McCain supporter maimed for her politics by robber; Update: Hoax

posted at 4:50 pm on October 23, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Update: Ashley Todd perpetrated a hoax.  We have that in a separate post by Allahpundit.  Be sure to read that in detail, but my overall reaction is that Todd is a very, very disturbed young woman.  — Ed

Original post:

A 20-year-old woman got robbed at an ATM in a Pittsburgh suburb, and normally that would not make national news.  However, her robber wanted to make a political statement as well.  After seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car, he beat the woman and scratched a “B” into her face:

A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.

This is a horrible story, and if it happened as alleged, I hope the man gets life in prison for both the armed robbery and the maiming.  Our prayers go to the woman, who refused medical treatment at the scene, as well as our hopes for a quick and complete recovery.

However, despite the comments popping up in other threads, I don’t think this says anything terribly significant about the election or either candidate.  Criminals aren’t known for their kindness, temperament, or intellect, and this particular criminal sounds like he’s a couple of bricks short of a load even for that crowd.  The initial crime had nothing to do with politics at all, so it’s not an example of partisan thuggery as one would expect some to paint it.

I’m sure that the two campaigns will be sure to reach out to the woman.  Someone will undoubtedly press the Obama campaign for a reaction, and will get the obligatory and emphatic denunciation that everyone would expect.  We have many more important issues to debate, and many more cogent reasons to oppose Barack Obama than the offhand cruelty of one criminal in Pittsburgh.

Update (AP): Good points from Ace. I notice that Drudge has quietly moved the story from blaring red-font banner to upper-lefthand teaser.

Update II (Ed): The woman who was attacked has identified herself as Ashley Todd, who is a College Republican field representative.  Here’s the photo:

It looks like Ashley did get beaten pretty badly, and she does have a ‘B’ scratched into her cheek.  It’s not a rumor.  Hopefully, we’ll get more from the local media as the story develops, or from Ashley herself.

Update III: I agree with people in the comments who say that the beating and maiming were political, and obviously so.  Ashley wouldn’t have that wound on her face otherwise.  What I am saying is that it’s unfair to generalize about Obama supporters based on the actions of one nut.

I would also agree, though, that the media didn’t have any problems doing the same thing to the McCain campaign based on one comment allegedly yelled at a rally, and for that matter, neither did Barack Obama during the last debate.

Update IV: Let’s remember that Bill Gwatney got shot to death in an Arkansas Democratic HQ in June.  It’s dangerous to generalize on partisan lines when discussing one disturbing act of violence.

Update V: Some people are already saying “hoax”; I think that’s unlikely (but still possible).  Thanks to the local news report, we know the attack occurred.  Not too many young women would scar their faces just to create a political hoax.  As for the reversed/upside-down B, all I can tell you is that I got this from a source close to Ashley, who assured me that she wanted to go public (it was also on her Twitter page) and that the photo came directly from her.  It could have gotten reversed on the computer, or the attacker may have had her on the ground with her head upside-down in relation to his.

Update VI: Here’s a video report on the attack from KDKA-TV (via the Newsbusters).

Update VII: I spoke with two executives at the College Republicans on the record about this story.  Charlie Smith, the National Chair, and Ethan Eilon, the Executive Director, both say the photo is legitimate and that it came from Ashley Todd, the victim in this case.  The attack began at 8:50 pm ET and Ashley called the police at 9:30 PM ET. Initially, she was robbed, ran away after the robbery, and the robber followed her to her car.  At that point, he became enraged at the bumper sticker and began beating her and scratched the ‘B’ into her face. Ashley went to the hospital early this morning after initially refusing medical attention last night, and had an MRI and/or a CAT scan. Doctors believe her cheek will heal fully.

Eilon spoke with her personally today about the incident and confirmed the above with me.  He first met Ashley in June, when she came to DC for training with the College Republicans.  She works for them as a contract employee.  She does not work for the McCain campaign.  Both Eilon and Smith expressed revulsion over an attack on a young woman just getting involved in politics, but they consider this the act of a lone lunatic.

I’m not going to blame people for keeping a healthy skepticism on this case, but so far, the two media reports appear to check out.

Update VIII: The police want to administer a polygraph:

Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.

But:

“We are treating this as a credible report,” he said.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

Thank you for your expert medical opinion. Really, who cares about a woman’s face?

JustTruth101 on October 23, 2008 at 5:32 PM

I actually do care, and hope that she gets better. I actually have plenty of experience in medical fields, although I’m not a medical doctor (I’m a biochemist). That’s a significant amount of discoloration for this early in the process (the biliverdin apparent above the left eye showed up especially fast) and the “B” is little more than a deep scratch, most of which won’t even scab. In a couple of weeks, she’ll look fine – barring infection. That doesn’t take anything away from the injuries, but people should stop claiming that she could be disfigured for life.

What I am saying is that it’s unfair to generalize about Obama supporters based on the actions of one nut.

