McCain supporter maimed for her politics by robber; Update: Hoax

Update: Ashley Todd perpetrated a hoax. We have that in a separate post by Allahpundit. Be sure to read that in detail, but my overall reaction is that Todd is a very, very disturbed young woman. — Ed
Original post:
A 20-year-old woman got robbed at an ATM in a Pittsburgh suburb, and normally that would not make national news. However, her robber wanted to make a political statement as well. After seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car, he beat the woman and scratched a “B” into her face:
A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.
Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.
Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.
This is a horrible story, and if it happened as alleged, I hope the man gets life in prison for both the armed robbery and the maiming. Our prayers go to the woman, who refused medical treatment at the scene, as well as our hopes for a quick and complete recovery.
However, despite the comments popping up in other threads, I don’t think this says anything terribly significant about the election or either candidate. Criminals aren’t known for their kindness, temperament, or intellect, and this particular criminal sounds like he’s a couple of bricks short of a load even for that crowd. The initial crime had nothing to do with politics at all, so it’s not an example of partisan thuggery as one would expect some to paint it.
I’m sure that the two campaigns will be sure to reach out to the woman. Someone will undoubtedly press the Obama campaign for a reaction, and will get the obligatory and emphatic denunciation that everyone would expect. We have many more important issues to debate, and many more cogent reasons to oppose Barack Obama than the offhand cruelty of one criminal in Pittsburgh.
Update (AP): Good points from Ace. I notice that Drudge has quietly moved the story from blaring red-font banner to upper-lefthand teaser.
Update II (Ed): The woman who was attacked has identified herself as Ashley Todd, who is a College Republican field representative. Here’s the photo:
It looks like Ashley did get beaten pretty badly, and she does have a ‘B’ scratched into her cheek. It’s not a rumor. Hopefully, we’ll get more from the local media as the story develops, or from Ashley herself.
Update III: I agree with people in the comments who say that the beating and maiming were political, and obviously so. Ashley wouldn’t have that wound on her face otherwise. What I am saying is that it’s unfair to generalize about Obama supporters based on the actions of one nut.
I would also agree, though, that the media didn’t have any problems doing the same thing to the McCain campaign based on one comment allegedly yelled at a rally, and for that matter, neither did Barack Obama during the last debate.
Update IV: Let’s remember that Bill Gwatney got shot to death in an Arkansas Democratic HQ in June. It’s dangerous to generalize on partisan lines when discussing one disturbing act of violence.
Update V: Some people are already saying “hoax”; I think that’s unlikely (but still possible). Thanks to the local news report, we know the attack occurred. Not too many young women would scar their faces just to create a political hoax. As for the reversed/upside-down B, all I can tell you is that I got this from a source close to Ashley, who assured me that she wanted to go public (it was also on her Twitter page) and that the photo came directly from her. It could have gotten reversed on the computer, or the attacker may have had her on the ground with her head upside-down in relation to his.
Update VI: Here’s a video report on the attack from KDKA-TV (via the Newsbusters).
Update VII: I spoke with two executives at the College Republicans on the record about this story. Charlie Smith, the National Chair, and Ethan Eilon, the Executive Director, both say the photo is legitimate and that it came from Ashley Todd, the victim in this case. The attack began at 8:50 pm ET and Ashley called the police at 9:30 PM ET. Initially, she was robbed, ran away after the robbery, and the robber followed her to her car. At that point, he became enraged at the bumper sticker and began beating her and scratched the ‘B’ into her face. Ashley went to the hospital early this morning after initially refusing medical attention last night, and had an MRI and/or a CAT scan. Doctors believe her cheek will heal fully.
Eilon spoke with her personally today about the incident and confirmed the above with me. He first met Ashley in June, when she came to DC for training with the College Republicans. She works for them as a contract employee. She does not work for the McCain campaign. Both Eilon and Smith expressed revulsion over an attack on a young woman just getting involved in politics, but they consider this the act of a lone lunatic.
I’m not going to blame people for keeping a healthy skepticism on this case, but so far, the two media reports appear to check out.
Update VIII: The police want to administer a polygraph:
Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.
But:
“We are treating this as a credible report,” he said.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

