Video: Biden talking about taxing incomes over $150K, not $250K, now?

The McCain camp’s pushing this out as evidence that Joe the Plumber’s fears are already being realized:

Because you’re successful, you have to pay more than everybody else? We all live in this country. It’s a basic right. And Obama wants to take that basic right and penalize me for it, is what it comes down to. That’s a very socialist view and it’s incredibly wrong. I mean, $250,000 now. What if he decides, well, you know, $150,000, you’re pretty rich, too. Let’s go ahead and lower it again. You know it’s a slippery slope. When’s it going to stop?

Watch the clip, then read on.

Has The One already slid down the slope? Seems like it, says Byron York, flagging the campaign’s new ad for yet a third figure: $200,000 a year, which Obama now claims is the threshold for tax cuts for families under his plan. On the stump today, McCain chipped in with this:

Senator Obama has made a lot of promises. First he said people making less than 250,000 dollars would benefit from his plan, then this weekend he announced in an ad that if you’re a family making less than 200,000 dollars you’ll benefit — but yesterday, right here in Pennsylvania, Senator Biden said tax relief should only go to “middle class people — people making under 150,000 dollars a year.” It’s interesting how their definition of rich has a way of creeping down. At this rate, it won’t be long before Senator Obama is right back to his vote that Americans making just 42,000 dollars a year should get a tax increase. We can’t let that happen.

What’s the deal? From what I can tell, this is a case of Team Barry being characteristically slippery in getting out their message. The One likes to emphasize how only people making more than $250K will have their taxes raised, but that doesn’t mean that everyone making less than that will have their taxes cut. There’s a middle segment, between $150K and $200K for individuals and $200K and $250K for families (as I understand it and as NBC understands it), whose taxes will stay the same, which means Biden is technically correct in the clip. Obama actually mentioned the $150,000 figure back in June in an interview with Fox News, but he prefers to throw around the number $250,000 doubtless because casual observers will assume that’s the threshold for tax cuts. It isn’t. It’s the threshold for tax hikes, and only for families, not individuals. Or so I deduce.

Have The One and his surrogates in fact lied about the tax hike/tax cut distinction in his plan? Saith the RNC’s oppo research team, you betcha:

In July 2008, Barack Obama Said: “If You Make $250,000 A Year Or Less, We Will Not Raise Your Taxes. We Will Cut Your Taxes.” (Barack Obama, Remarks, Powder Springs, GA, 7/8/08)

In August 2008, Obama Economic Policy Adviser Jason Furman Said That Barack Obama “Would Cut Taxes For Almost All Of The Families Making Less Than [$250,000].” FURMAN: “Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the op-ed today makes a very important point that, while Barack Obama would not raise taxes for any family making below $250,000 — in fact, it would cut taxes for almost all of the families making less than that — Senator McCain cannot make a similar promise for his tax plan because, for the first time in history, he would make families pay taxes on the health insurance that they get from their employers.” (Obama For American, Press Conference Call, 8/14/08)

In October 2008, Governor Ted Strickland (D-OH) Delivered The Democrat Radio Response Saying That Those Making Less Than $250,000 Would See Lower Taxes. “He’ll restore the middle class by cutting taxes for small businesses, and for 95 percent of workers and their families, including 5.7 million in Ohio. If you make less than $250,000, you won’t see your taxes go up one single dime. In fact, your tax rates will be lower than they were under Ronald Reagan.” (Governor Ted Strickland, Democratic Radio Response, 10/4/08)

One fact not in dispute: If you make more than $250,000 a year, your capital gains rate is going up, a prospect that’s already having real-world consequences. Here’s Cavuto taking it to Kelly nemesis Bill Burton on the subject yesterday. Just what the doctor ordered with the stock market already off 40 percent since last year: A disincentive for large investors to jump in.

Update: Ambinder has the same numbers I do.

From the Obama website:

Provide a Tax Cut for Working Families: Obama and Biden will restore fairness to the tax code and provide 150 million workers the tax relief they need. Obama and Biden will create a new “Making Work Pay” tax credit of up to $500 per person, or $1,000 per working family. The “Making Work Pay” tax credit will completely eliminate income taxes for 10 million Americans.

At $500/person, Obama plans to save the middle class with a tax cut that amounts to less than $10/week. I wonder how much traction Obama would get if his plan were characterized as giving 95% of all workers $10 each week. That’s change that isn’t even worth caring about.

