McCain supporter maimed for her politics by robber; Update: Hoax

Update: Ashley Todd perpetrated a hoax.  We have that in a separate post by Allahpundit.  Be sure to read that in detail, but my overall reaction is that Todd is a very, very disturbed young woman.  — Ed

Original post:

A 20-year-old woman got robbed at an ATM in a Pittsburgh suburb, and normally that would not make national news.  However, her robber wanted to make a political statement as well.  After seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car, he beat the woman and scratched a “B” into her face:

A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.

This is a horrible story, and if it happened as alleged, I hope the man gets life in prison for both the armed robbery and the maiming.  Our prayers go to the woman, who refused medical treatment at the scene, as well as our hopes for a quick and complete recovery.

However, despite the comments popping up in other threads, I don’t think this says anything terribly significant about the election or either candidate.  Criminals aren’t known for their kindness, temperament, or intellect, and this particular criminal sounds like he’s a couple of bricks short of a load even for that crowd.  The initial crime had nothing to do with politics at all, so it’s not an example of partisan thuggery as one would expect some to paint it.

I’m sure that the two campaigns will be sure to reach out to the woman.  Someone will undoubtedly press the Obama campaign for a reaction, and will get the obligatory and emphatic denunciation that everyone would expect.  We have many more important issues to debate, and many more cogent reasons to oppose Barack Obama than the offhand cruelty of one criminal in Pittsburgh.

Update (AP): Good points from Ace. I notice that Drudge has quietly moved the story from blaring red-font banner to upper-lefthand teaser.

Update II (Ed): The woman who was attacked has identified herself as Ashley Todd, who is a College Republican field representative.  Here’s the photo:

It looks like Ashley did get beaten pretty badly, and she does have a ‘B’ scratched into her cheek.  It’s not a rumor.  Hopefully, we’ll get more from the local media as the story develops, or from Ashley herself.

Update III: I agree with people in the comments who say that the beating and maiming were political, and obviously so.  Ashley wouldn’t have that wound on her face otherwise.  What I am saying is that it’s unfair to generalize about Obama supporters based on the actions of one nut.

I would also agree, though, that the media didn’t have any problems doing the same thing to the McCain campaign based on one comment allegedly yelled at a rally, and for that matter, neither did Barack Obama during the last debate.

Update IV: Let’s remember that Bill Gwatney got shot to death in an Arkansas Democratic HQ in June.  It’s dangerous to generalize on partisan lines when discussing one disturbing act of violence.

Update V: Some people are already saying “hoax”; I think that’s unlikely (but still possible).  Thanks to the local news report, we know the attack occurred.  Not too many young women would scar their faces just to create a political hoax.  As for the reversed/upside-down B, all I can tell you is that I got this from a source close to Ashley, who assured me that she wanted to go public (it was also on her Twitter page) and that the photo came directly from her.  It could have gotten reversed on the computer, or the attacker may have had her on the ground with her head upside-down in relation to his.

Update VI: Here’s a video report on the attack from KDKA-TV (via the Newsbusters).

Update VII: I spoke with two executives at the College Republicans on the record about this story.  Charlie Smith, the National Chair, and Ethan Eilon, the Executive Director, both say the photo is legitimate and that it came from Ashley Todd, the victim in this case.  The attack began at 8:50 pm ET and Ashley called the police at 9:30 PM ET. Initially, she was robbed, ran away after the robbery, and the robber followed her to her car.  At that point, he became enraged at the bumper sticker and began beating her and scratched the ‘B’ into her face. Ashley went to the hospital early this morning after initially refusing medical attention last night, and had an MRI and/or a CAT scan. Doctors believe her cheek will heal fully.

Eilon spoke with her personally today about the incident and confirmed the above with me.  He first met Ashley in June, when she came to DC for training with the College Republicans.  She works for them as a contract employee.  She does not work for the McCain campaign.  Both Eilon and Smith expressed revulsion over an attack on a young woman just getting involved in politics, but they consider this the act of a lone lunatic.

I’m not going to blame people for keeping a healthy skepticism on this case, but so far, the two media reports appear to check out.

Update VIII: The police want to administer a polygraph:

Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.

But:

“We are treating this as a credible report,” he said.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

It looks more like someone did it with a key.

Most likely the robber had a very dull knife or a key or something.

