CNN: Biden misleading on Iraq SOFA talks

This should surprise no one, but Joe Biden’s telling more whoppers on Iraq. Remember when he tried to claim credit for success in Iraq after opposing the surge? Now he claims that the Bush administration has decided to adopt Barack Obama’s withdrawal plan, too. CNN hits the buzzer, except they botch the sound effect:

Actually, Alina Cho sounded surprised by the final verdict of “misleading”, and it’s no small wonder given her confused explanation of the issue. Biden deliberately misleads his cheering throngs by confusing a couple of issues. First, the reductions in the SOFA are keyed to security improvements, not dates on a calendar, which has always been the Bush administration position.  That’s nothing new.

Second, there is a vast degree of difference between setting a timeline in January 2007 and October 2008.  The latter acknowledges that the violence has decreased to a level that the Iraqi Army can handle mostly on its own.  The former would have been an abject retreat and would have left Iraq as a failed state.  Barack Obama wanted to declare defeat and run out of Iraq, chased out by terrorists that we managed to beat without Obama’s support.

In any normal cycle, this demonstration of weakness in the face of the enemy would have sent Obama back to Illinois.  As it is, voters still have that opportunity on November 4th.

FAIRNESS DOCTRINE!!!

………. but that’s not what George Soros has paid for.

Shock! Jotox is misleading? Never!

jgapinoy on October 24, 2008 at 2:29 PM

You cannot deny that at some point we will be 16 months away from withdrawing our forces. Therefore Obama was right!
/necessary?

Does Joe Biden always YELL AT HIS AUDIENCE???

We can blame his passion for his hair loss & excessively wrinkled forehead, necessitating the plugs & Botox.

jgapinoy on October 24, 2008 at 2:30 PM

Bush didn’t come to agree with Obama’s strategy. Obama wanted us to run out of Iraq with our tail between our legs, in defeat and risking a massive civil war. McCain and Bush thought it would be better to leave Iraq in a peaceful victory. It IS subtle, but there IS a difference.

Star20 on October 24, 2008 at 2:31 PM

It took six years

…for the situation to change! BO was dead wrong six years ago!

Uhhh, I’m still waiting for the coverage on the “International Crisis” caused by the world “testing” Obama’s inexperience as a leader. Where’s that?

Has anyone considered the possibility that Biden had another aneurysm awhile back and no one noticed?

It would explain so much everything.

ManlyRash on October 24, 2008 at 2:33 PM

Ha!
(I have seen this happen. A guy on a team I was playing on tried to stop a pass and accidentally sent it into our own goal. Incidentally, it was the only time that game that someone on our team scored.)

Anyone else see Time’s Joe Klein on CNN this morning hyping the July meeting between Obama and Patraeus? Is it just me or is he tring to insinuate that Patraeus was against a timeline for withdrawal until he met with The One, who then changed his mind his it courage and steadfastness.

Doug on October 24, 2008 at 2:40 PM

Is it possible that CNN is less in the tank that the networks? Or is it just that it is harder to ignore bad press about Obama when they have to report news all day long instead of just for half an hour?

Count to 10 on October 24, 2008 at 2:41 PM

…changed his mind with his courage and steadfastness.

BohicaTwentyTwo on October 24, 2008 at 2:41 PM

Obama wanted a VP that didn’t outshine him and he definitely found the perfect person in old “no shine” Biden . . . he is sooooo dumb.

I read that. Mostly I remember it being bizarrely out of touch, toting Obama’s “I know better than the military” attitude as a positive, while slamming Bush’s enforcement of a competent commander as reckless.

Count to 10 on October 24, 2008 at 2:44 PM

Imagine these two fools in power. Obama – “Soldiers, retreat.” Biden – “FASTER, FASTER!!!”

I had forgotten about that, but, now that you mention it, that one was particularly egregious.

Ed – I love this line and especially the ending phrase that I highlighted. McCain and Palin need to use it too!

Remember the old commercial with the egg? Here’s the new version featuring an egg with a world map painted on it…

Announcer: This is your world.

Hammer blow smashes painted egg into a gooey splat.

Announcer: This is your world on Biden’s brain.

Bold Letter Message: NoBama – NoBiden

He is probably the most stupid person I have ever seen so far. My liberal’s friends keep telling me how smart people on the left are. I guess if Biden is smart I’m a genius.

canopfor on October 24, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Joe is SOFAking stupid.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 24, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Yeah, but the important thing is that the RNC spent $150K on clothing for Gov. moose killer Palin. That’s much more relevant than the Gaffe-0matic 3000 lying yet again on what’s going on in Iraq.

rbj on October 24, 2008 at 3:50 PM

The problem with Joe is that he is stupid, prone to gaffes and sufficiently dismissive of his audience that he stretches the truth, thinking he can say anything and they don’t have the intellect to discriminate between the three.

The fact that pundits and the electorate have to try and decipher the genesis of his off the wall comments should give everyone pause.

If Obama wins, Joe will get the crazy uncle treatment that befits a sitting veep. Expect Barry to send Biden on a 4 year snipe hunt (global health initiative) which will have Joe orbiting the earth more frequently than a satellite and visiting every third world hell hole that doesn’t have running water, a press corps or cameras.

dude, what’s up with her hair? doesn’t surprise me that the dems want to spin anything the public doesn’t like against bush/republicans, and take credit for anything positive. why doesn’t CNN just call biden a liar? olbermann takes great joy in calling bush a liar… for example… that was very lame reporting if you ask me… just an attempt to SEEM like they are unbiased.

thedude on October 24, 2008 at 5:59 PM

I don’t even think the MSM bothered to look up what a SOFA is. It is more of a legal/diplomatic agreement between the US and the host country on the legal Status of US military Forces. The agreement spend more time covering how our force will be treated by the local legal system. It covers what will happen if a member of the US military got into a fight downtown, would the member be prosecuted by the UCMJ or will they be prosecuted by the host nation. We have SOFAs with pretty much every NATO ally, and many of the other countries we have forces permanatly stationed in. Therefore, the existance of a SOFA implies US troops will be on the ground for an extended period of time.

cobrakai99 on October 24, 2008 at 6:18 PM –

Precisely.

As for Biden, why is it that so many refuse to accept that Biden has a long long reputation for making it up as he goes along? And people still want this guy a heartbeat away from the Presidency?

Yeah, but next to her, Julie Chen look like a Rhodes scholar.

And I’m sorry, but toward the end there was a moment in John Roberts’ eyes that looked like he was havin’ the type of feelin’ Jimmy Carter once famously confessed to.
