Todd: The attacker fondled me, too; Update: Todd confesses to making up story, say police; Update: Todd “upset” with the media for hyping the story; Update: “She hasn’t really shown any obvious remorse”

She forgot to mention that to cops during the initial report, just like she forgot to mention the detail about him spotting the McCain bumper sticker on her car. It happens; victims of violent crime forget details initially.

But the nuance is mounting.

Speaking to Channel 4 Action News on Friday, [police spokesman Diane] Richard said they’re still questioning Todd because of some new developments.

“We have learned that the victim’s statement has a few inconsistencies in it and her statement has changed,” said Richard

Richard said Todd now says she isn’t sure if it was a bumper sticker on her car or a campaign button on her jacket that angered the attacker. Richard said Todd added new details to the attack, saying at one point she lost consciousness.

“She also indicated she was sexually assaulted as well. She indicated that when he had her on the ground he put his hand up her blouse and started fondling her. But other than that, she says she doesn’t remember anything else. So we’re adding a sexual assault to this as well,” Richard said.

They gave her a polygraph but haven’t released the results. Here’s a photo of the ATM station; cops say the camera doesn’t show anything, but that might be because the attack happened out of frame. No word on whether it at least shows her using the machine to place her at the scene.

People who work at nearby businesses claim they didn’t hear anything. I assumed from the first reports that the ATM was enclosed in the foyer of a bank (the way mine is) but this appears to be open onto the street, so passersby would have a clear view.

She also says, contra Ace’s theory, that the guy was sitting on her chest when he carved the “B,” not standing over her upside down:

Ms. Todd told police during at least five hours of questioning last night that her attacker said to her, “You are going to be a Barack supporter.” She told police the man then sat on her chest, pinning both her hands down with his knees and used what she believed was a dull knife with a roughly 5-inch blade to carve the B.

Ms. Todd then went to a friend’s house in the 5100 block of Cypress Street, about a mile away, where she reported the incident to police about 45 minutes later. She declined medical treatment at that time.

Like Ace says, maybe she took the photo herself in the mirror. If the latter, that would make the “B” facing the right way on her left cheek, which would be the likeliest place for a right-handed assailant to cut her (assuming, probability-wise, that he is right-handed). Exit question one: Why not release the details of the polygraph? If she passed it, it’s mighty irresponsible to suppress that information while whispering to the press about “inconsistencies” in her story. Exit question two: If other businesses were open nearby, why didn’t she go in and ask for immediate help?

Update: The boss’s skepticism was justified: Police tell KDKA it’s a hoax. Disgraceful.

Police sources tell KDKA that a campaign worker has now confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter “B” in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker…

Investigators did say that they received photos from the ATM machine and “the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction.”

This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.

The commander added that Todd will face charges; but police have not commented on what those charges will be.

Update (Ed): The College Republicans will have some explaining to do here.  And let’s remember that even if the story had been true, it still didn’t say anything about Obama and the people who support him.

Update: Fox News VP John Moody set up the left’s talking points for them perfectly last night: “If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.”

Update: No word yet about the black eye, but the “B” is her own doing, unsurprisingly.

A McCain-Palin campaign volunteer who claimed she was robbed and cut by a supporter of Sen. Barack Obama has confessed to making up the story, police sources told the Tribune-Review.

Ashley Todd, 20, of College Station, Texas, is expected to be charged with filing a false police report and may face additional charges, investigators said. She told detectives she etched a backward letter “B” onto her right cheek and then manufactured a story about being attacked at a Bloomfield ATM by a black man who was enranged by her John McCain bumper sticker.

Detectives are continuing to question Todd at police headquarters. They are expected to release additional information later this afternoon.

If it’s her right cheek, then the photo wasn’t taken in a mirror and she really did etch it backwards, like the moron that she is.

Update: Here’s one possible explanation for how she got the black eye: She may not really have a black eye. Quote: “The photo also shows Todd with a black eye. Salon showed it to Jennifer Province, an emergency room nurse, who says she believes the black eye was faked. The color of it is wrong, Province said, and there’s less swelling than typically seen.”

How does one “fake” a black eye, exactly? Did she actually put make up around her eye and expect the cops to be fooled?

