McCain ad: “I am Joe”

posted at 11:30 am on October 23, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

This is a web ad that complements the TV ad Team McCain released yesterday. The 90-second ad has several people telling the camera how much they identify with Joe Wurzelbacher — and how much they resent redistributionist policies:

From the press release:

Today, McCain-Palin 2008 released its latest web ad, entitled “I am Joe.” The ad features Americans who submitted their homemade videos to the campaign telling their stories and how they are like “Joe the Plumber.” Like Joe in Ohio, people from across the country do not want to see their taxes increase as Barack Obama proposes. They don’t want a president who will “spread the wealth around” instead of creating new wealth and new opportunity. They don’t want a president who sees economic success, expansion and job creation as an excuse to increase taxes. They don’t want a president who will place a tax on the American dream.

Joe the Plumber has become the new Spartacus. (The press certainly provided a crucifixion, once his impact became apparent.) And it seems to be working, at least according to the AP and McClatchy. Spartacus II has begun driving voters back to McCain in Florida:

Make way Barack Obama and Sarah Palin — it looks like there’s another polling phenomenon in Florida: The Joe the Plumber Effect.

As he pounds Obama for telling America’s most famous handyman that he wants to ‘’spread the wealth around,” John McCain is improving his standing in Florida, with a Wednesday poll showing the Republican presidential candidate with a 1 percentage-point lead. …

Not only does the economic crisis — a benefit to Obama — no longer lead the news casts, McCain has finally seized on a pocketbook issue by using the plumber to talk taxes, welfare and socialism, said Mason-Dixon pollster Brad Coker.

It may not have happened by design, but McCain may have found an October Surprise in Joe Wurzelbacher. If so, McCain obviously intends to ride it all the way to November 4th.

Joe the Plumber is the first rhetorical weapon that has worked for McCain since the “Celebrity” and “The One” advertisements.

The “Imago Dei” showed its face prominently this election, manifesting through Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber(and McCain’s Heroism too). I loved the clip when Joe asked the media if ‘they were Christians’ in making a point.

Estimated Plumbers in US, according to US Department of Labor: 688,000

Add in spouses and family members who are voting age (4 per plumber – Mom, Dad, siblings): 2,752,000

Estimated plumbers and family of voting age: 3,440,000

That’s a big demographic you’ve offended Barry. Add that to the gun owners, church-goers, senior citizens and half the country that now fears an attack six months into your presidency and who knows, you’re advantage in the poll numbers might drop from 14% to 13%.

Not. Obama’s going to get creamed.

I will have closed my 2-year-old franchise business by the end of this month.

Employment was 4 at its “height” (with designs for heavy growth), but I got killed by the 3-month media-induced “economic crisis” leadup to this election.

I provided services to other small business owners on a contractual basis, but the business took a nose-dive because business owners did not want to sign any contracts. I couldn’t blame them. We all saw it coming with the election. The media HAD to kill the economy knowing it would help “change” the current Presidential party in office.

Being a new business (hard enough right there) it made no sense losing the cash flow, so I will be officially closed by October 30th.

The best thing for the economy would be a McCain win. If Barry is elected I think I may be looking at an all-cash-business as my next enterprise.

btw, I was counter-protesting the Leesburg VA Barry rally yesterday and there was a McCain supporter there, “Jim the realtor,” who was pwning those miserable Obamatron freaks as they made their way in to see their messiah.

…egads, man…don’t we believe in accidents anymore? Too many lawyers…too many Oliver Stone movies….

…maybe, just maybe, there are actually telegenic, articulate gals and guys out there, distributed at random, many with a command of the language and knowledge of the world around them sufficient to asking a simple question. This blog is proof of that…most of the time….

…I can assure you that, if Mr. Obama were foolish enough to bring his socialist backside and a sound man down my street, I’d give him a bloody earful. I tremble at the prospect of his doing the same thing anywhere near the neighborhoods some of our brother-bloggers call home.

…I’m not Joe the Plumber…he appears taller, is younger and is certainly much better looking….

…but the disrespect shown Joe is disrespect shown to all of us…the disrespect shown Gov. Palin is directed at all of us…the elites know peasants when they see them, and feel that we should all be back in the fields, backs bent and traps shut, where we belong.

…and, with that in mind, Joe is my brother….

This is my BIGGEST irk about Democrats and their financial viewpoint. Unless they personally benefit from a tax plan, they think it’s terrible, and they believe that if someone else benefits from it they should support it unconditionally. They don’t understand that some people don’t WANT to punish achievers, the successful, the people who make this country’s economy work.

That’s why conservatives want to cut taxes for EVERYONE.

Okay, let’s get something straight here. If you are a tradesman, all it takes is a bit of weather to give you a big salary boost. If you are a bodyshop owner, all it takes is a good hailstorm. If you fix air conditioners, it just takes a very hot summer. If you do any sort of construction, plumbing, or electrician work, all it takes is a destructive storm or flood. if you do foundation work in Texas, all it takes is a nice drought. Any one of these could push your business over 250K—for that year. The very next year may be slimmer, and the fat from the year before keeps you from having to lay anybody off.

crr6 on October 23, 2008 at 11:46 AM

…just exactly what is that supposed to mean?

…”we’re going to tax you sideways once you pass some imaginary boundary indicating success and prosperity, to ensure the prosperity of the ‘less fortunate’…as well as the less motivated, less educated, less plucky and ultimately less productive”….

