Video: Tears for Fears, the literalist remix

The bad news? The A-ha remix seems to have created a monster. The good news? This one’s funnier, I think.

Via Big Red, who’s written perhaps the definitive conservative feminist tribute to Sarah Palin.

I have to admit… I was a tears for fears fan in the seventh grade. I also listened to Terence Trent Darby. I’m going to go take a shower now.

Not sure what was funnier – ‘Dave Coulier’ or ‘magic chair.’

The guy does an amazing job imitating the singers.

Slublog on October 28, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Sad,sad,sad,…

I still think this one is better.(as far as entertainment goes):

the other one is better because a-ha is not singing on screen at any point; so you aren’t trying to remember the real lyrics. you lose yourself in it better.

But the lyrics they did here are a little better.

lorien1973 on October 28, 2008 at 6:43 PM

Oh, the mullet part brought tears to my eyes, I was laughing so hard. I like the other song better, but this was good too. Anything to keep me distracted from the election for the next week.

Keep ‘em coming, please!

I am a fan of this group. I actually saw this video a few days ago in our allies, the PUMAs’ site, Hillbuzz.

Rarely do I literally LOL. The “Dave Coulier” line was the exception.

Hey Allah, Ace is having some fun talking about GOTV this weekend and all the bloggers. Here is a taste:

There are a lot of bloggers people would sign up for. Jeff Goldstein in Colorado, for example, and all of his readers heading out to get out the vote, then having drinks afterwards. Captain Ed in Minnesota. The Red Staters in Virginia. Iowahawk, wherever he lives.

Allah on his couch, yelling at empty bottles of Jack Daniels that they just don’t get it.

broker1 on October 28, 2008 at 7:05 PM

As one who has spent her professional life working in them, I lament that there aren’t more odes to libraries.

As a Tears for Fears fan — saw them twice in the 80s — until they jumped the shark with the self-important Sowing the Seeds of Love, I infinitely prefer Pale Shelter, especially at the end of the video when one of the paper airplanes nails Roland in the eye.

I tell ya tho, you’d be impressed with my ‘80 music collection, and not just talking about my iPod. I’ve invested quite a lot in vinyl (the best quality music there is IMHO) and have an extensive collection of ’80s music, from Rock to early hip-hop to alternative.

wccawa on October 28, 2008 at 8:35 PM

That was pretty cool. I remember slow dancing to that song as a freshman in high school (yes, there was a female involved). I vividly remember DJing the school dances and everyone going nuts over the true Tears For Fears anthem “Shout”.

I also remember excitedly sitting in my living room with my dual-cassette stereo and doing a 30 minute extended remix of “Rock Me Amadeus”. I also remember fleeing the dance later that week for fear of getting my ass kicked. My buddy and I did it as a joke. No one laughed.

Best “album” of the 80’s…Simple Minds’ “Once Upon A Time”. One of my all-time cross-decade favorites.

Tears for Fears are great. This was very good!

carbon_footprint on October 28, 2008 at 9:19 PM

…the remix is very, very well done, if a bit odd….

…but the video remixed reminds me of just how silly we all looked in the ’80’s…the hair…the clothes…the rabbis…the simians…silly, silly, silly…and you didn’t even have to put any effort into videos back then…or into music, for that matter….

…myself, I looked much as I do now…no parachute pants…no mullet…no Dave Coulier blonde pout…much the same as today…only half as wide, though….

…that’s the good thing about being a redneck: the lack of style is timeless….

…I got off that train a looooooooong time ago…which, considering the current commercial musical offerings, is a good thing….

…anyone wanna kick to Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers? “Don’t let ‘em dance on your new carpet/You make ‘em roll it up!”

Didnt realize there were some people here that are/were into the “alternative” music scene. Year of my birth was 1961. Yes, 80’s best decade for music!! Loved all the bands you guys have mentioned – also New Order, Ultravox, Kraftwerk, Bauhaus, Talk Talk, Human League, Flock of Seagulls …. In the 90’s though, I got more into the more industrial/techno scene – Front 242, Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy, etc and also some of the bands on the 4AD label like Dead Can Dance.

Talk Talk

gxpgxp on October 28, 2008 at 10:13 PM

My DH and I are very happily married 8 years now this month. He grew up during the 1980s in the tough streets of East Los Angeles where he was inundated with rap, hip-hop and traditional Mexican music. Through his older siblings, he was exposed to alternative and heavy metal.

When we were dating, I introduced him to artists and genres he had never heard. One evening I took him to a used record shop. It’s My Life by Talk Talk is one of my absolute favorite dance tracks and I was excited to find the CD there to replace my damaged copy. He gallantly bought it for me as I raved about the title song.

Back in the car, I popped it into the CD player, closed my eyes, and settled back blissfully anticipating aural pleasure. After the distinctive opening lines, I glanced over to share the experience with him and he was staring at me as if I had falsified my IQ test.

Music of the 80s has special meaning to those of us who lived through it. I will always associate Hold Me Now by the Thompson Twins and Let Me Go by Heaven 17 with the day I left my first husband. Taken out of memory’s context, it can sound dated and overly synthesized.

I am delighted to find so many fans of great music hear.

Yes, great stuff! My girlfriend at that time introduced me to alot of new stuff (and she worked at a record store – yes, actual vinyl! LOL) I guess it is natural for people to love the music of their youth. Did your husband eventually come to like your music?

I saw Talk Talk in ‘85 warming up for the Psych Furs at “The Pier” in NYC – great time. I’m not into that remake of “It’s my Life” (Gwen Stefani?). It’s kind of weak.

90s, early 00s was dark and depressing. Videos too. One of the few recent bands that I find worth listening to is Evanescence.

The Tears For Fears and Rick Astley one work better, I think, because the videos are so surreal, and have nothing to do with the actual song. In that vein, I’d love to see him do Safety Dance, or Hungry Like The Wolf.

Anyone else surprised how much Roland Orzabal looks like Ducky? I don’t remember that at all.