Which goes back to my ORIGINAL POINT that you should have reported the crime. When you keep this stuff to yourself, you put others at risk and you basically screw yourself up.
You should have gone to the cops if you were raped. That’s my point. The more women that do the better.
The Race Card on October 24, 2008 at 12:39 AM
I have doubts in both cases. I had doubts about the Duke “rape” and Ms. Magnum too. Sue me.
The Race Card on October 24, 2008 at 12:41 AM
The Race Card:
My claim is the truth. It happened. If you want to be an asshole and call a 57 year old woman who was raped when she was 18 a liar go right ahead. Big man.
Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 12:42 AM
The Race Card:
I had a my doubts about the Duke Rape case too, but not all rape cases are bogus and if you think they are you are a fool.
And I don’t know for sure what happened to this girl, but if it were not for the political implication in this I doubt if you would doubt her story. People get mugged and assaulted every day.
Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 12:44 AM
Once again I need to correct your assertion. the quote below is what prompted the comment about tinfoil. “Obama is evil I feel it” kind of theme.
And you think I’m all over the place – better have a chat with sister Unseen.

Those are professional and semi professional photos shot with professional cameras, strobes and the likes. She likely used a point and shoot that costs $200. When I go shoot an event I bring $7,000 worth of equipment and I would not shoot a photo of myself using a mirror either, but I take photos for a living.
She took a photo to preserve what happened.

The Race Card:
You moron. I was 18 years old. On a college campus far from home. I was hurt and alone and scared and there was no one to talk to or confide in or trust and they told me that they would say I wanted it. And they were all in a fraternity, they had money, they had connections, I was a scared 18 year old kid.
You have no right to lecture me. And even if I did report it some one like you would probably still call it a lie.
Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 12:48 AM
I don’t know if this is a hoax or not, but it’s at least plausible. The B on her face is not backwards, but upside down. Imagine for a moment that you were going to carve a letter on someone’s face. Do you think they would just hold still while you did it?
Of course not. You’d have to hold that person’s head still. Easy enough to do if you have help, but hard to do by yourself while keeping your hands free. So you’d probably knock her down and straddle her head with your knees, to keep your hands free for the carving. Which would make the letter upside down, just like this.
So not only is it possible the B would be upside down, it’s the most likely way for it to happen.

Bradky:
Maybe she really is concerned about Obama, that is her right, she does not need your doing your silly little tinfoil hat crap.
Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 12:50 AM
Nothing I said indicates I doubt “all rape cases.” And the political implications certainly strain the plausibiility but they are not the only reason this sounds strange.
People get a big rise out of stuff like this and being the center or attention. It’s easy to doubt some so-called “victims.” There are many reported crimes and alledged victims of which and whom I am suspicious.
Herein, I think I clearly expressed my suspicions about your own reported crime. Oh I forgot; you didn’t report it.
The Race Card on October 24, 2008 at 12:53 AM
I KNOW!!! If the roles were reversed then the media and republicans would be looking onto her tax records and finding out if all her paperwork is in order. I wonder if Ashley is even her first name….
twoarmman on October 24, 2008 at 12:55 AM
The Race Card:
She reported this and you still doubt it.
You are right, I did not report the rape to the police, therefore it is perfectly logical for you to assume that I am lying. After all, if I can not prove it happened almost 40 years after the fact then it must be a lie.
Would you believe me if I found and the friend who came to my aid and got a certified letter from him?
Or how about confessions from the men who assaulted me. Would that be sufficient?
Like I said, eff you.
Terrye on October 24, 2008 at 12:57 AM
What happened to this woman is horrible, but how badly it reflects on Obama is questionable. It would be one thing if Obama himself had mugged her and carved the B on her face. But we know better, for three reasons:
1) He’s in Hawaii
2) Obama only steals from those making over $ 250K a year
3) Obama would have carved an O, as in all his logos and advertising
Can you make the point that this reflects badly on Obama’s campaign? Sure. He’s pushed the theme of racism and class warfare, and has that creepy cult of personality going for him.
But given his millions of followers, it’s a very weak link.
Sure hope they catch the perp, though.
theregoestheneighborhood on October 24, 2008 at 12:58 AM
I doubt your story and hers for different reasons. The fact that you did not report your crime is not the only reason I don’t believe it. The fact that she did report hers is not the only reason I am more willing to believe her than you.
Keep your certified letter. You don’t need to convince me of anything. My doubts are immaterial to your safety and sanity.
If you are able to get confessions from the bastards you accused, then by all means do! I believe local law enforcement would be glad to arrest and hopefully get a convction for those guys.
Seems to me all this energy would have been better consumed back then when you say it all happened. See my point?

