Palin channels … Namath?

Sarah Palin reached all the way back to Super Bowl III and channeled Joe Namath in his hometown in guaranteeing a win in Pennsylvania on November 4th.  The odds against the McCain-Palin ticket don’t look nearly as high as when Broadway Joe guaranteed a win against the Baltimore Colts in 1969, and perhaps Palin has some inside dope on how the Keystone State may turn in two weeks:

Near the hometown of Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath, Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin guaranteed a come-from-behind victory for the McCain-Palin ticket in Pennsylvania. …

“Now, Joe Namath is probably a little bit before your time,” Palin said to the high school students in the crowd. “But do you remember, though, in the biggest game of his life, all the experts had Joe Namath and the Jets written off to defeat? They were up against the elite team that had all the money, and they were held in awe by the media. And Broadway Joe replied, ‘we’re gonna win the game, I guarantee it.’ And they won.

“And I hope Joe won’t mind if I paraphrase him some in this state, his home state, Pennsylvania, with your help, we’re going to win this state. I guarantee it,” Palin said to wild applause.

Public polling has Barack Obama leading outside of the margin of error, but a number of media reports now say that both campaigns see Pennsylvania as a toss-up.  The fallout from Joe the Plumber may be just one reason, a large reason but perhaps not the most important one.  The polling in John Murtha’s district has reversed after his comments about Pennsylvanians being racists, which has happened just over the last few days.  Murtha may lose a seat considered as safe as any for the Democrats as a result.

Could this also have affected the presidential race?  It’s possible, and given Palin’s guarantee, perhaps internal polling already shows this.

If McCain wins Pennsylvania, that puts Obama in a bad position even if he wins Virginia.  That’s a net loss in the swap of eight electoral votes.  It also would mean no hope of winning Ohio, and that cuts into Obama’s strategies for winning the race considerably.

Let’s hope Palin and McCain can channel Broadway Joe all the way to the end zone on November 4th.

Palin channels Broadway Joe to defeat Jolted Joe.

Now that I think of it, with Gaffing Joe Biden as VP, I think an appropriate addition would be John Murtha as BHO’s Secretary of State

If this happens, I’d like Palin to run around wagging her finger in the year like Joe.

I predict McCain wins every state except Vermont and Idaho. InTrade has that bet at .00000013%, so if I’m right I stand to make a hefty profit on my 100 bucks.

The inside numbers don’t show what the media would have us believe, and you have to admit that Mac/Palin have seemed pretty upbeat and positive about the election result.

Contrast that to the increasing paranoia, flailing racism accusations and the quiet setting of the table for explaining why Obambo lost the election.

Both Murtha & B. Hussein Obama call them racists…how could PA support those race-baiters?

jgapinoy on October 24, 2008 at 10:01 AM

As long as Biden keeps fumbling the ball near the endzone, we have a good chance of running one back for a TD.

journeyscarab on October 24, 2008 at 10:01 AM

What does she have to lose by guaranteeing a win? Nothing. She’s trying to scare them into making more dumb, panicked statements.

What poetic justice, if Murtha brought down Obama.

BuckeyeSam on October 24, 2008 at 10:03 AM

Bottom line: Sarah Palin is a leader. A skilled, talented, natural leader, who understands exactly how to inspire or motivate.

McCain has a great many talents – but that sort of Reaganesque quality is not one of them.

Palin has it in spades. So did Joe Namath, for the record. It’s a pretty apt metaphor.

Whether she is the future of the party and the nation remains to be seen …. but what I know without doubt is that people like her, with that sort of drive and ambition and courage – and the ability to voice it – are exactly the kind of people we need.

I think the pundits are going to be displeased, because I think McCain will win states that no one expects. The bias of the media, Obama’s socialism, gaffetastic Biden, Joe the Plumber, national security, and especially PALIN are going to be the factors for McCain’s win.

