Video: Palin talks clothes

posted at 4:58 pm on October 26, 2008 by Allahpundit

Jonathan Martin wonders why she’d broach this subject, thereby keeping it alive for another news cycle. The likely answer, per his colleague: Because she had nothing to do with the RNC clothes purchases and is boiling about what it’s done to her image.

[T]he final straw for Palin and her allies was the news that the campaign had reported spending $150,000 on her clothes, turning her, again, into the butt of late-night humor.

“She never even set foot in these stores,” the senior Republican said, noting Palin hadn’t realized the cost when the clothes were brought to her in her Minnesota hotel room.

“It’s completely out-of-control operatives,” said the close ally outside the campaign. “She has no responsibility for that. It’s incredibly frustrating for us and for her.”

McCain defended her this morning on MTP but doubtless he’d like to change the subject. Maybe tomorrow.

The video I really wanted to give you was of her warning Obama not to pop the champagne just yet — “You kinda get the feeling that the Obama campaign thinks this whole election process is just a formality” — but I can’t find it. If you see it somewhere, I’d be grateful for the tip. In lieu of that, you’ll find Hasselbeck’s intro of Palin today below. Exit quotation: “This is deliberately sexist.”

Mehhh, it was a set. Who cares. It wasn’t that elaborate.

The fact that Palin is cast as as a 6 pack woman and then spends that much on clothes doesn’t sit well with the real 6 pack women out there. It was kind of a dumb thing to do. Take your lumps and it’ll blow over, but damage has been done, whether you think it’s valid or not.

Dave Rywall on October 26, 2008 at 7:06 PM

LOL – yeah, damage. Over five million bucks for a styrofoam Roman playset, and you shrug at it. Palin dresses well and Republicans spend FAR less money on her wardrobe? Why, it’s a scandal!

Hypocritical in the extreme.

While I have no doubt you are acquainted with your share of “6 pack women”, you obviously have no clue about their politics.

And if Obama wins, mass regret, as the truth about the economic crisis is revealed (because that will be everyone who’s thinkin’s full-time job) to be first and foremost a by-product of the idiotic Democrat fair housing policies originating with Jimmy Carter, perpetuated by Bill Clinton and totally supported by Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and the entire Black Caucus, among others. “Community reinvestment”, right.

We should all be the same…poor.

Moxie on October 26, 2008 at 7:20 PM

We will never win a general election by trying to out-stupid the democrats. And that is exactly what Senator (corporate greeeeeeed) McCain has tried to do. Which is why he is going down in flames.

Roger Waters on October 26, 2008 at 6:56 PM

You win general elections by doing two mundane things – secure the base and appeal to voters outside the base. McCain’s appeal to the independents and moderate left was his biggest asset. His appeal to the ‘base’ was limited.

He secured the ‘base’ by picking Palin. Subsequent to that, he should have re-targeted his message to undecided voters, but I think the Palin ‘uproar’ took him off track and put him on the defensive with independents and even moderate Republicans, and he has never pulled out of that.

He stands now in the polls exactly where he was in November of 2007, with lots of ups and downs of course in between, but having made no lasting progress. Obama has gained 6 points.

His biggest mistake since has been his ever deepening focus on issues near and dear to the base, not to the broader electorate. It’s not a good way to win.

Just a personal peeve of mine: too much of what we think we know about how people lived in the past only applies to the “rich and famous,” and a lot of little things now that many consider beyond the pal would have been common place among the commoners.
For instance, women wearing make-up and shaving their legs. Those can’t be more than a few centuries old, but people have gotten it into their heads that they define femininity.

capitalist piglet on October 26, 2008 at 7:15 PM

The truth is that Palin and her family don’t have a lot of money. That means Palin probably buys her suits at lower end stores like Kohl’s or Macy’s or whatnot. But when you are traveling all the time and you’re on TV, you need a suit that: (i) fits properly, (ii) hangs well, and (iii) doesn’t wrinkle up after sitting on a bus or airplane seat for 4 hours. Hence, the need for higher end fashion from Neiman Marcus. Rest assured that the Obamas and Joe Biden buy their clothes from Neiman and retailers like it, too.

The draw of middle class women to Palin is that Palin is “one of them,” but at the same time, is a serious politician who you can trust. So, she connects with “the gals” but is not one of them. The problem is that the media has successfully portrayed her as a right wing kook and has turned EVERY ONE of her positive attributes against her. She didn’t abort Trig = “right wing loon.” She hunts = “whack job that shoots things from a helicopter.” She was in a pageant when she was 16 years old = Tina Fey playing the flute and “pageant walking” in a press conference. The list goes on.

