Media spins innocent Lieberman quote to humiliate Palin

posted at 8:05 pm on October 24, 2008 by Allahpundit

I was going to let it go when Politico did it but now NBC’s done it too, so let’s take a moment. The new narrative about fingerpointing within Team Maverick is starting to congeal and naturally Palin, given her unfavorables, is expected to be Scapegoat #1. Hence the media interest today in Tom Ridge hinting McCain would win Pennsylvania if he was VP, which is arguably true but overlooks the minor detail of how those red states McCain desperately needs to hold would have reacted to a pro-choice VP. Here’s the latest obvious attempt to advance the ball, distorting an innocent line by the guy who was reportedly passed over for the ‘Cuda to make it sound like he thinks she’s not ready:

U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman Friday continued to stand by Republican John McCain’s selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a running mate.

But when asked by The Advocate if Palin is ready to be president from day one, Lieberman said “thank God she’s not going to have to be president from day one. McCain’s going to be alive and well.”

Do I actually need to explain this? The prospect is raised of a close friend dying and he says, essentially, “thank god he’s not dead,” and the media’s reading it as “thank god that halfwit on the bottom of the ticket won’t be in charge.” Read down a bit further in the interview, though, and you’ll find this:

“Let’s hope she never has to be ready because we hope McCain is elected and live out his term,” Lieberman said. “But if, God forbid, an accident occurs or something of that kind, she’ll be ready. She’s had executive experience. She’s smart. And she will have had on-the-job training.”

Are people seriously suggesting that McCain’s chief political crony (aside from Graham), who spoke at the convention and who’s been relentlessly on message for the past six months, would be knocking Palin with 10 days left?

Here’s the final piece of her interview with Brian Williams, which must be the longest I’ve heard her speak on the subject of her treatment by the media. “I think the most frustrating thing has been some unfair shots taken against my family because they have been based on lies,” she says. I wonder who she has in mind.

The Mainstream Media is going to regret playing their hand so strongly in the political process. Mark my words, people are going to remember this mind control BS that’s been going on, and people are going to hold a grudge towards the people who are supposed to report the facts and not distort them.

WOW. I get quoted right out of the gate. Nice. You are correct, of course, skree. By November 3, our sweet Sarah will be transmogrified – in the eyes of the Drive-By media – as Akasha, Queen of the Damned.

Buckle up, kiddies. This is gonna be a bumpy ride to victory.

If Tom Ridge, Bush crony who invented the “color code” for terror alerts and otherwise sat on his ass at Homeland Security (which itself is a Bush boondoggle), was the VP choice, I’d have to carry an airsickness bag with me when I vote for McCain. I’d do it, but very reluctantly.

Just another example of the media feeding off of Osama Obama’s prescribed talking points calendar.

They only way we can destroy this disgusting machine is to defeat it with our votes. And then turn our backs on the perps. All of them.

MrScribbler on October 24, 2008 at 8:22 PM

Tom Ridge makes me want to puke. Nobody in Pennsylvania gives a rat’s ass about him anymore. He would have been an even bigger laughingstock in this campaign than Biden or Palin.

Joe Biden is supposed to be the Third Senator from Pennsylvania too, and he and Obama likely are not even going to carry Scranton.

If John McCain loses this election, it will not be because he choe Sarah Palin as his running mate. It will be because Barack Obama spent $500 million making George Bush his running mate.

Thanks for the link. This was interesting:

The Internet and alternative media are stealing your readers, your advertisers and your top young talent. Many of your peers shrewdly took golden parachutes and disappeared. Your job doesn’t have anywhere near the power and influence it did when your started your climb. The Newspaper Guild is too weak to protect you any more, and there is a very good chance you’ll lose your job before you cross that finish line, ten years hence, of retirement and a pension.

In other words, you are facing career catastrophe -and desperate times call for desperate measures. Even if you have to risk everything on a single Hail Mary play. Even if you have to compromise the principles that got you here. After all, newspapers and network news are doomed anyway – all that counts is keeping them on life support until you can retire.

