Video: Palin talks clothes
posted at 4:58 pm on October 26, 2008 by Allahpundit
Jonathan Martin wonders why she’d broach this subject, thereby keeping it alive for another news cycle. The likely answer, per his colleague: Because she had nothing to do with the RNC clothes purchases and is boiling about what it’s done to her image.
[T]he final straw for Palin and her allies was the news that the campaign had reported spending $150,000 on her clothes, turning her, again, into the butt of late-night humor.
“She never even set foot in these stores,” the senior Republican said, noting Palin hadn’t realized the cost when the clothes were brought to her in her Minnesota hotel room.
“It’s completely out-of-control operatives,” said the close ally outside the campaign. “She has no responsibility for that. It’s incredibly frustrating for us and for her.”
McCain defended her this morning on MTP but doubtless he’d like to change the subject. Maybe tomorrow.
The video I really wanted to give you was of her warning Obama not to pop the champagne just yet — “You kinda get the feeling that the Obama campaign thinks this whole election process is just a formality” — but I can’t find it. If you see it somewhere, I’d be grateful for the tip. In lieu of that, you’ll find Hasselbeck’s intro of Palin today below. Exit quotation: “This is deliberately sexist.”

The unwashed masses of America trying to make ends meet…
Um… the masses of America are a lot less unwashed than anywhere else in the wold, dude. And they are making ends meet a lot better, are a lot better educated, and by the way, a lot less racist. You basically don’t know WTF you are talking about, but then you are a Dem (BIRM).

You know – Rywall – it seems like you didn’t get your wish in Canada either.
If Sarah had been kerry’s wife (yuk!) no one would have to buy her clothes, she has a billion dollar wardrobe. (Oh, gosh it was her money after all). Hillary took everything out of the White House and has gazillion pant suits and no one asked how much was spent on her wardrobe. Sarah buys her clothes from consignment shops and of course you and the msm and the feminists would have gone crazy about her cheap clothes. She can’t win! She’s a smart, intelligent, hard working woman, married to one man, who hasn’t had an abortion and the feminists hate her for it. Just so you know about obama and the money they are spending, and I’d like to know where all of this is coming from.
BULLETIN: NBC News is reporting that in the first two weeks of October, Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign spent so much money on TV advertising in the key battleground states that their spending averaged out to be $293,000 PER HOUR!
Eh gads!!!

You do realize that of the four (McCain, Obama, Biden & Palin), Palin is the only one who isn’t a millionaire.
BTW, any idea how much those fugly pant suits that Hillary wears cost?
$160k between the two of them? Wow. Filthy rich bastards.
Some GOP employees spend a reported $150k for clothing that she and her family won’t be keeping because the clothes will be donated to charity when this is over and they never told her how much was spent.
Any idea how much those fugly pant suits that Hillary wears cost?
Yeah. She and the GOP deserves to be condemned by the likes of you, Dave. At least they paid for them. Not sure I can say the same about your friends at the DNC.

I saw these same speeches from Tampa, FL today at Kissimmee, FL. Elizabeth Hasselbeck gave her Tampa speech word-for-word. Sarah had a slightly different take on the clothes nonsense, mentioning her favorite consignment store in Anchorage, AK, then continuing on with a very tightly argued speech on the issues.
This was an excited and motivated crowd. It was a welcome change from the whining of some on HA. I realize we can’t all be ManlyRash, but it’s time to buck up and get out the [legal] votes for McCain.

I was talking about the individual incomes of the people involved in the race. McCain’s income is about $380 grand a year. I never said he did not have access to any other money, but McCain signed a prenup and Cindy’s money is not his money.
I am not saying the man lives in poverty. But then again there are all sorts of millionare Democrats out there, Pelosi and Reid to name a couple. If you really want to go down this road, 17 of the top 20 wealthiest people in the Senate are Democrats.

Please provide (1) the location of the homes, (2) the owner of each home, and (3) who uses each home.
I’ll help. Starting with (2), it’s my understanding that McCain owns none of them. Do you know any differently?
Continuing with (1), I’m aware of (a) a DC-area home where he lives while working there; (b) an AZ-area home where Cindy maintains the homestead; (c) the Sedonia ranch; (d) a condo in La Jolla, CA, that Cindy bought and used when rehabbing from a stroke; (e) a Phoenix-area condo that Cindy’s aunt lives in; and (f) another Phoenix-area condo (?) where Cindy and John’s daughter lives.
By my count, I see six. Where’s the seventh? It may exist; I’ve just never seen it reported.
Concluding with (3), McCain uses the DC-area residence, the Phoenix-area residence, and the Sedonia ranch.
Conclusions: First, Cindy McCain is wealthy. Second, Cindy McCain, trusts that she has created, or trusts for her benefit created under her parents’ estate planning documents own six (maybe seven) residential properties. Third, McCain uses only three of the residential properties; and, fourth, as a practical matter, I suspect that McCain can “use” the aunt’s residence and the daughter’s residence only if they invite him over for coffee.
I can’t say whether he’s ever used the CA condo, but I doubt that he has.
So can we logically limit the discussion to three residences? Or should we continue debating the Obama talking points?
And if we’re going to talk about residential properties, when are Obama and Biden going to reveal to the public their secrets for getting significant discounts on home-purchase prices from their sellers? Now, that’s information that I’m confident middle-class voters would like to know.