The Race Card on October 24, 2008 at 1:34 AM
Everyone points to this as an odd statement, and it is. 00:45:59 is actually 9:45:59PM EST. If the attacked happened at 9:00PM EST, then why not twitter that you are on the wrong side of Pittsburgh, heck, you just got mugged, had your faced scratched.
The photo is from 10:30AM. Looks like she just got out of the shower as her hair is wet. So those that say that she is too black around the eye, it is 13 hours later.
If she did not think it was such a big deal, got hit, had someone scratching at your face pissed you are a McCain supporter, but you are alive, only out $60.00, would you be OK with that? I would be thrilled.

NightmareOnKStreet on October 24, 2008 at 1:38 AM
The people you’re addressing are primarily made up of people who have never been through serious muggings or assaults and don’t understand the mix of emotions and chemical reactions a person goes through in a high-adrenaline situation. They’re telling someone what it’s like to be in space without ever having actually been there themselves. They’re driven either by narcissism or by fear of the situation happening to them and they are in denial. It’s pointless to try. They haven’t had the liberal mugged out of them yet, as it were.
MadisonConservative on October 24, 2008 at 1:41 AM
One last thing for you. She took the photo with her left hand, if it was shot looking into a mirror. The shadows show the camera was not directly in front of her, but off to the side.
So, she reaches up with her left hand, points it at the mirror, looks directly at the camera in the mirror, pop, inverted B.

A woman reveals a painful, horrible sexual attack. You call her “sexy”. Do you have a daughter, or a sister? What would you say to someone who spoke to them that way if they’d been raped?
NightmareOnKStreet on October 24, 2008 at 1:50 AM
Like I said before, I know there are circumstances under which you would exercise similar suspicions. I challenge you to reread her remarks and tell me she sounds truthful; she doesn’t.
My original point stands: Women who don’t report sexual assaults are not helping anybody. Terrye said she was one of those women. I responded.

People like you call people liars when you don’t know anything about it, because it makes you feel better about your pathetic life to challenge someone online because you have no life. The internet makes cowboys out of cowards, and that means you. You know what Race Card? You really should stop typing. I was assaulted more than a quarter century ago, and I’ve dealt with it and live a very happy, productive life, but it never really leaves you, even though I’ve coped. But reading the BS you are spewing in here tonight is, how shall I put it, is making the blood run just a little bit colder in my veins. There’s something wrong with you.
JustTruth101 on October 24, 2008 at 2:16 AM
I’ve been shot at, had guns drawn on me and been jumped in my life. I don’t need a vagina to be a crime victim.
In some instances I have had to overcome great skepticism when reporting crimes. If I got all butt-hurt every time a cop asked me “are you sure that’s how it happened” I’d be useless.
MadisonConservative, your promise to assault me is awesome. Like those who have come before you in this thread, I don’t believe you. But since Halloween is soon I’ll act scared.
The Race Card on October 24, 2008 at 2:20 AM
Hey, night, yeah, we see it the same way. Race Card is the kind of scum who lives and dies on the internet because in real life he either a) wouldn’t dare open his mouth and reveal how pathetic he really is, or b) would be stupid enough to share his opinions and as a result would instantly be ostracized for being such an a$$hole and no one in that circle would EVER speak to him again. He would simply be shunned. Too bad we don’t have the option to ignore (like in chat rooms) so we don’t even have to see his worthless comments.