I will never forgive McCain for throwing Palin into that line of fire with no preparation. Palin is one of about 3 true rising stars in the GOP ranks, and she’s now been so irreparably harmed that she won’t be able to run in 2012. It’s absolutely disgusting. That woman should have been going through media training back in July if she was seriously in contention for the VP choice. You don’t just pluck her out of Alaska and throw her to the wolves on 2 days’ notice — and that’s what McCain did to her.

Oh, I don’t know you seemed to think that American women {the same ones who love billionare Oprah and her million dollar wardrobe} are going to be mortally offended by Palin’s wardrobe….not silly stuff like being called obscene names.

I have seen more sexism in this election than I have seen in years in this country. If Palin was a man no one would care how much the suits cost. Obama is absolutely legendary for raising and spending money on himself. If he had spent some of that campaign money on some soup kitchens bottom feeding little hypocrites like you might have room to talk.

No one cares about this issue, except the press. Fraud on the part of the Obama fundraisers is no big deal, Palin’s wardrobe is. Stupid.

Well, if we’re going to discuss something this stupid instead of the fact that we could have unbridled, unchecked welfare spending by the Pelosi/Reid/Frank show, then we should at least update the story:

Palin has already denounced the RNC for not telling her the cost of the clothes when they brought them to her in Minn. hotel room. She’s donated them all to charity and is only wearing clothes from her favorite store in Anchorage from now on.

That’s more than Obama has done with Ayers, Wright (until personally embarrassed), and ACORN. Talk about standing up to your own party!!

Even though McCain was one of my least desirable Rep candidates in the primary, I find myself thinking these days that perhaps God’s omniscient will was done. Without McCain, it is highly unlikely we would have gotten Palin. The immense potential for revitalizing and focusing the conservative movement that Sarah Palin represents is clearly corroborated by the sheer fear and hatred that the left and the MSM are directing towards her.

Dave Rywall on October 26, 2008 at 6:06 PM

I see you’ve gone frothy on us, Dave. I’m very disappointed. I expected better of you. No matter- pray allow me to answer you.

1)So because Palin doesn’t own the clothes it was okay to spend $150,000 on them. Righttttt
You’re stepping into some weird territory here, Dave. See, the Barackopolos cost, what was it, $5.3M and change to build, for a 45 minute speech that was quickly forgotten. That was on top of the money spent by the DNC for the convention. Which, by the way, Dave, I didn’t have a problem with. Perfectly legitimate that the DNC will want to look the best it can for that week. Barry doesn’t own those columns, much a Sarah doesn’t own those clothes. The clothes will have a life after the election- they will have some use. Hell, they might even be able to help fight global warming because they will not induce more wear and tear on Gaia. On the other hand, Dave, styrofoam Greek columns have very limited uses. Someone used a lot of carbon offsets to make those. Perhaps you can find a use for one up there in Canada, Dave?

2)SHE DOES NOT WHERE HER WEDDING RING AT ALL TIMES GOD WOULD NOT APPROVE
Couple of problems with this statement, Dave. Now, I’m going to go full disclosure here, Dave, and tell you I’m an athiest. That said, just who the hell are you to decide what God would and would not approve, Dave? Are you a member of the clergy? Have some sort of special dispensation? Maybe you think you’re Christ’s long-lost 158th cousin? As for the wedding ring, Dave, Sarah described why she had it in her pocket. Oh- and lastly, Dave, you need to post calmly. The word I believe you were looking for was ‘wear’, not ‘where’. Posting in a frothy rage causes idiot mistakes like that.

And yes, the amount the Palins make per year is pretty comfortable most places in the US, and very rich by average world standards. Even though McCain was one of my least desirable Rep candidates in the primary, I find myself thinking these days that perhaps God’s omniscient will was done. Without McCain, it is highly unlikely we would have gotten Palin. The immense potential for revitalizing and focusing the conservative movement that Sarah Palin represents is clearly corroborated by the sheer fear and hatred that the left and the MSM are directing towards her.

neuquenguy on October 26, 2008 at 7:32 PM

I don’t know, she would have done the same things for Rudy as she does for McCain.

I am very surprised by these figures. She is grossly underpaid. Most middle managers in the high-tech industry are in that range, and they are managing 50-200 people not 10,000.