Update: KDKA updates to say that cops believe the “injuries” were self-inflicted. Whether that’s a reference to the “B” or to something more, like her giving herself a black eye, I don’t know yet.

Update: Surprise — she told cops she’s had mental health problems in the past.

Update: I’ve received the following statement from Ethan Eilon, executive director of the College Republicans:

“When Ms. Todd initially contacted us claiming to have been attacked our first reaction was obviously to be concerned for her safety.  We are as upset as anyone to learn of her deceit, Ashley must take full responsibility for her actions.” – Ashley Barbera, Communications Director

“We have terminated her effective today. Obviously, we had know idea she was making this story up.” – Ethan Eilon

Update: She simply must be joking.

“She just opened up and said she wanted to tell the truth,” Bryant said. “She was upset with the media for blowing this into a political firestorm.”

She told Detectives J.R. Smith and Scott Evans varying stories about how she ended up with two black eyes and a backward letter “B” etched onto her right cheek late Wednesday. She said she remembers being in her car, driving around the city, and seeing the letter on her cheek when she looked into the rearview mirror. She said she immediately thought of Barack Obama when she saw the “B,” Bryant said.

“She said she doesn’t remember doing it but knows it must have been her who did it,” Bryant said.

Update: Inflaming race relations, sandbagging the candidate she claims to support, sending the cops on a wild goose chase — and no remorse, of course.

“She hasn’t really shown any obvious remorse,” Kraus said. “She’s certainly surprised that it snowballed to where it is today.”

“It’s been a huge waste of time and man hours,” said Bryant, adding that police had been working on the story since it broke Thursday…

A woman named Liz who answered the door at the residence where Todd arrived after her purported attack told FOXNews.com that her roommate is friends with Todd, and he told Liz not to discuss any details about the incident. A Ford Taurus with a Texas license plate and a McCain-Palin sticker was parked outside.

Fox notes that she’s staying with a “male friend” in the area. I’m still wondering about that black eye.

Update: KDKA has perp-walk video. I looked closely to try to see if her eye’s still black, which would at least prove that it’s a real injury, but I can’t tell for sure. If it is, it’s healed an awful lot already.

Maybe. I’m just judging it from my husband, who is a little over six feet and weighs about 185 when fit. I would think adding 15 pounds and two or three inches would make him about the same.

Esthier on October 24, 2008 at 3:44 PM

My BF is 6′4 (6′2 maybe) 250.. not fat, doesn’t even have love handles.. You bring him to 200 and he looks like a stick.

Esthier, I’m only saying anything that reminds people that lingering racism still exists in the U.S. will likely make them a little more forgiving of Murtha’s over-the-top generalization of an entire region in PA.

starfleet_dude on October 24, 2008 at 3:51 PM

OK, I was wrong.

I guess I am stuck back in time 5 years ago, when the media would check their story before running it.

indythinker on October 24, 2008 at 3:51 PM

This girl needs medicine.

Hoodlumman on October 24, 2008 at 3:52 PM

Oh, and it got major play in the western PA media also, to say the least.

starfleet_dude on October 24, 2008 at 3:48 PM

If true, it was newsworthy. I’m sure it’ll get plenty of play there now as well.

I just don’t think the actions of an Aggie have any bearing on that state.

Esthier on October 24, 2008 at 3:53 PM

And every day. They’re who we make fun of in Texas for their idiocy the way most tell dumb blond jokes.

Esthier on October 24, 2008 at 3:46 PM

Yeah I know. I put some joke on here a couple of years ago and an Aggie who’s an HA commenter pounced on me hard. Which is pretty funny considering I have a bunch of Aggie cousins and one of my stepsons is an Aggie. And since I know plenty of ‘em, I can honestly say they have pretty thin skins about it!

RushBaby on October 24, 2008 at 3:53 PM

Ah, yes! Do you have a problem with that?

Dale in Atlanta on October 24, 2008 at 3:45 PM

I’m not sure beating 20 year old women because you are angry at them is in your job description, is it? Perhaps you think it is.

Maybe you’re right, but I sincerely hope not as I don’t see how that would be fair to the people he slandered.

Right. She’s from College Station TX. Poor Aggies must be cringing today.