NightmareOnKStreet on October 24, 2008 at 2:44 AM
The scratch appears to be steady and of consistent depth throughout. A knife in the hands of a shaky robber (or enraged one) would have been more crude than this.
Further, though the B is backwards, it’s well formed. If she were face down while her attacker scrawled on her cheek, the “B” would be a bit more choppy (unless he makes a living from blind carving).
Notice there are a few side scratches, but even those are again of the same depth. If she were scared (but told to lay still) I would expect there to be more “mistakes” on her face from her shuddering from the pain.
I don’t know about this. I wish her well, but something isn’t right.
Black Adam on October 24, 2008 at 2:45 AM
Yours is an absolutely valid position. If I held that view, I would be as virulent as you are with me.
We simply disagree about the responsibilities of crime victims. If she was raped and got HIV, Herpes or something else would it be OK if she kept that to herself too? It’s personal right?
Wrong. Her actions or inaction would thereby affect another person’s safety and health. Same can be said for silent criers who don’t share the details of their crimes with fellow citizens.
Terrye has every right to tell me “eff you.” She’s the only object of my scrutiny here. The rest of you are full of crap and sound like you’re arguing to earn Jesus points or something.

So Terrye tells of a painful experience when she was 18, and all you have to offer is that the story is phony, and it’s her own fault for not reporting it.
Look, if you don’t want to believe Terrye’s story, that’s your prerogative. But to call her story phony is to call her a liar, and there is no way you know her to be lying. What is lying is when you proclaim she’s a phony, when you know nothing of the sort. But maybe that logic is too hard for you.
So yes, you’re rude, crass, and insulting, and anyone who hears — or reads — it is entitled to call you on it. They have at least as much right to call you names as you have to call her a phony.
Most decent people don’t like to see someone attacked unfairly. No telling how many times I’ve wound up defending GWB because of unfair attacks on him. And it’s not like he can’t take care of himself.

different more “normal-looking” picture. Ashley may have just done a stupid (albeit female thing) in taking the other picture that everyone has run with it actually looks like you’d expect a knife wound to: a bit deeper, not “shiny” or “reddish”
Here’s a hint Ashley: When taking photos to document a crime
1.) Don’t wait til the next day (as it looks less serious)
2.) And for the love of God don’t slather yourself in makeup beforehand….it kinda obscures your injuries

Fuquay Steve on October 24, 2008 at 7:53 AM

Problem: Polygraphs are not reliable, and chronic liars and deceivers, living in a fabricated, distorted world within themselves, believing what they say is true, can beat the polygraph, and often do.

Terrye, and JustTruth,
Am very sorry you were attacked and I hope you can talk to a trusted someone more about any of the parts of what happened that you are still not over. As you can see, you have a lot of support on this board.
inviolet on October 24, 2008 at 8:21 AM
Well, since you’ve said in the past you value truth so highly…the truth is that there are only two possibilities here wrt Terrye.
One is that Terrye is not telling the truth. If that were true, you would be correct. If she lied, she will face her own “karma” for it whether or not anyone on this board challenges her. (Am not certain how it harms you or anyone else on this board, as Ashley Todd’s lie – if a lie – would, but “You Would Be RIGHT.”) Congratulations. I hope that makes you feel really good about yourself. You’re REALLY smart you know, and so awesome for figuring it out.
The other possibility is that Terrye IS telling the truth.
That would mean, you are not only calling a truthful, sexually-assaulted person a liar but further traumatizing her, nay, sexually harrassing her (”Sexy”-???) and causing who-knows-what further upset to her who, from the sound of it, isn’t healed from her experience. Not only that, but you’re continuing to be a total jerk not only to the chivalrous people coming to her defense, but to OTHER people who have told you they were assaulted (ie JustTruth101).
All because YOU wanted to make sure everyone knew YOU thought YOU had it ALL FIGURED OUT and were RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT.
I know which error I’d rather make.
You, sir, should be ashamed of yourself.
How’s that for “truth?”
inviolet on October 24, 2008 at 8:21 AM

I don’t remember the Democratic D.A. from North Carolina asking for a polygraph to verify her story against the Lacross players. Of course, if this were an Obama worker, you would see outrage at the suggestion of a polygraph.

Hell, law enforcement officials have already expressed concerns about the rioting that will occur if Obama wins. But that isn’t going to happen. He’s going to lose. I can only shudder to imagine how awful those riots will be.

I’ve talked to several gun store owners in the last week. Every single one of them has said they’ve had record customer numbers lately.

I hope for the truth of this matter eventually comes out. My comment is more about your endline:
Proof is proof. I think you meant “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary support”.