Don’t forget the SCHIP expansion. We smokers making less than $250k will be hit with a 250% increase in federal taxes on cigarettes. Luckily, Obama will give us some of our income back so that we can redistribute it to families with multiple luxury SUV’s and both commercial and residential properties.

“Just words” “Just speeches”

Thus according to the reason here, $250K or $150K, it’s correct because of the gap, no new taxes. Come on, he is misleading the American people and all we can do is say -”technically correct”.

Hey, what about when the One lets the Bush Tax cuts expire and we all pay a few thousand more, starting in 2011 (or earlier if they are repealed). Is this “technically” not a tax increase, only a “lapse” of a tax cut. For a married couple with $75K taxable income, the taxes will go up by $3,862. Check your tax increase at:

Its going to suck having my taxes raised. very depressing.

Rich Lowrey nailed it in his column today:

“If McCain weren’t running for president, and it were some other Republican who had attacked Obama for his associations and picked Sarah Palin as his running mate, surely McCain himself would be on some Sunday show clucking his disapproval.”

He didnt like the swift boating, which was basically telling the truth, he is running a horrible campaign and Biden and Obama are already getting sloppy showing their true colors…they are going to raise our taxes and do irreparable damage to the country. Read Pat Buchanan’s column about Obama’s first 100 days. We have some rough days ahead of us. And when they legitimize the illegal aliens, they will build in a natural majority just like California. McCain blew it on so many levels. they should have listened to Buchanan. Opening the borders simply assured more democrats and a natural democratic majority.

I dont see how pull out of this…

Good Luck… but here is another suggestion before I go back OT.

Go to all the neighbors and have them sign a petition of the issues with this guy, the dogs and anything else you can check. 1. feces not cleaned up to laws and specs of city. 2. unusual vehicle activity. 3. how many times does it get out of it’s cage and yard. 4. personal damage to anyone(s) house, property or person concerning these dogs. 5. and most important, keep notes on everyone you talk to when you call in a complaint, times date and who they are. It makes it easier in the long run.

Dark Chocolate also works.

Give it a month and BO will be down to anyone making over minimum wage…….unless you are a minority, a woman or an illegal.

Don’t forget if you are a capitalist – according to his buddy Bill Ayers – they should all be exterminated. I think his figure was about 25 million back in the 70’s – it’s no doubt a lot more by now.

So he’ll first take our money, dole it out to the more deserving, and get rid of those pesky capitalists that are greedy and make the country too, oh, what’s the word, American.

I still wish McCain would mock Obama with “How do you give 30% of the people who don’t pay taxes, a tax cut? How do you pay back someone, who hasn’t paid in?”
I know he would ruffle some feathers, but he could explain that Obama should just be honest and say he wants to give people who don’t pay taxes, a welfare check…just challenge Obama to be honest, and call it what it is.
It is mathematically impossible to give something back to someone who hasn’t given you anything to give back.
*
I feel everyone should pay taxes, even if they get a “welfare check” from the Government, then they should take a portion of that and pay it back.
Yeah, I know it sounds crazy, but everyone should realize where that money comes from and give some back. It reinforces that others are giving even more.
Even if it is only $10, everyone should pay the government something. Never should there be a class of people who don’t pay taxes, never.

It does get tough when mommies like myself have two kids and work on one income and stand in line watching people buying so much stuff on stamps…and I have to budget and eat more beans and rice than my intestines will allow (haha) because we are trying to be frugal. It kind of makes me sad…I couldn’t make cookies for my sweet little boy who was looking through my cook book cause I can’t get butter until Friday. haha. We are just a normal budgeting family…following Dave Ramsey’s plan…but it hurts to see people get away with it and still afford expensive jewelry and shoes, etc.

I realize that there are poor that need help in emergencies. But, how about freeing up our money to help real hurting people than those who actively work to NOT get employed in order to get MORE welfare?

Even that isn’t accurate. The BUSH tax cuts expire by 2010 and the Dems refuse to renew them which means that everybodies taxes are going to go up as a result of Democrats and far too many Republicans (including McCain) have been in DC so long they think of your income as that part of THEIR money they graciously have allowed you to keep. People who refuse to pay more taxes are simply ungrateful anti-American dogs who need to be brought to justice by big government.

