McCain supporter maimed for her politics by robber; Update: Hoax

posted at 4:50 pm on October 23, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Update: Ashley Todd perpetrated a hoax.  We have that in a separate post by Allahpundit.  Be sure to read that in detail, but my overall reaction is that Todd is a very, very disturbed young woman.  — Ed

Original post:

A 20-year-old woman got robbed at an ATM in a Pittsburgh suburb, and normally that would not make national news.  However, her robber wanted to make a political statement as well.  After seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car, he beat the woman and scratched a “B” into her face:

A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.

This is a horrible story, and if it happened as alleged, I hope the man gets life in prison for both the armed robbery and the maiming.  Our prayers go to the woman, who refused medical treatment at the scene, as well as our hopes for a quick and complete recovery.

However, despite the comments popping up in other threads, I don’t think this says anything terribly significant about the election or either candidate.  Criminals aren’t known for their kindness, temperament, or intellect, and this particular criminal sounds like he’s a couple of bricks short of a load even for that crowd.  The initial crime had nothing to do with politics at all, so it’s not an example of partisan thuggery as one would expect some to paint it.

I’m sure that the two campaigns will be sure to reach out to the woman.  Someone will undoubtedly press the Obama campaign for a reaction, and will get the obligatory and emphatic denunciation that everyone would expect.  We have many more important issues to debate, and many more cogent reasons to oppose Barack Obama than the offhand cruelty of one criminal in Pittsburgh.

Update (AP): Good points from Ace. I notice that Drudge has quietly moved the story from blaring red-font banner to upper-lefthand teaser.

Update II (Ed): The woman who was attacked has identified herself as Ashley Todd, who is a College Republican field representative.  Here’s the photo:

It looks like Ashley did get beaten pretty badly, and she does have a ‘B’ scratched into her cheek.  It’s not a rumor.  Hopefully, we’ll get more from the local media as the story develops, or from Ashley herself.

Update III: I agree with people in the comments who say that the beating and maiming were political, and obviously so.  Ashley wouldn’t have that wound on her face otherwise.  What I am saying is that it’s unfair to generalize about Obama supporters based on the actions of one nut.

I would also agree, though, that the media didn’t have any problems doing the same thing to the McCain campaign based on one comment allegedly yelled at a rally, and for that matter, neither did Barack Obama during the last debate.

Update IV: Let’s remember that Bill Gwatney got shot to death in an Arkansas Democratic HQ in June.  It’s dangerous to generalize on partisan lines when discussing one disturbing act of violence.

Update V: Some people are already saying “hoax”; I think that’s unlikely (but still possible).  Thanks to the local news report, we know the attack occurred.  Not too many young women would scar their faces just to create a political hoax.  As for the reversed/upside-down B, all I can tell you is that I got this from a source close to Ashley, who assured me that she wanted to go public (it was also on her Twitter page) and that the photo came directly from her.  It could have gotten reversed on the computer, or the attacker may have had her on the ground with her head upside-down in relation to his.

Update VI: Here’s a video report on the attack from KDKA-TV (via the Newsbusters).

Update VII: I spoke with two executives at the College Republicans on the record about this story.  Charlie Smith, the National Chair, and Ethan Eilon, the Executive Director, both say the photo is legitimate and that it came from Ashley Todd, the victim in this case.  The attack began at 8:50 pm ET and Ashley called the police at 9:30 PM ET. Initially, she was robbed, ran away after the robbery, and the robber followed her to her car.  At that point, he became enraged at the bumper sticker and began beating her and scratched the ‘B’ into her face. Ashley went to the hospital early this morning after initially refusing medical attention last night, and had an MRI and/or a CAT scan. Doctors believe her cheek will heal fully.

Eilon spoke with her personally today about the incident and confirmed the above with me.  He first met Ashley in June, when she came to DC for training with the College Republicans.  She works for them as a contract employee.  She does not work for the McCain campaign.  Both Eilon and Smith expressed revulsion over an attack on a young woman just getting involved in politics, but they consider this the act of a lone lunatic.

