McCain supporter maimed for her politics by robber; Update: Hoax
posted at 4:50 pm on October 23, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Update: Ashley Todd perpetrated a hoax. We have that in a separate post by Allahpundit. Be sure to read that in detail, but my overall reaction is that Todd is a very, very disturbed young woman. — Ed
Original post:
A 20-year-old woman got robbed at an ATM in a Pittsburgh suburb, and normally that would not make national news. However, her robber wanted to make a political statement as well. After seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car, he beat the woman and scratched a “B” into her face:
A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.
Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.
Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.
This is a horrible story, and if it happened as alleged, I hope the man gets life in prison for both the armed robbery and the maiming. Our prayers go to the woman, who refused medical treatment at the scene, as well as our hopes for a quick and complete recovery.
However, despite the comments popping up in other threads, I don’t think this says anything terribly significant about the election or either candidate. Criminals aren’t known for their kindness, temperament, or intellect, and this particular criminal sounds like he’s a couple of bricks short of a load even for that crowd. The initial crime had nothing to do with politics at all, so it’s not an example of partisan thuggery as one would expect some to paint it.
I’m sure that the two campaigns will be sure to reach out to the woman. Someone will undoubtedly press the Obama campaign for a reaction, and will get the obligatory and emphatic denunciation that everyone would expect. We have many more important issues to debate, and many more cogent reasons to oppose Barack Obama than the offhand cruelty of one criminal in Pittsburgh.
Update (AP): Good points from Ace. I notice that Drudge has quietly moved the story from blaring red-font banner to upper-lefthand teaser.
Update II (Ed): The woman who was attacked has identified herself as Ashley Todd, who is a College Republican field representative. Here’s the photo:
It looks like Ashley did get beaten pretty badly, and she does have a ‘B’ scratched into her cheek. It’s not a rumor. Hopefully, we’ll get more from the local media as the story develops, or from Ashley herself.
Update III: I agree with people in the comments who say that the beating and maiming were political, and obviously so. Ashley wouldn’t have that wound on her face otherwise. What I am saying is that it’s unfair to generalize about Obama supporters based on the actions of one nut.
I would also agree, though, that the media didn’t have any problems doing the same thing to the McCain campaign based on one comment allegedly yelled at a rally, and for that matter, neither did Barack Obama during the last debate.
Update IV: Let’s remember that Bill Gwatney got shot to death in an Arkansas Democratic HQ in June. It’s dangerous to generalize on partisan lines when discussing one disturbing act of violence.
Update V: Some people are already saying “hoax”; I think that’s unlikely (but still possible). Thanks to the local news report, we know the attack occurred. Not too many young women would scar their faces just to create a political hoax. As for the reversed/upside-down B, all I can tell you is that I got this from a source close to Ashley, who assured me that she wanted to go public (it was also on her Twitter page) and that the photo came directly from her. It could have gotten reversed on the computer, or the attacker may have had her on the ground with her head upside-down in relation to his.
Update VI: Here’s a video report on the attack from KDKA-TV (via the Newsbusters).
Update VII: I spoke with two executives at the College Republicans on the record about this story. Charlie Smith, the National Chair, and Ethan Eilon, the Executive Director, both say the photo is legitimate and that it came from Ashley Todd, the victim in this case. The attack began at 8:50 pm ET and Ashley called the police at 9:30 PM ET. Initially, she was robbed, ran away after the robbery, and the robber followed her to her car. At that point, he became enraged at the bumper sticker and began beating her and scratched the ‘B’ into her face. Ashley went to the hospital early this morning after initially refusing medical attention last night, and had an MRI and/or a CAT scan. Doctors believe her cheek will heal fully.
Eilon spoke with her personally today about the incident and confirmed the above with me. He first met Ashley in June, when she came to DC for training with the College Republicans. She works for them as a contract employee. She does not work for the McCain campaign. Both Eilon and Smith expressed revulsion over an attack on a young woman just getting involved in politics, but they consider this the act of a lone lunatic.
I’m not going to blame people for keeping a healthy skepticism on this case, but so far, the two media reports appear to check out.
Update VIII: The police want to administer a polygraph:
Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.
But:
“We are treating this as a credible report,” he said.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

Another incident, Ed. In NYC a lady was standing on a street corner holding a McCain sign. She was attacked and hit across the face with the stick that held the sign. When caught, the attacker, an Obama supporter, said he just became so angry when he saw the McCain sign.

Do a search for VDARE and hate crime hoaxes. They are common. I used VDARE as a reference but AMREN or any of the race specialty sites will cover the faux hate crime scene. Now you can call me a racist instead of an Obama supporter.

You mean like Jena 6 and the fake noose on doors etc.
This was a hate crime until proven otherwise. Put that in your racist pipe and smoke it. Making excuses for a sick twisted individual because he happens to be black is a no go in my book. If this guy would have been white and carved into a black lady I would be saying the same thing. There is no place for hate in this country none.