Not quite his home town, Ed. Beaver isn’t Beaver Falls.
Still, point is well-taken.
What everyone is missing is that there is a bunch of down-ticket noise in Pa. besides Jack A$$ Murtha.
1 – 11th Congress – Incumbent Dem Paul Kanjorski is in deep trouble, in part because of earmarks to his sons’ now-defunct company, and is a good bet to lose a long-time Dem seat (this is Dan Flood’s old district. For those who don’t remember him, the Wikipedia article is pretty good). Lou Barletta, the anti-illegal immigration mayor of Hazleton, has got a real shot.
2 – “Bonusgate” – This is a big deal in western Pa. Go here for a good take on it. It’s all powerful Pa. House Dems whose districts include both Murtha’s and the 4th, which Dem Jason Altmire (who has ties to some of those who’ve been indicted) took from GOP Melissa Hart in the ‘06 avalanche. Hart’s trying for a comeback and has a legitimate chance.
In addition, Gov. Fat/Fast Eddie Rendell has been too busy doing his post-game commentary after Eagles games to really work Obama. He was a Hillary kind of guy all the way and really hasn’t done his best work for the Most Holey One. And the most powerful local black Dem, Philly mayor Michael Nutball… er, Nutter… was also a Hillary guy and has been only perfunctory in his support of the false Messiah.
Bottom line: Pa. is very winnable for McPalin. Don’t take ubiquitous Pa. pollster G. Whiz Terry Madonna’s word for it — he’s a Dem hack. From his bio at the Franklin & Marshall web site:

He served in the early 1970’s as a Lancaster County Commissioner.

In most Pa. counties, there are three commissioners that serve as the executive/legislative board. By law, only two can come from one party. Madonna was the Democrat. Remember that when you look at his stuff.

OT: Palin is supposed to release medical records today. Quite honestly, as a male, I simply do not require reports from any of her OB-GYN docs. A “she’s fine downstairs” letter is fine for me. But I don’t understand how Obama, a smoker and (more important) the son of two people who died early in life, is able to get away with a one-page letter from a doctor saying he’s fit.

Where the hell is The NYT on that? Bunch of liberal losers.

Beats me. I just know it, that’s all. Trying to think otherwise would be like trying to imagine the sun not rising tomorrow. It’s an interesting exercise in speculation, but pointless, becuase I know the sun will rise tomorrow, just as I know McCain will win. It’s no more complicated than that.

Both teams are coached by very fine men: Tressel and Paterno. PSU should be able to handle OSU, but OSU snuck its freshman QB out of PA.

My dad retired at 63 in 1993 with a profit-sharing plan balance of 1.3M. Since 1995, he’s been yanking out about $100K to $175K a year, and the fricking thing was about about $4 million before the drop. Retirees, more so than any other group, should be the ones to have faith in the U.S. economy. Are they really stupid enough to vote in a guy who will go along with Dems in Congress and drop longstanding retirement savings vehicles in favor of a nonsense government pension?

Given that Obama’s money is buried in tax-exempt bonds (check his 2007 return), it’s easy to understand how Obama has no faith in capitalism and markets.

The more people learn about the Dems scheme for 401k plans the more they will reconsider a Dem vote.

