McCaskill on the Obama audio: He was talking about middle-class tax cuts

posted at 1:15 pm on October 27, 2008 by Allahpundit

Really? In 2001, in a discussion about sweeping social changes that the civil-rights movement did and didn’t achieve, “put[ting] together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change” was actually just Obama-speak for knocking a few points off the middle tax brackets? From a guy who wasn’t even a federal legislator at the time? This isn’t even spin; it’s McCaskill putting her fingers in her ears and chanting to drown out the question.

Which Scarborough, by trying to frame it as a simple rhetorical misstep, is happy to let her do.

If the Obama tape is on MSNBC, Obama is in BIG trouble!

How does McCaskill claim that Obama was talking about the tax code? Obama on the tape was talking about the courts, and the Constitution vests the power to raise taxes in CONGRESS.

McCaskill and Obama have sworn an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. Some day, when they have nothing better to do (like plundering wealth), they might want to read it.

Obama did not “pick the wrong words”! Good heavens

What kind of snowjob is Clare McCaskill trying to foist on America?

He went on and on and on and on for several minutes, thinking quite carefully about his words as he did.

We heard in detail AT LAST from his own lips what his philosophy is. He is opposed to American liberty and in favor of forced wealth redistribution. Everyone heard this!

It’s Chicago. He won’t get the death penalty; he’ll probably get sent to sensitivity/ethnic studies training so he can explore the righteous rage that forced him to resort to violence. Then he’ll write a book about how racist America is and how he would never would have been driven to violence if only more tax money had been spent on his inner-city neighborhood. Then he’ll be deemed rehabilitated and given early release so that he can become a community organizer.

BTW SPREAD THE WEALTH, is different From INCOME DISTRIBUTION. France has Spread the Wealth taxes, 15 percent approximately on your net assets each year in addition to income taxes. Given how much Obama likes France, we can expect this to come across the Atlantic.

You aren’t McCaskill’s target audience. The press and the poorly informed voter are.

Essentially the press can now frame it as Obama supported middle class tax relief in the tape and the Republicans claim it is socialism. Poorly informed voters will here the press discuss it and presume the truth is closer to Obama’s supporters’ statements. After all, the press couldn’t be that far in the tank for Obama, could they?

18-1 on October 27, 2008 at 3:54 PM

Gee Joe, I think he’s pretty damn clear what he’s talking about and I doubt very much if Claire has even heard the WBEZ interview (see link below)

How many times does Obama need to say “redistribution of wealth” for some people to realize he is talking about redistribution of wealth. The fact that he was talking about it in 2001 indicates it has been on his mind for some time and given the context of the conversation, there can be no mistake about what’s he’s talking about since he also talks about about the mechanisms needed to accomplish redistribution and the practical limitations (unfortunately in his view) of the Supreme Court to provide remedies.

As if the top 1% wage earners paying 60% of the federal tax bill isn’t fair enough. We know who he is targeting, but someone needs to ask Obama at what rate of taxation does the system become fair.

We’re approaching the point at which nearly half of the wage earners don’t pay federal income taxes. Put another way, the subset of wage earners who are most likely to receive additional payments, access federal programs and be a net draw on the system is likely to rise under an Obama administration. At what point or percentage of wage earners not paying federal taxes will the system become fair? Should only 40% of wage earners pay? When the majority of the public is able to vote themselves money, the system has reached the tipping point.

Here’s the full interview: scroll down to Sept 6, 2001