Yesterday on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read “Vote Obama, I need the money”. I laughed. Once in the restaurant my server had on an “Obama 08″ Button, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference — just imagine the coincidence. When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need–I pointed out the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight. I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I’ve decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was very grateful. At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient “lacked” the money more. I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.”

There was a little girl two years ago killed by a pit bull. My sister had one. Taz seemed like a loving dog. One day, the dog turned on my sister. She had to have some stitches in her hand. But still kept the dog. Then one night she had a party. And Taz mauled this man. I called the cops. I was young and didn’t think. They had the dog taken to the pound. Taz had to be put down. I don’t regret it.

sheebe on October 28, 2008 at 2:21 PM

Bill Burton is one of the most ignorant stooges I’ve ever seen on a campaign. Seriously, what an idiot.

CP on October 28, 2008 at 2:21 PM

Good lord, forgot this was about Biden. Talk about flip flopping on what they both say.

sheebe on October 28, 2008 at 2:22 PM

It is amazing to me Obama thinks Burton can represent him intelligently, which goes to prove Obama’s judgment is seriously flawed.
What a tool. Never answered the ?.
I thought Cavuto was very fair.
Burton quipped that Cavoto didn’t ‘believe’ in their math.
So it is quasi-religious-if you don’t beeeeelieeeve, then we can’t help you.
Scary.

Badger40 on October 28, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Bill Burton is a tool and obviously way over his head talking economics. He couldn’t have a conversation with Cavuto. He could only regurgitate talking points because he couldn’t keep up with Cavuto. A Burton WH press conference should be entertaining, should the worst happen next week.

Mallard T. Drake on October 28, 2008 at 2:31 PM

These are not the tax proposal numbers that I have known.

Sefton on October 28, 2008 at 2:33 PM

Please pass me the Bill Burton bucket!
Neil shouldn’t lower himself to have this idiot on his show.
Just talk over the host Bill, that will increase your credibility and make everyone believe that the stock market isn’t crashing because they know the pit will be deeper with The One….NOT!!!
Here’s the deal Bill: ship yourself overseas.
It isn’t ok Neil…get a spine.

Care to bid a negative?

Grue in the Attic on October 28, 2008

Grue, didn’t we have a retroactive tax increase under Billy Jeff? Isn’t that kinda, sorta, sumpin like a negative?

SKYFOX on October 28, 2008 at 3:15 PM

I own my own business. My SS# is my tax ID for the business. I make ten percent profit after expenses. If I do 400K, I am a fat cat to the Obamatons. It nets me about 40K, and I live in a blue state so my taxes and living expenses ain’t cheap. I can’t afford to hire anyone to help me and generally bust my butt (one man operation). Obama’s socialist plan extinguishes incentives.

I’m not a plumber, but it’s the same small busimess scenario. I want to do better, grow and make more money, but that would simply mean paying even more taxes under Obama. It means that the little fun things that my family was doing will end (like a vacation together). It will also hurt my business since it means I will even net less than 10%.

Hening on October 28, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Burton is the poster-child for “I’m way over my head ass-hatery” I can’t understand why they keep having this fool on Fox. He pukes Obama rhetoric like an empty headed moron, talks over the hosts, never answers a question directly and makes a complete ass of himself. Obama should realize that propping up this imbecile as his talking head only turns people off and may potentially lose him some votes. On second thought, I hope Obama is that stupid.

Claypigeon on October 28, 2008 at 3:25 PM

That would fit the bill.

Grue in the Attic on October 28, 2008 at 3:26 PM

Why the hell hasn’t McCain been emphasizing Obama’s plan to let the Bush tax cuts expire. The fact that this will be a big tax increase for everybody, which Obama claims isn’t really an increase, but just the end of a tax cut, puts the lie to everything Obama has been saying about only raising taxes for the rich. The stupidity with which the McCain campaign has run will end up making Bob Dole’s efforts look like “The Old Gipper’s” finest.

djaces on October 28, 2008 at 3:27 PM

…clearly a slip of the tongue, not a policy statement…but that’s only because they’ve probably been tossing around lots of imaginary figures to stand in for the “threshold” in their “spread the wealth” plan…and none of ‘em are any more substantial than fairy dust….

…it’s coming clear that these asshats believe that telling people that they’ll bring “change” (whatever that is) and mouthing populist drivel about “from the bottom up” will get them successfully to the other side of 4 November…what happens 5 November and beyond is immaterial, as it was for the Clintons…and may be less so….

