Obama beat reporter: who is this guy?

posted at 9:20 am on October 28, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Usually, reporters assigned to candidates get to know them all too well.  They spend months traveling with the candidate in close quarters, see them more often than the candidate’s families, and record all of the significant events of each and every day.  By the end of the campaign, a certain familiarity gets established, and these beat reporters often wind up writing extensive analyses and even books about their experience and the person behind the campaign hype.

According to Peter Nicholas of the Los Angeles Times, absolutely none of that is true about Barack Obama.  Not only has he not interacted much with the press at all, Obama turns out to be …. well, rather dull and uninteresting:

After Clinton’s defeat in the Iowa caucuses, she decided she needed an emergency reinvention. She began mixing with reporters, sipping a glass of wine late at night in the aisle of her campaign plane and unburdening herself about the state of the race. As her prospects dimmed, her accessibility grew. Sometimes she was off the record, but you can’t say she wasn’t fun.

Not so with Obama. One of the striking ironies is that a man who draws tens of thousands of people to his rallies, whose charisma is likened to that of John F. Kennedy, can be sort of a bore.

Discipline is essential for candidates who want to drive home a consistent message, or avoid the self-sabotage that comes with a careless answer. A steely perseverance helps explain why Obama at this point stands a better than even chance of becoming the 44th president. But when you’re exposed to the guy 18 hours a day, it’s a bit maddening. You want him to loosen up.

I’ve watched Obama demonstrate a soccer kick to his daughter in Chicago; devour a cheesesteak in Philly; navigate a roller rink in Indiana; drive a bumper car; and catapult 125 feet in the air on an amusement-park ride called “Big Ben.” He’s done it all with dogged professionalism, but with little show of spontaneity. After all this time with him, I still can’t say with certainty who he is.

A couple of points should be made.  Message discipline is even more critical than ever; Joe the Plumber proved that point.  Anything said by a candidate these days gets shot around the world within seconds, and it’s trapped in YouTube amber forever.  Forty years ago, politicians could get away with pandering to both Tampa Bay Rays fans and Phillies backers, for a lighter example, because no one would report it.  Those days are gone, and the campaigns of both Obama and John McCain reflect this.

McCain, though, is a known quantity.  He has a long record of national service, a history of leadership on difficult issues, and voters know him.  Obama has little record of any kind.  Even in Illinois, he voted “present” rather than create a reviewable record.  He is a cipher to most voters, an eloquent blank screen on which people can project their own desires and aspirations.

After two years on the campaign trail, in the most grueling presidential contest in American history, we are no closer to getting clear answers.  Nicholas concludes that the reporters can’t help:

First Clinton, then John McCain made the argument that Obama is someone we don’t really know. Obama’s supporters counter that we have his record in the U.S. and Illinois senates, two memoirs that reveal his inner thinking and a vast trove of public speaking. Ironically, those of us who were sent out to take his measure in person can’t offer much help in answering who he is, or if he is ready. The barriers set in place between us and him were just too great.

Well, who set those barriers, and why?  Isn’t it incumbent on Nick the New Guy to make himself more transparent, and not less?  Shouldn’t the candidate who has so little experience on the skills necessary for the presidency — executive, military, and diplomatic — share more of himself to make the sale with voters?  If Obama sets barriers between himself and voters, it can only be because more transparency would demonstrate a lack of fitness for the job.

He has a big lead, so he can politely tell everyone to go pound sand. Besides, the press has Palin wardrobe stories to write.

If he’s this way 7 days before an election, how do you think he’ll act when he’s actually in power.

Might be unfit. Lots of bad ideas, regardless. The barrier though is only evidence of the lead he has which requires him to just run out the clock and avoid a big error. A QB with a 3 touchdown lead is going to let the full back grind the clock down. He isn’t going to throw downfield and risk an interception.

And that is why he is so popular. The example I give my kids is this. I say the sky is bright blue and you say the sky is dark blue. We go to a BO rally and he proclaims that just like us he knows the sky is blue. We both leave the rally know deep in our hearts that BO believes the color of the sky is exactly as we see it.

There was no need for him to take any risks at all when the Media was already in the tank and therefore the propaganda extension of his campaign. Now the media is crying about a situation they set up. All I know is, these guys placed a big bet that not only will he win but will be a good President. A few days after the election, when the riots are quelled and most of the fires extinguished, the Old Media, prompted by criticism from the New Media, will conduct a post mortem on itself.

