Krauthammer’s endorsement

Charles Krauthammer hasn’t been the happiest of conservatives in this race, but he still understands the vital interests at stake in the election.  Unlike some other conservatives who have decided to issue endorsements out of spite, Krauthammer backs the man who has annoyed him at several points in this election.  He also reminds people that the Presidency isn’t a beauty or popularity contest — or at least it shouldn’t be:

The case for McCain is straightforward. The financial crisis has made us forget, or just blindly deny, how dangerous the world out there is. We have a generations-long struggle with Islamic jihadism. An apocalyptic soon-to-be-nuclear Iran. A nuclear-armed Pakistan in danger of fragmentation. A rising Russia pushing the limits of revanchism. Plus the sure-to-come Falklands-like surprise popping out of nowhere.

Who do you want answering that phone at 3 a.m.? A man who’s been cramming on these issues for the past year, who’s never had to make an executive decision affecting so much as a city, let alone the world? A foreign policy novice instinctively inclined to the flabbiest, most vaporous multilateralism (e.g., the Berlin Wall came down because of “a world that stands as one”), and who refers to the most deliberate act of war since Pearl Harbor as “the tragedy of 9/11,” a term more appropriate for a bus accident?

Or do you want a man who is the most prepared, most knowledgeable, most serious foreign policy thinker in the United States Senate? A man who not only has the best instincts but has the honor and the courage to, yes, put country first, as when he carried the lonely fight for the surge that turned Iraq from catastrophic defeat into achievable strategic victory?

Krauthammer scoffs at the notion, floated by both Colin Powell and Christopher Buckley, that people should vote for Obama because of McCain’s campaigning:

Nor will I countenance the “dirty campaign” pretense. The double standard here is stunning. Obama ran a scurrilous Spanish-language ad falsely associating McCain with anti-Hispanic slurs. Another ad falsely claimed that McCain supports “cutting Social Security benefits in half.” And for months Democrats insisted that McCain sought 100 years of war in Iraq.

McCain’s critics are offended that he raised the issue of William Ayers. What’s astonishing is that Obama was himself not offended by William Ayers.

There has been a huge double standard in the “offensive campaigning” reporting, and Krauthammer doesn’t mention the worst of it.  Barack Obama and his campaign surrogates have openly called McCain, the RNC, and Republicans racists for opposing him.  These statements were blatant, explicit, made repeatedly, and utterly false. With the exception of one time each by the Washington Post and ABC News (on their blogs), the media did nothing to expose this tactic by Obama and his campaign employed on these occasions:

Krauthammer calls Obama’s foreign-policy instincts “flabby”, but we can apply that to the thinking of other conservatives who have endorsed Obama.  Ken Adelman followed Christopher Buckley in engaging in little more than wishing on a birthday candle that Obama will become more conservative once he wins the election.  Neither of them gave any evidence to believe that Obama would do so.  Instead of treating this election as a choice between a centrist and a hard-Left ideologue, Adelman and Buckley indulged in spite over their distaste for McCain and wound up making fools of themselves.

CK is one of the most brilliant thinkers of our age. I’d love to see him in some position to better benefit our country, although his current position is a huge asset for us.

Star20 on October 24, 2008 at 12:35 PM

Damn, that was good.

And right.

How sad its going to be when some of these Obama voters – including some conservatives apparently – are forced to understand Krauthammer’s very basic point.

We’re all going to be witness to this colossal mistake. I hope its not my family that pays the ultimate price. Or yours.

Set ideology aside – and there is no comparison between the two candidates. One is not qualified. One is eminently qualified.

It is stunning that we’re on the verge of making the wrong choice when the choice is so very obvious.

Here’s hoping that ManlyRash is right and that all of these fools will be saved from their own mistake.

Hopefully they’ll have 4 years of McCain/Palin during which they can return to their senses.

No one can tell me, with any sort of intellectual honesty, that Barack Obama is more qualified than John McCain to be the Commander in Chief of our armed forces.

Further, Obama is incredibly unqualified to fulfill that role. Allowing a man like that to attain that kind of power is reckless, irresponsible, and I’d say immoral.

