Ohio official OK’d records search on Joe the Plumber

posted at 11:00 am on October 28, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The Columbus Dispatch reports that at least one culprit has emerged from the misuse of public information to attack Joe Wurzelbacher — and to no one’s surprise, she’s a Democrat and a big Barack Obama supporter.  Helen Jones-Kelly decided to check on Wurzelbacher as soon as he became an issue in the third presidential debate.  But this maxed-out donor to Obama swears that she had no political reasons for her sudden curiosity about Wurzelbacher:

Ohio’s inspector general is investigating why a state agency director approved checking the state child-support computer system for information on “Joe the Plumber.”

Helen Jones-Kelly, director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, confirmed today that she OK’d the check on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher following the Oct. 15 presidential debate.

She said there were no political reasons for the check on the sudden presidential campaign fixture though the Support Enforcement Tracking System.

Amid questions from the media and others about “Joe the Plumber,” Jones-Kelley said she approved a check to determine if he was current on any ordered child-support payments.

Those records are supposed to be checked only when some probable cause exists to do so.  What was Jones-Kelley’s probable cause?  She claims that sudden public notoriety is enough to generate an investigation of someone’s status.  I can’t wait to hear what the ACLU makes of that explanation.

The more likely explanation comes from Ace:

Yes, Helen Jones-Kelley (two e’s in Kelley) just happens to be a maximum $2300 contributor to Barack Obama.

What a [expletive] shock, huh?

But she provides this sort of illegal intrusion into personal records for anyone who “comes into the public light.” It’s a public service, you see.

Right.

Riiiiight.

Here’s an even bigger shock:

Democrat Gov. Ted Strickland is satisfied that there are no political overtures to the check on Wurzelbacher, a spokesman said.  “Based on what we know to this point, we don’t have any reason to believe the information was improperly accessed or disclosed by a state employee,” said Keith Dailey, Strickland’s press secretary.

No reason to believe that Wurzelbacher got politically vetted for dirt?  What reason existed to look up his information at that particular point in time?  Had someone filed a complaint against Joe?  The act of opening his court records by a public agency has to have some motivation, and if no reason for a legitimate investigation exists, then by deduction the reasons were illegitimate — and almost certainly a Dumpster Dive for Dirt.

Change You Can Believe In — The State Will Own You.  You’d better believe it.

Pity that Strickland has 3 years left on his governorship. He also wants to extend the sales tax to groceries.

Maybe if the R wins the Attorney General’s office (because Mark Dann had to resign over sexual harassment scandals in his office) this will get investigated.

The Republicans rightly got hammered in the last election in Ohio as there was a lot of corruption. Now it appears the Democrats are following in the same footprints.

She said there were no political reasons for the check on the sudden presidential campaign fixture though the Support Enforcement Tracking System.
Amid questions from the media and others about “Joe the Plumber,” Jones-Kelley said she approved a check to determine if he was current on any ordered child-support payments.

Her reasoning gives her some cover. I can recall instances during which unpaid tax liability, alimony or child-support payments were discovered due to “sudden notoriety.”

The huge difference is that every one of those cases involved criminals, not hard-working citizens like Joe the Plumber.

Bad show lady.

Get used to it. This is only a taste what is coming once Obama takes over in January. I’m becoming increasingly hostile over fools who demanded we STFU and support McCain because he the GOP had to win. Well, that time would have been better spent supporting a real candidate who could rally the troops to victory instead of an old fool who squanders time campaigning in states where the outcome is a foregone conclusion.

One might expect that such a search might be done if a person is reported to have won a lot of money, or to have taken a new job with high pay. After all, there are a lot of deadbeats in the world…

That said, it will be interesting to hear what kind of data Ms.Jone-Kelley accessed, given that her search queries are certainly in a log file somewhere. Did she access only Joe’s income records, or was the query more voluminous than that?

What’s most interesting about these types of systems are that the logs are rarely protected with the same safeguards as are in place for the associated databases.

We need some nice Republican system administrators to step forward with a few leaks of their own. Just don’t forget to use one throwaway yahoo account, manufactured at the public library….

BTW, Just for the record:

I know a lot about Lottery systems. Every Lottery system checks big winners (those requiring a claim – usually $600 and above) against what’s called a “deadbeat” file provided by the other State agencies (Dept of Revenue, Social Services, DMV, etc.)