The truth?? According the Secret Service who were present, no one screamed Kill him at a McCain rally. They notice that kind of thing because it is their job to talk to people like that. There are no witnesses, no evidence, nothing. And in spite of that there is Obama yammering away on the campaign trail about it. Media people worrying over the fictitious incident as if it were a full blown assassination attempt and all sorts of silly people demanding that McCain control his people. So much for proof.

Yes, way to go. Not the first time MM has jumped all over a Republican, however, she usually leaves 20 year old crime victims alone. At least until we know for sure what is happening. Imagine how she would react if someone mugged her and the initial response was suspicion and skepticism.

You know this is why reps lose. Our party is HANDED on a SLIVER PLATER a story that could change elections in VA, NC, GA, OH and PA and instead of running with it. Our media leaders like ED, ALLAH, MICHELLE< and ACE question it and give the dems an attack point to use. I will ask this once ARE YOU PEOPLE TRYING TO LOSE THIS ELECTION. You have the birth cerificate troubles, the failure to release college transscript, Ayers, Wright, this hate crime, election fraud in money and votes and McCain and you idiots in the media question them? You think KOS waited around to make charges against Gov Palin? No they threw everything at the wall before it was proven or disproven. They didn’t sit around and look at their navels. The election is in 12 days people. This case will not be proven or disproven before then. You role with the army you have. This is news. I happen to think it is real. But regradless it is news. why do we give the dems the benifit of the doubt. they will never give it to us. Has my party under McCain become a party of pus*ies?

I know but the damage has been done. You can see from the trolls on here. the attack the victim card was played by our own people and that gave the green light to all the dem trolls. Our people are idiots at times. This was a hate crime. A black/white mugging, branding and beating and instead of rightous outrage and anger our “media elite” question it? Are these people so under the spell of….what being accused of racism that every thing has to be questioned? We got 12 days left. When God hands you an attack you use it, you do not point the gun at yourself and pull the trigger. MM is an idiot as far as this goes. She was so wrong on the bailout last year that her and other “free market” people iunstead of spending $300b to fix the problem has now cost us Trillions and the problem still is not fixed.

The facts as reported tell you all you need to know. She was too stupid to realize she needed a tetanus shot and too scared to go to the hospital lest more and more questions get asked of her. If he was holding her from behind and scratching it in, then he’s amazing! Did a whole B without looking! If he held her on the ground from above her head then he sure is one kind, gentle-handed robber to barely scratch her face like that in the middle of a violent attack.

MM has hang ups on women’s issues as well (and by that I don’t mean abortion, I mean sexism), imho, in addition to her obvious hostility to the Republican party. Too bad, but she’s one missing marble short of a Paultard at this point.

I think one thing is for sure, whatever the truth is the Democrats will do their best to destroy the girl. Her family, her parents, her friends, everything will become fodder. They will be in court houses looking for liens, they will be looking at her income, who she calls and when. they will go through her trash, tried to get her fired and in general make her wish she had never come forward.

I just think it might be a good idea to wait until we attack her, because we know they will.

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 10:14 PM

Attacking her?

Crap; look at what they did to Joe the Plumber!

They’ll destroy this girl, make no doubt about it!

Now, even Malkin says she doubts the story!

Look, I don’t know it if its true, but I sure as hell know it’s possible.

After what I heard on the MARTA ride home, the other night, as I relayed two days ago; the angry black guy telling all the other passengers, if you even THINK about voting Republican, YOU ARE RACIST; that’s a fact!

Addtionally, my wife and I, right after the Iraq War started, bought the little American Flags and the Yellow Ribbons with the “Please Support our Troops”; on them; down here in Atlanta; it was a Weekly occurance for us to get Flipped Off, Cut Off in Traffic, Glares, Honks, Screams; my wife, after getting almost run off the road several times accompanied by screams and and “Fuck You” and the Middle Finger, started to get really, really concerned for her safety when driving alone; I refused to take them off the car, because I was going to catch one of the POS’s one day, and beat the crap out of them; and we went to a movie one weekend with our daughters, and when we came out of the movie, the yellow ribbons (2 of them) and the American Flag (all magnet attached) were ripped into little pieces and on the ground behind our van!

I’m just guessing, it was a “Republican” who did that, anyone care to tell me different?

