McCain supporter maimed for her politics by robber; Update: Hoax

posted at 4:50 pm on October 23, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Update: Ashley Todd perpetrated a hoax.  We have that in a separate post by Allahpundit.  Be sure to read that in detail, but my overall reaction is that Todd is a very, very disturbed young woman.  — Ed

Original post:

A 20-year-old woman got robbed at an ATM in a Pittsburgh suburb, and normally that would not make national news.  However, her robber wanted to make a political statement as well.  After seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car, he beat the woman and scratched a “B” into her face:

A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.

This is a horrible story, and if it happened as alleged, I hope the man gets life in prison for both the armed robbery and the maiming.  Our prayers go to the woman, who refused medical treatment at the scene, as well as our hopes for a quick and complete recovery.

However, despite the comments popping up in other threads, I don’t think this says anything terribly significant about the election or either candidate.  Criminals aren’t known for their kindness, temperament, or intellect, and this particular criminal sounds like he’s a couple of bricks short of a load even for that crowd.  The initial crime had nothing to do with politics at all, so it’s not an example of partisan thuggery as one would expect some to paint it.

I’m sure that the two campaigns will be sure to reach out to the woman.  Someone will undoubtedly press the Obama campaign for a reaction, and will get the obligatory and emphatic denunciation that everyone would expect.  We have many more important issues to debate, and many more cogent reasons to oppose Barack Obama than the offhand cruelty of one criminal in Pittsburgh.

Update (AP): Good points from Ace. I notice that Drudge has quietly moved the story from blaring red-font banner to upper-lefthand teaser.

Update II (Ed): The woman who was attacked has identified herself as Ashley Todd, who is a College Republican field representative.  Here’s the photo:

It looks like Ashley did get beaten pretty badly, and she does have a ‘B’ scratched into her cheek.  It’s not a rumor.  Hopefully, we’ll get more from the local media as the story develops, or from Ashley herself.

Update III: I agree with people in the comments who say that the beating and maiming were political, and obviously so.  Ashley wouldn’t have that wound on her face otherwise.  What I am saying is that it’s unfair to generalize about Obama supporters based on the actions of one nut.

I would also agree, though, that the media didn’t have any problems doing the same thing to the McCain campaign based on one comment allegedly yelled at a rally, and for that matter, neither did Barack Obama during the last debate.

Update IV: Let’s remember that Bill Gwatney got shot to death in an Arkansas Democratic HQ in June.  It’s dangerous to generalize on partisan lines when discussing one disturbing act of violence.

Update V: Some people are already saying “hoax”; I think that’s unlikely (but still possible).  Thanks to the local news report, we know the attack occurred.  Not too many young women would scar their faces just to create a political hoax.  As for the reversed/upside-down B, all I can tell you is that I got this from a source close to Ashley, who assured me that she wanted to go public (it was also on her Twitter page) and that the photo came directly from her.  It could have gotten reversed on the computer, or the attacker may have had her on the ground with her head upside-down in relation to his.

Update VI: Here’s a video report on the attack from KDKA-TV (via the Newsbusters).

Update VII: I spoke with two executives at the College Republicans on the record about this story.  Charlie Smith, the National Chair, and Ethan Eilon, the Executive Director, both say the photo is legitimate and that it came from Ashley Todd, the victim in this case.  The attack began at 8:50 pm ET and Ashley called the police at 9:30 PM ET. Initially, she was robbed, ran away after the robbery, and the robber followed her to her car.  At that point, he became enraged at the bumper sticker and began beating her and scratched the ‘B’ into her face. Ashley went to the hospital early this morning after initially refusing medical attention last night, and had an MRI and/or a CAT scan. Doctors believe her cheek will heal fully.

Eilon spoke with her personally today about the incident and confirmed the above with me.  He first met Ashley in June, when she came to DC for training with the College Republicans.  She works for them as a contract employee.  She does not work for the McCain campaign.  Both Eilon and Smith expressed revulsion over an attack on a young woman just getting involved in politics, but they consider this the act of a lone lunatic.

I’m not going to blame people for keeping a healthy skepticism on this case, but so far, the two media reports appear to check out.

Update VIII: The police want to administer a polygraph:

Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.

But:

“We are treating this as a credible report,” he said.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

Give me a break- there are more trolls posting on this than HA regulars.

