Russell has new ad in PA: “Dear Mr. Murtha”
posted at 10:20 am on October 26, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
William Russell may provide one of the bright points for the GOP in nine days, as his quest to unseat John “King of Pork” Murtha looks less like a long shot and more like a reality. He has a new ad for voters in Murtha’s district, and it’s a winner — even if it pulls one particular punch:
You could also call this a Dear John letter, a missive ending a long relationship. However, I find one omission puzzling. Why not hit Murtha for calling his constituents “racists” and “rednecks”? I suspect those comments would also find their way into a Dear John letter from voters in Murtha’s district, and they may not be as polite as the message Russell created for this ad.
Then again, when breaking up with someone, you don’t necessarily want them to go away mad. You just want them to …go away.
Want to help Murtha go away, mad or otherwise? You know what to do.

Hopefully a followup email ad would mention Murtha calling his constituents racist. It doesn’t have to say it all in one ad. And a series of 2 or 3 would be nice to continue the theme.

I know what to do and I did it.
Go Bill Russell.
dragondrop on October 26, 2008 at 10:31 AM
Talk about getting your message across sweet and simple!
In Cold Blood-refusing to apologize to the US Marines!
And racists,rednecks!
Nice ad,that should smack Murtha right
upside his head!
Let’s hope he feels it!

I hope there is more than one bright spot on election day, but if I have to settle for only one, this would be it!
bopbottle on October 26, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Oops, correction, got ahead of myself, there is no
racist,or redneck content in this video,I apologize!
But speaking of this type of commercial, this would
be a great way to tie Barney,Dodd,Obama with the
FM,FM mortgage scandel!

Oh, there will be many more bright spots on election day than anyone today can imagine. The Democrats have set themselves up for an epic fail.
ManlyRash on October 26, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Nice ad. 999 points of light left to go.

John Murtha has been an embarrassment for my state for quite some time. I really hope that he’s going to be retired after this election. I’d settle for a McCain win since that’s way more important, but I’d like to see both Obama and Murtha lose.
Jill1066 on October 26, 2008 at 10:44 AM
I couldn’t agree more. I sent a Republican (Mel Martinez) an email letting him know he will never get my vote again based on his support of the bailout. There are people across the political spectrum with my view that the desires of the voters have been directly pissed on by congress. I think that bailout has the potential to cost more than one Democrat a seemingly comfortable seat…. I just hope it’s more Democrats than Republicans that bite the dust from that vote.

O/T but I want to sprinkle this everywhere especially in light of Biden’s interview with the FL reporter.
Important distinction that NEEDS to be made over and over again between now and Nov. 4.
When Obama talks about reducing taxes for 95% of working Americans he is only talking about income taxes. He is not talking about payroll taxes which is where the funding for new programs will come from.
The nationalized health care plan the Dems are salivating about is a 7% payroll tax, the new retirement plan to replace our 401k’s is a 5% payroll tax, and the wage insurance is a 1% payroll tax for a total new tax burden of 13%. Add that to the current 6% Social Security payroll tax and the 1% (or more) Medicare payroll tax and we’re looking at a payroll tax burden in excess of 20% which is not subject to the deductions the income tax is.
No one is exempt from payroll taxes so Obama is simply lying.
DerKrieger on October 26, 2008 at 10:53 AM
I’m of just the opposite opinion, CC, and would strongly advise you to change you mind rearding a vote against Martinez. If we are talking about votes based quarely on the bailout, far more Republicans than Democrats will bite the electoral dust, since far more Republicans than Democrats opposed the bailout.
I ask you to consider this: the bailout was an extraordinary circumstance and many Republicans voted for it with grumbles and misgivings. I’m not familiar with Martinez or his voting record. Is he otherwise a good conservative congressman?
If he is, at the very least, not a RINO, then a vote against him is ultimately a vote for his Democrat opponent who, we can be sure, will vote with the Democrat majority.
For what it’s worth.

I can’t wait to see the back of John Murtha’s head. Don’t let the door knob hit you on the way out. What a waste of Military Training. I can’t imagine how much the U.S. Taxpayer’s spent on him, and this is what we get- Those Marines are murdering people, and Rural Pennsylvania is Racist and Redneck. I can’t tell what is wrong with him Alzheimers or some kind of substance abuse. Nobody is this obtuse….
Dr Evil on October 26, 2008 at 11:31 AM
The last “big issue” was immigration/amnesty. He strongly supported it. Again, he was on the opposite side of the fence from his voters. He is another of the “Republicans” that can easily be picked off by a conservative Democrat. It won’t be hard for a Democrat to get to the right of him on many issues.

