Post-racial media: White people shouldn’t vote

posted at 1:45 pm on October 27, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Brilliant, cutting satire or earnest policy suggestion?  The Philadelphia Inquirer runs Jonathan Valania’s column proposing a moratorium on Caucasian votes in Pennsylvania as a response to bald assertions of Keystone State racism from John Murtha and Ed Rendell.  Valania says whites in the hinterlands can’t be trusted with the franchise:

As a lifelong Caucasian, I am beginning to think the time has finally come to take the right to vote away from white people, at least until we come to our senses. Seriously, I just don’t think we can be trusted to exercise it responsibly anymore.

I give you Exhibit A: The last eight years.

In 2000, Bush-Cheney stole the election, got us attacked, and then got us into two no-exit wars. Four years later, white people reelected them. Is not the repetition of the same behavior over and over again with the expectation of a different outcome the very definition of insanity? (It is, I looked it up.)

Exhibit B is any given Sarah Palin rally.

Exhibit C would be Ed Rendell and John Murtha, who in separate moments of on-the-record candor they would come to regret, pointing out that there are plenty of people in Pennsylvania who just cannot bring themselves to pull the lever for a black man – no matter what they tell pollsters.

“Got us attacked” — you have to love the world-began-in-2001 mentality behind that statement.  Jonathan, we got attacked in 1993 (World Trade Center I), 1996 (Khobar Towers), 1998 (embassy bombings in Tanzania and Kenya) and 2000 (USS Cole).  The result of 9/11, which apparently Valania thinks we somehow provoked (by using the phrase “got us attacked”), was at least one war both presidential candidates have pledged to fight harder.  The other, Iraq, is about to wind down completely in victory, no thanks to Barack Obama, who demanded that we flee Iraq when the going got tough.

That’s why I tend to lean away from the “satire” explanation of the column, and lean more towards “earnest and mild hyperbole”.  Even if Valania isn’t serious about stripping white people of the franchise, which I’ll assume, it’s clear that he thinks the only reason left to oppose Barack Obama is racism.  Apparently the editors of the Inquirer also think the same thing, or at least that the allegation is credible enough to publish a column that suggests a color barrier to voting as a solution to it.  He picks up where Obama left off in describing his white neighbors as basically paranoid bigots who cling to guns and religion in fear of the Coming Black Menace.

In other words, Valania is nothing more than a liberal bigot who sees the entire world in terms of race.  According to this column, Obama’s positions on abortion, taxes, federal spending, national security, and diplomacy are so noncontroversial that the only reason to oppose them is the color of Obama’s skin.  That speaks to Valania’s narrow-mindedness, and that of the Inquirer, much more than it does the people of western Pennsylvania.

I pretty sure I don’t remember voting for this turd to be the voice of “White America”

If this writer looks at the polls maybe he’ll see where the racial vote goes, when 98% of Black America is voting for Obama, and many of those don’t know the difference between his policies and those of John McCain.

Hyberbole or not, it’s just MORE Mis-INFORMATION that’s swallowed WHOLE.

CherokeeJack on October 27, 2008 at 1:53 PM

We in the GOP – have to ask ourselves a question:

Is Obama filled a perceived leadership vacuum?

George Bush is good man – and yet I find myself upset at his lack of partisan leadership. A leader fights those who fight his policies and his party – George Bush, in an effort to demonstrate respect for his office, has shown little hard aggressive leadership.

I like GW as a person – but I don’t respect his domestic leadership skills as head of the GOP and POTUS.

The result has been anger in the GOP, and disgusting gumption by the left.

Obama’s rise is (perhaps) a reflection of the GOP’s complete lack of stones and leadership.

A vacuum.

Perhaps?

jake-the-goose on October 27, 2008 at 1:53 PM

Pretty much in keeping with liberation theology.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 27, 2008 at 1:53 PM

Good idea…leave the voting to a group that has the highest unemployment, highest high school drop out rate, lowest income, highest fatherless families, least educated…yeah, that will work.
Now if he chose just Black Republicans, then he would have, one of least unemployed, highest high school graduation, higher income, “complete” family, most educated…then, yeah, that would work.
Amazing how 85% of one group can bring down the other 15%, and no one see it.

I wonder what would happen if there was an article published that opined that blacks shouldn’t be allowed to vote in this election?

You think he/she would be wondering when it would be safe to go outside of the house or the workplace.

Satire or not, this would be deemed hate speech if it advocated taking the vote away from women, minorities, homosexuals, Hollywood liberals, or any other group. The DOJ should immediately launch an investigation against Valania and the Inquirer. Not that the DOJ would ever do their job in protecting ALL the people from hate speech but this is decidedly a case of enflaming the passions of all the angry black thugs out there that are already spoiling for a fight and planning to torch cars and loot things if Obama loses next week.

kybowexar on October 27, 2008 at 1:59 PM

I’ve been called “nigger.” So what?

I don’t waste a lot of energy complaining about a term which does not apply to me. Ignore it or you will go crazy.

Just the other day I was watching a guy park his rig before heading to lunch. I watched as one guy amongst a group on the corner just yelled “nigger!” at the emerging driver. There was no reason, no cause, no apology.

If this guy had responded, he probably would have ended up in jail or the hospital. So he just looked at the guys and smiled. I did too.

Point is, crap like that happens to all of us. People are rude and will insult us all throughout our lives. We can’t go chasing down every wildeyed accusation or insult and remain sane.

Therefore: The only reason why whites don’t also overwhelmingly support Obama is because of racism.

The Race Card – it is easy to say and probably of no help, but here it is (and my apology for the crap you get – my sympathy on that.)

My mom used to tell us kids that we should feel sorry for folks like that, because what kind of life do they have to treat people like that.

