Shep Smith grills Joe the Plumber: Why is a vote for Obama a vote for “the death of Israel”?

posted at 6:02 pm on October 28, 2008 by Allahpundit

What J the P should have said: “Ask Sarkozy” (who’s already issued a perfunctory denial of the Haaretz report, natch). Shep’s consumed here with the incongruity between Wurzelbacher’s accusation and The One’s consistently, and conspicuously, strong support of Israel on the stump, but one needn’t impute sinister motives to Obama — as JTP seems to do early on by mentioning his associations — to worry about the practical effect of his Middle East policy. The question today is the same as it was 18 months ago: Is Barry O prepared to enrage his base by sending the United States to war with these people if diplomatic efforts to stop the Iranian nuke program fail? Or will his “first-class temperament” lead him to back off and hope for the best? There are existential implications for Israel in the answer to those questions, even if you believe Obama has the best of intentions.

Exit question: Since Shep’s so keen to bring viewers the facts about St. Barack’s views on Israel, how’s about helping bloggers get to the bottom of this?

That was fast! I just asked for it in the last thread.

I saw that live on Fox. Shep was so patronizing, arrogant and self-righteous that he has to be an Obama supporter.

You can add the Middle-East to that. Israel will not go quietly this time.

I sent Shep 3 links about Khalidi, including the Gateway Pundit piece on O’Reilly inquiring about it. Joe did a great job answering Shep. Kudos to John Gibson for getting this out there, although it should have been done months ago. What is Obama hiding about his Columbia years? Why won;t he allow those records to be released?

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on October 28, 2008 at 6:10 PM

Keep bring us all the POSITIVE news Allah.

I’d like to see a poll done on all AllahPundits posts. Percentage negative for our side, percentage positive for our side, percentage ridiculing McCain’s and/or Palin’s words or deeds, and percentage defending Obama’s and/or Biden’s words or deeds. Then juxtapose that against DailyKos for kicks.

Exit Question: That would be one PESSIMISTIC poll, eh?

Sultry Beauty on October 28, 2008 at 6:11 PM

AP, when I first saw this, I thought it was going to be the John Gibson piece. See if you can find that and add it to this.

Connie on October 28, 2008 at 6:12 PM

I think Joe did great. He didn’t push his view and was very measured and direct in his answers. I am more impressed with Joe every time I hear him. Shep was playing devil’s advocate well (which I think he showed when he mentioned all of the pro-Joe email) and Joe held his ground and didn’t say what he thought was too much and encouraged people to find out the info for themselves. I keep saying it, the guy is a natural.

He gave a good answer about how Obama would pal around with Israel’s enemies. Shep can’t expect any more depth on foreign policy than that. Iran says “death to Israel.” A vote for Obama is a vote for that. Seems clear.

Terrie on October 28, 2008 at 6:06 PM

Why because he finds gross hyperbole off putting?

Obama’s comments, however wrong he may be, do not make him a “death of israel” president. To say so is simply an exaggeration. The idea that jerusalem can never be on the table is only held by the extreme right in both our country and theirs. Sure israel’s right to exist must be on the table as well…but we cant go in there saying “you give us what we want and then go f*ck yourselves” unless we plan on simply invading and holding the whole territory our damn self.

Playing idiot “black and white” games with geopolitics is just wrong.

The pivot is more important than the hard line…admitting openly that one would consider something guarantees nothing but leaves the most possibilities open…admitting that one would never consider that closes most possibilities off.

If we want to solve the crisis, we need flexibility…at least in rhetoric. Remember, rhetorical suggestions mean nothing, they do not constitute a firm position. they guarantee no surrender…to harp on those suggestions as akin to voting for the “death of israel” is hyperbole.

This is where Obama’s associations become important. Rev. Wright, Ayers, Farrakhan, Chavez etc. These are the people he choses to associate with and support. Now that he is running for President he distances himself from these associates and pledges to support Israel, knowing this is the only way he can be elected. Bill & Hillary kissed up with Arafat and his wife, while kissing up to Jewish voters.

Shep has been biased more than once. I like to listen to him because he’s funny sometimes but he’s a lefty leaner for sure.

Guardian on October 28, 2008 at 6:20 PM

Shep has every right to grill someone who makes a campaign statement. Before Joe begins to speak, he should at least have some reason to state his beliefs.
Now I happen to agree with Joe, Obama is a friend of Palestine and it’s leaders, and generally the liberal left has shown a shift from supporting Israel and we know Obama does not stray far from his base, and Israel by it vote of lack of confidence is all I need. Sometimes I just wish these guys would say to a journalist, “you don’t need details, when over a length of time a candidate has shown he is not entirely ____fill in the blanks, then once I have made that decision, specific reasons are purged because they are no longer necessary, now show me proof the other way and I will ponder it”.