I called a lady that works in the same company as me today; she’s out in one of our CA offices; I never talked to her on the phone, but had exchanged emails. Anyway, I called her to talk some business, and she started moaning how the Stock Market was down, and this was crazy.

So, like an idiot, I said you think that is bad, look at this, and I emailed her the story about the Dem’s who may try to take away the Tax Break for 401K’s!

We’re in a business where we have a pretty good 401K, and a generous employer, so with her moaning about the market, it only made sense that would bother her, right?

So, I email the story, and we’re talking on the phone as she got it and read it!

And she’s going…”Oh my god, I can’t believe this, they’re taking away our 401K tax breaks…oh my….OH MY…WAIT…this is the Democrats…Oh…..Oh NO, don’t tell me you’re a REPUBLICAN, and going to vote for McCain??

Just.Like.That!

I said, what about the 401K?

Oh, well, the problems with the Stock Market are all Bush’s Fault, so they have to do something!

Bush tried Privatize Social Security, and take it away from us!

So, I carefully, and calming said “Wait, here are the FACTS: not mandatory, only people under a certain age, only a maximum of 5%, and you control your destiny, and NO ONE WAS FORCED to participate; that is NOT “privatizing Social Security”; besides, It’s MY MONEY: why can’t I control what it does!

Oh my god! She went BATSHIT CRAZY on the phone!

QUOTE: “Obama is the PERFECT Candidate”; he will change the World and America; the PERFECT Candidate and PERFECT Man!”

Crap, I thought the Messiah was descending from the Heavens!

I said do you feel comfortable with man in the Oval Office who’s been mentored and trained by Communists his whole life?

And, Hangs out with Terrorists!

She goes: “Oh, the old ‘hangs out with terrorists”; poor Obama, he was only 8 years old when Ayers did those things, and they were that bad anyway, I can’t believe you fall for that stuff”.

So, I said: “That’s funny, Obama wasn’t 8 years old when he shared an office with Ayers for 3 years after Ayers launched his political career in his living room!”

Do you know what her reply was???

“McCain has cancer, and the Republicans are covering it up; how can we let someone like that in the White House!”

I said, “I just won the arugment, we’re done, and hung up the phone!

People, whether the story about the girl is true or not; get ready for 4 years of absolute insanity, if Obama (PBUH) wins and the Anti-Anmerican/Pro-Jihadi Delusional Democratic Traitor Nutbags take over; because nothing will be beyond them, and they are completely and thorougly freaking Psychotic!

FACT!

Do you understand politics? KOs called GOv Palin a book banner, a grandmother, an idiot, a right wing kook, a creationist. All had some little bit of truth. It took weeks to disprove all of these things. In those weeks her poll numbers fell. It did not help when our own media elites piled on to the KOS. This story will not be proved or disproved before the election. This is a he said/ she said. there is no video, there is no eye witness. The chance of catching a lone mugger in Pittsburgh is about zero unless he strikes again which is unlikely in the next 12 days. the police can not prove or disprove this story.

In effect you have an unassiliable victim, a hate crime, a scarlet B shouting out about the thugs of Obama. You have a story that will inflame the people in PA, OH, VA, NC, W VA, GA etc. You have a story that could get you at least 3-4% in the popular vote. and instead of using it to win this damn election you all sit and graze at your butt cheeks. Are you really this much of whimps. and if you are them our party deserves to lose. I think the story is real but regardless if it is real or not it can not be proved one way or the other. the Obama trolls think it is real also or they would not be posting so much on this site. And if they think it isn’t real they understand identity politics enough to know what a bombshell this story could be if the REP use it to attack. To paint the Obama supporters as racist thugs. But nooooooo we have to worry about inflaming peoples anger and we must tamp this story down before the rightous anger can burn a bright yellow glow. Idiots.

Whenever a case like this comes up, I think back to how Robin Givens was treated when she was being abused by Mike Tyson. Everyone — including I’m ashamed to say, me — was sure she couldn’t possibly be getting abused by him because after all he was so big that he would have killed her. Then we learn the guy is an animal.

Reading these posts about how it isn’t possible that the guy could scratch or cut a B on her face because she would be struggling too much or the knife would cut more deeply or whatever… ridiculous.