While I am not calling Sen. Obama a Muslim

Barry Soetoro is either Muslim or apostate. Fact.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Let’s roll.

Vote for McCain and work at bringing others to vote for McCain….I was a Fredhead and no fan of McCain at the beginning, but he’s on fire and I can’t wait to see him face down Putin.

It’s time to man up all the way to November 4th.

Let’s roll.

It’s time to start making note of the ‘conservatives’ and RINO’s and keep the list in mind – the ones that have/are against Palin/McCain and endorsed “O”.

Here is a start – please add and update:
1. Christopher Buckley
2. Peggy Noonan
3. David Brooks
4. Ken Adelman
5. Scott McClellan
6.

I hoped Krauthammer would pull through loud and clear!

Rush is playing an old ’90s Obama tape.

Obama said, “I could not realize my individual salvation without first accomplishing a collective salvation.”

So Obama, The Authoritarian Big Brother, will not repent of his own sins before purging you and me of what he considers our sins!

Finally, Dr. K knocks it out of the park. He is one of the clearest thinkers and the most articulate writers of our time. Thank you, sir.

What everyone keeps forgetting to mention is that the republican VP candidate is also much more qualified than BO to be president. My god, If the man wasn’t about to become president he couldn’t even get a security clearance. Anyway, good for CK. He told it like it is.

The double standard is so obvious, yet
ignored. Obama treats the media like dirt
(the stinky plane, making them pay to go to
his election night party, etc.) and yet they
treat him like he’s a demi-god.

Did Charles suffer a back injury sometime in his life? When ever I see him on Brit Humme’s panel he looks so stiff as if he has an injury of some sort.

One of the most ignored wise individuals, and eloquent writers, thinkers of our time, Dr. Thomas Sowell, and a few others, such as Dr. Walter Williams, Larry Elder, Esq/Talk Radio Host, Michelle Malkin, Don Adams, Criminology Professor, Writer, appear to be ignored as well.

These, and others, exhibit excellent judgment, exemplary command of the English language and speaking/writing skills, in depth knowledge of their subject, and clear thinking.

I would LOVE to see more people become aware of their writing, opinions, etc., and their ideas and ideals influence more clear thinking among my fellow US citizens, especially among those who support or follow the Leftist-Liberal-Democrat mind set, those who are about to push our nation into the pit of hell by electing an unqualified, cynical individual who harbors deep contempt for our nation.

Yes, I’m referring to Barrack Obama, as well as the Democrats who are, possibly, about to give the Democrat/leftist/US hating Democrat Party free reign in Congress and the Executive Branch, putting our nation in grave danger.

C.K. is the main reason I watch the evening news on Fox.
Many times I tune in late, just to try and catch his comments.
I don’t always agree with him but always enjoy his opinions and he often changes my thought process on a particular topic.
He’s that enlightening-almost always learn something each time I listen to him on air.
Thank you C.K.

Krauthammer is right I think.

I just can not understand how someone who calls himself or herself a conservative can endorse Obama, because of Palin or because McCain pissed them off in the campaign or anything else. How can you take any of these people seriously again?

Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 5:28 PM

Manly Rash:

I don’t think Kristol or Barnes need to be on that list. I don’t always agree with them but so far as I know they have not endorsed Obama. In fact Kristol was out there supporting Palin when Krauthammer was very critical of both her and McCain.

Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 5:30 PM

Thank you wise_man and patrick.

mindhacker on October 24, 2008 at 6:38 PM

Charles Krauthammer has stepped up to the plate and manned up. Our principles define who and what we are. Noonan, Buckley, Powell and the other fair-weather ‘conservatives’ have shown themselves to be empty as they willingly allowed themselves to be co-opted in exchange for perqs and access in a possible New Obama Order. It is in times such as this that you find out who has principles and who doesn’t.

It would most poetic justice if McCain and Palin win this election leaving the faux-conservatives sucking oxygen…

Sapwolf on October 24, 2008 at 7:33 PM

I think she can, actually. Krauthammer impresses me as the sort who thinks that actions speak louder than words. She gets some more experience under her belt (without falling prey to the corruption of the system), shows him what we all know about her–that she’s a quick study and and adept learner–and he’ll be on board.