Terrie on October 28, 2008 at 6:21 PM

Shep Smith is a liberal tool. He’s clearly been in the tank for Obama and the left since he came down here to New Orleans and complained about the Katrina recovery as some sort of right-wing plot against poor black people too damned stupid to evacuate.

This is one of those “shut up and sing” moments but in a good way. Why is Smith browbeating an working American about foreign policy when he never bothers to put the same questions to people actually wanting to be in charge of foreign policy?

highhopes on October 28, 2008 at 6:22 PM

Maybe Joe is worried that after Iran or Hamas takes out Israel with a nuclear bomb, Obama would start negotiating with the Israelis, telling them not to overreact (like Georgia).

I completely agree with JP on this, but I really think he’s out of his league here. Probably had a long day or something, and didn’t care enough to fence words with Shep.

To be honest, though, I wasn’t annoyed with Shep at all. Well, when he said that it was “dangerous” — which is always the way a Lefty will shut down a Righty — I got a bit pissed. The only “dangerous” idea there is the one saying you can’t question a candidate, just because he might become president.

Plus, reiterating opposing talking points is exactly what that reporter did with Joe Biden…here everyone applauds. Can’t have it one way or the other.

The McCain camp’s message has bordered on self parody as of late. Retreating so far in logic as to say that anything left of center is marxist…having gone so raging mad that any admission of even HEARING an argument means the death of israel…

From your link:

“One seemingly consistent theme running throughout Barack Obama’s career is his comfort with aligning himself with people who are anti-Israel advocates. This ease around Israel animus has taken various forms. As Obama has continued his political ascent, he has moved up the prestige scale in terms of his associates. Early on in his career he chose a church headed by a former Black Muslim who is a harsh anti-Israel advocate and who may be seen as tinged with anti-Semitism. This church is a member of a denomination whose governing body has taken a series of anti-Israel actions.

As his political fortunes and ambition climbed, he found support from George Soros, multibillionaire promoter of groups that have been consistently harsh and biased critics of the American-Israel relationship.”

Connie on October 28, 2008 at 6:33 PM

However, Obama did introduce the Iran Divestment Bill along with two Democratic Congressmen (Congressmen Barney Frank and Tom Lantos)…The bill languishes, not promoted or pushed; but does serve as a nice campaign prop every now and then.

Here is Obama’s so called support for Israel.
A common tactic, sponsor a bill, let is sit around and use it as a prop.
If it looks like it will help, bring it out. If it looks like it could hurt, let it die.
Other words, just like his many “present” votes, he won’t stick his neck out for anything…anyone knows what happens when a possum sits in the middle of the road…

Now, this is just stupid. The point is that his policies will lead to the death of Israel. He won’t be too sad about it, but it’s not something he is setting out to do. He just wants Israelis (just the Jews) to suffer and give their wealth to the poor Pals, along with gobs of land and weapons. We’ve seen the Clinton approach. After the crap the Tanning Bed Media pulled digging out EVERY FREAKING DETAIL of her past during their little excursion up into Alaska, you still think there’s anything left to find? HAH!! YOU ARE LAUGHABLE!!

*eats*

Grue in the Attic on October 28, 2008 at 6:42 PM

I saw that live on Fox. Shep was so patronizing, arrogant and self-righteous that he has to be an Obama supporter.

Terrie on October 28, 2008 at 6:06 PM

Sheppie: President BUSH SEND HELP SEND HELP NOW SULLY JUMPED IN LINE AGAIN!

sven10077 on October 28, 2008 at 6:42 PM

I am sure as President, Obama would ask the UN to implement strong sanctions on Iran if they blew Israel of the face of the map, however, he would empathize with Iran because they have been so oppressed for so long. Those poor people…send them some money.

mindhacker on October 28, 2008 at 6:43 PM

Frightening to whom Shep? Not To Me!

So JTP couldn’t give you Obama’s Ayers to HAMAS to Khalidi to Wright list of people who wouldn’t much mind if Israel ceased to exist yesterday.

So What?!

Virgins don’t keep company with whores, and Patriots don’t keep company with terrorists, their associates, Or their apologists!

Ps. Here comes the libtard link to the zero context 80′s pic of Rummy shaking Saddam’s hand.

Teddy on October 28, 2008 at 6:44 PM

Note to Fox News,

Its not rocket science,I myself think, that Obama is
extremely dangerous to Israel’s survival!

Btw,listening to CBC,Radio propaganda,they just had a
story of Palestinens robo-calling into America, pushing
for Obama as President!

Their spiel, they say Obama has said they are the most
suffering people on the planet!

Which means,Hopey feels their pain!

Their banking on,that Obama will improve their world!

