McCain supporter maimed for her politics by robber; Update: Hoax

Update: Ashley Todd perpetrated a hoax. We have that in a separate post by Allahpundit. Be sure to read that in detail, but my overall reaction is that Todd is a very, very disturbed young woman. — Ed
Original post:
A 20-year-old woman got robbed at an ATM in a Pittsburgh suburb, and normally that would not make national news. However, her robber wanted to make a political statement as well. After seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car, he beat the woman and scratched a “B” into her face:
A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.
Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.
Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.
This is a horrible story, and if it happened as alleged, I hope the man gets life in prison for both the armed robbery and the maiming. Our prayers go to the woman, who refused medical treatment at the scene, as well as our hopes for a quick and complete recovery.
However, despite the comments popping up in other threads, I don’t think this says anything terribly significant about the election or either candidate. Criminals aren’t known for their kindness, temperament, or intellect, and this particular criminal sounds like he’s a couple of bricks short of a load even for that crowd. The initial crime had nothing to do with politics at all, so it’s not an example of partisan thuggery as one would expect some to paint it.
I’m sure that the two campaigns will be sure to reach out to the woman. Someone will undoubtedly press the Obama campaign for a reaction, and will get the obligatory and emphatic denunciation that everyone would expect. We have many more important issues to debate, and many more cogent reasons to oppose Barack Obama than the offhand cruelty of one criminal in Pittsburgh.
Update (AP): Good points from Ace. I notice that Drudge has quietly moved the story from blaring red-font banner to upper-lefthand teaser.
Update II (Ed): The woman who was attacked has identified herself as Ashley Todd, who is a College Republican field representative. Here’s the photo:
It looks like Ashley did get beaten pretty badly, and she does have a ‘B’ scratched into her cheek. It’s not a rumor. Hopefully, we’ll get more from the local media as the story develops, or from Ashley herself.
Update III: I agree with people in the comments who say that the beating and maiming were political, and obviously so. Ashley wouldn’t have that wound on her face otherwise. What I am saying is that it’s unfair to generalize about Obama supporters based on the actions of one nut.
I would also agree, though, that the media didn’t have any problems doing the same thing to the McCain campaign based on one comment allegedly yelled at a rally, and for that matter, neither did Barack Obama during the last debate.
Update IV: Let’s remember that Bill Gwatney got shot to death in an Arkansas Democratic HQ in June. It’s dangerous to generalize on partisan lines when discussing one disturbing act of violence.
Update V: Some people are already saying “hoax”; I think that’s unlikely (but still possible). Thanks to the local news report, we know the attack occurred. Not too many young women would scar their faces just to create a political hoax. As for the reversed/upside-down B, all I can tell you is that I got this from a source close to Ashley, who assured me that she wanted to go public (it was also on her Twitter page) and that the photo came directly from her. It could have gotten reversed on the computer, or the attacker may have had her on the ground with her head upside-down in relation to his.
Update VI: Here’s a video report on the attack from KDKA-TV (via the Newsbusters).
Update VII: I spoke with two executives at the College Republicans on the record about this story. Charlie Smith, the National Chair, and Ethan Eilon, the Executive Director, both say the photo is legitimate and that it came from Ashley Todd, the victim in this case. The attack began at 8:50 pm ET and Ashley called the police at 9:30 PM ET. Initially, she was robbed, ran away after the robbery, and the robber followed her to her car. At that point, he became enraged at the bumper sticker and began beating her and scratched the ‘B’ into her face. Ashley went to the hospital early this morning after initially refusing medical attention last night, and had an MRI and/or a CAT scan. Doctors believe her cheek will heal fully.
Eilon spoke with her personally today about the incident and confirmed the above with me. He first met Ashley in June, when she came to DC for training with the College Republicans. She works for them as a contract employee. She does not work for the McCain campaign. Both Eilon and Smith expressed revulsion over an attack on a young woman just getting involved in politics, but they consider this the act of a lone lunatic.
I’m not going to blame people for keeping a healthy skepticism on this case, but so far, the two media reports appear to check out.
Update VIII: The police want to administer a polygraph:
Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.
But:
“We are treating this as a credible report,” he said.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

No one here takes you seriously. I hope you know that.

Something about this still seems funky. Why would the assailant carved the “B” backwards. It almost looks like the kind of thing you would do while looking into a mirror. And no knife I know of wielded by a man as large as described would do so little damage. This looks like it was tentatively scratch by someone who didn’t really want to feel any pain. Color me skeptical. Let’s give this one time to vet, okay?
robopope on October 23, 2008 at 5:23 PM
It is scary someone would do this. Too many sick bastards roaming around.
Obama wouldn’t want that woman armed to protect herself, as the NRA points out. Nor does he want mandatory prison sentences for these kind of criminals!!

