Frank: Agree to stimulus now or watch us throw money away later

posted at 3:20 pm on October 24, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Just in case the message hasn’t quite gotten through to voters, Barney Frank reminded Republicans what one-party government would look like in 2009.  Democrats want to escalate government spending in what looks more like a new New Deal while we face the consequences of entitlement explosion that the first one created.  And if the GOP doesn’t play ball now, they’ll lose any chance of limiting the spending later:

Liberal-leaning economists made the case for several new and expensive spending programs as a House panel on Friday pressed the Democratic case for legislation to try again to jump-start the sagging economy.

Even though Congress is in recess, Democrats have held several hearings this week to make the case for a $150 billion or more economic stimulus measure to follow the $700 billion bank rescue passed three weeks ago. A round of tax rebates and business tax breaks passed in February was credited with giving the economy a modest boost over the summer, but fears of a protracted recession after the credit crisis have Democrats promising more. …

If Republicans continue to resist, said Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., Democrats are likely to rejoin the issue in January, when they expect party standard bearer Barack Obama to take the oath of office as president.

“There’s no question the House will pass … a much bigger (stimulus plan) than we passed before,” Frank said of a postelection lame duck session. “If enough Republicans in the Senate decide to filibuster it … then we’ll just wait until January.”

John McCain has apparently decided to make the divided-government argument in the final ten days.  This could be Exhibit A.  Without a check on a Democratic Congress in the White House, Frank and his allies will run wild on spending, creating massive new entitlements and government works programs, pulling capital out of the markets to fund it.  Instead of having a chance at reforming Social Security and especially Medicare, they’ll busily create an even bigger economic disaster.

Republicans need to defiantly answer Frank’s extortion by running this threat in ads for the next 10 days in every close Congressional race.  They need to ask voters whether they want to put government in the hands of people who want to take even more of their money to make government even bigger than it is now.  If nothing else, it prepares the ground for 2010 and the next midterms.

Update: How will they pay for it all?  Frank suggests a 25% reduction in defense spending — while we’re at war.

Barney and the Democrats are idiots if they think that you stimulate the economy by “paying” for the stimulus. Even under the assumptions of discredited Keynesian economic theory government spending in total must rise to simulate the economy. If you cut $150 million dollars from defense so you can fund an economic stimulus program of a $150 million then you get zero stimulus. What you get is highly skilled aerospace workers reduced to poverty while you give the money to the unskilled. The impoverishment of the population is the real objective of the Obama economic program.

Obama’s model of society is that which is found in his old senatorial district in Chicago. A majority of the population on welfare supporting a class of small business owners making ends meet and lorded over by a socialist political cast.

The Democrats (and especially Obama and Pelosi, John Kerry and Frank) want to disable our military.

That’s been their goal, that remains their goal.

All their “domestic spending” brouhaha is just them laying the rails for what they’ll do with our defense budget, but the goal is to disable our military.

Democrats go ballistic (odd choice of words, but realistic) when this frank point about their plans is stated as frankly as I just have, but, it’s the frank reality of what they have in mind, what they want, what they have persistently worked for and continue to.

Rep. Barney Frank, who deliberately opposed oversight of Fannie Mae while he was schtupping one of their financial officers?

Somebody explain to me why this corrupt piece of trash is not in jail.

philwynk on October 24, 2008 at 3:25 PM

The Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac ripoff is part of the Democrats’ “bleed America into destruction” process.

I am not clear on just who and what will be their source of income/money once America is destroyed as they appear to seek by various, ongoing corruption processes, but, the reason the ugly, corrupt, offensive Frank is not in jail is because he’s protected and enabled by other ugly, corrupt, offensive Democrats. Like Schumer, Pelosi, Kerry, Dodd, Reid…

Perhaps I’d include that The Zero will put Canada at our mercy, probably require Canada to go into service for, uhh, certain celebrities, “or else.”

