The silliness of the Saks scandal

Apparently, spending money on Sarah Palin’s outfits has become the latest kerfuffle on both sides of the aisle. The RNC spent around $150,000 in September on wardrobe and beauty supplies for its VP nominee in places like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. This has supposedly threatened Palin’s middle-class appeal and brought into question the GOP’s spending strategy for the campaign:
The Republican National Committee has spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.
According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.
The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.
The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.
Does this violate FEC regulations? Only if Palin intended on keeping the clothes — which she doesn’t. The RNC made clear that the outfits will go to charitable donations, and one might imagine that they could generate some hefty bids if placed for auction after the election. She won’t keep any of it, unless she buys it back from the RNC.
Mark Tapscott speaks for some on the Right who see this as a betrayal of middle-class values:
Every time I think the campaign professionals at the Republican National Committee can’t possibly do anything else to sink the party, they do something else that simply defies logical explanation. Like taking a candidate who epitomizes Middle American values and spending $150,000 to dress her up in Saks Fifth Avenue finery.
Apparently, they just couldn’t stand the thought of a GOP candidate for vice president actually wearing the same clothes on the campaign trail that she wears in real life. No, they had to go make her look like … one of them.
I think this is a bit overwrought. Everyone knew Palin would be in the media microscope, her every move undergoing scrutiny. Thanks to a ridiculous double standard, women who don’t dress well don’t get common-man brownie points — they get pilloried. Ask Katherine Harris what the press did to her after the 2000 election, ridiculing her make-up, hair, and clothing as a means of political crucifixion. The RNC understood the reality of the media environment and acted accordingly. (For that matter, take a look at what the media did to Hillary Clinton or to John Roberts’ children in the past on their clothing.)
Dressing nicely or shopping at Saks or Neiman-Marcus does not disqualify someone from the middle class. Professionals do not shop for their work wardrobes at Target or Wal-Mart, not even those from the middle class. Having sold clothing for a time myself, I understand the need to look one’s best when making a new impression, and a Sears pantsuit won’t work on the national-election level. With the Tanning Bed Media lying in wait for Palin, she needed to make the best impression possible.
Was this a good use of funds for the RNC? They have had more than a $100 million on hand between the campaign and the RNC in September. They spent around 0.15% of that on Palin’s wardrobe. It’s less than they’d pay for a single network-TV spot, and they’ll get more use out of it.
Jazz Shaw, no Palin apologist, is left scratching his head:
People spend what the can afford to spend on clothing. Personally, I tend to wait for a good sale from Joseph A. Banks when you can get a very nice men’s suit for two hundred dollars. But that’s because I’m not exactly made of money. Were I some sort of high powered CEO with a seven figure income, I’m sure that my suits would cost five grand and I’d have some Armani in the closet.
I have no idea what Sarah Palin spent on clothes when she was the Mayor of Wasilla, but now she is in the public spotlight and running for Vice President. She also strikes me as an attractive woman who cares about her appearance and probably likes to dress and look her best. The campaign obviously wants her to look her best for the media and is spending accordingly. They can afford to do it, so why wouldn’t they?
Exactly. We have much more to discuss than the working-class implications of buying an appropriate wardrobe for the job at hand. Middle-class values don’t start or end at the closet door.

Seriously, I no longer pay any attention to the Flatline Media’s stories on Governor Palin.
They are liars and have lost all credibility (what little they had).
Let’s roll.

Isn’t the real point that Sarah Palin is a true middle class person who doesn’t regularly shop at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, such that the GOP had to actually buy her this stuff? Unlike everyone else in this race on both sides, she actually IS one of “us.”
But never mind… The drive-by and/or tanning bed media is too busy helping Obama win the election to take a break from destroying Palin to recognize that basic fact.
Outlander on October 22, 2008 at 2:15 PM
I bet dollars to donuts most of the clothes purchased on those trips will never be worn and returned with tag intact. My guess is they sent a personal shopper to the stores and they bought several different sizes of the same outfits just in case.

I think the actual dollar amount is too high, but agree with Ed that it made sense to spend “a lot” of money on her appearance. The press would rip her to shreds if she looked cheap.
Also keep in mind that she is constantly on the move so she probably wears very little twice. She’s long gone before it comes back from the cleaners.

Why does it matter if someone else was buying the clothes for her to wear?

The charity auctions are a great idea! Maybe after he loses, Obama can donate a few hundred of his blue shirts-with-rolled-up-sleeves-to-show-he’s-a-workin’-man…to finally help Hillary ‘retire’ her campaign debt.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 22, 2008 at 2:19 PM
As I said in the other thread, she needed the appropriate clothes and she needed them immediately. There hardly was time to shop around for the best deal. The price of the clothes are in the range of what a female attorney or executive would pay (or at least one not starting out). And because she is in the public eye all day every day, she needs to look as presentable in the evening as she did in the a.m., therefore, she needs 2-3 changes of outfits a day.
Great idea!

ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 2:20 PM
This makes sense to me. The mere fact that the RNC had to go out and buy her these expensive clothes makes her seem that much more “one of us” because she didn’t already own that much. I know if I were suddenly thrust on the national stage, I wouldn’t be able to afford the cost of making myself look professional.

Honest to God, what is wrong with Michelle Malkin — a media figure who has undoubtedly benefited from hair, makeup and wardrobe consultants, not to mention probably a little Botox — that the RNC went and spent some money on getting Sarah Palin fitted out to campaign for the vice presidency??? If it was legal, what the hell is $150K (not even enough for a “rich” person according to BHO)of Party money to get her ready to appear on the trail, especially knowing that she is not a millionaire like the Clintons, Pelosi and everyone else in the campaign?
Ditto for Amanda Carpenter.

Yep. That’s why I never agreed with the attacks on Hillary’s pantsuits or “cankles.” (I admire that Gov. Palin wears skirts and she certainly looks terrific, but slacks are much more practical… there’s nothing wrong with being a practical campaigner.)
Now Michelle O! — well, I’ve been *ahem* informed by the media that she’s some kind of great beauty with a Princess Grace sense of style — that, I’ll gladly contradict by gleefully pointing out that most the dresses look like bad drapes.

I can not for the life of me understand why this is an issue. The msm has gone after every part of Sarah’s body, hair, glasses, lips, shoes, etc. Sarah is a lovely lady and if she wants to have a new outfit every few days, what’s the big deal? I would not want to wear the same dress everyday if I was in her position. If she didn’t have a new dress every few days, the msm would be saying how can she come out wearing the same dress?

remember folks, sharing an office with a domestic terrorist whose organization killed policemen and bombed the capitol is not important. having a preacher who teaches bigotry, racism, and hate is not important. having the RNC provide apparel for public events IS A GAME CHANGER.
Vincenzo on October 22, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Sarah Palin can reimburse the RNC for the campaign clothes from her salary as Vice President. If she doesn’t get pregnant again, she will probably fit into them for four years.
Steve Z on October 22, 2008 at 2:44 PM
If it wasn’t this, it would be something else. They should just dress her up in plastic bag from Target. If the media ever forgot at what they were supposed to aim, she would have that bullseye logo on her back to remind them.

Sarah can wear what she wants. I’m a professional, but not made of money, and I get my clothes from Target, Kohl’s and Dillard’s (and even Walmart!) and always on sale. I will never pay full price for an article of clothing, there’s too many more important things in my life.
No one I know, at any level, wears designer suits. In fact, the men in my family only have one suit, that’s all they need. Only lawyers wear suits to work everyday.

Heck, John Edwards and that slimeball in Florida (his name escapes me, I guess he has stayed way under the radar) gave away more to their mistresses and it didn’t get this much attention.

At 2:22 this afternoon on MSNBC, Mika Brzezinski and Mike Barnicle were interviewing Mike Duhaime from the McCain campaign concerning Palin’s lack of fitness to be the VP. When Duhaime confronted Mika with MSNBC’s failure to vet Biden’s comments as extensively as Palin’s, Mika protested that assertion by responding thus:
“Whoa, whoa, we, we definitely talk about Joe Biden’s comments, as much as it pains us, mysteriously we did.”
hahaha! She tried to extricate herself, but it was too late. Both Barnicle and Duhaime were laughing aloud.
I sent this to the tips email. I don’t know if this is anything more than what is usually said there. I just never watch MSNBC and was ROFLMAO when I heard it and thought I’d share with the group. There is a lot lost in the telling of it. Maybe someone can get the video. It’s precious. lol

How freaking ridiculous. I think she should dress well and look professional. God, this is such a non story. One that will backfire..AGAIN.

I wonder if we’re allowed to ask how much Katie Couric has spent on her’s this year. You don’t suppose they give her a clothing allowance do you? /sarc

RNC should really make this out to show that when you get one of the folks to run for Veep that you need to supply wardrobe. Just the fact that the Dems are multimillionaires and own expenses duds, just goes to show that this is the party of the real folks. I bet Joe the Plumber would need some duds too. Even O-Reilly gets his suits from a sponsor, and he’s a fat cat.
I was given a gift certificate for Joe Banks, thought I could get a couple of suits and wound up with just a sports jacket and pants. They have some amazing sales (I found that out after I got on their e-mail list).

I like the way she dresses. She has that ‘57 Chevy thing going on. Metallic colors on a blond is a lost art in fashion.
Anything is better than a large seat and pant suits.

This is where I get off the fashion bus. If you are successful, I can see spending more for clothing than if you are just making ends meet. There is a huge difference in the quality and fit of stuff that comes from clothing stores and the stuff on display at the local Wal-Mart (rule of thumb: don’t think you can shop for Armani in the same place you go to get your oil changed and your tires rotated). Nevertheless, spending thousands on clothes is needless excess no matter who you are or what you make.
