get the “yet” at the end of the McCain ad either. I can’t imagine one good reason why anyone would think it necessary to add that. Maybe trying to soften the blow so as not to insult people who’ve been leaning toward Obama up till now? I really don’t know.
forest on October 29, 2008 at 9:45 AM
The “yet” is subtle, and needs to be there. It’s a mark of McCain’s Christian values — that someone can grow up, change, see the light, and finally “be ready”.
The point to be made is not that Obama can never be ready — such a point has McCain predicting the future and is a kind of hubris that may not fly right with certain fence-sitting voters. Rather the point to be made is that, at this time, McCain is the better choice.
Notice that “change” above is written with a small “c”. The words “change” and “hope” are too nice to be expunged from vocabulary just because of their dim-witted use by the opposition.
unclesmrgol on October 29, 2008 at 9:46 AM
I bet McCain comes out with strong ads AFTER the Big O’s infomercial.
Otherwise, Obama could amend the infomercial to counter-attack any strong ad that McCain puts out.

It’s a good ad until you get to the last word… “yet”.
Sort of cancels out the entire message. Thumbs down.
CliffHanger on October 29, 2008 at 9:53 AM
Foreign donations are illegal. He just isn’t required by law to report donations under $200. It’s one of the many problems with CFR. Obama has figured out how to circumnavigate the system to bring in unlimited donations from any source, anywhere on the planet.
Clever, but illegal.

Yup, I’d say that about covers it.
Wait…can I add “misogynist” to the list?
Please revise and repost.

In praise of “yet”
This might turn out to be very smart – because it gives voters with heart/brain conflicts a way out: vote with the brain now, and tell the heart that Obama just needs more seasoning and will get in next time.

If the McCain camp suspected from the get go that Obama would be getting foreign cash then they should have spoken up then. Now McCain just looks like a spiteful sourpuss with a week to go desperately trying to raise every kernel of sh*t that he can in hopes it’ll save his a*s.
Dave Rywall on October 29, 2008 at 10:02 AM
$5 million for the Barackopolis is a good start.
McCain agreed to the bailout of a mess that was caused by Democrats – including Obama. As for grand promises, in addition to the hundreds of billions he is proposing for domestic spending, Bambi wants to transfer hundreds of billions more to “poorer” countries overseas.
On TWO networks. Re-read Ed’s comments.
Thanks to liberal social spending and the RINOs who went along with it.
For starters, Obama would let the Bush tax cuts lapse, which means an automatic tax increase in 2010. Secondly, you cannot give a tax cut to the 40% of people who pay no federal income taxes. What Obama would do, instead, is give them either credits or money – either way, it’s not a tax cut and someone will have to pay for it, so taxes will have to be increased. Problem is, no nation in history ever taxed its way out of a recession and into prosperity. None.
The Dave Rywall part is retarded. Your stupidity is truly beyond comprehension.

Hated the “yet” part. Geeze
spypeach on October 29, 2008 at 10:04 AM
I guess I’m going to go against the grain and say that the “Yet” is a good play.
There are not many negatives (it’s not going to move people away from McCain), and has some potential to have positives.
There are still a decent number of “undecideds”. My guage is that these include quite a few people that would want to vote for an Obama presidency, but are unsure of his experience. I think if McCain can reassure these people that this won’t be the LAST CHANCE (zOMG, must vote for Obama now or never!!!1!) for Obama, and that McCain would be a suitable, experienced candidate in the meantime, he might draw their vote.
We, here, all know that McCain is not a hardcore Republican-only person… but I think that’s obviously the way that the media and the Obama campaign (sorry for the redundancy) have portrayed McCain. This is one last attempt to play to the middle, and try and pick off a few uneasy Obama leaners.
It’s basically low risk, possible high reward.

Funny thing happened to me while reading this blog post here.
Without reading the byline I thought it sounded like Allah’s post.
But then when I got to the update and saw that he used an upper case “L” for Lord, I thought, Hmmmmmmmm….. what’s this, Allah moving from lower case to upper case for the use of lord?
:D
So two things here: 1) Ed must be almost completely HotAirified, 2) if only Ed used “quotes” when he absolutely has to incorporate the phrase “first class” in the same sentence as Obama…. as Allah did this morning, my life would be complete!!!
Ed, you should be happy, because the crap has only just started, as only Allah could tell you.

I’ll give you that Team McCain dropped the ball by not figuring out what Obama was up to a little sooner. But it sounds like you’re trying to excuse illegal behavior, yes? I thought you Canucks were supposed to be our moral superiors, or something.
BadgerHawk on October 29, 2008 at 10:07 AM
It is not crybabying to point out that the Obama campaign is engaging in some very shady fundraising practices, and evidence to that effect is mounting steadily every day. That fact that he refuses to disclose the names of donors who give less than $200 already makes his motives suspect.
ManlyRash on October 29, 2008 at 10:07 AM
I’m glad to see the campaign taking this point of attack.
The whole ‘pushing back of the World Series’ for overindulgent Obama propaganda is just eerie and smacks of the premature victory lap around the world that started one decline.
He’s already in another poll decline – and he’s basically giving a paid for repeat performance.
I’d really like to see a more comprehensive ad effort by the McCain campaign.
A 60 second spot with every second used to highlight the connections of Wright/Rezko/Ayers/Khalidi/New Party-DSA/ACORN and the AVS issue. Highlight the media refusal to ask these questions and ask for the release of Obama’s college transcripts (emphasis on Columbia?).
Enough of pussy-footing around with formalities of debating policy minutia. MSM’ize the New Party ties, the Rashid Khalidi tape suppression and the rest of the questions Obama needs to answer more definitively than ‘he’s a guy….I kind of know….but he’s not an advisor’.
Joe the Plumber gave them a big opening on socialism – and conveniently on socialist Bill Ayers once again.
I’d also contrast the Dem theme that America somehow needs to apologize to the world – while John McCain asks us to fight with him for beautiful, bountiful America.
We don’t apologize, we lead.

McCain’s win will be illegitimate, won’t it Dave?
JiangxiDad on October 29, 2008 at 10:08 AM
Dave’s not actually a very good Canadian either. Maybe he should try Cuban. I think he’d make a great Cuban. You like swimming dave?

Wouldn’t that make a great YouTube ad for the final week!

Dude. The headlines are already written:
“Largest Pre-Election 30-Minute Desperation Network Buy in History”
Five people could watch and the MSM will be pumping this tingle-fest for the marxist.
Let’s roll.

That, my friend, would be the Goldwater “daisy ad” of this election.
Let’s roll.
