Video: French archive releases footage of McCain POW interview

posted at 9:35 pm on October 22, 2008 by Allahpundit

It was first broadcast in 1968; I’ve seen a few seconds of it in his ads, but never this much. Watch to the end. You’ll never forget it.

Go see what McCain critic Matt Welch got from the forces of Hope and Change for having the nerve to argue that McCain’s a hero.

Blowback

It’s disgusting to see this in the middle, on Drudge, and to have the One’s big stage being built blasted on the left. May it all be for naught.

Heh…it will be. Pride goeth before a fall.

ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 10:45 PM

The bottom line on McCain’s heroism:

We KNOW for a FACT that McCain’s character is NOT. FOR. SALE. Not at any price. Not to stop any amount of pain. He signed a piece of paper that harmed NO ONE. Big f’ing deal.

When he could have GONE HOME ahead of other men, he said NO. He stayed. When it mattered, HE WAS STRONG. In the face of torture, death, and no hope, HE STAYED.

Barrack Obama does not have the courage or the character to even take a stand on a vote! He is not in McCain’s league when it comes to character, experience, or integrity.

Truly Obama does not have the character in his entire FAMILY that McCain has in just one of his broken arms. Or the teeth they broke off at the gum line. Or the shoulders that were strung up.

And if the American people are stupid enough to vote for BO, they will get what’s coming to them.

McCain Palin will win if every one of us, in every battleground state, talk to every single person we can between now and the closing of the polls on 11/4.

It’s now or never time. Get busy.

For those believers out there (not Allah), please say an earnest prayer tonight for God to bless our country at this crossroads in our history. Please ask that His will be done and to give us the leader we need most at his time.

If this video doesn’t convince everyone of which candidate is best suited to be Commander in Chief of our Armed Services – I don’t know what will. I may not agree with this patriot’s politics but I certainly am indebted to him for guaranteeing my right to disagree. I’m voting McCain.

I was reading the posts that Mr. Welch endured after his “pro”McCain article. It never ceases to amaze me that someone will HAVE to bring up that Sen. McCain called Mrs. McCain the same word that they will wear on a tee shirt in public regarding Gov. Palin. Now I know that they all don’t condone it but why bring up a rumor when there are pictures of their folks behaving badly. Sorry, I am babbling.

Cindy Munford on October 22, 2008 at 11:09 PM

Hey Roger:

Good times….good times:

Waters has made his views about the 2008 United States Presidential election clear. During his concert appearance at the Coachella Festival, he released the trademark Pink Floyd inflatable pig into the air with the words “Don’t be led to the slaughter” written on one side, next to a cartoon of Uncle Sam holding meat cleavers. “Fear builds walls” was written on the pig’s other side and “Impeach Bush” on the pig’s behind. On the pig’s belly was Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama’s name with a check mark beside it.[13] Waters has referred to Hillary Clinton, another Democratic candidate, as “ghastly”.[14] During an interview on the subject of the 2008 Presidential election Waters also revealed his atheism, saying: “Please, God – I’m an atheist so maybe I shouldn’t be asking God – but let Barack Obama finally win the Democratic nomination and elect a person who seems to be not just enormously intelligent but also deeply humane and seems to have an imagination.

Sleep well *ss wipe. Your true colors are now exposed.

Ms. Munford, I shall take your advice to heart. This election has made everybody just a bit BUG EYED BAT SH*T CRAZY, and I admit I have become bipolar, swinging from either a deep blue funk/white hot rage to a cautious optimism.
Therefore I even amaze myself for the paternal protection I offer to a candidate I didn’t even support (think Fred!/Sarah!).
But, Pink Floyd Dude, don’t be flip about the extreme sacrifices on behalf of country. It’s really uncalled for. If you’re on this country’s side, I apologize. If you’re not don’t ever come here again.

Cindy,

One thing I find intolerable is disrespect for our military, particularly those, like McCain, who endured far more than any human should.

I remember Jane Fonda. And Bomber Billy Ayers. And the rest of the traitorous goons who wanted to destroy our country.

And I know, as you do, that many of the scum of the 60s are now lining up behind Osama Obama.

I will not sit quietly when someone like “Waters” shoots off his uninformed mouth.

I am convinced. My husband is a Vietnam Vet and he’s not one to hold a grudge but I don’t think Ms. Fonda will be on the Christmas card list in this lifetime. Sen. Obama has more than his fair share of creepy friends. I listened to an interview with Stanley Kurtz today and I wish Sen. McCain could talk to him about it. Sen. Obama’s friends have not changed their views, just their tactics. People should know and they aren’t being told.

The widow of the guy who recorded this is trying to get royalty money out of the mccain campaign. Her lawyers are hot on the trail.

