Video: Biden talking about taxing incomes over $150K, not $250K, now?

posted at 1:06 pm on October 28, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

The McCain camp’s pushing this out as evidence that Joe the Plumber’s fears are already being realized:

Because you’re successful, you have to pay more than everybody else? We all live in this country. It’s a basic right. And Obama wants to take that basic right and penalize me for it, is what it comes down to. That’s a very socialist view and it’s incredibly wrong. I mean, $250,000 now. What if he decides, well, you know, $150,000, you’re pretty rich, too. Let’s go ahead and lower it again. You know it’s a slippery slope. When’s it going to stop?

Watch the clip, then read on.

Has The One already slid down the slope? Seems like it, says Byron York, flagging the campaign’s new ad for yet a third figure: $200,000 a year, which Obama now claims is the threshold for tax cuts for families under his plan. On the stump today, McCain chipped in with this:

Senator Obama has made a lot of promises. First he said people making less than 250,000 dollars would benefit from his plan, then this weekend he announced in an ad that if you’re a family making less than 200,000 dollars you’ll benefit — but yesterday, right here in Pennsylvania, Senator Biden said tax relief should only go to “middle class people — people making under 150,000 dollars a year.” It’s interesting how their definition of rich has a way of creeping down. At this rate, it won’t be long before Senator Obama is right back to his vote that Americans making just 42,000 dollars a year should get a tax increase. We can’t let that happen.

What’s the deal? From what I can tell, this is a case of Team Barry being characteristically slippery in getting out their message. The One likes to emphasize how only people making more than $250K will have their taxes raised, but that doesn’t mean that everyone making less than that will have their taxes cut. There’s a middle segment, between $150K and $200K for individuals and $200K and $250K for families (as I understand it and as NBC understands it), whose taxes will stay the same, which means Biden is technically correct in the clip. Obama actually mentioned the $150,000 figure back in June in an interview with Fox News, but he prefers to throw around the number $250,000 doubtless because casual observers will assume that’s the threshold for tax cuts. It isn’t. It’s the threshold for tax hikes, and only for families, not individuals. Or so I deduce.

Have The One and his surrogates in fact lied about the tax hike/tax cut distinction in his plan? Saith the RNC’s oppo research team, you betcha:

In July 2008, Barack Obama Said: “If You Make $250,000 A Year Or Less, We Will Not Raise Your Taxes. We Will Cut Your Taxes.” (Barack Obama, Remarks, Powder Springs, GA, 7/8/08)

In August 2008, Obama Economic Policy Adviser Jason Furman Said That Barack Obama “Would Cut Taxes For Almost All Of The Families Making Less Than [$250,000].” FURMAN: “Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the op-ed today makes a very important point that, while Barack Obama would not raise taxes for any family making below $250,000 — in fact, it would cut taxes for almost all of the families making less than that — Senator McCain cannot make a similar promise for his tax plan because, for the first time in history, he would make families pay taxes on the health insurance that they get from their employers.” (Obama For American, Press Conference Call, 8/14/08)

In October 2008, Governor Ted Strickland (D-OH) Delivered The Democrat Radio Response Saying That Those Making Less Than $250,000 Would See Lower Taxes. “He’ll restore the middle class by cutting taxes for small businesses, and for 95 percent of workers and their families, including 5.7 million in Ohio. If you make less than $250,000, you won’t see your taxes go up one single dime. In fact, your tax rates will be lower than they were under Ronald Reagan.” (Governor Ted Strickland, Democratic Radio Response, 10/4/08)

One fact not in dispute: If you make more than $250,000 a year, your capital gains rate is going up, a prospect that’s already having real-world consequences. Here’s Cavuto taking it to Kelly nemesis Bill Burton on the subject yesterday. Just what the doctor ordered with the stock market already off 40 percent since last year: A disincentive for large investors to jump in.

Update: Ambinder has the same numbers I do.

I’ll never understand why liberals put faith in a small group of people– government– to define “rich” when and however they want for the purposes of confiscating money; they don’t see the slippery slope and red flags? That soooo many people buy into this fundamental folly is scary.

The same Tax Policy Center Obama’s relying on in his campaign literature here in PA says that the “95 percent” claim is hogwash in every single income quintile, even the lowest. In fact, the lowest income quintile has a higher percentage of filers facing a tax increase under Obama than some of the higher-earning quintiles!

We need to hammer them on this, and on the “if you like your health care coverage you can keep it” lie too.

DrSteve on October 28, 2008 at 1:14 PM

Down the road to no return, the money we make is not to help the Majority whom work hard for it, but to help the government.

My dad has no college degree. He worked as a tool and die machinist for 20 years at the same shop, 5am to 6pm, sometimes 9pm, became the foreman and just recently started his own business in my parent’s BASEMENT. He is making quite a bit of money working both jobs, has lived in the same house for my entire life and is the most humble Christian man you’ll ever meet and utterly libertarian/conservative. Thanks for taking his money he earned from GOOD BUSINESS AND INTEGRITY and giving it to those who envy him and already getting better groceries off welfare than I do as a stay at home mom. You’d think that most of Hollywood and nearly every ML Baseball player would vote McCain.
I just looked it up-the median salary for the cheapest team is “$ 395,000″- the Florida Marlins.
The highest is $ 3,175,000 for Chicago Cubs.
I know that Hollywood and sports celebrities are only a small fraction of the population, but they get noticed more.
Obama would raise taxes on every single M.L Ballplayer. How many of them will vote Obama?

