Obama: Don’t expect any “sudden lurches to the left”

posted at 12:37 pm on October 27, 2008 by Allahpundit

Via Ben Smith. The money quote:

I don’t think we’re going to have time to engage in a bunch of crazy things that people, the McCain campaign specifically, has suggested we might.

Reminds me of when he told a crowd he couldn’t take their guns even if he wanted to, which some interpreted as a tacit admission that he would if he could and I interpreted as simply his way of trying to reassure voters who won’t be persuaded about his intentions. The same people will seize on this as evidence that the only reason he’s staying away from craziness is because he won’t have time for it, but I think it’s another case of him trying to reach fencesitters whose suspicions have made them otherwise unreachable: I.e., “The bottom line is that you’re not going to get socialism from us, even if you refuse to believe that I think socialism’s ‘crazy.’”

This comes back to the central question of The One’s character, whether he’s a radical sympathizer (the Corsi theory) or whether he’s a hyper-ambitious pol who was and is willing to shake any hand that can further his own power (the Freddoso theory). If Freddoso’s right and if moderation is in fact the best way to consolidate Democratic gains in November, there’s at least a chance Obama would govern from the center-left. If either of those things isn’t true, then good luck, America.

A rather important exit question via Geraghty: Which policies specifically does Obama not consider “crazy”?

The first thing that Clinton set out to change was gays being allowed to serve in the US military. I’m sure Obama will make that look centrist in comparison.

How about the “crazy things” from his own mouth?

Perhaps he could address those?

Do find the time there Darth Barry.

It’s not the timeline we’re worried about. It’s the ultimate goal.

If your policies are chosen because they advance a socialist agenda but are ‘tame’ enough that you can get them through without too much of a fight, I’ve got an issue with those policies.

JadeNYU on October 27, 2008 at 12:44 PM

The same argument he made with guns…”I don’t have the votes anyway.”

“I DON’T THINK WE’LL HAVE TIME.” Give me a BREAK!!!! You know you want to though, don’t you Barry…just salivating to go WAY left, you socialist, activist!

If he takes off his shirt I’m sure we’d see his Che T-shirt or some red star T-shirt that are all the rage with the kids these days.

Considering that almost every major figure in his life and development is an avowed Marxist, which is more likely?

Crazy things…..Hmmmmm…..

FOCA
EFCA
Nationalized health care
Increased capital gains

Riiiiiighhhhhhtttt.

Don’t do anything crazy now, Barry. In other words, don’t do as I say. Do as I don’t do?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 27, 2008 at 12:46 PM

Anyone who thinks he will govern from the center-left is a fool. Just take a look at his closest supporters; every single one is a closet Marxist at best. Every single democrat has turned on We The People! He will put William Ayers in his cabinet, mark my words! And that is just the beginning of the end if the dumbed down electorate puts him in office.

ganeshpuri89 on October 27, 2008 at 12:42 PM

Oh, that was rich. My favorite part, even though I knew it was coming:

I went outside, walked back up to Wentworth, gave the homeless guy a $10 bill, and asked him to walk down to the restaurant on the corner and thank the waiter there who was wearing the “Obama 08” tie as I’ve decided he could use the money more than my waiter who had actually earned the $10. The homeless fellow smiled in grateful disbelief, tossed his sign in the hedge, and promptly bounded for the liquor store across the street.

Vashta.Nerada on October 27, 2008 at 12:46 PM

The bottom line is that you’re not going to get socialism from us, even if you refuse to believe that I think socialism’s ‘crazy.’

What double talk TRIPE!
Even if you refuse to believe that I think socialism’s crazy…its not about us you idiot, we’re asking you…do you believe socialism is crazy!!!

This is BS straight out of Rahm Emanuel’s talking points. Get all these conservative Democrats elected in Southern and suburban districts by promising no big lurches to the Left. Then force them all to vote however Nancy Pelosi wants them to vote, or face a primary challenge in two years.

The fact is that Obama will owe his election to black voters and the anti-war hard Left, period. He will not owe it to the Blue Dogs in Congress. He is not going to do jack to help them get reelected. His tax program will be rammed through and they are all going to have to go back to their constituents in 2010 having voted for the biggest tax increase in U.S. history, just liike all those poor slobs did back in 1994.

He talks about working with Republicans, while his campaign and the DNC are out all over the country demonizing Republicans, scaring senior citizens and women. Why the hell does he think Republicans are going to do anything but tell him to go to Hell?

sign a bill (f.o.c.a.) which strikes down every

The democrats have already been braying

they get a super-majority in the senate. Good
grief, how can anybody believe that if the
dems control the legislative and executive
branches of the U.S. they won’t turn this
country into a quagmire of marxism?

Connie on October 27, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Nothing sudden because they won’t have time? This is a joke right? (as Biden would say).

The truth is he’s planning on having 8-10 years, a supermajority in Congress and prosecutors and the courts in his hands to implement his vision of societal change. The first change will be intimidation of journalists and consolidation of media power. Hell, that’s already underway.

That’s not exactly saying he WON’T engage in a bunch of crazy things. He just may want to so a few other things first. First he wants to restructure out economy…

This wasn’t exactly an impassioned defense against what McCain said. Sounded like he pretty much agreed.

Disagree. I think it’s yet another reminder that he is stupid, doesn’t know what he’s saying when he says it, and will say anything that comes to mind, knowing that he doesn’t have to clam up when stupid thoughts come to mind because the press fully has him protected.