My personal feeling is that mccain shouldn’t pay a dime — the guy has already made more than enough money off of mccain’s misery before he died. After all, it’s not like mccain signed a model release or anything. In fact, I think mccain should own the copyright.

But be prepared for some dmca takedowns. She’s pissed at youtube, too.

Cindy Munford on October 22, 2008 at 11:42 PM

My father served in the Navy during WWII and later the Army in Korea. He refused to talk about the unspeakably vile things he saw, but they clearly haunted him.

Having read details of McCain’s torture — such as breaking his teeth at the gum line, for starters — watching this video fills me with a sense of indebtedness so overwhelming that I cannot imagine how we as a country could ever repay such men.

At a minimum, their scars seen and unseen should not be campaign fodder. In 1992 Admiral Stockdale was mocked as McCain’s disabilities and temper are mocked in 2008. If we are very lucky, President McCain will help restore our national character and honor before it’s too late.

And to think, McCain could have gone home early. He could have left that world of pain, but didn’t, because it was the wrong thing to do. Character – in check. Integrity – impenetrable. Obama – doesn’t even have the courage to case a freaking vote, instead votes “present.”

McCain: battle-hardened, courageous experienced war hero who never took a penny in an earmark.

Obama: Latte sipping, present-voting, marxism loving, billion-dollars-in-3-years earmark taker liberal who’s never done a damn thing in his whole life that didn’t benefit himself.

The great majority of us can say “I am Joe the plumber” but very, very, very few can say “I am John McCain.” The honor of his integrity, character and sacrifice will be defended here against any slight great or small.

JustTruth101 on October 23, 2008 at 1:06 AM

It hurts to watch these musicians, whose music I adored, misunderstand or mischaracterize America. I learned to love America after I learned how it is the only country that protected property rights. McCain is no economic genius or ideologue. He nevertheless instinctively understands. Obama, for all his charisma, fails to. I wish, I wish, I wish McCain were black and Obama white.

We are witnessing an American tragedy and we conservatives must learn from this. Thank you HotAir for fighting the good fight.

So in that clip McCain says north vietnamese doctors saved his life and that he was treated well. Is that true?

My guess is he was forced to say it.

JustTruth101 on October 23, 2008 at 1:07 AM

He was (forced). I’ve read quite a bit of this history. His main VC torturer, nicknamed “The Cat” was standing at the foot of the bed watching the entire interview. There was a bit of a scuffle between the present VC and the French journalists right after this interview concluded. The VC wanted more sympathetic statements on film and the French said “we have all we need”.

In 4 days it will be exactly 41 years to the day that John McCain was shot down. I bet he doesn’t mention it but I hope someone does. He’s a Navy man and I was raised by one myself, so I get where he is coming from.

Did I ever tell you guys that my dad was a plank owner on the USS John S McCain (DDG 36)? When the fleet moved from Long Beach to San Diego in 1970-71, dependents were allowed to ride down to San Diego. As Dad was a SMC, I spent a lot of time climbing up and down ladders and running errands for the signal crew. What a blast! I never had as much fun as a child. I have a soft spot for the McCain’s even though John frustrates me to no end sometimes.

csdeven on October 23, 2008 at 1:20 AM

Here is the part that the lefties hate so much about McCain…win or lose he is McCain. He’s been there, done that, and doesn’t give a flying fornication if you care or not. He knows who he is and where he has been. I don’t agree with his all politics but the man IS a man, and then some.

Limerick on October 23, 2008 at 1:24 AM

Truly moving. And it makes a person feel small in comparison to what McCain has endured in his lifetime. The man is courageous and honorable and no one can ever take that away from him. He did something that Obama and his cronies will never be able to live up to. Obama should be thanking McCain for his service, not insulting his injuries.

baxtrice on October 23, 2008 at 1:27 AM

Here’s my post I left at Matt Welch’s site after reading it.

FU!!!!!
Since all of you liberal Aholes claim that we on the right are bitter, racist, etc., Let me vent a moment.
As a retired 20 year Navy Vet I am positive that John McCain is a hero. I would use him as a role model for my children any day, unlike Prez wannabe BO.
Anyone who defends his country in the military has my vote as a hero, especially all of those Viet Nam vets who all of you left-wing pussies spat on and called baby killers.
I am thoughly disgusted in all of you and would challenge any of you to go somewhere like Iran or Cuba or Venezuela and say the same things about their leaders and see what would happen.
But since you live in the USA and people like John McCain and myself have fought for your freedoms, you can say all of the crap you want without fear of retribution, even if you don’t deserve it.
I hope on Nov 5th all of you will sit down, shut up and refrain from crying “You stole the election”, after your candidate gets his ass whupped.

ic1redeye on October 23, 2008 at 1:33 AM

Go see what McCain critic Matt Welch got from the forces of Hope and Change for having the nerve to argue that McCain’s a hero.