My Gawd, there are more people here who believe Cartman received an alien anal probe then that this woman was attacked.
Limerick on October 23, 2008 at 5:23 PM
She will probably not have a scar on her face for the rest of her life. In fact, the B will probably heal before the eye returns to normal. I’m not disputing that this is horrible (if true), but hyperbole doesn’t help anyone here.

Then again I’m hardly a doctor, and I’ve only had one black eye myself.

How about domestic violence? There are plenty of ways to get a black eye.

THANK YOU, Y-Not! Have we become so cowed…so simpering…so cynical and jaded…that the first impulse of many is to assume that she is faking this? All right, it could be a hoax–Tawana Bradley and other incidents have left their mark on us–and yes, Ed, Ace, et al do have to be careful what they post, but still, some of us are treating her as more suspect than the perpetrator. By all means, let’s get to the bottom of this, but let’s, for now at least, take this lady at her word. She’s been attacked and injured.
And yes, it’s time for us to say NO to the violent and threatening intimidation carried out by Obama supporters and the left. It is time for this to end!
Now, as someone else pointed out, not all Obama supporters are guilty of this–a very good friend of mine is an Obama supporter–we just don’t discuss politics in order to maintain our friendship and he wouldn’t even think of doing something like this or permitting it to happen in his presence and if he were on the scene, he would have been the first to try to put a stop to it. But there are enough Obama supporters and Obama himself has not done anything to rein these people in–if anything, he’s given tacit consent for this behavior. This has to stop and and it has to stop NOW!

I understand that the actions of individual hooligans shouldn’t be representative of a parties candidate. However weren’t we told last week by the media that Palin should have done something about the “Rethuglicans” at her rallies? Even though that particular story about “kill him” has been deemed fabrication all the stories about such placed blame on the hatred ginned up by Palin at her rallies. I’m inclined to take their narrative and put it back on the media to say that the HATE Barrack Obama creates at his rallies follows his supporters home at places the population at large at risk of uncontrolled violence and physical maiming. Take this into account also with the McCain supporter who had his home shot up, or the person who had 4500 dollars worth of Damage down to his car for being in support of McCain.
It’s no wonder people on our side want to paint the nasty picture of the Democrat candidate based on his followers actions. Their candidate and his sycophants have already done that to ours. Tit for tat.

I’ve had quite a few black eyes in my life, and if you put ice on them, the swelling goes down, quickly sometimes. That being said, I’ve never had two that were the same, and the only thing that remained the same was the bruising (which wasn’t always black either).
I also cannot believe there are those who are saying this woman is a liar. These are bad times, and I think the woman’s lucky that she was able to walk away from this.

Anyone that makes excues for this, downplays this, or tries to say it isn’t true is a troll for Obama. there is no way anyone can justify this. None. Anyone that doesn’t think this could be true has not been paying attention to the hardcore base of Obama supports, The truth squads, the shutting down of free speech, shooting homes, spray painting. I’m not buying this yet. I’ll wait for the facts…..
The fact that the B doesn’t look like it was carved with a knife and that the attacker knew she was a campaign worker because he saw a bumper sticker on her car (how did he associate the car with her — it’s possible, but a little sketchy) leads me to doubt some of the claims too.
It is possible (perhaps not probable, but possible) that mark was made a random during the attack and someone noticed it looked like a backward B.
Tom_Shipley on October 23, 2008 at 5:32 PM
“I don’t think this says anything terribly significant about the election or either candidate. ”
haven’t read the comments yet, so someone else may have made this point:
I disagree with that, Ed. I think it makes a statement about the Obama campaign and it’s supporters. The chickens have come home to roost – this is just another step along the lines of the “Get in their faces”, the shots fired at the McCain campaign bus, everything that was done to Joe the Plumber, the theft of your campaign sign.
If you don’t agree with that, then answer this: do you think that there will be rioting by McCain supporters if Obama wins?
exhelodrvr on October 23, 2008 at 5:32 PM
It’s a backwards B. Why?
Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Pelayo on October 23, 2008 at 5:32 PM
Again, something else I’m familiar with.
I once fought a girl (there’s even a video) and got one incredible punch in on her.
She had a black eye in about an hour but no swelling.
Also, right before I got married, my husband was jumped by a small gang of likely drunk guys. Knowing he was about to get married, he didn’t fight back and simply protected his beautiful face.
There were no cuts or marks on his face but several on his head that you could barely see through his short hair; however, two days later, a black eye emerged, first in the eye closest to the bruise on his head, then the second one as well, just like what you see on her, the way the black eye is mostly on her right eye but is also creeping on her left eye.
Bruises can spread like that, but that’s not really something most people know and thus are very unlikely to fake.

