Pelosi: You know what would make Congress more bipartisan? Giving us total control

The boss laughs but I see the deeper wisdom. I think she’s using “bipartisan” as a synonym for “collegial,” in which case she’s right: Reducing the GOP’s presence in the Senate to a rump that can be politely ignored on major policy matters would certainly ease tension by eliminating unpleasant business like serious debates and close votes.

albill on October 28, 2008 at 8:13 PM

“Bi-partisan” means unfettered abortion on demand, the end of union elections, assaults on the 2nd amendment, increases in taxes on business followed by a increase in the unemployment rate followed by unlimited UI benefits, more legislating from the bench, a deep recession and, gerbils for all courtesy of Barney.

Gohawgs on October 28, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Yeah, AP’s psychic reading is correct.

Pelosi means that a super majority in the House will force the Republicans to shut up and take their lumps. No more need on her part to try and entice moderate/liberal Republicans over with the resultant backlash from the leftwing in the Democratic Party.

Remember reading about those glory days of comity and bipartisanship during the Bob Michel and Everett Dirksen years?

So does Nancy.

Can we hope to split the majority between the libs and the more conservative democrats?

Or am I just nucking futs?

ThePrez on October 28, 2008 at 8:17 PM

She’s right. “Bi-partisan” is usually understood to mean contentious between two parties. It will be very contentious between the parties, though the GOP will be powerless to do anything about it. What she meant to say was “non-partisan”, which is usually the ‘good’ way of describing working in a beautiful la la land together.

progressoverpeace on October 28, 2008 at 8:19 PM

Total control. Our way or the highway. After all, that’s the very definition of bipartisanship to a liberal. Just ask McCain.

ThePrez on October 28, 2008 at 8:17 PM

Depends on how big a majority she gets. If it’s like we have now, yeah, on many issues. Those Blue Dogs come from conservative areas and if they stray too far, they could find themselves in trouble come 2010–unless legislation is passed to increase the number of registered Democrat voters through amnesty or something similar. But, if she gets a big enough majority, it won’t matter.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi says after the election she would like to see Congress back in session to pass a second stimulus package.

“Grow the economy, create good paying jobs, in the future in a way that is a green recovery, geared toward Main Street and is fiscally sound,” said Pelosi.

Ok, then will someone please explain WTF the first painful “stimulus” package was for?! Was it a personal gift for all the dems? What the hell!.

4shoes on October 28, 2008 at 8:37 PM

Well, the democrats have ALWAYS believed that the term bipartisan means completely agreeing with them, without reservation, on absolutely everything.

While MY definition of a bipartisan Congress has always been:
“Look out citizens! More stupid laws limiting freedom and more taxes.”

Pretty much the same definition though, really. Nancy’s idea of bipartisanship is the cause, my definition merely reflects the effect.

Bipartisanship among the Washington elite is something to be avoided, not sought.

LegendHasIt on October 28, 2008 at 8:38 PM

“Grow the economy, create good paying jobs, in the future in a way that is a green recovery, geared toward Main Street and is fiscally sound,” said Pelosi.

ThePrez on October 28, 2008 at 8:39 PM

I attended a meeting with Lamar Smith (R-TX) today and he is of the mindset that Obama will win. When I expressed my concerns about a super majority he agreed that it is possible, and in fact, the Dems only really need 57-58 in the Senate because they can usually get 2-3 Republicans to vote with them. This concerns me.

However, when I asked him what we as citizens could do to prevent the Dems from taking the country hard left, he said 1) VOTE, and 2) repeatedly contact politicians. Faces, emails, phone calls, they all matter. Form letters are discounted, individual letters and calls mean much much more. He said even just a couple of dozen letters can make a difference. In his case, he gets a list of the top five issues his constituents are contacting him about every week. Therefore, it doesn’t take much to get his attention.

BE ACTIVE! Send faxes, make calls. Get an eFax account and use it. We can still win this, and we can fight the good fight if we don’t!