He’s getting a decent volume of the same thing from the forces of Reason in the comments.

O.T.: Do people really still rely on that “My wife is a c*nt” gag as a descriptor of McCain? If so it makes several people wearing anti-Palin shirts highly nuanced indeed.

mycowardice on October 23, 2008 at 1:05 AM

He had been beaten by irregular forces when he was fished from that lake even with the injuries he sustained after his jet was shot down. During his captivity he had been beaten more times than he can remember and tortured to within an inch of his life. But yes, he was provided care in the hospital which saved his life. I know where you’re going but don’t even try it. I mildly tolerate you because you’re not always rude like the rest of the trolls and because of trying to remain understanding of your alternate lifestyle. But don’t go where I think you’re going and try to understate what happened to his man in captivity.

Now, go back to your John Edwards shrine.

Interesting that this was in a French studio archive.

Ah, the French and Vietnam (Indochine…). You think Nam screwed up this country politically and culturally, you should take a look at France. France and the US have much more in common culturally than you’d think, then and now.

I’ve spent more than a few months over the past few years visiting and mostly taking the time to speak to the older generation of folks, (i.e. grew up in the late 50′s to 60′s). The majority attitude amoung the then working class that I spoke to was pretty much “we should have won, but our government allowed itself to be bullied by a small minority of leftists”. Sound familiar?

I also spoke to a lot of younger folks (some relatives, some not) and it was a complete waste of time…80% are hard core leftists who aren’t interested in a real political discussion or the consequences of “anti-globilization” or “anti-this or that”. They hate Sarkozy for no other reason than just hate (SDS?). Even the 20% “conservative” are only interested in greater State ecomony control to the greater glory of La France.

As an aside, for all the reputation of the French, I noticed (in Paris!) that the average Parisian is much much worse dressed than your average American. Hard to believe, but you gotta trust me on this. I was there again this summer, and taking the shuttle from CDG into Paris was about 1.5 hours and for the first time I noticed how truly shabby Parisians dress! Sure, plenty of hot ladies and such to break the pattern, but on the whole, pretty bad.

I wonder. What are the lefties gonna do if Obama wins? Keep on cheering? Keep on bashing Bush/Cheney, etc? An Obaama (plus Dem majority Congress/House) win would really dampen spirits over there considering their fuel really isn’t ideology but some kind of sick hatred of Republicans as some abstract concept. Without an advisary, they are lost (see “Conan the Barbarian” when James Earl Jones basically confronts Conan with this basic concept).

If McCain pulls this off, look for triple traffic at KOS, etc., more massive media onslaughts for the next 4+ years. What are these folks gonna do with there time if Obama wins?

SKYFOX on October 23, 2008 at 6:04 AM

McCain really is a hero. Not many people could do what he did. There have been a lot of heroes who are forgotten in all these wars. The nurses who stayed behind to guard their patients with nothing more than sidearms, the men who gave their lives for their comrades, and the people who endured the unspeakable with their spirits and their minds intact.

I don’t think Obama could do that. I think Obama would be looking for an angle to work. I don’t think he is radical in the way that Ayers is, or anti American in the way that Wright is, I just think he is opportunistic and self serving. The real Obama is all about him.

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 7:10 AM

I can’t help but wonder though, how curious it is that suddenly we have all these die-hard McCain supporters in the audience. You see, I was here supporting him during the primaries, when everybody was calling him Juan McCain and McShamnesty and all that crap. Just wondering, you know.

I separate John McCain the senator from John McCain the naval aviator. He was not my first choice to get the GOP nomination (nor was he my second nor my third). Every time he says “my friends,” he reminds me of Juan Hernandez. And I also have a beef with him ever since he voted in favor of that bailout bill.

But… you will never hear me speak ill of his military record.

Actually, the most radicalactivists among them will probably be some of the first to vanish. As the machine of socialism begins to consolidate its power, history indicates that no activists are tolerated. The gay rights, black power, code pink, Cindy Sheahan types are too prone to causing trouble for the Stalins and Maos of the world. Or maybe this is just a sort of poetic justice.

I agree to a point, but I think the reason they hates us is because we force them to look in the mirror and we stand in the way of their attempts to radicalize the country.

I think the answer to what they will do to keep busy if Obama wins is….

In their disturbed minds, there are lots of investigations that portent jail time for Chimpy McHaliburton and the Rove’s of the administration.

Always giving me the worst motives possible.

I had seen pictures from the footage but never realized that McCain had actually been interviewed. Somehow I thought the only thing he ever said was his name and rank.

The whole report is quite interesting. It’s yet another proof that wars are really .