…in the end, it’ll be a reinvigoration of subsidized living for key (supportive) demographics, an expansion of government regulation of everything, another attempt to nationalize the medical industry (the better to regulate our conduct), and lots of pollyanna-esque bilge about how much Uncle Obama loves you….

…socialism failed in the Soviet Union…socialism is killing Europe…and look how well Cuba and Vietnam are doing after 50 and 30 years of socialism, more or less, respectively. Only Haiti beats ‘em as vacation spots….

…yep…from each according to his needs…if he’s black and unemployed…or a union teacher…or a college prof…if you’re unreliably productive, the wrong color, or religious, better watch out….

When Biden talks you never know if his words are accurate or if it is just more dumb ass garbage rolling out of his mouth.

rplat on October 28, 2008 at 3:59 PM

Biden is a chronic liar. Why are they avoiding calling him on anything? Right after his liarpolooza VP debate, they should have saturated the air with an ad refuting each, and every one of his lies and misstatements.

I was attacked by a pit bull. I am a racist when it comes to those dogs. They should be put down… – upinak on October 28, 2008 at 1:40 PM

The breed was developed for one purpose only and that purpose is not longer legal. It should therefore be exterminated. End of story.

On a positive note, Manly Rush and his bullying ways, will be not posting here any more after next week….small consolation though. – Roger Waters on October 28, 2008 at 1:43 PM

Bully? Moi? Little old lovable me? Me, who is adored and revered in these parts? Me a bully? Sounds like a little bit o’ projection there, Rog.

I look forward to rubbing your nose in what’s left of Obama on the evening of November 4.

By the way, Cartman told me to tell you that Pink Floyd sucks balls.

ManlyRash on October 28, 2008 at 4:25 PM

1) BO has always voted for tax increases
2) BO has always voted against tax cuts
3) BO has flip-flopped on dozens of issues
(you can’t trust him to keep his word)
4) BO now promises a middle-class tax cut
What do we make of these facts?
BO will raise everyone’s taxes.

jgapinoy on October 28, 2008 at 4:28 PM

Troops,
-
Isn’t $150K just above the pay grade for congressmen?
-
They have always defined the rich as anyone who makes more than they do, with a cushion added for their next pay increase.
-
On Nov 5th or sometime soon thereafter Barry will tell us that the rich are those making over $35K.

its been a nightmarish failure around the globe!!

But hey,Hopey thinks America is ready,

even after 40 years of Liberal experiments!!!

We are going to look back and wonder, with all of the crap on Obama that is out there, how the hell did we lose this election? And we will learn that Florida screwed us in the early primaries and Huckabee and the far right screwed us in the later primaries.

IF we don’t win this I’m going to beholding a long and bitter grudge against the far right.

Charles Martel on October 28, 2008 at 7:45 PM

Senator Joe Biden is just telling the truth.

Check it out for yourself.

http://taxcut.barackobama.com/

Let’s say you’re a single parent with two children, make $152,000.00 a year, have child care expenses, owe $125,000.00 on your modest home and your saving some for your retirement.

So that’s not rich, right?

Wrong. Senator Obama would like for you to know that you would not receive a tax cut.

cryptojunkie on October 28, 2008 at 9:01 PM

They can say anything they want.
He could moon the nation at the World Trade Center memorial and pick his nose with a copy of the constitution and the next day say ” I didn’t do that! I was taken out of context.” and the MSM would just go, “No story here, lets move along.”

JellyToast on October 28, 2008 at 10:07 PM

I was attacked by a pit bull. I am a racist when it comes to those dogs. They should be put down…

And if anyone defends them… then maybe you should see the scars on my hand.. and the fact I never saw this dog running full speed at me 25 yards away and I never did anything to it.

upinak on October 28, 2008 at 1:40 PM

If you were attacked by a pit bull, blame the owner. Pit bulls are not dangerous dogs by themselves. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who want a vicious dog, and will get a pit bull and train it to be vicious. But they have to be trained that way; they are not naturally vicious.

We have a pit bull that was a stray. I had real doubts about taking the dog in at first, knowing their reputation. But it was the best move we ever made. My 15-year old daughter loves her, and has already announced she will somehow take her to college with her.

It’s funny, we have people all the time asking if she bites or if she’s dangerous. Meanwhile, our miniature Daschund is 14 pounds of fury barking at them. They’re worrying about the wrong dog!