I’m not looking to get into any shouting matches here, but there is another possibility I don’t like to consider. She may have well been robbed and beaten without being cut, went home, looked at herself in the mirror and decided to take advantage of opportunity. I guess it depends on how her call to the police went down,..whether she called them from the attack location or from home. However, since I don’t want to think this happened,..I’m waiting for forensics.

He wasn’t black he was plaid. I said so, and my word is as good as hers. Can you prove I’m wrong? My point is that you need to shut up, and wait for the story to be fleshed out. If all is on the square then McCain gets couple of points out of it, but if it’s not and this is a white woman stereotyping black males then it backfires, and maybe McCain loses a couple of points.

The anger is in their souls.
I just came from the Fayetteville NC Republican HQ “WITH MY TWO TICKETS TO THE McCAIN RALLY ON TUES”, sorry, I got a little excited. But, but I also got another sign for my yard, (no wire because they gave so many away they ran out) and a McCain/Palin bumper sticker which I bravely put on the bed of my little Chevy S10. In the ten minute drive to my home I had one middle finger and a tail-gater that then passed and cut sharply in from of me. And then because he was in such a hurry, he rode his brakes the next mile until I tried to pass him again. The effect was so immediate and decisive I just chuckled to myself.
But since I do see all the folks here already calling for calm or out-right deriding this young ladies claim, I’ll deny the trolls any snacks and just go ahead and ridicule myself for them.
1. You probably drive pretty badly and everyone does that to you anyway.
2. Are you sure having that sticker on your tailgate didn’t make you a little aggressive in your driving?
3. It was your uniform they were upset with, big difference.
4. You were inciting their behavior because it’s just so stupid to have a McCain Palin sticker since they’re going to lose anyway.
5. You’re a NEOCON Chimpy McHaliburton stooge who is too stupid to know that socialism will be good for this country and deserve being beaten within an inch of your life just for going to the Fayetteville Republican HQ.

I am leaving work, but Mark Levin just said the attack took place away from the camera on the ATM, maybe while she was getting into her car. We will know the details a bit better, it sounds like the police were on site so they would have noticed the B at the time. As to her eye not being swollen, doesn’t it depend on how soon after the attack that it took place, it might not swell immediately? Her cheek looks a bit bruised to me also. I understand people being skeptical but you have to admit that if this isn’t the real deal then we need to sympathize this young lady for a whole different reason. Driving home now don’t beat up on me too badly.

That “righteous wind is at our backs” thing was preposterously grotesque. Along the same lines, though, as Obama saying he’s “a Christian” who’se been attending a “Christian” “church” what with Wright the “pastor” in that context.

We have had one person arrested earlier in the year as he planned to assassinate Hillary. An you are right that other incidents have happened. But context and avoiding the knee jerk reactions two hours after the news has broken does have its positive points.
When it is not considered it tends to feed into more violence.

The Political Candidate Character from The Dead Zone (Martin Sheen) comes to mind to me, in this sense. He swept the nation with all charismatic speech and promises but was as evil as the day was long and used thugs to do his bidding. OB is a thug and is being followed by thugs and it scares me for our country that the media is so scared that their guy will lose because of their coverage, they will report none of the “questionable” aspects of his words, his action and the actions of his followers, his background or his plans and lies about his plans. But Sarah’s Palins wardrobe is front page news and so relevant that Keith Schuster was almost spitting on himself today reporting about it.

According to the report, he said “You support McCain? I will teach you a lesson” as he was carving the B into her face.
Short of murder, the worse the crime is against a woman, the less likely she is to be believed. If she had only been robbed, no problem, no doubt. No one would accuse her of faking it. But since she was knived and her face had a B carved in it, she’s a liar and making it up because she did it herself. If she’d been raped, she’d have been asking for it or consented.
But a reporter hears “kill him” at a rally and it’s fodder for DAYS, yet no other single person heard it.
This gets NO attention because a white woman was brutalized by a black man.
Welcome to the logical conclusion of living in a PC world. The Obama Thugocracy cometh. Are they the ones we’ve been waiting for?

Personally I see nothing supernatural about him, evil or otherwise, I just see a politician who either knows far too well how to pull the right strings or has someone pulling them for him.

That’s how I first learned about it. I signed up that day for the instant updates from Culberson, et all.
And just today I learned about this awesome little widget for my desktop that posts twitters from everyone I follow.

Cindy:
It could be that this guy has robbed people at this place before and has learned to stay out of the way of the cameras. Criminals are not always stupid. So, the fact that it is not on camera is not really all that surprising.

Grue:
Yes, someone is behind this guy, that is for sure.

Grue, yes, what I had in mind…
With a link this time, so others will understand the reference:
20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness;
Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
And clever in their own sight!

Maybe, but people are passionate about these things. Overreacting is the most normal reaction to something like this.
But honestly, I generally think this is all stupid but I’m even a little horrified at this. To actually carve a B on her face, that’s brutal.
There’s no way in hell I’ll advertise my politics to strangers even if this story is complete bull.
Good point.

I listen to WFNC here in Fayetteville and the Obama caller almost always call him Barack. Never Senator or Senator Obama or Obama. They say Barack.
Jus sayin

But that wasn’t politically motivated, IIRC