True about generalizing. But there is enough of this out there to cause concern. And Obama has been purposely stirring race tensions over the primaries and specially in the last couple of months. Democrat operatives like Carvile have warned us of dire consequences if Obama is up in the polls and ends up loosing the election.
My wife and I have seen enough troubling signs, including people waking by our house when the kids are playing outside and spiting on our McCain/Palin sign. For the safety of the family we have decided to remove our yard sign and bumper stickers. The risk is not just not worth it when we consider where we live and our young children. I just have no way of knowing how much further people will go than what we have already seen.

There’s no reason to be anything else. These things get heated, and sometimes people forget that, but they usually remember eventually.

Esthier on October 23, 2008 at 5:48 PM

I don’t think this says anything terribly significant about the election or either candidate

One thing that is being said is that one candidate has more criminals supporting him
which has been exacerbated by them being instructed to get in people’s faces.

snaggletoothie on October 23, 2008 at 5:48 PM

You notice the ‘B’ is backwards? This is not damning evidence, but it would seem that if someone was straddling her while she was on the ground to carve the ‘B’ then it wouldn’t be backward, but if she was looking in the mirror(and stupid) while doing it then it might be. It was, also, very nice of the guy to not actually slice the ‘B’ into her face as well, but instead scratch it so as not to do permanent damage.

Has the photo been reversed?
If not, I’m sure that the Obamites will be quick to claim that she did this to herself while looking in a mirror.

MarkTheGreat on October 23, 2008 at 5:01 PM

The fact that the B is backwards means nothing. If the woman was lying on the ground after being beaten, and the attacker was over her head, with the woman’s feet facing away from him when he carved, the B would look normal to the attacker, if such a moron could read.

So, what does B stand for? Barack?

Steve Z on October 23, 2008 at 5:52 PM

You know, I’d like to retract my previous observation. If you drag the photo into Photoshop and flip it horizontally it looks exactly like the kind of “B” that would be scratched into her left cheek instead of a backwards “B” in her right cheek. The photo may have gotten flopped around in some e-mail hiccup. I stand corrected and significantly less skeptical now.

robopope on October 23, 2008 at 5:52 PM

Funny thing is I had one guy friend that would never punch me in the arm, not even playfully, no matter how much I goaded him. He always maintained that guys should never ever punch ladies. I’m dating that guy now. ;)

JadeNYU on October 23, 2008 at 5:54 PM

She will probably not have a scar on her face for the rest of her life. In fact, the B will probably heal before the eye returns to normal. I’m not disputing that this is horrible (if true), but hyperbole doesn’t help anyone here.

Big S on October 23, 2008 at 5:23 PM

I understand your point, but she will have an emotional scar. Wanna’ place bets on whether she keeps that McCain sticker on her car?

Someone left a crazy note on my car in ‘04 at work — and that was just a beater Rav4. Now I have a brand new Eos. No stickers.

All of this intimidation stuff — which comes from white, upper middle class Obama supporters, too, not just black muggers — is killing democracy in this country.

When educated upper-middle class professionals feel perfectly comfortable ranting hatefully about Republicans, Bush, McCain, and Palin to their co-workers, how can we expect a mugger to behave with restraint when he sees a McCain sticker?

Governor Sarah Palin reportedly spoke with the victim by phone.

Meanwhile, late this afternooon, the Obama-Biden campaign released a statement, saying: “This is a horrendous act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.”

I think Obama supporters are a bunch of “not too bright freaks” anyway, so this just adds to my disgust of them.

It didn’t make the news, (even here) but there was a “dust-up” at the local Price Chopper last week-end, apparently one shopper, (McCain supporter) made a comment regarding another shoppers Obama shirt, and McCain supporter got shoved to the floor- they cleared it up, names were called and it was over. My point? It’s only the beginning- emotions are SO high over this election, and as long as the stakes keep being raised, it’s going to get even uglier.

Are you willing to go on your Obama websites, DU, Kos, HuffPo, et al and tell your fellows that this has to stop? Are you willing to denounce the acts of violence perpetrated by Obama supporters and other Democratic party operatives such as the vandalism of Senator Coleman’s house and the attack on that woman in New York City? Are you willing to tell your compatriots to stop the keying of cars, the stealing of signs, the vandalism of property–all in the name of your party leader?

If so, then good–do it. If not, then begone. To quote Oliver Cromwell, “You have been sat to long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!.”

To be even more fair to the one that wouldn’t punch, he is also fluent in 12 languages and plays an awesome set of Rock Band drums, so there’s more to him than just his gentlemanly ways.

JadeNYU on October 23, 2008 at 6:03 PM

anyone that defends this guy is a troll. or an Obama supporter. Repeating myself.

Anyone that could defend someone that craves on someones face, hits and kicks a women is beyond belongs in a mental hospital. This is sick sick hate crime.

What do you base any of that on? The truth is we don’t know anything yet, and this has just as much potential to backfire as it does to help.

FiveWAys:

I don’t know, I think unseen has a point. The willingness with which some people were willing to assume this was a hoax because the whole incident did not go down the way they personally envision mugging/assaults should go down seems a bit suspect to me.

Which is more likely? A man robs and beats and cuts a woman OR a young woman stages the attack, beats and cuts herself and makes a false police report.