The vast majority of the Lotteries in the US run exactly the same software which is provided by a company named GTech. Deadbeat checking is built-in.

Gtech has run the Ohio Lottery since 1985.

Every Lottery I know (and it’s more than a few) can tell you stories about the poor shmuck who walked in thinking he hit the jackpot only to walk out with nothing.

The idea that the Social Services department scans the newspapers looking for names to run through their db is absurd.

I prefer the term Social-Fascist – it’s the most descriptive of their collectivist philosophy and tactics.

“Liberal” implies that they favor Liberty -fat chance of that!!!!

I’m ashamed of my Governor. And Secretary of State. And Senator. Odd they’re all democrats. No wonder Ohio’s economy is in the toilet.

In the world of “the One”, “redistribution” also applies to Law Enforcement.

It is a Civil Right that you will be able to get away with murder, as long as you are the right color and are in good standing in the Democratic party.

Remember……………….. you voted for “Change”.

Seven Percent Solution on October 28, 2008 at 11:36 AM

That’s not hyperbole, unfortunately. If you need a little motivation to get out and vote for McCain/Palin, just google “critical race theory.”

So, I’m waiting for the update that this “ho” has had to resign from her job because of all the attention distracting from the election. Think it will happen by this afternoon?

highhopes on October 28, 2008 at 11:36 AM

Yes, I do. She has a job waiting for her either at Acorn or in the Social Security Administration.

WTF is the department of justice doing? They are sitting on their asses and allowing this infringement on privacy and people’s rights.
Come on. What the hell is going on with the country?!

Just wait until Obama installs this system at the national level. That way, the instant someone becomes “famous” by criticizing the One, his entire life will be immediately scoured for any hint of wrong doing. And punished accordingly.

Brown shirting?..check..legalized Brown shirting?..check..Brown shirting apologist Gov?..double check.

I am probably a lot older than most of the people who post here, and I am just amazed at the speed of the descent into the commode that these people are taking the U.S. If there is so much hatred on the left of anything good and American, what chance do we have to ever recover from this? What will it take?

I keep wondering what our surviving WW2 veterans think about today’s America. They must think everything they held dear and fought for was for nothing.

I have two kids in elementary school. Children in America these days are not taught history, so it’s no wonder why we would be destined to repeat history. The most “history” they get taught is a full month of Martin Luther King Jr. No Washington! No Lincoln! No Truman! And definitely no Reagan! No study of what we had to do in order to wipe out slavery, naziism, or communism. I always complain to deaf ears every year, and I have found it’s best to be my kids’ own history teacher. They’ve replaced history with social engineering, tolerance-awareness, and sensitivity training.

It’s very sad.

The DOJ is pretty much in the tank for Obama too.

“…and to no one’s surprise, she’s a Democrat and a big Barack Obama supporter.:

Oh. Well. Good thing it wasn’t one of those evil rethuglicans invading the man’s privacy.

That would be a real crisis!

By all rights any Republican candidate should be mopping the floor with Obama. That McCain has utterly failed to capture his own base’s support and is consistently lagging in the polls is testemant to the fact that the stupid ignorant people who demanded we uncritically and unquestioningly support McCain because he was “electable” betrayed this nation by putting the idea of winning ahead of principle. I would have rather lost with a candidate who stood on principle than watch McCain pander to the left and get nothing in return but the ascendency of the terrorist-loving and unqualified Obama. Fools like these are not “wise men.” They are just as much responsible for the downfall of our nation as Jones-Kelley. The so-called Republicans who thrust McCain into the nomination above better men for the job do not love America as much as they love partisanship.

So, if the Big O becomes president, then all of us here posting can expect an investigation?

We can also expect FoxNews to be shut-down too.

Bob Beckel said on Fox & Friends this morning that Barbara West was finished. I think we’re all finished.

I’m getting all warm & fuzzy and 1984′ish about this.

moonsbreath on October 28, 2008 at 11:45 AM

Get Megyn Kelly on this. Here’s the question: “So, we have a government official who went into the records of a private citizen, and illegally released his information to the press. This official also happens to be someone who illegally contributed more than the maximum allowable $2300 in July of this year, yet you are ’satisfied that there are no political overtures’ involved?” Am I hearing you right, or has the entire world gone nuts?