Because it is inherently unwilling to blame itself for the debacle and because the margin of victory for McCain will obliterate any argument for racist voter fraud, it will turn with a vengeance on the nearest available scapegoat: Barack Hussein Obama.

Then and only then, will the vetting begin. And it will be ferocious. Heaven hath no rage like a love to hatred turned nor hell a fury like a media scorned.

Shivas Irons on October 28, 2008 at 10:01 AM

Well, who set those barriers, and why? Isn’t it incumbent on Nick the New Guy to make himself more transparent, and not less? Shouldn’t the candidate who has so little experience on the skills necessary for the presidency — executive, military, and diplomatic — share more of himself to make the sale with voters? If Obama sets barriers between himself and voters, it can only be because more transparency would demonstrate a lack of fitness for the job.

These aren’t Obama’s barriers to set. They are barriers set by the media.

Odd how the media wrings their hands now that they weren’t critical enough about evaluating the Bush Administration’s case for war, but they now roll over and play dead for Obama. With Obama’s bizarre background, you’d think that a noteworthy minority would be going after him like a pack of wild dogs. I find it astounding that more of them aren’t.

BuckeyeSam on October 28, 2008 at 10:02 AM

Not to matter. He has people like Helen Jones-Kelley, in a governor of Ohio appointed job who can snoop into the private lives and files of any citizen and brush it off as routine. There are many like her in government, MSM that he and his very dangerous ilk can count on, like the brown shirts of nazi Germany. They will look out for his interests whether they know what they are or not. Doesn’t seem important as long as we get a black man elected.
Be afraid of this man, very afraid.

We have found out more about Sarah Palin in two months than we have about Barack Obama in two years. I personally am glad to have had the information about Palin, even the smears and lies, so I can make up my own mind about her. I am refusing to vote for Barack Obama precisely because I have not been able to learn enough about him to trust him as President of the United States.

Obama is a product who has been brilliantly packaged and marketed by David Axelrod, with the complicity of the leaders of the Democratic Party and the media. My own view is that they promoted him because they knew after 2004 that Democrats can no longer win a Presidential election without close to 100% black turnout. Howard Dean and the DNC knew they had to find a “clean” black candidate who was not Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. They didn’t care about anything else in his background. They knew the media would be either enthralled by the prospect of a black president or afraid of the race card and would not dig into his history.

Now we get into the self-fulfilling prophecy time, when Obama has “run a brilliant campaign,” “maintained his message and discipline,” and all that hooey. The media know they are guilty as hell, so now they are coming up with lame excuses about why Obama is a shoo-in and “the people have decided they don’t need any more informationm about him.” It’s very predictable. After the election they will be too buy writing stories about how we have made history and all that.

We’re never going to know a damn thing about this man. All we can do if he is elected is pray for him and for our country.

Judging from the photo, the reporter appears to be white. Maybe that’s the problem. As Obama wrote in his book, he learned how to disguise his true self when interacting with whites, so as not to appear too threatening to whites, who are all inherently racist.

It’s got to be tough spending so much of your time trying to disguise your contempt for so many of your fellow countrymen.

“The barriers set in place between us and him were just too great.”

That’s just blame shifting. The real reason is that they are incompetent. If they can’t do the job, fire them and hire some who can do it.

Of course if they had done some research, and the treasure trove at Chicago PBS archive could have done for a good start, they could have asked him more than “Do you like Philly Cheesesteak”, they could have started to accomplish something.

I got an idea, Nick. Call the office to get a copy of the Khalidi tape. Play it on the back of the plane for the rest of the press and then speak to Obama about it. See how opaque they are then.

Unless Republican’s and independents show up to vote in numbers never seen before, and I’m talking about 150-190 million real voters, we will find out whom Obama is on 1/21/09.

Samhain on October 28, 2008 at 9:33 AM

Total turnout in 2004 was about 120 million. If we get 65 million or so votes for McCain, especially in the right states, we won’t need to find out on 1/21/09.

Steve Z on October 28, 2008 at 10:22 AM

Any others??

TugboatPhil on October 28, 2008 at 9:59 AM

Before the last debate I posted in a thread here that BO won it hands down. I knew this for certain because BO could have stood on stage putting kittens into a blender live on national TV and he would still have won the debate. A messiah can do no wrong and for BO to be looked at unfavorably would tarnish the messiah message and that can not be allowed.