“Unwashed masses of America trying to make ends meet”–either talking about the filthy rich, or else being a real asshole calling the economically challenged dirty people.
The only critics of Sarah Palin dressing well are elitists who reserve the right to dress well themselves, but repudiate the come-uppance of an outsider wearing their fashion better than they do.
These same asshole critics repudiate the act of charity, donating fine clothes to “unwashed masses of America trying to make ends meet” since no one has the right to wear nice threads except Ivy League inspired elitist snobs.
Get over the fact that someone shopped for some clothes that Palin is wearing first before giving away to a working mother without the means to buy a wardrobe so nice. Republicans are generous contributors to charities.
Whereas, Democrats like Obama take all the pieces of pie and all of the pies for themselves, PROMISING to spread the wealth. Obama’s brother didn’t get any of Obama’s wealth spread. We see how well Stalin spread the wealth. We see how well African Marxist governments spread the wealth. We see how well Castro spread the wealth.

Thanks. But I damned serious about those secrets about discounts on purchase-prices for homes. And I want to know why Obama is making $64,000 gifts to Rezko’s wife and not filing a federal gift tax return to reflect it. Obama’s the guy who wants to preserve the federal estate tax at a top rate of 45%. The federal gift tax and the federal estate tax are part of a unitary transfer-tax system. Taxable gifts made during life affect the amount of estate tax ultimately payable at death.
Obama needs to report the gift.

Yeah, I agree. More broadly, though, the GOP needs to develop a comprehensive media strategy going forward to make sure this kind of crap never happens again. I have never in my adult life seen the media so transparently in the tank for a candidate as I have seen this election cycle. Neither my wife nor I wear ours’ anymore. It does bother me when writing (we’re both left handed) and I have my hands in electrically sensitive equipment on a daily basis, so conductive metal not only gets in the way, but is not safe around the equipment. Rather than risk losing it when setting it down, I’d rather just keep it at home in my dresser and wear it on special occasions (formal outings).
Re: Palin’s clothes, purchased by RNC members.
People are expected to look professional and the job of aides is to take care of matters that the candidates don’t have time to address. I imagine that it a common occurrence for any candidate that doesn’t have the personal means to be provided an appropriate wardrobe for the office. Its perfectly OK with me. As far as John Edwards spending $400 on haircuts; I’m not bent out of shape about that, if he can afford it. I just don’t think its that manly (not a ManlyRash) to be spending so much time on your hair. But, considering Edwards’ lack of faithfulness to Elizabeth, perhaps it isn’t his public appearance his worried about?
Re: Palin as a true “common person”. First, the MSM calls her a naive’ hick from the woods, and then they try to peg her as elitist for the wardrobe that the RNC bought for her to wear at her appearances…kind of like how they make Bush out to be some kind of evil genius that tricked the whole nation with some lie while simultaneously calling him a buffoon that couldn’t think his way out of a paper bag. Liberals are like the Greaes (the Greek mythic figures) that have to share a single eye between them, except that libtards end up sharing a few sparse braincells and often forget which invective they are utilizing on a conservative at the time.
Re: Peggy Noonan; everytime I hear her last name, I think of CaddyShack…noonan….noonan….NOONAN. Anyway, throw that rat (Peggy) overboard and good riddance.
Re: Hasselbeck; I don’t give any weight to what those ultra-liberal morons/entertainers that live in California/NY think and there are hundreds of them. So, why should I give her opinion any weight? Man o’ man, she’s getting better and better every day. This is PRECISELY the cockey Sarah that we all love, and want in this campaign.
Does ANYONE THINK FOR A MINUTE THAT SHE WILL NOT BE OUR NOMINEE IN 2012???
I like Mitt Romney, but gosh darn, he doesn’t hold a candle to Sarah. She’s the BEST REPUBLICAN POLITICIAN OF ALL TIME!!
And Reagan? She’s 10 times better.

Salon just published an interesting article by a GOP operative. He compares polling on black vs. white candidates and concludes that late undecideds break in greater numbers for the white candidate, regardless of the black candidate’s party.

Palin is really trying to win. It’s almost like she’s alone in her battle. She’s the huge draw, she gets Hasselbeck as another celebrity draw, she’s speaking her mind more now. If only she had a couple more months she might do it. I really can’t fault her for anything she’s done. Even the Couric questions were really convoluted. She could have skipped the interview, or treated her with disrespect and basically ignore her stupid questions.
McCain really stood up for her on Meet the Press this morning. He even said she doesn’t need defending, she’s doing great. Her image is tarnished, and I don’t know if she has time to repair it. She’s better qualified to be Prez than Obama is. I don’t know why more people don’t point that out.

Well, I just heard a report that early voting in Georgia is huge, with blacks voting in huge numbers, like 98% of blacks, and 98% of that 98% are voting for Obama. That is huge.

So, he thinks that is the hotest Halloween costume this year? When I first moved to LA, on Halloween, in broad day light, a guy, not unlike Andi Sullivan, decided his costume would be a dildo up his a$$ and secured by a string around his waist. He, of course, was arrested. The strange thing was this idiot could not see what was so offensive with the way he was dressed and acted totally indignant. That guy was Andrew Sullivan.