And then the opportunity presents itself: an attractive young candidate whose politics likely matches yours, but more important, he offers the prospect of a transformed Washington with the power to fix everything that has gone wrong in your career. With luck, this monolithic, single-party government will crush the alternative media via a revived Fairness Doctrine, re-invigorate unions by getting rid of secret votes, and just maybe, be beholden to people like you in the traditional media for getting it there.

And besides, you tell yourself, it’s all for the good of the country . . .

Weight of Glory on October 24, 2008 at 8:28 PM

I have noticed a couple of interesting things at Instapundit concerning the media recently.

First of all Reynolds had some interesting numbers on declining numbers for news outlets. CBS, NBC, ABC, etc, all losing viewers. A half million in recent months on an average.

Also he mentioned a poll {yes I know another poll} in which 70% of the population believes the media favors Obama and wants him to win.

Sometimes I wonder if people are thinking of voting for Obama for that reason, nothing but good news from now until the next Republican wins. If you get my meaning.

Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 8:28 PM

Gov. Palin makes them so angry, because
they know she and Sen. McCain are going
to win. They realised that at the
convention, and they’ve been going
ballistic since. The MSM wouldn’t be
going to the depths they’ve sunk too,
if they weren’t on a raging temper
tantrum over the up-coming defeat of
Sen. Obama.

Last poll I saw on the media it was 8:1 favors Obama.

Socialism doesn’t fail, it just runs out of free pies baked by others, to hand out.

I went to the Palin rally in Springfield MO here today and it was great. Only a few protesters with a sign about Palin and something to do with fascism or her being a fascist. So I stroll over and ask one of the freaks holding the sign, and with a mask on I might add, what a fascist is….*crickets*

So then one of the masked bandits asked me if I thought Palin was experienced enough to be President should McCain die in office. Oh, I was really hoping they would ask and here is the answer, which I stole from an LGF commenter.
Me: “Yes and reason is Because John McCain chose her to be his vice president and I trust the judgment of somebody who was tortured by communists far more than the judgment of somebody who was educated by communists.”

It is also arguable that this blogger does not know his butt from a hole in the ground when it comes to PA politics. Tom Ridge couldn’t get elected dog catcher in PA, my state. There is a reason he hasn’t run for anything in PA in a decade. He is widely viewed as a mediocrity and a dud. He was done before Bush appointed him to Homeland Security. Where NBC, CBS, ABC and spin-off channels treated the Bushes like the plague, it’ll be a running fire-fight to get inside the Obama White House first.

Brian Williams has been doing a Tom Brokaw impression for years. He is phony and unoriginal.
Sarah Palin is a true original.

Me: “Yes and reason is Because John McCain chose her to be his vice president and I trust the judgment of somebody who was tortured by communists far more than the judgment of somebody who was educated by communists.”

Game. Set. Match.

Agree with the others – brilliant – quote of the day worthy!

I would add that I wish McCain had defended Palin in those terms – had said “you know, I’ve been around a bit, I had the honor to serve with heroes [etc., etc.], I’ve been involved and at the center of every major security challenge this country has faced for the last generation, and when I met Sarah, I knew. This is a woman of tremendous character, bedrock faith, and common sense. That’s what we need in a president, and I’ll put my personal judgment up against any man alive that she would do the right thing for this country if the burden of decision falls on her.”

If he didn’t believe that, he wouldn’t have chosen her.

When this little pimp asked about her med records, she should have said “got your shoes Brian? let’s go run…I’ll kick your butt, come on smartass”

LtE126 on October 24, 2008 at 9:49 PM

Ridge or Lieberman for VP would have been a dud. McCain is as close as he is now because he picked Sarah.

I didn’t even plan to vote if McCain picked a pro-abortion candidate for VP.