WSJ: If you have a 401(k) or equivalent retirement plan, you’ve probably been watching nervously the past few weeks as your nest egg has shrunken owing to the current turmoil in the markets.
Well, it could be worse. But don’t take heart, for what we mean is it could get worse. The market turmoil has some politicians on Capitol Hill eyeing the end of the 401(k) as we know it. Workforce Management reports on a hearing of the House Education and Labor Committee earlier this month:
A plan by Teresa Ghilarducci, professor of economic-policy analysis at the New School for Social Research in New York, contains elements that are being considered. . . .
Under Ghilarducci’s plan, all workers would receive a $600 annual inflation-adjusted subsidy from the U.S. government but would be required to invest 5 percent of their pay into a guaranteed retirement account administered by the Social Security Administration. The money in turn would be invested in special government bonds that would pay 3 percent a year, adjusted for inflation.
The current system of providing tax breaks on 401(k) contributions and earnings would be eliminated.
“I want to stop the federal subsidy of 401(k)s,” Ghilarducci said in an interview. “401(k)s can continue to exist, but they won’t have the benefit of the subsidy of the tax break.”
Ghilarducci outlined her plan last year in a paper for the left-liberal Economic Policy Institute, in which she acknowledges that her plan would amount to a tax increase on workers making more than $75,000–considerably less than the $250,000 Barack Obama has said would be his tax-hike cutoff. In addition, workers would be able to pass on only half of their account balances to their heirs; presumably the government would seize the remaining half. (Under current law, 401(k) balances are fully heritable, although they are subject to the income tax.)
Sounds pretty unappealing, doesn’t it? But in her congressional testimony, Ghilarducci offered a sweetener:
Short-term I propose . . . that the Congress allow workers to swap out their 401(k) assets, perhaps at August levels, for a guaranteed retirement account–just a one-time swap. . . .
How would this work? You go back to your districts and meet up with a 55-year-old who had had $50,000 in his account last month and now has $40,000 in the account. He can swap out that $50,000, valued in August, for that guarantee of what would become, if he retires at 62, a $500 a month addition to Social Security.
A 55-year-old who lost 20% of his 401(k) because of the recent stock market decline was investing more aggressively than he should have, given his age. Ghilarducci proposes to reward this imprudence in exchange for dramatically limiting everyone’s ability to take risks (and enjoy the corresponding rewards) and for greatly increasing government control of Americans’ retirement funds.
It is by no means a certainty that Congress or a President Obama would embrace such a proposal, but this is a direction in which things may move if the Democrats make big gains next month.

There has to be such a big lead for McCain in Pennsylvania that even all the fraudulent votes in Philly can’t overcome it. That’s how Daschle lost his seat in South Dakota — there were so many votes the Democrats knew they couldn’t manufacture enough believable votes from the Indian reservations, so they gave up.

Here in Colorado I had my training to be a poll watcher. The room was packed with volunteers, totally packed, and this is in Boulder County which is so liberal you can get high just taking the city bus. The turnout on the Republican side is going to be huge.

I predict the tolling of the bell marking the end of Obama will be when Maine goes for McCain on election night.

Jets fans, all living in Shingle Springs, Ca at the time—-who’d a thunk it. I was giving 10-1 odds. Hell, they didn’t even hardly use point spreads back then. I still remember Emmerson Boozer just killin’ the Colts line.

Rovin on October 24, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Man…10-1 odds? And $160 I’m sure was a lot of money back then…especially for a kid in high school!

Something tells me you never made a bet like that again…Anyway, I bet on football, do pretty well, but I never ever bet on a Jets game. Bad karma.

Elway’s on the stump endorsing McCain in COLORADO!!

THIS IS GOOD NEWS!

You’re right on there JB. Probably saved me thousands in not bettin over the years. Still like to bet, but usually small stuff like old Raider’s jock straps, (old Stabler to Belitnikoff fan)

Don’t feel bad Rovin. This smart guy took the Vikings three times.

I felt so sorry for Tark. He deserved a ring. Certainly one of the finest QB’s ever in the game.

LOL. Yep! Nobody, but nobody, could jump around like a cat on a hot tin roof and throw a tumbling brick 60 yards like Tarkington. The man was a fighter.

I think the market is going to close up today and begin to rally…got some of that Manlyrash optimism working…

Seems to me that 8000 is the bottom.

joepub on October 24, 2008 at 10:39 AM

I hope you’re right about the bottom.

But, I’d expect Wall Street to be holding its collective breath for now. No huge movements in the next two weeks.

When they find out whether next year’s Capital Gains tax is going to be going way up or perhaps going down (i.e. when they find out who wins the Presidency) THEN there will be a big move, one way or the other.

ClintACK on October 24, 2008 at 12:46 PM

I don’t believe McCain would pull a Gore. He’ll take the same route Nixon took over the Chicago vote in 1960.