Matt Helm on October 24, 2008 at 7:43 PM

I posted this earlier on the headlines thread, but it applies here too:

After this election, regardless of what happens, there will be a shaking up of conservatism. People such as me who are disaffected Democrats and others will join and embrace our fellow conservatives while the co-opted East Coast glitterati will continue to gravitate towards Obama and the Washington establishment. The East Coast glitterati will be disowned by us–we will not accept their leadership, nor will we support them in any way, manner, or form. We will find our own intellectual and political leadership as we chart our own course, taking what we find best from our forebears: Reagan, Goldwater, Eisenhower, all the way back to Lincoln and Jefferson and from across the seas to Burke, Hume, and Locke. To that, we will add our own unique contributions thanks to thinkers such as Krauthammer, Thomas Sowell, and Victor Davis Hanson, along with new voices, communicators such as Rush Limbaugh and others, and leaders such as Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal, and others.

We do not need the glitterati. We will do just fine on our own. It might take us a while to get going and it won’t be easy as the Democratic Party will do its best to maintain its monopoly on power by crushing opposing voices, but we will persevere and we will succeed in the end.

Later on in the thread, someone suggested that we get together a list of all the Glitterati Faux-Conservatives who have cut and run. I would suggest that that is a good idea. We do not vote for any of these individuals should they run for office, we do not watch or listen to their programs, do not read their columns, do not patronize their websites, do not buy their books, do not support them in any way, manner, or form. We ostracize them.

Matt Helm on October 24, 2008 at 7:59 PM

From “The Corner” Andy McCarthy refers to the proposed Department of Peace and Justice (actually in a House bill). Is this how Barney Frank will maneuver his 25% cut in Defense in an Obama administration?

Lord, help us. Orwell was not kidding.

BTW I saw a professionally printed lawn sign yesterday that said “Democrats for McCain”.

onlineanalyst on October 24, 2008 at 9:36 PM

I see Obama becoming more liberal after he takes office, never more conservative. He’s hanging out in the center for now to lure people into thinking he’s going to stay there. He will LUNGE to the left the moment he takes office and probably set records for leftwing governing. This man will say or do anything to get into office, then thumb his nose at everyone and go about his merry way. Pelosi doesn’t see this yet. It’s going to hit the fan when she realizes he won’t be her sock puppet.

I like Charles a ton and have always found his commentary to be outstanding. However his disdain for Sarah and diminishment of her and what she adds to the ticket really annoy me.

Frankly, Sarah is the best thing McCain has ever done. This race wouldnt even be close without her. Can’t believe someone as smart as Krauthammer cannot acknowledge that

Plus the sure-to-come Falklands-like surprise popping out of nowhere.

This is the one that scares me the most. Don’t know when, don’t know where, don’t know what, but I do know that we’ll probably have a novice in the White House thinking, “Oh crap, now I have to make some decisions…”

Question to you all: Any thoughts about where this Falklands-like surprise may come from? Just curious.

Rats abandoning ship…

Rats (vermin) carry diseases or parasites that harbor diseases. First they brought their disease (big government, pro-choice, big tent, etc.) policies and ideas, telling us that we *had* to back McCain (RINO) and casting out the true conservatives. But then, when their RINO candidate looks to be about to lose, they run and scurry to the enemy leaving us with their mess.

Rats/RINOs won’t be let back in, they are nothing but spineless, sniveling, sychophants. There won’t be forgiveness (even if some of us are Christians) for these traitors. Next time, we’ll be following Palin, Thompson, Romney, Keyes, Steele, Pence, Tancredo, Bachmann and other true conservatives. The gates will be locked and the vermin will be left out in the rain…

I won’t be sending money to the RNC again. All of my campaign donations (if I can afford it after the Dems are done with me) will be going to individual politicians. I’m seriously considering closing out my 401k, taking all of my money out of the bank and moving the wife and kids to Alaska, or somewhere else remote to weather the coming dissolution of the US.

God help us.