And people are basing the latter on a backward B.

Oh, Jeez. I’ll condemn all politically-motivated crimes, sure. But I usually like to wait for some details before I break out the pitchforks and torches in any specific case.

Just got back from picking up the boys from school. When I left 1 hour ago there were only 3 or 4 posts up now over 300. Wow.

I just tried this. I stood in front of a mirror and drew a “B” on my check with an ink pen. It was backwards to my guys when they looked at it.

Let’s wait for it all to come out before going off half cocked is all I saying.

Over.

1GooDDaDDy on October 23, 2008 at 6:04 PM

Reading all the comments here about.. is the “B” self inflicted, what was the position of the perp when doing the injury, “Gee, never saw a black eye like that before” and other comments made me realize I wasn’t aware how many CSI experts there are on HA…. Oh wait… you folks watch CSI Miami, New York and what ever…… my bad. My point is, how about waiting for the facts to shake out before you Tawana Brawley her.

-Idiot Alex Jones almost assaults Michelle Malkin
-US Military recruitement offices are damaged
-Republican Coleman’s home and property is vandal
ized
-Sarah Palin e-mail is hacked
-Republican campaign vechicles are damaged
-Republican yard signs are constantly pilfred
-idiot moonbat anarchists constantly disrupted
the Republican Convention,

and the Liberal vandalism beat goes on and on!

Would both of the campaigns be making official press releases about this incident if they believed it to be a hoax?

How is she supposed to prove it if people refuse to take her word for it?

You sound so familiar.

When I was a kid, I was such a tomboy that boys were freaked out to see me dressed up. One kid said, “you look like a… a… a girl!”

Go figure.

12 languages though? Not bad.

You want to devel on Wright GOd Damn AmeriKKKA? you want to defend Obama “get in their face” tone? you want to sing the prasies of REV Phelfer? You want to discuss AL Sharpton and Jesse Jackson’s reaction to this HATE crime? Of course you don’t. This is sick and ther eis no defense for it. None.

Do a search for VDARE and hate crime hoaxes. They are common. I used VDARE as a reference but AMREN or any of the race specialty sites will cover the faux hate crime scene. Now you can call me a racist instead of an Obama supporter.

The other day a coworker said, “I want to see what you look like when you’re all dressed up…if it ever happens.”

The next day I brought in a photo of me all dressed up at a friend’s wedding and no one at work would believe it was the same person.

What can I say? I prefer being comfortable to turning heads.

I am so sorry this happened to you and I said my best friend was raped while we were in college and I could understand her NOT going to an ER or anywhere else for treatment. She is from TX and might want to go home and receive treatment there.

I think the girl is innocent until proven otherwise. Like I said in blurb, there is plenty of evidence that an Obama nut would do this. And I do not mean all Obama people are crazy, but there are more than enough out there that have been acting deranged in their support for Obama.

I will believe this is true until proven it is not.

I’m a pro photographer by career. It could also be that the image got flopped somehow, or as others have said the guy had her down and was at her head upside down.

Lots of questions to go around.

Wait, watch and see.

Over.

1GooDDaDDy on October 23, 2008 at 6:11 PM

Dumbass:

If he is standing over her with her feet facing away from him, that “B” would be in its correct dimension.

Jim M. on October 23, 2008 at 5:41 PM

There are few things more common – or more amusing – than the Internet phenomenon of someone calling somebody a “dumbass” right before they proceed to demonstrate that the “dumbass” is right and that they are the ones lack in basic intelligence.

Okay, Jim. Let’s try this slowly, since Limerick has already explained it half a dozen times in this thread:

On a piece of paper, write the letter “B.”

Now look at your paper. It’s a person’s head, lying on the ground, feet away from you. Their chin is above their hair, from your perspective, and you just wrote a correct “B” on their right cheek.

Now take your paper – still pretending its a person – and have the person stand up and face you.

Since that’s probably too complicated, do this: take your paper, lift the side closest to you straight up (that sides the top of the head), then let the other side fall. Now turn the paper (their face) towards you.

Tell us what you see, Sparky.

Yeah. I know. An upside down B. What most people would call a backwards B, since the shape is identical when its either backwards (mirror image) or upside down.

And when you figure it out, go apologize to Mark up there for calling him a dumbass.

Now slap yourself – hard – and accept my gratitude for my laugh of the day.

There is nothing funnier than what you just did. Dumbass.

Unseen are you a complete moron or just posing as one today?

Why don’t you actually read through the thread before you spout off and call people tolls. OK troll?

econavenger on October 23, 2008 at 6:12 PM

Hey, I’ve never been called a troll before. I don’t care for it. I am a grudging supporter of John McCain. That being said, I am entitled to my opinion. All I’m saying is that this does not pass the smell test and last I checked, I still have a right to say it.
I’m not sure whether I hope it’s true or that it’s false. I would hate to think that things have come to faking an injury, but I also hate the thought that someone would actually inflict this on a person because of their presidential choice. I admit it makes me rethink the McCain sign I have in my yard(my subdivision has been badgering me to remove because it violates the covenants but I won’t budge).
So again, I am not a troll.