I’m not going to blame people for keeping a healthy skepticism on this case, but so far, the two media reports appear to check out.

Update VIII: The police want to administer a polygraph:

Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.

But:

“We are treating this as a credible report,” he said.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

Actually, here’s some of the report that’s linked to the story. No mention of the “I will teach you a lesson” (unless that’s in another report). Also, interestingly, Todd refused medical treatment, which seems a bit odd to me.

————————————————–

Police spokeswoman Diane Richard said the robber took $60 from Todd, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.

The Tribune reported that Todd, who isn’t familiar with the area, drove to a friend’s house and together the pair located the Citizens Bank ATM at Liberty and Pearl where the attack happened and called police.

Todd declined to comment to the Tribune. Friends said she is in Pittsburgh volunteering for the McCain-Palin campaign.

Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank’s surveillance cameras.

No, I’m taking a number of reported cases of assault on McCain supporters, all of which due to their politics. Some have been posted or linked to on this site, and Ace of Spades’ site, in recent days and weeks.

However, you still allude to the idea of exercising your second amendment right (arming yourself) and knowing self defense laws.

So you’re an intellectually dishonest little douchebag who can go have a bowl of Kellogg’s Broken Glass and Nails, or else you’re incredibly dense as I posted another article about someone shooting at a Republican political volunteer’s house with a pellet gun in this very same thread.

Either way, please, fill your bathtub with gasoline, get in, and play with some matches.

There’s a reason why the media is working overtime; they know Obama hasn’t locked this up yet. Obama is trying to put out the best spin possible, already planning his victory rally, he’s inevitable, etc. Also the MSM polls are set up so that if Mac wins, it’s b/c of racism.

I wouldn’t say I’m an expert, but I do have some experience in criminal law. “Branding” seems a bit exotic for a random street crime. I could be wrong, of course, but the “B” seems a trifle too creative and, frankly, media-oriented.

Kenya was included in Mesopothamia, included in the Old Roman Empire. Thus, origin of the anti-christ, “from” The Old Roman Empire.

Otherwise, Obama’s a slug, about that I agree.

Last election, I went to Costco on Nov. 5th and I was wearing a flag-lapel pin and it caused a few “jump backs” after obvious Liberals there eyed it on my clothing.

I have no doubt if McCain had had told is followers to “get in [the opposition's] faces” and had accused The Messiah of running a vicious campaign, the media would be shouting it from the rooftops.

And I shudder to think of the headlines on the campaign-worker attack if she’d been out working for Obama….

Republican HQ Manager’s Home Shot Up Over McCain Signs [Florida]
Local 6 News Orlando ^ | 10/23/08 | Staff

Posted on Thursday, October 23, 2008 8:46:31 AM by PajamaTruthMafia

LONGWOOD, Fla. — The home of a Central Florida Republican headquarters manager was shot up and damaged over his support of Sen. John McCain, the man told police.

Rog Coverely said several pellets pierced his Longwood home. Coverely showed several spiderwebbed-holes in the front windows of his home.

The Republican manager said he is convinced he was targeted because of new McCain signs he added around his home.

“All I can tell you is this, I have a very good relationship with my neighbors,” Coverely said. “I mow my lawn. The only thing that has changed is I have two McCain signs in my front yard.”

Coverely said he has taken about 300 calls concerning stolen or vandalized McCain signs in the area.

“It says this campaign is getting vicious,” Coverely said.

Coverely said it appears Democrats are becoming more aggressive in the county.

“I wouldn’t say slipping but I would say the Democrats have become far more aggressive in Seminole County because it is such a heavy Republican area,” Coverely said.

Local 6 has learned that the attorney general’s office is getting involved in area investigation and has asked to see police reports of sign vandalism and theft.

Meanwhile, McCain will be in Florida Thursday.

The Republican presidential nominee is speaking at Allstar Building Materials in Ormond Beach. Later he’ll be in Sarasota for a “Joe the Plumber” bus tour rally at Robarts Arena.

Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.

I don’t think it’s likely that she took this photo of herself in a mirror. Try to do it yourself: It’s incredible awkward.

