Video: CBS follows Obama’s money

posted at 10:30 am on October 28, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Katie Couric fronts this CBS News look at Barack Obama’s fundraising activities in the general election, and points out a few uncomfortable truths. First CBS reports on the issues surrounding the small donors and the lack of accountability, and then they move onto some revealing special interests:

CBS missed the story on credit-card fraud at Team Obama, and they had an opening for this in the otherwise good reporting on the differences in transparency between Obama and McCain on small donors. However, they did a good job in reporting the fact that Obama likes to rail about Wall Street greed but uses bundlers right out of Goldman Sachs. The disparity in fundraising between McCain and Obama with these well-connected Wall Street firms is eye-opening.

It’s not bad, and the CBS report puts a dent in the mythology of Obama’s transparency.

the big donors play to win…why donate to a side that can’t do you any favors? big donors always lean towards whoever’s lookin to be in the majority. and dems are gonna win, period…so there you go

The GOP candidate losing the fundraising raise to a socialist Dem is bad news. Wall Street is mostly betting on who they think the winner will be and where their bread will be buttered–though bread may be short supply.

Hopefully, PA and OH come through.

So, what ‘s up with these media outlets? Are they now afraid of having a supreme Dear Leader? Or are they now pandering after the support of those of us who pay the bills, in a desperate attempt to improve their ratings and save their jobs?

For Crapsake Ed, CBS and the rest of the MSM cannot be reformed.

Shrink the cancer or cut it out.

Angry Dumbo on October 28, 2008 at 10:07 AM

1) Obama promises to accept federal campaign funds–with its limitations–if Senator McCain agrees to as well.
2) McCain agrees and signs up.
3) Obama breaks his promise, refuses federal funds.
4) Obama promises to disclose every donation, even though he’s only required to do so for donations of more than $200.
5) Obama breaks his full-disclosure promise, only revealing those gifts that are legally required.
6) Obama has since raised almost ten times more than McCain’s $85 million. More than $200 million of that is from unknown sources.
Since donations of $200 or less are hidden, Obama’s richest friends could have each sent thousands of contributions of $200, which would be illegal (there is a limit of $2000 per person). I don’t doubt that much of the money came from foreign sources, which would also be illegal.

jgapinoy on October 28, 2008 at 10:08 AM

CBS reports this stuff now, rather than a month ago, because they know it’s too late to do any real damage to Obama but it allows CBS to pretend to be an honest, unbiased news organization.

The MSM has to know that if Dear Leader get elected then the thuggery will be turned on them when they start reporting on his presidency and any shady dealings.

Are we having a little pre-purchase buyer’s remorse?

sheesh on October 28, 2008 at 10:09 AM

If McCain had this money advantage, the unfairness of it would be a daily story on all networks.

jgapinoy on October 28, 2008 at 10:10 AM

I like (no I don’t) how they end it with Obama saying, “The real question is, ‘will our country be better off 4 years from now?’” What was the point of that? I mean I know; and having a different voice from the main speaker makes it back ground and all subliminallish.

MirCat on October 28, 2008 at 10:11 AM

The best part is the ad they show at the end is where the “$250K and under” gets a tax break magically changes to “$200K and under”….

At least Clinton waited until AFTER he was elected to start braking promises… this guy started before he even had the nomination sewed up.

There is a fork in the road and we are about to take it.

They’ve tried inciting racial hatred and class warfare, now they are just going to do it the old fashion way….buy it. Those that caused the collapse will now be rewarded and allowed to do it again. When you are as criminal as this group of democrats, there are no ethics and there never has been any rules. The end goal is to bring America to it’s financial knees and make the masses subservient to their liberal masters. We’re screwed.

I notice that they didn’t really question who was giving those buckets of undisclosed cash.
How much of it is from foreign govt.’s?
China already figured out how easy it is to change foreign policy and by giving money to a President and I wonder who else is taking that lesson to heart.
It might be worth ten or twenty million dollars to get an American President who is sympathetic to Hezbollah or who would look the other way at Iranian aggression.
There is a reason that Obama’s campaign doesn’t want people to know where all that money is coming from.
It ain’t good.

This would have been great a month ago. What good does it do now. Mark my words, the press will issue a number of critical stories against Obama leading into the election because they know it will not matter. In this election, 30-35% of people will have already voted before next Tuesday. It will, however, allow the press to fight off the charges of bias. It is classic CYA.

Too little, too late Katie. Although, to get her back in line again, Obama’s goons will probably egg her house.

I never thought that I would see the day that CBS and especially Katie Couric would be emulating the gutter tactics of the Republican party by advancing these lies and smears. (Do I have to insert sarc?)

Jeff on October 28, 2008 at 10:19 AM

The MSM cannot save themselves now. They will be restricted if Dear Leader gets elected. They have lost the good faith of most Americans and will not get it back anytime soon.

What amazes me are the “sunshine” laws in local government. Here in southwest Florida (and many, many other states), two officials are not permitted to meet and discuss public business outside of a monitored, recorded proceeding. Yet it seems that is the only way federal business is actually conducted.

I agree. This is nothing more than Johnny-come-lately horsesh*t cover that they can point to and say, “Geez, we covered the story. We can’t help it if the voters chose to ignore our crack reporting.”

I hope these talking heads in the NYC-DC corridor remember who they backed when planes start flying into buildings again and the market drop by another 50% on the news that Obama and Congress are passing legislation to terminate private retirement plans in favor of a pitiful government pension.

This is a flimsy, effortless piece by CBS. This information has been available to everyone for months and they put out 2 1/2 minutes on Obama’s highly suspicious donations a week before the election? Gimme a break. They spent more time rummaging through dumpsters in Alaska.

But, my $15.00 Contribution to The One, The Messiah, the Marxist-Muslim, Barack HUSSEIN Obama (PBUH)(SAW)(SWT); officially CLEARED my Bank this morning, and now belongs to history!

That was $15.00 “donation” I made with my Debit/Bank Card last week, in the name of “Heywood JaBlowmee” using a completely false address, zip, employer, email address, etc.

The only correct and accurate information I put when I submitted the donation, was the card number itself.

Which I have subsequently cancelled….

Well, the honneymoon is over because of a couple of tough interviews, followed by those companies not getting any more interviews. The MSM sees this as disloyal, and an insult, and now they will FINALLY start doing the job they should have been doing all along.

May be too late, but its all about Barry and Biden pissing them off.

ernesto on October 28, 2008 at 10:03 AM

It’s more accurate this way.

All you have to do is examine the last 10 years to see which side has done the most favors for the big players on Wall Street, and it hasn’t been the Republicans.

The big players reward those who funnel public money their way the most.

Wishful thinking.

The two WaPo reporters who single-handedly brought down the Nixon Administration (for covering up dirty tricks) won’t lift a finger to look into this financial cover-up of gallactic proportions.

Undecideds are people who have a problem taking a stand on anything. These are the people who won’t take a side for fear of having someone angry at them. So their opinion is of no value as far as I’m concerned. Unfortunately I recognize the fact that they can screw up everything this country stands for based on their character flaw. Lovely.
BTW-Will CBS now be thrown under the bus & have no access to Obama & his camp? Not that their hatchet piece was worth much. But who is watching them anyway?

Badger40 on October 28, 2008 at 11:32 AM

It’s something at least. I’m half tempted to ask, “Who are you and what have you done with CBS?”

Still, as was pointed out they completely left out the credit card fraud story which has been well known on the blog-o-sphere for some time.
