Quotes of the day

posted at 10:40 pm on October 23, 2008 by Allahpundit

“Republicans tend to pick the next guy in line. Strangely enough, the next guy in line is now Sarah Palin, by virtue of her being the VP nominee this year. She will have the benefit of being both an outsider candidate and the natural heir to the nomination; indeed, the only candidate who will have experience in a general election campaign…

Palin will be the most well-financed candidate aside from Mitt Romney. She will raise gobs of money from old energy interests (who will be running scared against Obama’s green energy initiatives), and will in turn raise gobs of money from small donors online…

GOP voters simply don’t nominate new candidates who came from nowhere. Therefore, no matter what events transpire, we can safely predict that the GOP will nominate someone who is already known to us today.”

*
“Given the way she’s presented herself on the campaign trail and/or been used by the McCain campaign, and given the media narrative surrounding her candidacy at the moment, for Palin to be elected President of the United States would require an image makeover even more substantial than the one Hillary Clinton underwent between the late 1990s and this year… Such a makeover is by no means impossible – this is America! nothing’s impossible! – but running as the candidate of Rush and James Dobson in 2012 isn’t going to get her there.”

*
“Sarah’s the one… The party is broken and only she can fix it. We need someone who comes from outside Washington and relates to the aspirations of ordinary Americans.”

Newt has all the right policies though. Rove is a political genius but he approves of Bush’s big spending and is way too anathemic as a character. She could run on a “contract with america II” which would include getting rid of environmentalists and lawyers and regulation to allow us to exploit our resources, like she did in Alaska

Sorta OT, except it is about Palin and it is about her reputation.

Clothing mysteries linger.

A snippet:

Consider also the $4,902.45 charge at Atelier New York, a high-end men’s store, presumably for Ms. Palin’s husband, Todd, the famous First Dude.

Karlo Steel, an owner there, said he had gone through the store’s receipts for September, twice, and found no sales that matched that amount, nor any combination of sales that added up to the total. Because the store carries aggressively directional men’s wear, he caters to a small clientèle and knows most of his customers by name, as well as the history of their purchases.

As an aside, what the heck is “aggressively directional men’s wear”? Sounds very Fulton Street Fair.

How any who thinks can vote for Obama is beyond comprehension. The reality of a black candidate should be immaterial in our multicultural open society. The reality that being a black candidate in and of itself is all thats required to be the next POTUS is laughable and extremely prejudice. The position of President of the United States of America is not attainable via affirmative action and hypocritical populism.

I’m not a new poster, but I know we’re not getting this one. It’s going to be brutal. No matter how much we agree with Bush/ Reps/ Conservatives, most of the country isn’t with us.

I’m going to do what I can to help, but I harbor no illusions that this is an easy win. It’d be a miracle.

At some point, you take the QB out and let the backups run the last 5 minutes down. Not a perfect analogy, but it means you plan for the next game and don’t risk injurying your best players. It’s going to suck to have a full-dem government… a lot… but we have to accept the inevitable eventually.

In 2012, Obama will make another go of it if he’s out of jail.

Jim Treacher on October 23, 2008 at 11:48 PM

Why not run from jail? It’s not unprecedented.

That said, I doubt Obama will go to jail. Even if there were actual evidence that he himself approved of or committed crimes (I assume we’re speaking of election fraud)… it’s just too close to banana republics where the loser of an election is arrested as a matter of course. Ford was right to pardon Nixon. McCain is just the sort of man to pardon Obama. And, I doubt there’s a smoking gun to be found. Many members of ACORN, and some members of Obama’s campaign staff, may end up jailed… but Obama? Not likely.

ClintACK on October 24, 2008 at 12:10 AM

CCRWM on October 24, 2008 at 12:04 AM

Good concept. I wish it were that simple. For me, it was Fred->Rudy->Mitt->damn…

I voted Romney in WA after it was too late. Sarah gave me some enthusiasm, but it was met with not-enough from our side, and overwhelming from theirs. I lived in AZ and only voted McCain reluctantly because his main opponent was literally a Socialist. I’m not excited, but I’m less excited about Obama.