If this young lady filed a police report, they will examine the ATM tape and if she’s lying we’ll know about it in the morning. And just so you know- she’s already said SHE took the photo to show what happened to her face.

Okay, if this story is true, the MSM will hunt her down and will try to make everyone believe that she provoked the guy and we’ll know about all of her financial information, her SAT scores and who’s she’s having sex with by Monday.

If it is fake, it will fade away and someone will recommend some type of mental hygiene. But will MSM will make a comment that someone from the McCain Campaign put her up to it.

mindhacker on October 23, 2008 at 7:39 PM

Reading all that stuff will make you crazy.

BTW, there will be wars and rumors of wars.

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 6:49 PM

Well, I do read the Bible and don’t think it’ll “make” me or anyone else “crazy,” but I agree that trying to “fill in the blanks” as to prophecy does and often can lead people astray, unless they do so in the company of a number of peers who are well adjusted in their faith.

It’s just a case of not throwing out the prophecy and what the Bible has to say, just because there are abuses at times of what the Bible is and has to tell us.

It’s a reliable “document” is my point; how it’s interpreted when done so without counsel can cause problems.

S on October 23, 2008 at 7:39 PM

It’s her right cheek because she’s not holding up a camera in front of her face to get that direct closeup head-on angle. So if she were found to be left-handed then that might raise suspicion.

But no matter what, if she did this intentionally I think she would have made the B look exactly like a B so people would not start wondering why it’s upside down and asking her too many questions. It’s not too hard to know how it would look to an observer if you imagine drawing it on your own cheek. Also if you were doing it intentionally you might not make it so perfect for “realism.” So the argument can be made both ways.

For a woman to do this to her face though and risk “branding the B” on top of getting caught and embarrassing her candidate and party for life would be highly unusual behavior. McCain was gaining on Obama anyhow, so it’s not like Halloween theatrics are needed.

Pulchritudinous Patriot on October 23, 2008 at 7:40 PM

If this were real, she’d have 2 black eyes, a lacerated throat, the Obama “O” symbol carved perfectly on her left cheek and the assailant would have left a business card as well as a signed, notarized confession.

/ass-munches on this thread who are so quick to call her a liar.

Backwards B? Not So Much

RushBaby on October 23, 2008 at 6:49 PM

My first thought, too, when I saw the photo (she was upside-down when the carving occured, or, rather, attacker approached her face by standing over her, looking downward on her face and body before him).

It’s a shame this has to be explained to some people, but, well, we didn’t all get into the A and B classes in highschool.

Any time I’ve been injured (thankfully never seriously), my instinct is always to go home. As soon as I know I’m fine, I want everyone to get away from me and stop fussing because it just seems to make it all that much worse.

I could easily see a girl wanting nothing more than to go home after being attacked.

*eats*

Grue in the Attic on October 23, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Well, I did complain about that to a supervisor (said they were when I asked for one), but, it WAS Costco and the place is a big Demo-donor source.

Made my complaint, didn’t expect any effective resolution, left, started shopping at a different wharehouse after that, but, in general, Costco, despite it’s deals (I’m still a customer) is a Demo company and I admit it causes me some degree of compromise when I spend my several hundreds there every month.

Same with Cox Cable, by the way. Cox and Costco are very big, ardent Obama supporters and DNC donors. I don’t feel good about using their products, but I do.

yep, I have done that. Got jumped by 4 people (1 girl 4 guys) and got the crap beat out of me.

Needless to say I got them back… but I won’t say how.

upinak on October 23, 2008 at 7:51 PM

I don’t have any problems withholding judgment on this on – however, when I first read the story and saw the photo, I didn’t harbor any doubts at all. The account says her assailant struck her in the back of the head. My first thought was she was knocked to her knees and her assailant grabbed her from above and behind, scratching her face with a knife while holding her (hair, maybe) with the other.

So I don’t see the position of the “B” in and of itself as any proof that it’s a hoax.

What the reaction this story does tell me though is that there are many, many more people out there now who were willing to disbelieve this young lady from the get-go – most of whom appear to be from the left….which is kind of ironic, since they always fancy themselves as the champions of women.

You do have a point there. A few girls I know did just that…get injured (sometimes even seriously) and they just wanted to go home. One girl broke her ankle, and I had to force her to go to the hospital.