Something tells me the press will pay more attention to this then they have liberals who’ve made up claims of abused and harassment in the past.

Is this incident racism, or political extremism?

Nonfactor on October 24, 2008 at 3:58 PM

This whole thing sounds fishy. Reminds me of the Obama camp trying to make everyone believe there would be an assassination attempt. Maybe this girl is really an Obama supporter who was paid to make the story up so the Obama media could do the faux outrage thing. Anything has become possible in this campaign, but this type of behavior is really more typical of the left.

They are still paying attention to Palin’s clothes

White people used to go on lynching parties after hearing stories like this. I can safely say I do not feel sorry for her; I may have at first, but racist lies like hers must be pointed out and lambasted in hopes that somebody else doesn’t do the same thing.

Did she just have to say her ‘assailant’ was black?

Leave out that one detail and its a soon-dead story. Make it racial – with a black man running for President – and the press eats it up.

I realize she’s mentally ill … but c’mon. Did her imaginary attacker just have to be black? Couldn’t he have been Japanese or something, just to be different?

Sheesh.

Wow, Tom, and earlier in this thread I wanted to give you credit for being civil. It didn’t take you long to go back to being a dick.

Esthier on October 24, 2008 at 4:23 PM

Drudge over-hyped it and right-wing blogs ran with it.

Tom_Shipley on October 24, 2008 at 4:22 PM

And that had nothing to do with race. This would have been the same story if it was Kerry running and if the “robber” had been described as white.

A woman’s face being carved because of politics would be a story no matter what.

Esthier on October 24, 2008 at 4:26 PM

I’m not trying to be a dick. But “the press” didn’t fuel the story. Drudge and right-wing blogs did. It’s just a fact. I was merely correcting the record.

Tom_Shipley on October 24, 2008 at 4:26 PM

By Moody’s rationale, Senator Obama’s quest for the presidency should have been over long ago when he painted the Clintons as secret cross-burners.

Ryan Gandy on October 24, 2008 at 4:28 PM

OK, I was wrong also, but to attack her before the full facts come out, is wrong.

Some things that never got mentioned, and maybe in light of what she did or did not do, is interesting. One video she posted had her making comments about a janitor (who was black, maybe 6′4 200 pounds, yes, he is in the video) that he was mean, or something to that effect. It was from September I believe.

The whole thing is weird. When did she leave the phone bank, or was she even at a phone bank?

Did she have any cuts or bruises while there?

She posted about trying to debate her way out of a speeding ticket coming up, did she do this to get out of the ticket?

Did she need money so figuring if she claimed she was robbed for $60.00, people would give her money. From there the story took off? Go to the friends house, say you were robbed, they get panicky, who was it, what did they look like? You have to report this.

I dont know, if it was fishy to those yesterday, then it is still fishy today.

The hate that was directed her way, before the facts came out, were not justified, though they may have been ultimately proved correct.

Again, Ashley Todd has some kind of history of either being victim of sexual abuse, or claiming sexual abuse. Rabbitdb8tr, aka Ashley Lynn Todd, posted here on the introductions page of a rape victim support forum board in Dec 2006 and said this (her only post there):

“Hi.

Esthier on October 24, 2008 at 4:43 PM

So convenient for the press to get their material from blogs these days isn’t it? I wonder where their curiosity and initiative went.

Now, this is funny. Take a look at all the posts on Hot Air. You know those things they call “links”? Well, I’d guess that 90% of the stuff that Ed and Allah post is fueled by what people in these parts call the “MSM.”

Even this story was fueled by a local Pennsylvania paper, which is appropriate. It was a small local story. The MSM sat back and waited for more facts of the story to come to light before reporting on it as well. Drudge and the blogs grabbed the few early, sketchy facts and started drawing conclusions about Obama supporters and the entire presidential race in general.

This is a perfect example of the value of the prudence of the MSM vs. the reactionary nature of both blogs and Drudge.

But, back to my original point. The blogs don’t fuel the MSM. The MSM fuels blogs. There are some stories that get national attention because of buzz from the blogs, but more often than not, they are cases like this where “real” news organizations put out a report and blogs make a big deal out of it until the national media decides to pick it up as well.

Drudge and the blogs grabbed the few early, sketchy facts and started drawing conclusions about Obama supporters and the entire presidential race in general.

