Was Biden talking about Obama’s plan for unilateral disarmament?
posted at 12:25 pm on October 23, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Plenty of people have been scratching their heads over Joe Biden’s warning to voters that electing Barack Obama would precipitate an international crisis to “test his mettle”. Investors Business Daily agrees with Biden, and notes that this wasn’t an off-the-cuff gaffe; Biden repeated the warning in two different venues. IBD points to this early Obama campaign video, in which Obama pledges unilateral disarmament on several fronts, as evidence supporting Biden’s hypothesis:
But there’s another angle to this, based on what Biden the senator knows — that Obama’s defense policies, once it’s obvious how they’ll undermine us, are likely to be very, very unpopular. In this case, Biden may be calling on his party’s hard, pacifist core — Moveon.org, Code Pink and the like — to stand by their man.
He’ll need their support. Like Jimmy Carter in the 1970s, Obama’s policies often sound good on the surface, but will in fact materially weaken America’s ability to defend herself. That’s not just our opinion, mind you; it’s straight from the horse’s mouth. …
Such policies will create a vacuum that our foes will be only too happy to exploit.
In response to seeing a weakling in the White House, will Russia do something rash in Eastern Europe, like invade Ukraine? Will South Korea develop a bomb, knowing the U.S. won’t stop it? Will Iran attack Israel, as it has promised, thinking America has become a paper tiger? We don’t know, but maybe Joe Biden does.
Indeed. This video had been largely forgotten since its appearance early in the primaries, when Obama sought the support of the Kucinich Left in his party. Obama deliberately positioned himself to the left of Hillary Clinton in the hopes that he could wrest support from people like Dennis Kucinich and Chris Dodd and emerge as the alternative to the Restoration. Only after he beat Hillary in the primaries did he move back towards the center on issues like the FISA reform bill, long after he had locked up enough support to gain the nomination.
Since then, though, Obama has tried hard to position himself as a Scoop Jackson Democrat. He has dropped all mention of the missile defense system or of unilaterally cutting back nuclear weapons. Obama worked hard over the summer to project himself as a traditional strong-defense candidate, and it seemed to have worked … until Biden inadvertently undermined him this week. It eliminated any help the Colin Powell endorsement gave him in terms of national security, and gave John McCain and Sarah Palin a gift on the campaign trail in reopening the national-security issue.
But did Biden mean to warn that unilateral disarmament would be unpopular, or that Obama would initially alienate the Left by demonstrating military strength in an international crisis? One could argue it either way, but I don’t think he meant to worry about the Left leaving Obama. I think Biden wanted the Left to remain activist to support a retreat philosophy in the face of aggression from our enemies. Obama has consistently fronted that policy, in Iraq and elsewhere, both as a Senator and as a presidential candidate.
Biden knows Obama will need the Left to support the consequences of its Kucinich vision for American foreign policy. That’s what the warning meant, and this video is ample evidence of the direction Obama will take in national security.

Obama and his far left advisers believe the world will be a better and safer place if:
- Russia invades Ukraine
- North Korea develops a nuclear bomb
- Israel is gone
So of course that is all of their plan. Or at least they will certainly welcome those “changes.”

“Unilateral concessions” are the two words to describe Obama’s foreign policy. He’s so bad. You don’t negotiate a house sale and say up front “I’ll pay for a termite inspection, and I’ll pay for extermination and repair of the house if need be”. But Obama said he will not have ANY US bases in Iraq. That’s crazy. It should be a negotiating point. That’s just diplomacy 101. He’s so weak. I’d like to slap him in the face.

It will take a lot to deter the liberal sheep from rushing over the cliff—more than that I think. I was with a largely liberal group this AM and couldn’t believe how really un-informed they are about Obama’s actual policies and philosophies. Ashamed to say it, but it was mostly the woman–most of them didn’t have a clue. The converstaion centered around their dislike of Bush and little or no real information about Obama. It made me even more afraid for this country than I have been. At the risk of my life, I suggested that perhaps Bush actually though he was making the best decision for this country when he went into Iraq. And, how would they feel if Obama were forced into the same position. All I got were some odd looks and snarky comments that I didn’t like it because it looks as if O will win right now. Also, to a person, they were down on Biden for “defaming” the One. A surreal experience that.

Call me a contrarian, but I interpreted Biden’s comments to mean that they expect Iran to be the test, and that they will participate to some degree in the attack to take out Iran’s nukes. Further, they expect their own best supporters to be the most distressed, and they are asking those supporters to “trust them” so that by establishing Obama’s manly credentials on the world stage they can then go about dismantling the military unimpeded by domestic dissent.
As I said, contrarian, but also fits the words that Biden used.