A little OT but still in the BO can do no wrong vein.
Does anyone think there is something about his birth that would disqualify him? I find his actions surrounding his birth certificate very strange. If he is elected and it is found out he violated the law what would happen? Does Biden take over or can we expect the democrats to go hog wild with a “the people have spoken” attempt to keep him? Would it open up 2016 for Arnold the Terminator to run for the presidency?

At this point, after this much scrutiny and 24 hour a day news coverage, if Nicholas says he doesn’t know who either candidate is, he’s a fu*kng moron.

Dave Rywall on October 28, 2008 at 10:07 AM

Nicholas didn’t say he doesn’t know who McCain is, he said he doesn’t know who Obama is. Stop w/the equivalency bullshit. That’s all you got and it is tiresome. You are the moron b/c you have no reading comprehension skills.

Obama beat reporter: who is this guy?

You ask this in the last week of October? Some press we have.

Others have said it but it bears repating.

Bama’s evasion and barriers are the purposeful.

He never would have beaten Hillary if he did evade and hide.

He is neither “unformed” nor “empty”. He is full of race-based Marxist socialism and a negative view of this country, from its legal structure and Constitution to its people, excepting his fellow travelers and useful idiots.

I.e., he is Bill Ayer’s and Rev. Wright’s idea of the perfect President.

Non-fellow travelers and unuseful idiots are in for a hard, one-way ride.

ctmom was right the first time. We have our Manchurian candidate. And, of course, he’s looking for the gullible liberals to vote him in.

Is the information posted before TRUE AND VERIFIED? I got an email about it, and want to make sure before I send it off. If it is true, how in the HELL can the media not have looked into any of this?

This is the biggest fraud and jedi mind trick ever played on the American people (since global warming)

The admission of his drug use might give a clue. Certain recreational drugs have a profound and permanent effect on the part of the brain that allows us to experience joy and optimism. Some say it takes away spontaneity and the zest for life and dulls the ability to experience love.

No where in the article does Nicholas discuss his personal knowledge of John McCain, yet you accuse him of being a moron for claiming not to know “either candidate”. Again, you attempt to bring McCain into the discussion, where he does not belong. I can only assume it is b/c again it offers cover for your boy. Someone says Obama is this, and you say, well McCain is that. Never an in-depth discussion about the many flaws of your candidate. Just finger-pointing at McCain to distract from the very serious character flaws, and lack of judgement, history, experience and legislative record that is Senator Gubment.

Better for him to sit in silence, then to be tossed off the plane.

I know when Sarah Palin’s water broke but I don’t know whether Obama took an Economics class in college.

That’s insane.

Dear Captain Dense:

Yes, the article speaks specifically about knowing Obama. I said if someone claimed to not know EITHER candidate, as in you’re a stupid dipsh*t if you claim to not know Obama and you’re a stupid dipsh*t if you claim to not know McCain. I am not trying to say McCAIN TOO McCAIN TOO; I am merely pointing out the stupid dipsh*tness of his claim that, after months and months of media scrutiny, he has the gall to claim he doesn’t know who a candidate is – ANY CANDIDATE. But you fail to grasp this, because you’re Captain Dense.

Dave Rywall on October 28, 2008 at 11:15 AM

Hey, there was that time Barry went to the press section of the plane and showed off his crotch to the giggling and squealing lady reporters. I guess Nicholas must be a straight guy, ’cause he apparently doesn’t consider that to be “accessibility.”

All we can do if he is elected is pray for him and for our country.

Besides the one on his head, DRywall has a point. (hada get that in) but I want to take it a bit further.

I believe that this “beat” reporter knows already who Obama is and has ignored who Obama was for this long and may be exasperated or exhausted from having to continued to fool himself and the public.

The cop-out is to say that Obama is an enigma and so we still don’t know who he is–as if there something else to discover. The fact he hides his true self is all we need to know and says more than a descriptive biography.

geckomon on October 28, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Good point. Obama’s inaccessibility, in and of itself, is a pretty good indication of “who he is.” So is his campaign’s disturbing tendency to crucify questioners and cut off stations whose anchors dare to ask tough questions. If the press weren’t so distracted by giving Obama constant fellatio, they’d be extremely disturbed by his treatment of them and what it indicates about their future under an Obama presidency.