I’m sure Osama Obama has a place for Murtha in his regime. SecDef, maybe?
Racist, corrupt fools protect their own.
MrScribbler on October 26, 2008 at 11:34 AM
A few questions arise: (1) is he currently being opposed by a truly conservative Democrat or a stealth liberal? (2) if this conservative Democrat gets elected, what assurance is there that he/she will not be strongarmed by Queen Nancy?
ManlyRash on October 26, 2008 at 11:37 AM
He’s not up this round… in the Senate, so Nancy can’t influence him.
As far as “conservative Democrats” go, most are in the House and that is a big part of our future hope to keep Nancy off her knees and Obama’s pants up. (or vice versa?)

Russell needs to get the rights to the opening SNL skit from last night, and just keep that going on a loop in ads.It really makes Murtha look like an a-hole, not that that’s difficult.

Because they already did an ad that called him on the racist remark, the day after he made it. It should be on the campaign site.
rightwingprof on October 26, 2008 at 12:18 PM
The way this presidential election is looking, I’m in desperate need of someone taking one of these liberal pricks down. My hate and dislike for John Murtha is right there with my dislike for this spineless radical egotistic prick…….the ONE!
For the comment this a/o said about “those murdering Marines” this POS should be shot!
try again later on October 26, 2008 at 12:26 PM
It fascinates me how not only the liberal media but also conservatives have excised from Obama’s SF “bitter” comments the part where he basically called non-urban working-class whites racist. We always hear about the clinging to the guns and religion, but it always ends there. Why is that? Murtha didn’t say anything Obama already assumes and is recorded as saying.
Sean68 on October 26, 2008 at 12:26 PM
The last sentence should read: “…anything Obama doesn’t already assume…”
Sean68 on October 26, 2008 at 12:27 PM
Because everyone he would reach already knows about it and are furious! This add is the cherry on top.
csdeven on October 26, 2008 at 12:39 PM
Bill Russell himself just sent me this video. Its a bio background on him.
And if you follow the link I sent you to this post Mr Russell I urge you to pop in and say hi to all your backer here. We expect great things from you.

Keemo on October 26, 2008 at 1:28 PM
That puzzled me as well. Why in the world would you make no mention of racist comments but do mention the bailout??
??????
Hope he doesn’t miss the opportunity that God has given him here.
JellyToast on October 26, 2008 at 2:13 PM
According to the latest polls in PA, Russell leads Murtha 48% to 35%.
ManlyRash on October 26, 2008 at 2:23 PM
Yeah, there’s gonna be more bright spots on Nov 4th.
Tim Family Values Mahoney isn’t gonna make it either. Pimping out your mistress for campaign contributions is just tacky.
Plus if McCain can keep pounding on the socialist/marxist message he can swing nervous undecideds.
Just once I’d like to see and October surprise that damages democrats, like an indictment or something.
Iblis on October 26, 2008 at 2:56 PM
Now if Cindy Sheehan ousts Nancy Peelousy in San Fran that would be an earthquake. Indeed, I’d be willing to put up with Sheehan for two years just to have Nancy out of the Speaker’s box and Murtha following her.
I too think the voter in the ad should have combined the racist and redneck quotes as well, why waste money on a series of ads when one would do quite nicely.

Sent a check on Thursday!
Gothguy on October 26, 2008 at 4:32 PM
Ed, everyone in PA knows what Murtha said about racists and rednecks. It just doesn’t bear repeating in an ad by his opponent.
It’s called the high road…
CliffHanger on October 26, 2008 at 5:52 PM
If all else goes to hell in this election, I hope at least Murtha loses his job…
justdianne on October 26, 2008 at 8:51 PM
This is the only donation I’ll be making this year, and I don’t live anywhere near PA.
You don’t stab our Marines in the back like that.
TallDave on October 26, 2008 at 9:57 PM
I’ve donated to Russell several times this year and i live in Texas! If nothing else comes from this election than the ouster of Murtha, I will be happy to see Murtha handed his hat! Why anyone in PA would think this larda$$ deserves another term is beyond me. He has had many terms to “make it right” with Pennsylvanians, but now he is so convinced he is invincible – just like BHO! Good riddance to bad rubbish! Hope PA thanks TX for our part in doing for them what they should have done years ago!
Neocon Peg on October 26, 2008 at 10:27 PM
Good news. I was driving around in Washington County, Pennsylvanis yesterday and I saw more Russell lawn signs than Murtha lawn signs. In fact, I only saw ONE house displaying Murtha lawn signs. Know what Murtha’s lawn signs say? “Murtha…He Delivers For Us!” Too bad they left off the “oink-oink”.
jay12 on October 27, 2008 at 8:30 AM
If Murtha is re-elected after calling western Pennsylvania racist rednecks, then they will prove he was right.