It is really unfortunate because we’re on the cusp of transforming our military into a new era of energy directed weapon systems. Moreover, when combined with new surveillance capabilities we can operate a much more flexible force with near dial-to-strike lethality.
Obama and the Democrats will push back this critical transformation a generation.
moxie_neanderthal on October 23, 2008 at 1:16 PM
Ed,
Obama and Biden aren’t concerned about the far Left standing by their man, Biden was speaking to the less radical elements of the Democratic party (the ones that actually have influence and money) and telling them not to react by jumping ship when Obama takes the far, far, Left on international policies. There are still a lot of Democrats (Mom and Dad, I’m talking to you) who would never be in favor of Obama if his policies followed his ideology, so this is a call for the less-than-radical Left to stick with them and see how it pans out.
Barack Neville Chamberlain Obama will appease Iran by allowing them to absorb Iraq, cede our nuclear armaments and withdraw our intelligence and military personnel perhaps?
Geministorm on October 23, 2008 at 1:16 PM
Many Obama voters hope he won’t be as liberal as he’s been in the past. Wishful thinking. Past performance is the best predictor of the future. Well, he hasn’t performed much at all, but he’s voted, and is rated “most liberal Senator” in 2007 by the National Journal. And many of his supporters hope he won’t be as he was. We might call that malignant optimism. He WILL be as he was. That’s who he is, and that’s who he will be. But, he’s so reasonable, and understanding, smart, he has what it takes. No, he has what it takes to be himself, which is very far left. That’s him, that’s how he will govern. No doubt about it.
Paul-Cincy on October 23, 2008 at 1:22 PM
There is no advantage to explain Biden’s foreboding speech in terms of the election – Biden’s speech was not good for Obama.
I disagree with most of what Biden does, but he is not anti-American.
I listened to Biden several times and to me he sounded like a man with something on his mind so burdensome that he needed to tell others so he would not have to share his burden of knowledge alone.
If we assume for a minute that Obama and William Ayers share some similar goals, that presents some likely scenarios.
Further assume that Obama will be true to his word about severely reducing American military power?
Ayers admits to this day to being a communist of the little ‘c’ variety. He is close with Hugo Chavez about whom he stated in a speech in November 2006 (in Venezuela where Chavez was present):
.
To my knowledge, Obama has not repudiated Ayers support of communism or Hugo Chavez.
What if Chavez, with Russia’s help, invades Columbia – and all President Obama does is talk and posture?
That model could be then be repeated a few more times around the world and the balance of socio-political structures in the world could very rapidly tilt toward totalitarianism.
Not only is that a fit with Biden’s words and tone, but Ayers would be thrilled and vindicated.

(1) Remember Biden is talking to their base;
(2) Together with Jesse Jackson’s remark “Zionists will no longer control the US” (paraphrasing);
My take is that Biden (and every sane person) foresees an ‘international crisis’ to test the mettle of the ‘junior senator from IL’, in the form of Israel being attacked.
Initially Obama will make a show of supporting our ally, Israel. By nothing but oral commitment. And a show of sitting down with ‘all parties concerned’. Which is the part Biden warns will not be popular with their base, and he promptly asks them to stand by Obama at this time.
And this Biden speech (not private, but it was not ‘broadcasted’) is an assurance to them that Obama knows full well ‘the right thing to do’ (i.e., abandoning Israel).

Agreed, Biden was speaking to traditional democrats not the lefty loons. A President Obama will abandon our gains in the mideast and attempt to handcuff any Irsaeli response to an attack. Iran and its proxys have been itching to take another shot at the jews and they will once they know Obama is elected. Under the watchful eye of the UN, Hezbollah in Lebonan has rearming and rebuilt its fortified positions complete with bio/chem capability and a vastly improveded anti air component including advanced warning and tracking radar. Obama will remove the newly installed American staffed radar facility in Israel, this will be the tripwire signaling the Iranians et al. that we will not get involved or respond in anyway. Iran and Hezbollah will launch a chem/bio missle campaign while Hamas and the Palistinians conduct a massive suicide terror assualt. Iraq is now in control of their airspace and will certainly deny the IAF overflight to reach Iran(though there is nothing they can do to prevent it….unless we get involved and threaten IAF aircraft) so the table will be set very nicely for the Iranians. Short of a nuclear counter strike there will be very little Israel could do but raise the white flag and hope for peace.