Couple of things about the photo: There are two bright pinpoints of light in her eyes (as from a flash). The shadows of her hair are sharp on the wall behind her, which means she is standing very close to the wall. There is no room behind her as there would be if she was standing in front of a mirror.

Also, look at the nose. It has a little tilt to one side. Now look at her “before picture“.

The only place where there was truly no adversity was in my church (which, btw, is just baout 40% white, 40% black, 20% other races.) Anyway, in the last 6 months especially, I get an undertone of animosity from Obama supporters in the grocery store and fast food places. One lady even walked right up to me and said “I hate white folks.” to which I replied “That’s really your problem, not mine” but it was scary because her intent was to intimidate me. She told me “it’s GONNA be your problem” and walked away. My point is, it WASN’T like that before Obama. He is setting race relations back 20 years. Everywhere except for my church, thank goodness. That is all the same, except nobody talks politics anymore that is.

a cappella:

What will forensics tell you? If people refuse to believe the woman the forensics will mean nothing. Why she might have had an accomplice with a learning disability and he made the B backward…the list of possibilities goes on.

But hey, I have an idea. Let’s make her take a lie detector test!

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 6:25 PM

I read it on the internet so I know it must be true. I think Ed’s approach is best. Find some corroborating witnesses if possible, flesh out the time frame chronology, check the wounds for the presence of material or markings which might exclude a knife, find out exactly when she declined medical attention, etc. Waiting for all the info and evaluating all possible scenarios/motives does NOT equate to calling her a liar. From the updates, it appears to be exactly as she described.

a capella on October 23, 2008 at 7:15 PM

I don’t think it’s likely that she took this photo of herself in a mirror. Try to do it yourself: It’s incredible awkward.

I’ve also been seeing reports (though I haven’t seen the reports myself) that the police confirmed seeing the mark on her right cheek.

If this were a photo from a mirror, the mark would be on her left cheek.

Be gentle. People are naturally skeptical. There have been so many examples of hoaxes (usually from the Left) that they naturally tend to disbelieve.

TheBigOldDog on October 23, 2008 at 7:16 PM

Google Morton Downey Jr. backwards swastika. Just something to keep in mind.

Jim Treacher on October 23, 2008 at 7:17 PM

I am amazed at how willing people are to disbelieve her. As if there were rules for muggings and somehow this one did not follow those rules or make sense. Since when does beating up a girl and robbing her make sense? Ever watched Cops?

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 7:13 PM

I think people have let the media and the Left get to them, and are exceptionally paranoid that a hoax is being thrown on us and that it’s going to blow up in our faces less than two weeks before election day. This campaign has gotten to everyone, but most especially to those of us who spend a lot of time on places like Hot Air and are heavily invested in political issues, and something like this – where at least I would think most people would normally be focusing on sending well-wishes to the woman – has them on edge, worried that if we allow ourselves to believe that this horrible thing actually happened it will suddenly be proved to be fake and we will suffer for it.

Read the thread, read the updates.

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 7:13 PM

My dad and my uncle are both retired cops. I could tell ya stories…

I’ve read the first 3 pages of comments. Good arguments for both sides. And I’m not quick to disbelieve her…just sayin’ it doesn’t quite add up. Again, the updates Ed posted say nothing of the actual incident…only mentions the photo.

You have to take into account too…What would it take to etch a perfect “B” into someone’s face? Try it with a crayon on your own face…the skin moves around, and keeping it taught is a challenge.

Thanks for sharing your story. Rightly or wrongly, AAs tend to think about race much, much more than any other group. Who knows what the next four years will bring.

IR-MN on October 23, 2008 at 7:20 PM

Has CNN done a piece checking out her wardrobe yet?

drjohn on October 23, 2008 at 7:20 PM

Check the headlines. The media is already going after her. She had to know this was going to happen after Joe the Plumber. If it’s a hoax she’s not a very bright “college student.”

TheBigOldDog on October 23, 2008 at 7:21 PM

Catch the jerk and go Jack Bauer on him.