In that last part, he has been vindicated. No public figure in my life has been so utterly guarded by a normally mercenary and vicious press as this freak.

Why is that? Why him? What is so different and special about him that the press has engaged in what can only be described as a vast conspiracy to filter out things that they believe will hurt him?

Hmmm.

Trust not one damned thing that comes flying out of B.O.’s mouth between now and Election Day. It most likely is just another ploy of his to placate his growing legion of critics. Nah. he won’t be that stupid. The confirmation hearing would be a bloodbath. He will simply put some apparatchik in the bowels of the Department of Education who will steer millions of dollars of grants to Ayers’ “Small Schools Program,” and rewrite the Title I program to include all sorts of race-theory curricula written by Ayers.

We’re gonna have to watch every department, pore through every budget and appropriations bill, and look at the resume and background of every appointee if Obama is elected. There are enough of us around who know how this works; we’ve seen it before. There are a million ways to subtly shift the direction of policy and funding in a $3 trillion federal budget.

What, are you taking off and not sticking around for the Socialist wave?

Rick on October 27, 2008 at 12:57 PM

Guys you keep missing the point.

Look at the “conservatives” jumping ship. Look at their reasoning. “I can only hope that he won’t do what he claims to support.”

Obama is speaking to those conservatives. He’s speaking to the moderates (which he desperately needs) who hope and pray that he won’t do what he says he wants to do.

And now he’s saying “he can’t”?

Any journalist/reporter worth their notepad would immediately follow up with – “Why not? Do you not want the things you claim to intellectually support? The things you sold your campaign on?”

The leftists have screamed for 4+ years that Bush was out to destroy the constitution. Now you have a guy that has said he doesn’t even like the principles upon which the constitution is based and would like to see them changed (So much for a “constitutional scholar” eh?)

Hello?! Is this thing on?!

Skywise on October 27, 2008 at 12:57 PM

You’re argument is that he doesn’t want to take from a poor college kid to give to a homeless person.

However, once we establish that it is acceptable (even optimal) to spread the wealth from those who have it to those who don’t, who gets to define how much is enough and how much isn’t?

From the point of view of a homeless person living on the streets, a college kid that gets to go home to a nice warm dorm, eat a made-to-order pizza and watch some cable t.v. is living like a king.

“The bottom line is that you’re not going to get socialism from us, even if you refuse to believe that I think socialism’s ‘crazy.’”

Obama’s right; I refuse to believe him. Choose your metaphor: he’s the emperor with no clothes or a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I want him put down, figuratively speaking.

Have I missed something?

Bernie said it best in his book “Bias”. The left doesn’t think they are on the left, they think they are right in the middle.
That is what makes them so dangerous. They recognize their beliefs as being middle of the road, and maybe even a little conservative.
When he says crazy left, he has a different perspective then us. When you are on the way left, a little left is no big deal.
The question is, is he willing to shift to the right?…I don’t think so, not even a little. If Pelosi and Reid never considered it, why should he with a mandate of both houses?

I heard a similar story about a father and his collegiate daughter. She was planning to vote for Obama, and fully into the redistribution idea, and her father was trying to convince her otherwise. “How are you doing in English?”, he asked. She responded that it took a lot of effort, but she was getting an ‘A’ in the class. “How is Liz doing?” Liz was a friend in her class that lived in the same dorm. “Oh, Liz is always partying when she should be studying – she’ll be lucky to get a ‘C’ in the class.” was the response. “Well, why don’t you talk to the professor to have him give some of your points to Liz, so you can both have ‘B’s?” asked dad. Her response: “But dad! That wouldn’t be fair, I’ve worked hard for my ‘A”! Dad’s response: “How is that different than taking money from someone who earned it?”

I get it. No “SUDDEN” lurches to the left — more like a systematic, steady, slow-but-sure BULLDOZE to the left with 100 more D’s than R’s in the House and a filibuster-proof senate…

Edouard on October 27, 2008 at 1:17 PM

Don’t expect any “sudden lurches to the left”

Oh really? So, we’re supposed to believe and take at his word that the Democrats, who currently have a majority in Congress, aren’t going to push radical left positions? 70 Democrats are signed on to the Kucinich Department of Peace transformation bill. You’ve got Democrats all over the place pushing ideas like Socialism Take 401(k) or advocating higher taxes and massive defense spending cuts.

He’s going to stand up to all of those policy pronouncements? Hardly. That’s his core constituency. They’re going to want to see hope and change – and quick. Anything less would cause a revolt from the far left.

I just don’t understand how there could be SO MANY stupid people that would vote for him. After everything that has been discovered about this creep, his books, his associations, and now this interview about “spreading the wealth” and the problem with the constitution…..it’s like a Jim Jones moment.

I don’t think we’re going to have time…

…so what if you did have time, Barry?

MadisonConservative on October 27, 2008 at 1:18 PM

The left doesn’t think they are on the left, they think they are right in the middle.

Bleh. ‘In the middle’ wish-washy ditherers.

Say what you will about them, but you gotta respect people with the conviction to be hardcore, balls-out commie totalitarians or heavily armed anarchists.

Put your ideological peddle to the metal.

I know you will agree that waiter has every right to express his political opinion. My opinion is that I would refuse to be served by that schmuck, or I would just get up and leave, after telling the management why they lost a customer.

Which is why I think that there will be some form of violence no matter who wins next week. Obama loses- Detroit burns and Maxine Waters will reprise her “No Justice No Peace” role in Watts. Obama wins- the half of the nation that is to the right of both candidates will lose all faith in government and take matters into their own hands.