I know it’s “cool” nowadays to be anti-Bush, and that accounts for a lot of the negativity, but I’m not finding a lot of support around here.

I’m not confident. It’s not going well, and you can’t bank on success in this battle.

askheaves on October 24, 2008 at 12:23 AM

Douthat’s problem is similar to Frum’s: Each wrote a book (GRAND NEW PARTY and COMEBACK) intended to make waves with its grand new vision for the GOP – each kind of a wonkier compassionate conservatism – and no one gave a flying horsepatootie. Then along comes a woman who embodies in herself what flyover conservatives are desperate for, a walking contradiction of the metrocon world view, in particular on social issues, and it drives them almost as nuts as it drives leftwing feminists. They work a lifetime developing their sneers and performing eyebrow-arching exercises, while extending their accomodations with the urban-left-academic thought police, and then a natural talent turns up that they’d have to be reincarnated several times to match.

Whatever Douthat and Frum say about her – and in different ways what Noonan, Parker, Brooks, MacDonald, Buckley, and Powell have said – may look in the short term may sound dismissive for now, but most of it’s desperately defensive. Unless they’re ready to jump ship permanently, they’d be wise to stop demanding that we pick between them and Palin – or between them and Rush, and maybe even between them and the evangelicals.

CK MacLeod on October 24, 2008 at 12:23 AM

Sorry… that “maybe even” regarding the evangelicals was left over when I just said Dobson. I don’t think there’s any doubt that if the conservative movement had to choose between on the one hand the evangelicals – and with them the social conservatives more generally – and on the other the Douthats of the world, the social conservatives would win.

CK MacLeod on October 24, 2008 at 12:27 AM

I could get behind a Palin/Romney ticket after Sarah has had 4 more years running Alaska and a buttload more prep-time.

If Romney remains a conservative (he hasn’t been one for very long), I’ll be the first to buy a Palin/Romney sticker…in 2012 if McCain retires, or in 2016 if he doesn’t.

jgapinoy on October 24, 2008 at 12:36 AM

…for Palin to be elected President of the United States would require an image makeover even more substantial than the one Hillary Clinton underwent between the late 1990s and this year…

BALONEY!!! Sarah Palin does NOT need a makeover: it is the RNC and the GOP Heirarchy which needs a drastic makeover!!!

I don’t understand those in the party who would suggest that Sarah needs to change: what new idea have they come up with in the last 8 years to inspire voters??? Why should we listen to the failed RINO strategy???

Did Ronald Reagan have to change to conform to the party? NO!!! It was the other way around!!!

CCRWM on October 24, 2008 at 12:39 AM

I read every article, plus. I know where we are. Our cause is not getting out. And, even if it did, it’s not penetrating a lot of the electorate. We lost in ’06, and we didn’t adapt (like many writers rationalized we’d do). Bush is a cancer to our cause, metastasized by the serious and comedy media.

I want to be cheery and sunny going into November, but I’m not seeing it. Joe is a good tact, but he’s being painted as imaginary or disreputable by our foes. Biden is being kept under wraps so that all coverage goes Sarah’s way.

There are a lot more decideds than the media reports. We’re on defense, and it’s easy to find blame… what we need to do is what we did in Iraq: learn quickly.

We’re not turning this around in 11 days. We need 2 years.

askheaves on October 24, 2008 at 12:57 AM

askheaves on October 24, 2008 at 12:57 AM

We don’t have two years.

Osama Obama has given us a preview of the kind of no-dissent, totalitarian vision he has for this country throughout the campaign. The MSM, which seems full of people who want to be led by a Leader — it worked well in China and the Soviet Union, didn’t it? — have rendered the frightening details palatable to too many average Americans.

The “conservatives” who have jumped ship remind me of those who thought they could “deal with” past despots. Some of us know what happened to those people….