Nor am I, incidentally. I am really disgusted by the assumption that this girl is somehow not credible because a thug who committed a violent crime against her was moved to further violence by her McCain bumper sticker. I guess when you’ve lived and worked with Ph.D.-educated “progressives” who get themselves so wound up at work that they use foul language to describe people who dare to prefer someone other than Obama (be it McCain or Hillary), I don’t have a hard time believing that a street thug may have committed battery on his young woman.

We must use everything we have to defeat Obama and his thugs. this is a story that can turn elections. Remember Willie horton? Remeber Dukukais and his wife’s rape question? Yes it will inflame some racist people but it will also inflame males, it will anger people in PA, You have Obama on tape saying to get in their faces how much more in their face do you want? should the guy have branded Obama full name inher face. A quick attack by McCain teams saying I guess when Sen Obama urged his follwers to get in their faces he did not expect his follwers to actually brand his iunital in their face. this is why Obama is not experience enough to be president. You do not say things like “get in their face” during an election.

Is that too much too ask? Obama set himself up. his own words have come back to haunt him and we do not use it? Are we that stupid?

Win or lose he is likely to get 50 million or more votes as will McCain. And you want to paint a brush across every person who votes for Obama as a “racist thug”. That is okay but if someone says that about the McCain supporters it is cause for revolution in the streets because of what a miniscule percentage of the total supporters said.
You don’t give a rats behind about the victim — you just see it as a means to an end for political purpsoes.

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 10:27 PM

Dave – I’m skeptical too, but a victim not acting rationally is not proof there’s something to hide.

People have been the victim of far worse attacks and haven’t gone to the doctor ordone anything about it because dealing with it makes it more real.

I’m not saying that’s the case here, just that lack of logical thought from a victim is fairly common.

If this is ends up being a real attack and not a false accusation,, should not Obama be asked if he is encouraging violence when he himself has told his followers to get in people’s faces and argue with them!??
This guy was just an over zealous Obama supporter. He was certainly in her face! He was certainly arguing and he certainly agreed that the wealth needed to be spread around!

and yes I am also smart enough to see this as a golden oppurtunity for the McCain campaign. You it seems are not.

You have Murtha saying western Pa are racists and rednecks
You have Obama telling his supoorts to get their faces to confront McCain supporters.
You have wright saying God Dam Amerikkka
You also have a population in OH, PA, VA, NC, WV that is deeply conservative and thinks very bad on men that hit and abuse women. You add in the racial undertow of this act and it is a possible game changer in a close election.

But you know what you go ahead and keep talking about the issues Obama wants to talk about. you play Obama’s game that he has stacked against us and see how that works out for our party. It is past time to take the gloves off. It is 12 days you fight with the army you have. Right now we have joe the plumber and a college women brutally attacked by one of Obama loving thugs. You use it so that attacks like this do not happen again. you make his campiagn pay for this type of activity. So that Obma has to get on national TV and tell his supporters to not use force. You want more victims like Ms. Todd. you blame her.

You are like the wives that make excuses for husbands that beat up their women. There is no excuse for this and it is Obama words that have cuased this level of hate. He use that so it does not happen again and if it helps us in the election so be it.

A: The phonetic spelling suggests the user is unfamiliar with the word in written form. Such errors abound when the user is merely mimicking others as opposed to understanding the context and implications of his usage.

Calling someone a liar should be a big deal. Telling them your suspicions should not. Why all the sensitivity?

I guarantee that I can create a scenario in which the details were the same that would cause the opposite response by many readers here. One doesn’t have to think that hard to do it.

Suspicion is a healthy coat to wear about “any” event with political implications during such a partisan and ugly race.

Also, what is it with people not being willing to speak their minds to another’s “face?” If you can’t say it to the person about whom you’re saying it, you are a pussy. If you are you already know it and so do the rest of us.

Well my dear it was my freshman year in college. I went to a party and some guys put something in my drink and raped me. When I came to, I barely remembered what happened. I was covered with bruises and I did not tell anyone for days. The guys continued to bother me, call me, threaten me. I told my dad that I had fallen down some stairs because I was afraid of what he would do.

After a few days of being harassed by these men I told a male friend who along with a couple of his friends went to the guys who were harassing me, who had hurt me and let them know what would happen if they kept it up.

Now, if you want to call me a liar, go ahead, there is no way I can prove it. But it is interesting to note that Obama supporters tend to be so damn anti female.