I should mention that Ed had the right angle on this story from the beginning. He didn’t fall into the trap of trying extrapolate a small, seemingly isolated incident into greater “truth” about a group of individuals.

Also, the AIM instant messaging handle listed on the rape victim support board profile is “rabbitdebater”. That AIM handle is crosslinked to her other web pages and accounts. It is her.

SarahW on October 24, 2008 at 4:54 PM

I am sorry to hear about this. I knew from the beginning that it could be a hoax, but I wanted to give this young woman the benefit of the doubt. After all, if it had turned out to be true initial attacks on her would have been unfair.

She obviously has some real problems if she would do this to herself and it is probably true that the whole thing got too big.

The worse thing about this is that it will make it that much more difficult for real victims of crime to come forward and be believed. In fact it is because of stuff like this that some people just don’t make reports or call the cops at all.

Too bad. I hate to think she did this to herself and to the people who supported her.

Tom_Shipley on October 24, 2008 at 4:26 PM

Drudge did overdo it, blogs didn’t. Read Malkin, she called it before the police did.

hawkdriver on October 24, 2008 at 5:09 PM

I thought the blogs were split and pretty skeptical.

This is true. Many really didn’t play up this story to score political points… most of that came from the comment sections, which also seemed pretty split.

As far as the wardrobe story goes… that’s received more play than it deserved. Troopergate is a legit story, especially in light of the fact that she was found to have abused her power in the case.

I never claimed the MSM was perfect, as is evident by the coverage of the Duke lacrosse case.

If someone’s already said it, sorry but I hope you understand most people would still appreciate the things you related yesterday. Thank’s for the insights.

hawkdriver on October 24, 2008 at 5:18 PM

So is the media flogging this story now or not?

You’ll probably see the cable news pick up the story now that all the facts are out and it has turned out to be a hoax. I doubt you’ll see newspapers pick it up, and if they do it won’t be a big story.

But I don’t think the story will have much legs. It’ll probably be dead by tomorrow.

Yea the MUTLILATION thing really hyped this beyond belief. I thought she was the new Black Dahlia or something judging by Drudges ridiculous headline.

Cardiganfox on October 24, 2008 at 5:20 PM

This would be remembered as a laughable annoyance if she hadn’t tried to ignite fear of “big black males”. What a despicable piece of trash.

Tom_Shipley on October 24, 2008 at 5:17 PM

Except that the result was mixed, which to many seems like what you’d get from people who aren’t so happy with your reforms.

Esthier on October 24, 2008 at 5:26 PM

I’m still wondering about that black eye.

Honestly, I still think it’s legitimate. If it were me, and I wanted to give myself a black eye, I’d go all out. The second one is barely touched at all and just doesn’t make any sense.

Esthier on October 24, 2008 at 5:29 PM

Well, I suppose we’re close in our understanding to this story and the media except that the ethics panel was Democrats and if that’s a story then so is Obama out and out lying to Rick Warren about his record on The Born Alive Infancy Protection Act. Joe Biden not knowing which Article of the Constitution dictates the duties of the VP. Tony Rezco, would be an appropriately similar story. I could go on but it just get frustrating repeating it.

The good story today is a 16 percent drop in share wealth at NYTs and it literally falling into the Junk Stock category. (I think I’d like to buy up shares until I had a majority control in stock and then I’d do editorials every day on the virtues of religious lifestyles and homeschooling)

I’d keep the crossword.

And igniting fear of racism is much better?

Honestly I think she just went with an easy target, and other reports say that a similar description was recently on the news in relation to another story about theft.

Esthier on October 24, 2008 at 5:31 PM

Toldja that eye didn’t fly.

How’d she do it? Let me count the ways…there’s Maybeline, Shiseido, Revlon…

We know that the cut is real but self inflicted and have no proof that the black eyes are not real.

If she’s willing to cut herself, then she’s likely willing to step into a door knob.

Thank you for being so kind. I appreciate it.

I still feel sorry for this girl. I always knew it might be a hoax, but that does not mean that nothing is wrong here. Either that girl was attacked, or she literally beat herself up. Either way, she is in trouble.

Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 5:35 PM

sanguine:

I am not sure that is makeup on her eye. The police would not have needed to suggest a lie detector test if all she had on her face was makeup. I bet she hurt herself. After all, if she would cut her face, I suppose she would run into a wall.

This reminds me of the girl in Wisconsin a few years ago who went missing from a Dorm or something. Her folks came in from out of the area, all sorts of people were looking for her and she was found 3 or 4 days later in a nearby park. She had obviusly been outside for days. She claimed to have been kidnapped and held but eventually it was discovered that she just sort of freaked out and went out in the woods and hid. She got in trouble for it too.

Yep.

And not just because it’s embarrassing for us, but really for her, I wish they’d quietly do what they need to to help her and punish her appropriately without piling on like people do. She is either a very stupid young lady or does have some mental problems.

hawkdriver on October 24, 2008 at 5:39 PM

hawkdriver:

Yes, we will get over it a long time before she and her family do.

Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 5:41 PM

Anyone suspect that she was a Team Barry plant in a McCain office or this that too tinfoil hat-ish?

Jussayin’.

For the post-racial candidate that drops race whenever he can, I would not be surprised if higher ups in Team Barry recruited operatives to go to McCain offices for “recon” or special ops.

If they did, I’d give it to them for us not vetting her, but I really think that’s a stretch. If they were way behind, maybe. But they’re in the driver seat and that would be stupid to blow a lead on a lie. I think this girl may be stupid and really thought this would garner some attention to the thuggery that is taking place, without thinking how badly it would hurt credibility or, she’s sick.

At least our conspiracy theories are based on facts not fiction.

Kini on October 24, 2008 at 5:56 PM

I don’t think this is a conspiracy or anything. This girl is just messed up.

As for conspiracies, conservatives are rank amateurs compared to the left. The only people on the right who can come close are the Paulbots. But they have gone so far right, they are bumping up to left.

Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 5:59 PM

I was just reading about this story on Breitbart and I see from comments on Breitbart’s video link that an Obama Leftist is ridiculing everyone else, including writing that Hot Air is “home of” Obama campaigners (forgot actual words, basically wrote there that this site is “pro” Obama as to who comments here, which is obviously not true).

Anyway, what I think from this story and the open-commenting now on Hot Air (or new “arrivees” here in commenters) is that the story — “B” lady — could possibly be an Obama campaigner, the story an effort to compromise media that’s NOT Obama-aligned…

In other words, counter intelligence operation.

Meanwhile, ACORN’s immense fruad (in other words, lies), Ayers’ immense crime, Obama’s many documented lies…the media? Ignoring all of that, focusing instead on McCain’s shoes, Palin’s work warddrobe and lying activists out to impune what remaining Moderate/non-Obama media remains.

S on October 24, 2008 at 6:11 PM

For the record, I’d also like to say that all the crud Spamming that afflicts my own website is all pro-Obama and mostly all of that pro-homosexual or otherwise homosexual-aligned. It all ridicules my site from one aspect or another, all of it ridiculous.

I’m just saying that, in my experience, the Obama campaign is wretched as to the behaviors that are emanating from that campaign, by the “Obama aligned” or promoting people. They seem keen on generating just about any and all kinds of negativity as to “mob reactions” as ever I’ve witnessed, whether it be about race, ethnicity and/or sexual behavior.

Which is undoubtedly what can be expected in any future time that would find us suffering an Obama Presidency. Fascism, folks, is here again.

Nonfactor on October 24, 2008 at 5:46 PM

But people don’t believe in wild, unlikely conspiracies because they are liberals or conservatives. A lot of people suffer from a profound discontent with and alienation from the world. They are dissatisfied with the world as it is so they invent a “trick” or “conspiracy” to explain it. Usually a group–Jews, liberals, conservatives–are assigned the blame and become the symbol for everything that is wrong with the state of things in the person’s mind.

aengus on October 24, 2008 at 6:15 PM

What’s really unfortunate about this incident is that if she were an Obama campaign worker and had claimed someone assaulted her and carved an M or P on her cheek, her story wouldn’t have been checked out at all, and if it had and been proved to be a hoax, no liberal would have cared. Just because her story was a hoax, that doesn’t mean no evil conservative has never done it to someone else somewhere else. Don’t you know.