DANGIT ED…. STOP WITH THE MORAL EQUIVALENCE.
I’m an Arkansan orginally for decades… Bill Gwatney was a GREAT man — but guess what? HE WAS NOT KILLED OVER PARTISAN LINES. the gwatneys owned car dealerships all over Central Ark and were influential in the community of Little Rock. Gwatney’s killer shot him allegedly because he lost a job, and he had issues… he wass NOT some republican that killed for sport.
Translation: CONSERVATIVES DON’T DO THIS. We don’t protest by disruption at other speakers’ rallies, we don’t spray blood on Chicago Catholics at Easter Mass, we don’t wear Sarah Palin is a c#$% t-shirts, we don’t kill people over politics.
The media tries to spin this into a “well both sides do it” ALL THE TIME. ANne Pressley, a young tv anchor in Arkansas, was robbed and beaten in her LR home a few days ago. LOoks like she’ll make it, and be back to normal…. but you know what the news said? The AP had a RIDICULOUS story that talked about it as “anchor who played a part in new ‘w’ movie attacked”. apparently, she played ann coulter in “W” for about 10 seconds on-screen…. so the msm tried to link this to “crazy repub”. what a SICKENING display! they don’t know this woman, they don’t care about her, this had NOTHING to do with politics and EVERYTHING to do with LR crime since Stodola got in as mayor… but no… we reach for ‘moral equivalence’

My best friend in college was raped. She did NOT want to go to the ER and we made her. I can see someone not going to get medical attention and especially a young 20 year old.
We have heard stories from the Hillary campaigners that have said they encountered some very tough stuff from the Obamatons. We read the story about the woman that was hit with her own McCain campaign sign. Just a few minutes ago on another site, a woman said the “c” word, yes the one used to describe Palin, was placed on her McCain/Palin bumper sticker.
Obama during the debate accused McCain of nutty audience members at rallies and no one once in the MSM reported the Secret Service found no evidence of wackos in the rally audience. If this story is fake, you can bet they will report THIS.
My understanding on one response on Aces was that the man robbed her, and then came back to physically hurt her when as he was walking away he saw her McCain/Palin bumper sticker.

The guy beat her – see her face?
She was likely knocked to the ground, and was there when he came back and did the handiwork.
This blame the victim bullshit is ridiculous.
And by the way, Ed, this is not “just one” – remember the incident last week when a woman was beaten in New York with a piece of wood from a McCain sign?
As for the Democrat official getting shot in Arkansas, I thought the perpetrator was a disgruntled employee. To put that incident in to this mix is disengenous at best. There was no political motive associated with that murder.

That was over a lost job that was not politically related.

McCain has called Ashley and her family to express condolences for this attack … FNC

I think you just skunked him, Grue.

It’s possible that you’re brain damaged. I’ll wait for more facts before I decide.

DUMBASS, upside down is what I said.
marklmail on October 23, 2008 at 5:42 PM
I think you’re confused about my intention. I was supporting Jade by explaining the circumstances behind Mr. Gwatney’s murder. I in no means meant to say that this attack was not politically motivated.
Slow down and read before attacking.

Nope. It was known immediately that it was a case of workplace violence. All the initial reports contained that fact.
TheBigOldDog on October 23, 2008 at 5:43 PM
No, he’s not. Just the other day he was being just as skeptical about Obama’s grandmother.
Ice would feel better on both parts. Bruises and cuts bring blood to the surface, which is what makes it so hot in the first place.

Thanks, Matt. BTW, I knew I was posting at Ed’s site, but I was mostly mad at Ace, but too mad to post there (yet). Ace is usually not cowed, but he sure blew his treatment of this one. When I calmed down, I went to his site (which you know has a policy of encouraging foul language) and called him a word for kitty cat.
I think women are reacting a little differently to this story than men, on average. I am not at all surprised that she refused treatment.

There is the possibility of a “copycat/revenge hoax” for Brawley and Duke etc, but someone that crazy would probably set up a fake rape with “Pig” carved in her stomach if she was going to play that game.
And if she did it, why a B (for bitch or Barack?) instead of the iconic “O” with rays of bloody sunshine on her face? The latter would be more creepy/devastating.
econavenger on October 23, 2008 at 5:43 PM
I’m tough as hell. No one should mess with me. I even goaded on a guy to punch me as hard as he could just to see what it would feel like.
I had that bruise for over a month. Coolest one I’ve ever had.
Esthier on October 23, 2008 at 5:44 PM
Doesn’t pass the smell test.

Yes. Take your astroturf and go somewhere else.

Hey, humping robots on the battlefield would be a distraction to the enemy. And entertaining. : )
Anna on October 23, 2008 at 5:41 PM
I cede the field to you, humping robots do have their uses.

Look at this beautiful face: perfect skin, unblemished, beaming, youthful.
Big S thinks a B carved into it will probably not last for life, so whatever.
He MUST be an Obama supporter. Sick.