I used to think that was fairly crappy reasoning – except that it is true. The trucker you watched showed more class than his tormentors. He may have even showed them grace as well. I hope that in his heart he realized it is true – he truly was the better human being in that encounter. Does not make it easier or even more fun. Heck, it does not even make it reasonable or purposeful – but it does not take away from the fact it is true.

It is what Jesus meant about the “other cheek” – not to be a doormat, but to realize the fact of the situation.

kybowexar on October 27, 2008 at 2:10 PM

And, speaking of redistribution…

In a local restaurant my server had on an ‘Obama
‘08 tie. I laughed as he had given away his
political preference–just imagine the coincidence. When the
cheque came, I decided not to tip the server and explained to
him that I was exploring the Obama “redistribution of wealth”
concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I
was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed
more in need–the homeless guy outside. The server angrily
stormed from my sight.
I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to
thank the server inside as I’ve decided he could use the
money more. The homeless guy was grateful.
At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution
experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the
money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that
I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual
recipient needed money more.
I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to
swallow in concept than in practical applications.

Didn’t you know? That’s why they wear birkenstocks.

Needs to happen more often. Maybe I should start asking my waiters who they support, if it’s not obvious.

WOW, Great article!!!

hawkdriver on October 27, 2008 at 1:59 PM

Bad Editors (Note: The Title Should be, Everyman for Himself, from the last page of the article) Why is the Media Bias so bad this election cycle. This falls under Freakonomics.

Bad Editors
Why? I think I know, because had my life taken a different path, I could have been one: Picture yourself in your 50s in a job where you’ve spent 30 years working your way to the top, to the cockpit of power … only to discover that you’re presiding over a dying industry. The Internet and alternative media are stealing your readers, your advertisers and your top young talent. Many of your peers shrewdly took golden parachutes and disappeared. Your job doesn’t have anywhere near the power and influence it did when your started your climb. The Newspaper Guild is too weak to protect you any more, and there is a very good chance you’ll lose your job before you cross that finish line, 10 years hence, of retirement and a pension.

Dr Evil on October 27, 2008 at 2:14 PM

That is one of the most retarded columns I have ever seen, and that is saying something.

Paradox Drive on October 27, 2008 at 2:15 PM

It will be a short one. We are the ones with the guns.

Old Hippie Vet on October 27, 2008 at 2:13 PM

Depends on what happens with the military…

*eats*

Grue in the Attic on October 27, 2008 at 2:15 PM

If you lived where I do, you wouldn’t entertain frivolous thoughts of “satire.”

What’s really sad is that most of the people who claim, “Change IS Coming!!” don’t realize that BO does not care about them .

Obama’s deal is all about getting into power, taxing and coercing the broad middle class (regardless of color) into submission.

It’s that simple.

Cody1991 on October 27, 2008 at 2:15 PM

What a dumba*s column.

Almost as dumba*s as blaming 911 exclusively on the Democrats or the Republicans.

Dave Rywall on October 27, 2008 at 1:56 PM

Exclusively? How about blaming the suicidally violent Islamist supremecists?

trubble on October 27, 2008 at 2:15 PM

Great piece, but are we doing all we can to ensure as many horrible white people see this as possible?

MB4 on October 27, 2008 at 2:12 PM

Uhm…I was not speaking for God, but from what I can see of your list – you aren’t either.

These are not prophets we are talking about. We are talking about flawed human beings who are elected to represent us in government. Government is allowed by God. He is not shocked or dismayed. If, may it never be, we do indeed get Darth Barry as president -then we deserve him.

There is hope a revival will happen and all that, but what I mean is that our country has not gone down so far as to be given that government. There is still hope. Hey, McCain is not my vision of the future, but dang I will bet on his future (and our country’s) a whole lot more than with Darth Barry!

You are advocating personal responsibility?

Well, okay, but just this once.

kybowexar on October 27, 2008 at 2:19 PM

Dang – why can I not remember to end the quote?

kybowexar on October 27, 2008 at 2:19 PM

Oh, he was being serious?

James OK on October 27, 2008 at 2:19 PM

And so it begins….

We might as well get used to it. If the One gets elected, it won’t be satire anymore.

William F. Buckley supported a literacy test for voters years ago and would have been quite happy to see entire swaths of the population denied their right.

sanguine4 on October 27, 2008 at 2:02 PM

You got a link to back that up? All I could find were right-hating extremists who, at best, made the same general claim that you do and (also like you) provide no real proof. I’d be interested seeing the full context and argument that he made in advocating a literacy test. I’m sure it is far more reasoned than the blogosphere is claiming.

I’ll end with this Buckley quote that is timeless and true-

“The best defense against usurpatory government is an assertive citizenry.”

I’m prepared to be assertive no matter what happens next Tuesday. McCain’s brand of soft liberalism is no better than Obama’s blatant socialism.

highhopes on October 27, 2008 at 2:20 PM

if elected, Obama will be the most divisive potus ever. It will be ugly I think

jp on October 27, 2008 at 1:47 PM

Well, sense Lincoln, anyway.

Count to 10 on October 27, 2008 at 2:20 PM

I am going to guess you are not eating there again. Unless you enjoy a “liberal” amount of spit in your food. (Laugh)

kybowexar on October 27, 2008 at 2:13 PM

So sorry – I got that from an e-amail, and wish I’d thought of it. Should have stated earlier but failed to do so.

The Obamas, win or lose, will have set race relations back by at least 30 years. It’s all not evident, yet.

The biggest Bravo Sierra is that he’s running as a uniter, and all the other huey. I’ve never heard him say a word about that, except in the cliches and ads.