So,drop support for Israel,do something for Gaza,pull
out of Iraq,no “pre condition’s for Iran” and presto,

Obama is giving the ‘Wink-Wink’,GREEN-LIGHT for the
Iranian goons!!!

And, like reversing ‘the do-over’ of the Americans
founding fathers,he will write off all the American
progress and sacrafice in the Middle East!!!

What makes you as a truck driver think you know more than a great philosopher such as Karl Marx?

econavenger on October 28, 2008 at 6:33 PM

Soon after losing his job as editor of Rheinische Zeitung, a Cologne newspaper, Karl Marx was married…

Well we can see where Marx got his education, from being a journalist, makes sense.
He also lived a nice life with an inheritance, he blew that then lived on donations from his family…he basically lived off other people the rest of his life…he was a professional leech. So it makes sense that he would develop a philosophy that supported and condoned his begging.

right2bright on October 28, 2008 at 6:45 PM

The statement mad by Joe is an exaggeration, a stark black and white picture of an infinitely complex geopolitical situation. Oversimplifications of that magnitude lead to terrible, terrible logic and ultimately flawed policy.

ernesto on October 28, 2008 at 6:30 PM

It’s such a shame. Your elegant, charming, glib Marxist can’t seem to convince as many Jews that he likes them as Kerry, or any other Dem did. Herr Obamarx may be the first Dem to get just 50% of the Jewish vote. A pity. You and I know he’s a jew-lover. Why can’t everyone see him as we do?

JiangxiDad on October 28, 2008 at 6:45 PM

No Friend Of Israel

Election ’08: Barack Obama tells Israel’s supporters he’s on their side. But he’s using the playbook of Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian terrorist who said one thing to the West and another to the radicals who supported him.

Though I’ve got to admit I have zero interest in Smith’s love life (always assumed he was gay), it is not surprising that someone like you would be defending Smith. If you want things to go lower why don’t you throw some of that stuff you use for those of us who aren’t rabid unquestioning McCain supporters. Those of us who actually supported Republicans during the primaries.

When Obama wins next week, you and your tactics will be every bit as much a part of that victory as all the trash the Democrats have done. You, friend (McCainiacs like being called friend), are just as responsible as anyone for driving the wedge in the GOP that allowed a terrorist-loving socialist into the White House for the first time since FDR’s death. You were part of the cadre of strident “Republicans” that destroyed the nation by demanding Republicans and conservatives put principle aside and get behind the “electable” candidate. I place you in the same catagory as Murtha or Kerry when it comes to being an amoral tool of partisanship over principle. The GOP would have won had they stuck to principle.

Obama should be appointing people like you to his administration. That way he gets to call himself “bipartisan” with full knowledge that he doesn’t really have to mean it. People like you delivered the GOP to him and he will gut the nation as a result. There will be a special place in hell for traitors like you.

What is happening to FOX News? Does it have anything to do with the terms Obama and FOX came to in order to get Obama to sit down with O’Reily?

JellyToast on October 28, 2008 at 6:31 PM

That’s a good post, you are right. But still, if Joe makes a public statement in a campaign setting he should (and I think he did) back it up.

right2bright on October 28, 2008

Sure,, I agree,, gotta watch what comes out of your mouth when you step in front of the cameras!
Not like Obama ever said anything stupid or scary in front of the cameras, or on the radio, or in some book!
Nope,, maybe if Obama decided to resign from this campaign and instead go for a master’s plumbing license,, THEN MAYBE SMART PEOPLE LIKE SHEP COULD FIND SOMETHING HE SAYS WORTH GRILLING HIM OVER!!!!

JellyToast on October 28, 2008 at 6:47 PM

Terrye:

I just hate political oversimplifications. I was joking about sarah palin…but i really can’t freaking stand when people make outrageous exaggerations and mascarade them as a logical argument.

I’ve got plenty of issues with both candidates and the way they’ve handled their campaigns. I play devils advocate here because its such an echo chamber…but im a moderate…or given the way the republicans choose to carry on foreign policy these days…a conservative democrat.

ernesto on October 28, 2008 at 6:47 PM

ernesto does not like Sarah or Joe because they are so {ugh} pedestrian. He prefers the man about town, the suave, the debonair…Obama Obama Obama.

MobileVideoEngineer on October 28, 2008 at 6:49 PM

Maybe Joe does not think it is an oversimplification. No doubt there were people who thought the reports of Hitler trying to exterminate an entire race were gross exaggerations too.

The thing is average people have to vote for people who do make these kinds of judgments. And average people have jobs and lives and do not have all the time in the world to study geopolitics, but they have their extincts. And while some people might laugh at those instincts, there have been many times in history when the instincts and basic decency of the American people have made the difference between life and death for millions of people.