What Osama Obama represents must be destroyed (politically) now. The “Civilian Security Corps,” Obama Jugend, and courts full of the judges he picks will make it difficult for us to have another chance, no matter what the “loyal opposition conservatives” would have you believe.

I’ve said it many times before, and I’ll say it again: what she needs to do is toss out her neocon advisers. Essentially, she needs to espouse a much less hawkish foreign policy and give people the image that the GOP is once again the party of limited-government conservatism.

MedSchoolCatholic on October 24, 2008 at 3:00 AM

If Sarah doesn’t win this time, she will have four years to really get up to date on all the issues. She had been so focused on Alaskan issues, that it took a little while to learn some of the things she did not know this time. This gave the MSM time to undermine her. From what I can see, she is a quick study, and will WOW everyone in 2012.

Palin/Jindal in 2012, whether she wins this time or not. If McCain/Palin win this time, and McCain stubbornly decides to run again in 2012 – Sarah could decide to do a Murkowski on him!!!

Now, bear in mind, “fair talk” is, uhh…let’s say…open to interpretation. But pols down here have been known to employ reaction gauging whispering campaigns, and trial balloon floatings.

She should go all “loose cannon” and start hammering Rev. Wright. “I don’t think many people go to a church for 20 years where the pastor screams things like “God damn America”. Would you sit in a church like that for 20 yrs?”

BALONEY!!! Sarah Palin does NOT need a makeover: it is the RNC and the GOP Heirarchy which needs a drastic makeover!!!

What is it with these elitist morons from the East Coast. Oh that’s right, they’ve never been west of the east river and have no idea what it’s like in the real United States. All they do is pal around with their snobish, rich, elitist friends who think of us as the great unwashed who couldn’t possibly be able to think for ourselves. They are just as bad as the liberals who want to run the nanny state. Sarah Palin is a force to be reconned with and she will be the next Rep. president!

Maybe someone knows about an October Surprise? – Mr Purple on October 24, 2008 at 7:08 AM

I suspect the October Surprise already happened. His name was Samuel Joseph Wurlzbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber – the iceberg against which Obama’s Titanic collided with disastrous results.

Sarah Palin IS the future of the Republican party. In 2005-2006, some Republicans in Congress allowed themselves to be corrupted, and others were either incompetent or allowed themselves to be perceived as incompetent by failing to communicate with the American people (thank you, Scott McClellan).

Sarah Palin fought corruption in her own party in Alaska. She actually sacrificed her political career at one point by RESIGNING from the state oil and gas boards in protest, then ran for Governor, and cleaned things up within a year and a half. In Alaska, she showed herself to be both competent and incorruptible, and voters like that.

Sarah Palin’s only weakness in THIS election is that, up until her selection as VP, she had concentrated on issues involving Alaska (which is her JOB as Governor), and not much on broader issues involving the entire country, which led to some early stumbles in interviews. She is an amazingly quick study, and has improved tremendously during the campaign.

If McCain/Palin lose this election, Sarah Palin will go back to Alaska and gain more experience as Governor, while she will probably be sought as a speaker at Republican fund-raisers, and can familiarize herself with issues that members of Congress will have to deal with. An Obama Presidency with a Democrat Congress would probably lead to another 1994-like GOP landslide in 2010, and Palin could work with the new majority to emerge as the leader of the Republican renewal to take back the White House, with a detailed knowledge of the issues by 2012.

If McCain/Palin win this election, Palin will have four years as Vice President to learn how the Senate works (she will be its President), and to learn foreign policy from one of the best (McCain).

Either way, Sarah Palin would be ready to be President in 2012.

Democrats will crossover-vote in GOP promaries to make McCain the nominee again in 2012.

She doesn’t need a makeover, you snobby twits. What she needs is the media to stop doing a hatchet job on her.

Sorry guys, failed VP candidate doesn’t make anyone “next in line.” If they WIN, she’s next in line. If they lose, its “shoulda been Mitt” time.

Palin will go as far as she wants.

She has the steel.

(Obama has the arugula.)