Even in the very unlikely event Ridge helped in PA, the severe low Republican turnout would have lost 6 other battleground states including VA, NC, FL, and possibly CO and NV anyway.

McCain made the right pick, should have worked with her and introduced her better on the issues and to the press, and most importantly, put together a concise focused economic plan and sold it to Americans along with fighting hard on Obama’s problems like Wright. He didn’t have to sign the bailout bill and he didn’t have to ‘postpone the campaign’.

If I recall correctly Betty Davis’ comment in “All About Eve” did indeed cause a bumpy ride for her character, BUT her character won out in the end against the evil, young woman, (Ann Baxter), trying to sabotage Betty’s career!

I have looked at the polls, the internals, been to the opposition’s sites, been to Conservative sites, listened to talk radio, and looked at past election history. Despite our woeful education of the yutes of America, McCain is beating Obama in that category in IBD. Who knew? There is a solidarity forming across the fruited plains that suggest, WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH of this media, Obama and his socialistic outlook for America. If Joe the Plumber got it, then folks there is a lot more Americans that get it too! Joe is NOT like David Brooks who DO NOT GET IT! God love ya Joe!

The only way we will lose is if you do not fight and drag everyone you know to the polls. We need to make this a firm “NO!” to Marxist everywhere in America.

Buckle up, kiddies. This is gonna be a bumpy ride to victory.

By the way, a tad off topic, but thinking of glorious old black and white movies I have lately been thinking about the (1942) movie “Keeper of the Flame” with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. If you get a chance to see it, you will find creepy similarities to what is going on now in our country. 5th column type things and all the brainwashing that goes along with it. Check it out!

God damn! I SO want this woman to be the first woman to be President of the United States!

THIS is a real woman, and clearly a real leader. Anyone who can’t see that doesn’t want to see it.

Let’s make it so, people.

I *heart* Sarah.

Gov. Palin makes them so angry, because they know she and Sen. McCain are going to win. Mulligan on October 24, 2008 at 8:29 PM

O Lord I really hope so.

Maybe the big variance in the polls is due to the Bradley effect???

Why in the HELL do McCain & Palin still talk to these drive media people? They should know by now they are out to destory them

thmcbb on October 24, 2008 at 8:52 PM

Because as Palin gets better at interviews, she looks better to those that are watching and reading the drive by media.

1 – the bangle bracelets ringing with every hand gesture does not help

2 – Neither does the relatively heavy make-up. The convention speech make-up was great and all of the outfits other than the red leather jacket have been great.

3 – it is not sexist to say these two simple things would change the sense of 1980’s silliness which is just a distraction from this woman’s genius

4 – Hey McCain, hire me! As a female product of the 80’s who is also a genius, and a Joe Public addicted to politics, I can help!

nemo239 on October 24, 2008 at 11:56 PM

Shakespeare was wrong, it needs to be the reporters first, not the lawyers. We need to have priorities.

In all seriousness, what can stop this sort of blatant violation of the ‘freedom of the press’? What exactly do they think they are gaining? Sooner or later, the worm will turn. My deep set fear, is that there is blood in our future. I’ve never been happier that I live more than 60 miles from a big city (and not really all that big), but I’m still stocking up and food, ammo, and good friends to watch my back. Because if this doesn’t all come undone and reset to more of the constitutional REPUBLIC we’re supposed to have, then the great experiment is already undone.
.

Why do we honor the freedom of the press, when they do nothing to deserve those freedoms?

Falconsword on October 25, 2008 at 12:12 AM

5 – the different eyeglass frames in the policy speech today disappointed me; it conveyed that she was somehow less serious in her other glasses.

(flipping channels I have found no coverage of the speech)

nemo239 on October 25, 2008 at 12:17 AM

blood is boiling watching Larry King but Hitchens just revealed unintentionally that his defection to Obama comes from Palin’s Christian faith… (”she doesn’t agree with fruit flies because she doesn’t agree with genetics, only creationism” or something like that)