…so, why would anyone want to profit beyond that boundary?

“Here’s how successful you can be. He’re where your ration of success ends and where your mandatory contribution to the success of others begins.”

…so, if you make less than $250K, you should shut up? It doesn’t pertain to you? You can’t be aspiring (as Joe admitted to doing) to make over that amount one day?

…or, more likely, it doesn’t concern you directly, so just go back to sleep. Your “betters” are looking after your interests.

What do firms and individuals often do with income in excess of $250K do with their dough? Often as not, they employ people. Even lawyers, even as base a specimin as John Edwards, need secretaries, researchers and other hangers-on (those with self-respect need not apply).

What percentage of jobs held today are in what we collectively and imprecisely refer to as “small business”? How many contractors, of whatever stripe, how many service firms, how many family firms and farms employing 2 or 3 or 4 people make over that imaginary line between “gettin’ by” and “raping the underclass”?

Fascism is all about a culture of crisis and class envy…and, as a fascist, Mr. Obama and his enablers in the press, entertainment and academia are keeping the pot boiling. If we were talking about Paris Hilton, with her pampered heiress life, her stupid little dog, her selfish little “needs” and her self-promoting ways were the one to be taxed punatively — and only her and people like her — we’d probably not see as much sympathy shown or as many hackles raised.

…the problem is that Ms. Hilton, aside from a few movie appearances and a recording or two, produces nothing…and even she employs people, sad bastards though they must be.

We’re supposed to deny sympathy to family businesses living on knife-edge-thin margins, employing folks, because they’ve managed their affairs and come up trumps? We’re then supposed to have “increased devotion”, as Mr. Lincoln would say, for those idlers who sit back, consume and consume, and produce nothing…just like Ms. Hilton is supposed to do?

…so, the unsympathetic folks who’ve scratched success from America’s flinty hide are supposed to pony up, and Barney Frank and legions of less honestly acquisitive and power-hungry morons are going to cut the checks.

…I’m all for it…if Joe and I get to pick who gets to cash ‘em….

Here is my repeat of why a plumber would make 250,000

A plumber does not earn $250,000 salary

A plumber who runs a plumbing business has to gross $250,000 to have an office and storage, equipment, (liability, vehicle, and health) insurance, trucks, a second plumber a couple helpers and a secretary, pay the CPA and the payroll company, and the double social security deposit for each employee.

In my state the rule of thumb is to pay a salary of $40K you have to gross $80K. Health insurance is over 600 a month for the worst. There are inventory taxes on the truck, computer, snakes and pumps.

$250,000 barely runs a tiny business

The Obama crowd is so out of the loop on making money instead of receiving checks they have not got a clue

I use to work for a famous Record Producer, He is Rep. He won’t be voting for BO. I made a hell of a lot of money. And I spent that money. When I decided to quit working in Disney Land. I realized that one must love his job. I never felt like I had accomplished much. Last 9 years I have accomplished more than I can imagine. Would be nice to make a lot more money. But the smiles and joy that my clients have. Makes me feel richer.

Oops, one must love their job! Sorry all grammar error

I take it that you approve of Obama’s plan then ;)

Obama knows best. We just earn the money, he’s the one best positioned to spend it wisely.

Good to see Tito again, that guy is tops!
And I sincerely doubt the tax increases would
actually start at $250k. That just doesn’t sound
‘Obama fair’ enough.

This can be easily edited to a FABULOUS one-minute ad, with 15-second follow-ups.

Go, TEAM JOHN!

The 90-second ad has several people telling the camera how much they identify with Joe Wurzelbacher — and how much they resent redistributionist policies

This line never fails to crack me up. When a conservative like Bush lowers taxes for the rich far more than for the middle class, it’s NEVER described as redistribution. Even when every major study over the last several years has concluded that Bush has accomplished a massive redistribution from the middle class to the rich. As Warren Buffet said, he and other guys who collect dividend checks as income never had it so good. Their tax rate has been fixed at 15%, with zero payroll taxes.

But talk about raising taxes on the rich back to Clinton era levels, it’s called wealth redistribution. Doesn’t anyone see the irony here?

The sad thing is that so many average working class people are completely fooled by this argument. Instead of trusting people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, people tend to believe the scions of the Walton and other inherited fortunes who also write big checks to Republican candidates. I can only feel sorry for these people- they really don’t have much of a future as long as they vote against their own economic self interests.

…as they vote against their own economic self interests.

bayam on October 23, 2008 at 6:24 PM

…pity the thick, gormless peasants…too stupid to know what’s good for ‘em….

…that’s why they can’t be trusted with democracy, and folks like Hillary should be guided to safe seats, and Obama should just be annointed and we’ll all just have to get over it.

…but, I’m glad that it amuses you.

Those masses have seen their economic situation decline steadily over the last 8 years. If you don’t understand that, then you’re living in a bubble.

Son just out of the Army – 27 mo in Iraq – now making 250K doing Intelligence work for a private contractor to the Army. Same job, better hours, 10x the pay. He is Joe the Plumber!

Hey, isn’t the Hispanic Construction Working guy the same one in that video confronting the reporter?

That’s pretty amazing. Altough your son isn’t quite Joe the Plumber, since Joe will earn $250 a year only in his dreams. I’m glad for your son, don’t know if I’m that glad as a taxpayer!

I note that a few of these people were foolish enough to give their full names.

Be careful, folks — the Acolytes of Obama will track you down.