JetBoy:

I was not there obviously. I am not sure, but I think she might have had a friend with her. And I don’t doubt cops are suspicious.

My point is that these things rarely add up. Attacks like this are inherently irrational and people often react to irrational events in a less than rational manner.

I have been in health care for years and I have taken care of a lot of people who have been hurt and it would amaze you how often they were carted off to a hospital worrying about their car or their purse or a lot of other things that had nothing to do with the events at hand.

No doubt you are right. And the truth is, there might be no way of proving it at all.

They would have had to peel me off that guy. Ever seen a guy get his ass kicked by a woman? A conservative woman, no less?

HornetSting on October 23, 2008 at 7:05 PM

Amen sister!

Oink on October 23, 2008 at 7:28 PM

Stand in front of a mirror and draw a B on your face with your finger. Your face isn’t a piece of paper. Just sayin’….

JadeNYU on October 23, 2008 at 7:15 PM

Ummm…. no. If the B is on her right cheek, then it will appear on the right side of the image if taken using a mirror. The B would be backward however. There will be no “left” to it.

Oink on October 23, 2008 at 7:30 PM

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 7:24 PM

I mean, dear gawd…I hope I, and everyone else who is skeptical, are wrong. Bad enough to think someone could actually do something like this attack…but worse to think it was a hoax.

Would you wait until “the next day” to see a doctor if some stranger attacked you on the street and carved your face?

It’s all in the “bumper sticker”. I’m no street robber…but these guys take the money and run. They don’t stick around.

JetBoy on October 23, 2008 at 7:33 PM

Oink on October 23, 2008 at 7:30 PM

You’re totally right.

The sad thing is that I thought that through thoroughly before I posted.

Re-orienting things in space is definitely not my strength. I’m the kid that has to constantly turn the map so that it’s always oriented the direction that I’m traveling.

*sigh*

Today I am “fail”.

JadeNYU on October 23, 2008 at 7:34 PM

Hey all, I LIVE in Pittsburgh, Bloomfield isnt the best of neighborhoods. This has been all over the local radio news updates, and they are all reporting it as factual. (I dont watch tv news, it all sucks toilet water). The radio reports said the guy followed her back to her car after robbing her, thats when it got violent.

mrfixit on October 23, 2008 at 7:34 PM

JetBoy on October 23, 2008 at 7:33 PM

I would with cuts that shallow. There’s nothing a doctor can do for her at that point.

Esthier on October 23, 2008 at 7:34 PM

Exactly. He’s not the anti-Christ…he’s not even the anti-Christ’s butt-wiper. He’s a slick politician, an opportunist, a Chicago thug looking to line his pockets, a Marxist/Leninist ideologue who wants to implement his “vision” of society while lining his pockets, and a bunch of other things. But the only thing supernatural about him are his big ears.

Matt Helm on October 23, 2008 at 6:45 PM

Well, you know, evil is banal. After all is said and done, it’s banal. Rejecting BO as a vehicle for evil isn’t laying any grand characteristics on the banal guy.

I laugh every time I read from one of BO’s enthusiasts as to his (so they preposterously allege) his “alpha” characteristics, and, my response to that is that “alpha”s don’t smoke crack cocaine, marijuana and drink themselves nutty with delusions of grandeur, using what looks to be consistently other people’s money his entire lifetime (but Obama has).

Thus, when the day is over, he could very well be a vehicle for ultimate doom, but, he’s still banal.

S on October 23, 2008 at 7:35 PM

If I had my son draw a B on my left cheek and I took a picture of it with my Photo Booth it would appear backwards on my right cheek – not saying I did that or anything……

ctmom on October 23, 2008 at 7:35 PM

And, on the radio reports, they arent saying that he “cut” her, but that he scratched her face in the shape of a “b”

mrfixit on October 23, 2008 at 7:36 PM

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 6:38 PM

You’re right, they would almost have to be stupid not to wait outside of camera range. I am not sure I don’t almost wish that this is an attention getting stunt. I think I would understand a lonely young woman away from home doing something stupid then a viscous Sen. Obama supporting criminal. Bless her heart either way.