The Zero’s whole anti-NAFTA animosity is hardly the way to sell a good impression about what he thinks of Canada, particularly.

S on October 24, 2008 at 8:53 PM

OT somewhat…

Obama clip now being played by Hannity on H&C on Fox…Obama has that “I’ve smoked two packs today” thick smoker voice and his lips are even more purple than ever before.

Guy’s stoned or so hopped on nicotine he doesn’t need any other substances (but I really, REALLY doubt Obama is a sober guy).

S on October 24, 2008 at 9:03 PM

…adding:

I don’t know why smokers don’t get that their voices are ruined by cigarettes, not “assisted” by smoking, but ruined by it. Rather than sounding like they have “a deep voice,” they just sound like they’re heavy smokers. Not good.

Another day to revile Obama and his ugliness. HOnestly, so repulsive, I don’t know where to begin.

They can’t be this stupid, can they be? Is there something else going on here? At some point, the whole government will collapse of it’s own weight. Perhaps that is the point.
Why not just increase spending a hundred trillion more? 200 hundred trillion!? 800 trillion!
So much going on and so many things happening. Obama proclaims himself a citizen of the world while saying he will change the world.
Sounds like the beginnings of a one world government and perhaps Obama will at it’s helm.

Fortunately for him, seems like no one in the Republican Party has enough of a pair to trumpet that little liaison from the rooftops anytime someone talks about the Bailout.

First Barney with this boondoggle, then Kennedy with universal healthcare…goodbye US economy.

Am I in some alternate universe???? Are the sheep in this country so willing to be led off to slaughter? Can McCain and his incompetent campaign not build a case with so much ammunition?
A 25% cut in the Military, Stealing our 401K’s, Higher Taxes, Bill Ayers, Rev Wright, free tuition to illegals, who will no longer be illegal because they will be granted full citizenship, I am sure, so they can continue to vote for the Democratic machine.
And If you need more proof that this whole housing debacle/Wall Street-Financial Crash is the fault of the Democrats, the proof is the fact that there is no “gate” no Finance-gate, no Wallstreet-gate, no call for an investigation by congress, because any real investigation would have to point the finger at them, and they don’t want that. And the Dumb-ass Republicans just sit back and take it. They can’t communicate for crap. Who is advising? who is in charge????

Nice Ed. The polls suggest no one is listening. I am sorry to say we are not a smart society. Pelosi promised change 2 years ago and her House has done nothing.
A full fledged liberal government is coming. They are even telling us what they have planned and the polls tell us we are OK with this.
For me it’s time to firm up relationships with others that see the pain ahead and plan accordingly.
We are in for some tough times.

jgapinoy on October 25, 2008 at 9:54 AM

Frank has now deemed the American people ‘the government’s official money tree’ as he plans to pick from its foliage to the tune of 1 trillion dollars to pay for the Democrat’s pet ‘projects’.

It should be understood that the Democrats have worked long and hard in the vineyard of ‘total control’ in order to get us where we are today – a financial crisis.

And how was it done? By forcing financial institutions to make bad loans which would eventually cause them to fail thus making it possible for the government to step in and ‘save’ them from themselves.

And if you think that it was not pre-planned so the Democrats could finally take total control of the economy – then you are naïve to the highest order, because that’s exactly where we are now.

Today, the Democrats, like Batman’s Joker, have permanent smiles on their faces at what they have been able to accomplish.

As a result, the American people will, no doubt, be in hell for years to come.

Frank: Agree to stimulus now or watch us throw money away later

Rather, I think the line should read “…AND watch us throw money away later.” Especially if the Democrats manage to commandeer most of the rest of the seats in Congress.

If the Messiah gets elected, and if Dems grab a bigger majority of seats than they already have, I will not work one more minute of overtime. Sure, I can always use the money, but I won’t even get to see it – and I’m not gonna fund a dime more of somebody’s handout than I absolutely have to.