But still…the rest of her story, the bumper sticker and all, does not make much sense.

PS: Just checked out DU to see what the left was saying about this. Let’s just say, you don’t wanna know.

S on October 23, 2008 at 7:55 PM

It’s amazing what assumptions we make about hings we think we all know. So I did an experiment.

Grab a pocket knife with a sharp tip – like a 5″ folding buck knife. Scratch a letter in your skin somewhere like the back of your hand. Tell me what you see…It’s amazing how hard you’d actually have to “dig” to break the skin especially in something like a cheek…after about 15 minutes, check it again…what’s it look like now? Red puffy lines? You don’t say!

I have no idea if the story is true, but I know I could make a mark just like that in a cheek with a sharp buck knife without slicing the skin.

But I certainly do not think that reading the Bible makes you crazy.

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 7:57 PM

I misunderstood your earlier remark, then, thinking you’d written that ‘reading that stuff will make you crazy.’

I agree that Revelations is beyond human understanding, with any specificity. We’re not supposed to lean on our own understanding, however (also so says the Bible) and a lot of people have devoted a lot of time to interpreting and testing the interpretations as to Revelations.

Some of it seems probable, as to some of those interpretations. I reject some of the interpretations, though, as do, I imagine, many people of faith.

Which is why I wrote earlier that understanding Bible prophecy requires a great deal of serious study, counsel and sharing. You can’t do it alone or in a small group without a lot of testing otherwise. There’s always going to be someone stuck in humanism who needs some ego attention and starts acting like Obama with all the answers, so, it’s a case of reading, allowing faith to provide understanding to the faithful, and, more of that faith in God that His Word doesn’t lie.

I don’t know so much that it’s important overall to completely “interpret” Revelations, Bible prophecy, but that it’s most important to have faith in God and do what He asks of us and try to remain alert in faith to those who would lead us astray.

For example, the whole “DaVinci Code” stuff is one of leading people astray…

Anyway, I am no expert nor knowledgeable to any great degree about “end times prophecy” and don’t place a lot of focus in my faith upon that.

My only point here earlier and now is that Obama is, in my view, a vehicle for what is not from God.

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 7:57 PM

…nonsense…there are commentaries on top of commentaries on it, one of the more piquant in the 1599 edition of the Geneva translation of the Bible…it’s poetic, obscure in places, but not opaque.

The medieval Church once thought the Bible the province of theologians, and thought most theologians were cracked, but, given the efforts of many to get the translations straight, lots of folks have been skulling-out Isaiah, Revelation and some of the other less-than-literal stuff throughout Scripture, and we’ve a pretty good handle on it.

The problem comes when one tries to read Scripture as if it were just another book…and if one is the sort of person who has to understand every knook an cranny of everthing. John Calvin’s attitude that he was happy if some things remained mysterious is a good starting point for reading any important thing. It’s preferable to the modern view, held by many, that if it can’t be understood “by me”, it’s rubbish.

…that way lies ignorance, voluntarily assumed and firmly held.

…just an opinion…the Bible is the Almighty revealing Himself…it was referred to by someone (Calvin again?) as “God’s baby talk”…considering our own limitations, it still reveals so much.

Puritan1648 on October 23, 2008 at 8:35 PM

I dunno if I want to read thru 7 pages of comments, but in case it hasn’t been mentioned yet, the “B” could also be seen as scratched upside-down (as well as backwards). So, I suppose its possible that the alleged assailant could have been standing over her when he did it.

I also asked myself, why not an “O”?

This just seems too strange, and I’m kinda surprised this story is at the top of memeorandum, quite frankly. Then again, maybe I shouldn’t be.

ChenZhen on October 23, 2008 at 8:39 PM

Michelle is posting on her site that she is suspicious of the story, too. I expect a complete apology from the person who called me a troll earlier.

Kooks come in both political parties. If we don’t call them out when we suspect them(even if they are in our party), are we really any better than they are?

sheesh on October 23, 2008 at 8:41 PM

I don’t like to say it, but …

The more I look at that photo, the more I think this is a hoax. How can that ‘B,’ although backwards, be so perfect?

My next worry is that if/when the hoax is revealed, the pro-Obama media will jump all over this and use it to tar McCain supporters and the McCain campaign.

Of course, I could be totally wrong. I’m just throwing in my loose change.