This is a no win incident. Either this child was viscously attacked or she did something very foolish to make herself the center of attention. All the “holes” people have found in her story I have found logical reasons to explain. The one thing that isn’t easy to explain, why after days of seeing the probe of life Joe the plumber has gotten, she would put a false story out to the world to make herself the source of universal ridicule. I am hoping that just this once, whatever the truth is, that the media can be discrete. This story, true or false, is not an indication of who we are.

Bruises look worse a day or two later. Photos taken immediately after the assault may not show the true extent of the injuries. I would take photos immediately and a day or two later when the bruises were most visible.

Weird. I don’t remember saying that before, but yeah I’m not even 5′4”.
Obama’s the one who needs to be told that. He’s the one who tried to pin these things on McCain. If that’s how he believes it should be, then that’s how it can be.
If this report is true, then that makes to reported cases of violence against McCain supporters because of their support for McCain.

I believe it, Madison. Folks are scared. We remember what happened in LA after the Rodney King verdict and we all have seen videos of the rioting that often occurs after a particular sports team wins or loses. No one wants to see their own property destroyed or their life endangered by a rabid mob. Let’s hope and pray that the destruction is averted.

Flashback: Remember Sarah Kreager? Victim of black on white racially motivated assault.
Prediction #1: Obamedia Phase-II White-wash will accuse Ashley Todd of “provoking” the assault.
Prediction #2: Copycat attacks will follow.
Watch it happen.

Most women don’t report their rapes or sexual assaults. They are far more common than you’d believe. Hell, I could tell you my own stories and the stories of close friends, but I’m not interested in being called a liar by you.
I get that you like to push people, but on this one you’ve gone too far. The reason to be skeptical of someone who claims she was raped is because someone else’s life is put in jeopardy with the accusation.
She didn’t report this rape to the police, so what are you defending by insulting her the way you have and calling her a liar? The sanctity of online blogs where you assume everyone is completely honest?
You don’t even know for a fact that Terrye is a she. Why give her the benefit of doubt there? Why not go ahead and call her a man?
Of course. That’s the second place rape victims are assaulted, in a court room. There’s a reason women don’t tell authorities.
Rape is not murder. There is a statute of limitations for rape in most states. She says she was 18 when it happened and is now in her 50s. Even if you believe she’s lying, surely you can do that math.

Um, more recently than that: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19352067/
Milwaukee has the wonderful “Juneteenth Festival” to complement the regular events like Summerfest, Irishfest, Italianfest and so on. Strangely enough, none of the regular events commonly has spikes in violent crime or riots afterwards. Juneteenth, on the other hand, made some neighborhoods look a hell of a lot like LA. Then again, this is the city that has constantly made racist criminals Michael McGee, and his identically named and tempered brood Michael McGee Jr., aldermen of the city.
Madison may be a liberal paradise, but I’d take it over Milwaukee 8 days a week and 13 months out of the year.

Pittsburgh Police want this to go away. Now that it’s so politicized, the truth will never be known. As for the alleged perpetrator, you can bet your a$$ that, if he does exist, he will never be caught. I live in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh Police never catch anybody. White families have been robbed, raped and plundered out of East Liberty, Homewood, Hazelwood, Allentown and countless other Pittsburgh neighborhoods for three generations. The city is as corrupt as Detroit. It is owned by the Democratic Party.

Exercise your constitutional right and arm yourself. The current range of attacks and intimidation more than warrant a weapon to protect yourself. Furthermore, it doesn’t appear that the local, state or federal authorities are doing a hell of a lot to protect those under attack.

As long as the robber didn’t yell “kill her,” everything is fine. And frankly I reject the title “robber” or “mugger”. He was just trying to “spread the wealth”.
LevStrauss on October 24, 2008 at 10:46 AM
My concern is that for someone in a total rage, they sure did have a steady hand to make that “B”. Why didn’t they do an “O”? That would have made more sense … I mean it’s McCain v. Obama not John v. Barack. Either way, this event is just creepy.

TRC, that’s a real ugly streak you’re showing.

I don’t particularly like Race Card, but man he seemed to have stepped into a pile of woman last night. It reminds me of something I heard once, the person said “Men generally care about the health and welfare of women and children, and women generally care about the health and welfare of women and children“. You fair, kind, gentle ladies may now disembowel me.
