Final bill on the Barackopolis: $5.3 million

posted at 10:31 am on October 24, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Keep this figure in mind when people claim that the $150,000 the RNC spent on Sarah Palin’s wardrobe represents some kind of frivolity.  At least she’s going to wear the clothes more than once, and it may raise some decent funds for charity at the end of the campaign.  The Democrats spent an additional $5.3 million on the Barackopolis at Invesco Field, after spending over $14 million to outfit the Pepsi Center:

In its FEC filing, the host committee said it incurred $53.67 million in operating expenses and spent $53.86 million.

Most of that money went to pay expenses of the Democratic National Convention Committee, the party organization that staged the DNC. Nine percent of the host committee’s money went to pay its own expenses, which included salaries, marketing and staging various events off the convention grounds.

Convention expenses paid by the committee included $14.1 million for construction costs, including the stage and lighting, at the Pepsi Center and $5.3 million at Invesco Field.

The host committee had several fundraising shortfalls before the convention, but managed to eventually outstrip their goals — and they needed every penny.  The original $40 million estimate bloated out to over $53 million, thanks to poor planning and the change in venue on the last night.  Barack Obama’s efforts to woo special interests did the trick in covering the bill.

Under those circumstances, the extra $5.3 million for the vanity platform at Invesco seems like a strange and very frivolous spending choice.  Obama could have given the same (uninspiring) speech at the Pepsi Center and saved millions of dollars.  This isn’t the same as buying a wardrobe for a candidate who lacked one; Democrats had already spent almost $15 million on the Pepsi Center.  Obama had a perfectly good stage on which to accept his nomination and demanded another for his own ego.

Will all of the media outlets who rushed to expose the $150,000 wardrobe cost for a middle-class VP candidate report on the millions spent to feed Barack Obama’s grandeur?

$5.3 million? A drop in the bucket compared to what an Obama Administration will spend on all sorts of social programs. The cost overruns for their convention are, as Obama alluded, indicative of how his Administration will function.

I’m sure Obama will look at the federal budget and cut any programs that do not enhance his massive ego.

Heck, That One pulled that much per day in earmarks alone, baby. Wasn’t it Michelle Obama who said, “The poor will always be with you, but Barak may not make it home from the gas station?” Spend while you have the Mess-I-AM with you.

This might be damning, except Obama hasn’t based his entire political persona on some sort of small-town, Joe six pack appeal. It’s the hypocrisy of her wardrobe which makes it so hilarious.

Why aren’t the Republican surrogates and Mccain campaign handlers hammering this point home everywhere? Why are they taking the Palin wardrobe flap so tamely? It looks more and more like somebody in the Republican party is out to sabotage Sarah Palin, even at the cost of a lost election.

Keep in mind, who got the bigger bang for the buck? Most non-Kool Aid drinkers yawned over Obama’s speech. In contrast, the country went crazy over Palin.

I’d say McCain and Palin are head and shoulders above Obama in smart spending.

Plane hijacked

DEVELOPING: A passenger aboard a domestic Russian flight has hijacked the aircraft and ordered it to divert to Vienna, according to Russian law enforcement, Reuters reported.

“At 5.20 p.m. one of the passengers on a flight from Adler to Moscow cried ‘Allah Akbar’ and announced that the flight had been hijacked and demanded to change the course from Vnukovo (airport outside Moscow) to Vienna,” Reuters quotes Russian news sources as reporting.

Emergency vehicles are on their way to Vnukovo Moscow airport.

If we do 5.3 million for a 45 minutes speech we get about $118,000 per minute. So Sarah Palin entire clothing budget is worth about a minute and half of Obama stagecraft. I at least can remember some of Sarah’s outfits.

We would need to see what that includes. The $53 mil figure is DNC expenses. The link doesn’t say how the $82 mil is calculated.

sanjeevn on October 24, 2008 at 12:48 PM

Both parties spent money on facilities and both spend a good amount of money on clothes. I bet you would be surprised how much Obama spends on his threads and smokes.

The fact is that the Dems already had a venue at the Pepsi Center and had to spend 53 million to change to a venue so Obama could stroke his ego. A big part of the 53 million was closing Interstate 25 for four or five hours because the interstate runs really close to Invesco field.

To me this shows how Obama is willing to inconveinence the masses for his political show. Money being no object.