My prayers for the woman and her family.

I’m with ya on all that. Not only is that backward “B” too perfect, imagine if you’re a thief, in the middle of a robbery, doing this so quickly. Like I mentioned before, just try to take a magic marker, press on it a bit, and do a “B” on your face. It ain’t easy. The cheek keeps moving around. And that’s when you’re staying still.

Her story doesn’t add up. Not at all.

Why not?

JetBoy on October 23, 2008 at 8:24 PM

Look at the comments over the last couple of weeks. More and more asinine comments. Like someone else hinted, scarily (word?) becoming the Conservative Daily Kos.

Let me preface this by saying that I’m skeptical as well.

However, if someone had a knife to my face, I’m not so sure I’d be thrashing around. In fact, I’d probably be frozen like a deer in the headlights.

That’s the first thing my wife said too. She doesn’t known the players besides The One, so I asked her to guess which, if either, was his Dad. She said, “they guy on the Left. They have the same upper lip”

Could not agree more, and I would add other blogs to that as well. You can spot the first time voters on here easy, I assume it is related being born of the ADD/ridlin generation?

Notice how they both have the same long ridge down the center of their upper lips? Blow up the Pic of The One to see it. The wife spotted it right away.

I don’t know if it’s true, but he looks more like D than O.

TheBigOldDog on October 23, 2008 at 9:12 PM

sheesh:

Believe it or not the fact that Michelle is suspicious does not mean a lot to me. Michelle thought that Bush was going to sell our ports to AlQaida too.

I don’t know what happened at that ATM, but I am not comfortable with attacking the victim right off the bat.

If he grabbed her from behind, say by the hair, he could hold her face pretty still just be jerking her head back.

I’ll second that!

Or maybe it’ll be third, fourth or fifth it in the time it takes me to type this out….

This is a poltical stunt…why else would they already talk to her. I hope not but it smells funny.

Is anyone listening to Geraldine Ferraro and Alan Colmes interview. They both make me sick.

They are so clearly worried about Sarah Palin.

Oink on October 23, 2008 at 9:35 PM

Kind of sick to go over to MM “other” site and see her making a trial if she faked it or not.

Mirrors? Come on.

Ho about returning to the scene of the crime and just walking up to her lying on the ground, feet away from me, and start carving away. It would make it an upside down B.

May have to re-think coming to MM sites.

WoosterOh on October 23, 2008 at 9:35 PM

Yet another Obama robber, “spreading the wealth around”.

Tzetzes on October 23, 2008 at 9:36 PM

Oink on October 23, 2008 at 9:35 PM

Geraldine just doesn’t get it. They’re busy telling themselves (elites) that Sarah “just doesn’t get it,” and they’re actually the ones that don’t get it.

OMG, I pray, PRAY, PRAY that McCain wins and those a-holes eat crow.

Oink on October 23, 2008 at 9:38 PM

You know this is why reps lose. Our party is HANDED on a SLIVER PLATER a story that could change elections in VA, NC, GA, OH and PA and instead of running with it. Our media leaders like ED, ALLAH, MICHELLE< and ACE question it and give the dems an attack point to use. I will ask this once ARE YOU PEOPLE TRYING TO LOSE THIS ELECTION. You have the birth cerificate troubles, the failure to release college transscript, Ayers, Wright, this hate crime, election fraud in money and votes and McCain and you idiots in the media question them? You think KOS waited around to make charges against Gov Palin? No they threw everything at the wall before it was proven or disproven. They didn’t sit around and look at their navels. The election is in 12 days people. This case will not be proven or disproven before then. You role with the army you have. This is news. I happen to think it is real. But regradless it is news. why do we give the dems the benifit of the doubt. they will never give it to us. Has my party under McCain become a party of pus*ies?

unseen on October 23, 2008 at 9:39 PM

Wow. The robber sure was gentle with the knife. It’s almost as if he didn’t want to draw blood. So this idiot got scratched up by a complete stranger’s KNIFE and refused medical attention? Didn’t want a tetanus shot? I guess she trusts that the robber kept his robbin’ knife nice n’ clean.

What a joke. This is a retarded hoax.

The truth will come out under a bit more scrutiny and she’ll go back to being a nobody.

Next.

Nope. It has become a party of parties. No focus. No direction. No leader. No troops willing to stay in the foxhole.