If you want to be more effective, try referring to the massive change from increasing taxes on those making only a quarter of a million dollars a year to those making a fifth of a million. This small slice of a big number shows how clear the gap between what they call “rich” and the (presumably upper) middle class and small businesses is.

Why is it not a talking point that tax breaks for people who don’t pay taxes is more a distribution system, not a revenue system. That’s the punchline of the Joe the Plumber story.

It does get tough when mommies like myself have two kids and work on one income and stand in line watching people buying so much stuff on stamps…and I have to budget and eat more beans and rice than my intestines will allow (haha) because we are trying to be frugal. It kind of makes me sad…I couldn’t make cookies for my sweet little boy who was looking through my cook book cause I can’t get butter until Friday. haha. We are just a normal budgeting family…following Dave Ramsey’s plan…but it hurts to see people get away with it and still afford expensive jewelry and shoes, etc.

I realize that there are poor that need help in emergencies. But, how about freeing up our money to help real hurting people than those who actively work to NOT get employed in order to get MORE welfare?

But I remember when telling voters that you were going to raise their taxes was a guaranteed way to lose an election.

But today, in the midst of a historic economic downturn, the guy that’s broadcasting his desire to take more of your money and most of your freedom is expected to win.

I still do not believe that he is going to win. I think this will be viewed as the last gasp of 1960’s radical leftism.

But if he does win, it will mean that the America that we all grew up in is gone. Not because of will happen under our Dear Leader, but what has already happened in the minds of the people.

OH…Entelechy…it is not a dog. It is an UNDEAD MASS OF GROWLING PIT BULL FLESH that menaces my children DAILY.

Oh, no…Entelchy…this is no family pet.

The beauty of it is that I DESPISE his owner and I have warned him (about four days agao) that if the dog gets into my yard EVEN ONE MORE TIME I am going to double tap him with my Glock, just inside my property line.

The fact that his master is a drooling imbecile will only make the extermination of his “baby” all the sweeter.

Better?

oooh!oooh! over here! $50k!
:-)

Buckaroo on October 28, 2008 at 1:27 PM

We’ve $50,000, to the Buckaroo over there.

Now let’s go all the way down to $0. That’s right folks, we’re talking taxation on every dollar above $0.

Do I hear $0?

Everyone who says “Racist” around here after quoting someone is joking, pretty much a rule of thumb they’re mocking the MSM/Obama campaign. :)

If Obama wins the Bush tax cuts will not be
renewed, so all taxpayers would get a tax hike.

Mulligan on October 28, 2008 at 1:15 PM

You’re absolutely correct.

Not enough people realize that much-ballyhooed Bush tax cuts came with a time limit–they expire at the end of 2009. So Obama is going to sit with a stupid look on his face and say that Congress has tied his hands by not passing legislation for him to sign. In that case, you could conceivably see a wholesale turnover in the House in 2010.

In the meantime, however, I think the expiration of the tax cuts gives Obama an incredibly easy out. Unlike Clinton, who had to act affirmatively to get a tax increase enacted in 1993, Obama can accomplish the same thing by inaction.

Now, that’s change we can believe in.

OH, and people always seem to forget, and the MSM including Fox does not mention, that Barry’s plan is predicated on the Idea of the Bush Tax cuts expiring…

So, yes, your taxes WILL go up.

Conservatives think Liberals are stupid.

Liberals think Conservatives are evil.

Techie on October 28, 2008 at 1:31 PM

Pretty much sums it up. A lot of liberals do hate America, but that doesn’t really make them evil. They love America like guys who make their wives get plastic surgery love them.

I love you, I just want you to change some of the major things that make you you. Try that one out on your wife tonight and see how she responds.

Joe sort of had it right. It’s not a slippery slope. It’s more like a sliding scale from their perspective. Once incomes fall because of increased taxes on “rich” people, they will have to keep lowering the income amounts where taxes will be increased. They will have to make up review somewhere.

If there’s President-elect Obama next week, I look forward to quitting my full and part-time jobs. Why work?

seejanemom, this is definitely the way to go.

Entelechy on October 28, 2008 at 1:37 PM

I really can’t wait for people to realize (if b.o. gets elected) what a major screw up it was… via the tax hikes, the fact they can’t buy anything they want due to the higher taxes, the issue of what is concidered rich to poor, and the fact that gasoline will go thru the roof as well as heating oil and natural gas… not excluding electricity. As Congress and b.o. sit there and watch people start to riot due to the idiotic vote they put in.

Who do you think is going to come out on top?

That would be an interesting kind of revolt… work and save money and buy non-perishables through the rest of the year, then bring the economy to a screeching halt. :P

Democrats are telling us what they are going to do in January. Is anyone listening? By the 4th, I hope so.

Going down to 150 is funny.

I doubted Obama’s ad the other day that mentioned 200k, but this is beyond the pale.

Joe the Plumber is a prophet. But we all knew that the second he opened his mouth.