2000—$240,505 (tax int—$38; divs—$0)

2001—$272,759 (tax int—$0; divs—$0)

2002—$259,394 (tax int—$34; divs—$0)

2003—$238,327 (tax int—$0; divs—$0)

2004—$207,647 (tax int—$0; divs—$0)

2005—$1,655,106 (tax int—$13,385; divs—$2,754)

2006—$983,826 (tax int—$4,590; divs—$1,188)

2007—$4,139,965 (tax int—$1,442; tax-ex int—$45,851; divs—$0)

BTW: In 2004, Michelle’s hospital salary was $121,910. Obama was sworn into the U.S. Senate in early 2005, the year in which Michelle’s hospital salary increased to $316,962. And in 2006, Obama directed a $1 million earmark back to Michelle’s hospital. Slam dunk outrageous conflict of interest. Crickets from the media.

And can anyone explain why Obama paid Rezko’s wife $104,500 for a slice of an adjacent lot, which he had appraised at $40,500? What was that $64,000 gift for? And has Obama reported that gift on a federal gift tax return yet?

BuckeyeSam on October 26, 2008 at 7:45 PM

You could combine Palin’s income with Biden’s income and McCain’s income and it would be about 1/4 of Obama’s income. For a guy who hates capitalism he has done all right for himself.

Terrye on October 26, 2008 at 7:39 PM

Moxie on October 26, 2008 at 7:48 PM

<blockquoteUh, no. Not hypocritical. The unwashed masses of America trying to make ends meet will feel a lot less annoyed over Obama buildig a stage for an audience of 70,000+ people than they will for a woman being dressed up to the tune of 150,000$.

This reflects the way Obama does business:

He spent $5,000,000 for just over 70,000 people to see him in person for a few minutes.
The RNC spent $150,000 for way over 1,000,000 people to see her in person for several weeks.

Democrats ALWAYS spend more for less.

jawbone on October 26, 2008 at 7:49 PM

at somewhere around $150 k annually, plus property and interests in businesses. Definitely upper middle income. Quite comfortable.

I don’t know about Alaska. In many parts of the country a family of 7 with that income has to watch their budget pretty closely, that is why I believe it when they say they shop at consignment stores and Walmart.
Why are we discussing this again?

neuquenguy on October 26, 2008 at 7:49 PM

Trouble is that he may come here to do it, since he isn’t man enough to take my bet. Sniveling little troll.

ManlyRash on October 26, 2008 at 7:49 PM

The fact that Palin is cast as as a 6 pack woman and then spends that much on clothes doesn’t sit well with the real 6 pack women out there. It was kind of a dumb thing to do. Take your lumps and it’ll blow over, but damage has been done, whether you think it’s valid or not.

Dave Rywall on October 26, 2008 at 7:06 PM

Has it? Only to the mini-minds. She didn’t spend the money — the RNC did. And we have in comparison a $450.00 lobster meal signed for by Michelle Obama herself. She certainly knew the cost of her food even if she isn’t the ultimate payer — it wasn’t brought to her without a price tag like Sarah Palin’s clothes were.

$450 is easily a month’s worth of food to me and my family, and Michelle Obama eats it in ONE MEAL. That’s incredible.

And don’t tell me that Michelle is going to regurgitate it and sell it for charity as the RNC is required by law to do for Palin’s clothes. It won’t fly even here in California.

unclesmrgol on October 26, 2008 at 7:50 PM

trailboss:

I am talking about what McCain makes, his wife’s money is her money and would be her money whether McCain were in the picture or not.

McCain makes about $380,000 a year and gives more to charity than Obama does who makes $4 million. The guy who gives the least to charity is Biden.

Terrye on October 26, 2008 at 7:50 PM

Wrong again. The people who are really put off by Palin are the elitist conservatives like Frum and Noonan and other self described luminaries. I have been told by people on HA that I am not conservative enough and I really like and respect Palin. She seems genuine to me. It was the pundits who did not like her.

Terrye on October 26, 2008 at 7:41 PM

Nah…I dont know about that. Frum and Noonan were getting pretty slippery during the last couple years of Bush’s presidency and certainly during the primary process. Noonan was saying that Obama was a rational presidential choice way back before Palin was ever thought of.

The real story there is the so called moderates who helped convince the republican party to not elect somebody who will not encompasse the big tent theory. They said John McCain was the guy to bring in independents…like he did in New Hampshire. And then when McCain got the nomination, they fled for Obama. Dont listen to moderates…they dont believe in anything.

The party screwed itself by allowing McCain to screw them. McCain has been screwing conservatives for 15 years. He screwed us in the nomination process, will screw us by being incompetent in the general election, and will go back to the senate in an environment where he will flourish at his favorite pasttime of reaching across the aisle and screwing conservatives. dont blame me…I voted Romney.

Like most political leaders, she doesn’t actually manage the workforce in Alaska, she relies on the dept heads to do that. The DOT director in our state makes about the same $, and has 15,000 employees.

By these standards, of course, the Prez is way underpaid at only 450 k, since he oversees 3 million employees.
