Philly columnist: Hey, we really are racists here in PA

I suspect that John McCain may be closing the gap in Pennsylvania, even without looking at the numbers. Why? Because more Keystone State figures keep talking about how racist their neighbors are. John Murtha accused his constituents of racism and then backed off to just call them rednecks. Now Philadelphia Daily News columnist John Baer picks up where Murtha left off:
I think McCain’s camp is banking on Pennsylvania’s “cracker factor.”
I think the campaign believes the Democratic view – expressed by Ed Rendell last winter and Jack Murtha last week (and James Carville 22 years ago) – that there are racist tendencies among Pennsylvania voters. …
So, if you take the most recent polling – an Allentown Morning Call poll Sunday is reflective of others and puts Obama 12 points up, 52-40 – I figure McCain’s folks figure, well, heck, that’s really only 7 points and since most polls have a 3-point margin of error, maybe just 4 points, and that puts us right in the game.
Meanwhile, McCain’s campaign, in TV ads and on the stump, is calling Obama’s tax- cut proposal a “government handout” and “welfare.” McCain yesterday said it’s “just another government giveaway.”
Whom do you think that’s aimed at?
Gee, I don’t know, John — maybe people who don’t want to keep funding redistributionist policies? Perhaps people who don’t want taxes increased? Taxpayers who want the approaching entitlement meltdown to get fixed before creating even more entitlements?
Or are those concepts just a little too complicated for your “sophisticated” noggin?
This is what happens when the supposedly post-racial Obama campaign explicitly exploits racism as a campaign tactic. Suddenly, every policy dispute becomes “racist”, even the most fundamental debates on the nature of government. McCain can’t even argue against a tax policy without being accused of pandering to the drooling rednecks Baer and Murtha suddenly see surrounding them.
I’ve warned about this for months. People like Baer and Murtha want to silence debate because they don’t have the answers for it. They need to hide their own ignorance and stupidity by making baseless accusations in hopes of declaring vast areas of public policy off limits for discussion. Quite frankly, it’s become the mark of stupidity and intolerance in this campaign — and it will get a lot worse if Barack Obama wins the election.

this IS the sort of thing which CAN resonate: people will sometimes make a voting decision against someone who insults them directly.

John Murtha is the racist. Anyone who derides such a wide swath of people based on race…. is the racist!
Maxx on October 22, 2008 at 12:37 PM
A couple questions on this. Firstly, when has the Obama campaign ever claimed to be post-racial? I could very well be wrong but it seems like he himself has never claimed to be a “post-racial” figure or run a post-racial campaign, the media and conservatives has just projected this onto him.
And if this is so, why does he need to be post-racial? Why is it that white candidates are never required to be post-racial?
crr6 on October 22, 2008 at 12:38 PM
I used to live just NE of Philly and can attest to the fact that most whites I knew did not like black people.
But let me clarify that point. Their dislike had nothing to do with the “blackness” or physical charasteristics of blacks but rather it was an utter disdain for the attitude and politics of the black community in nearby Philadelphia. I lived in PA when the radical black organization MOVE set an entire city block on fire. I don’t recall what they were protesting but most of us were just dumbfounded that they wouldset public housing on fire. Blacks in Philly, and in most large cities, have a disgusting and tiring attitude of being victims and are felt that they are owed something by whites. It is extremely vocal in the NE. Most whites long ago fled the “city of brotherly love” for the suburbs and exurbs.
If whites are racists then why do we get along so well with Asians and Indians?
I hate whites afflicted with Liberal guilt.

Nah, has nothing to do with those “spread the wealth around” comments and policies. Has nothing to do with his character and or associations. Probably doesnt have much to do with the “bitter, clinging to guns and religon” comments. Couldnt be any of that could it? Its all because we’re racists. If it weren’t so laughable it could make you mad. Wait, maybe we are sick and tired of Democrats calling us racists when we reject their liberalism and socialism and ignorance to running ANYTHING!
OSUBuciz1 on October 22, 2008 at 12:41 PM
John M. Baer is also a racist. He just used the “N-word” that applies to whites, which is “cracker.” But of course since the offending word was directed at white people, he will get a pass and the media will not call attention to his racism.

I’ll take it. He can complain all he wants about racism. In this particular case, it will do the left more harm than good. As long as McCain responds apporopriately.
People don’t like being called racist. This is one case where Obama’s camp consistently goes too far and damages themselves. The negative spin reflects on them.
McCain should use this to their advantage by responding. Keep it in the news. Keep it positive, and keep it clean.
The RED SHIFT is coming!

Limbaugh is on a tear now about the prospect of riots after the election. “Welcome to the land of Barack Obama.”
I must admit, that the prospect of riots after the election is depressing – what cheers me up is the fact that they will rioting in protest of McCain’s election.
The racist card is backfiring. One tires of being called a racist if he doesn’t vote for the black guy and may end up voting against him out of sheer spite.

I’m saying he should be allowed to talk about racial issues as much as a white candidate, he can’t though because the media handcuffs him. Imagine what would happen if he had run a “Two America’s” type campaign like Edwards, or if he had simply spent a significant amount of time highlighting urban school reform, affirmative action and white collar crime. People would say he was “the black candidate” and that he was just “looking after his own kind”. He’d get marginalized quickly.

HawaiiLwyr on October 22, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Somebody please explain this to me. Both the N-word and cracker are racist terms…. right? So why is it that if someone uses the N-word the entire media goes nuclear from coast-to-coast, but the media itself routinely uses the racist term “cracker” with glee, as if its not a racist term. How do they get away with such an obvious double standard? Someone please explain that to me because I don’t understand it.

Try this on a Carr’s Water Cracker: I call it Hors d’Oeuvres de Michelle Ma Belle.
Mix 1 tablespoon of fine red lumpfish caviar (Romanoff brand – you can get it in the supermarket)with 4 tablespoons of Breakstone sour cream. Slice a steamed lobster tail into medallions. Spoon a dollop of the caviar/sour cream mix onto the cracker and place a lobster medallion on top. Dust with a quick sprinkle of cracked pepper.
Delicious.

God I’m so sick of all this racist crap. If you criticize Obama, you’re a racist. If you don’t vote for Obama, you’re a racist. Racism has been dumbed down for this election to where it is essentially meaningless.
We are now left with the choice of at least four years of the ‘racism’ sword being hung over our heads with President Obama or at least four years of being told that our country is incredibly racist.

So Murtha says Rev. Wright is correct? Good, we can air clips from his sermons then.
marklmail on October 22, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Well, he seems understandably reluctant to talk about urban school reform, since we all know how well that went with the pesky Annenberg Challenge thing, which he would probably prefer remain in the background. Affirmative action won’t get him any traction because reparations for slavery lurks just around that bend and we all know it. White collar crime? Fitzgerald seems to be actively involved in pursuing that in the Rezko and Chicago political machine relationships. So, perhaps Obama prefers to avoid those subjects, but not because of race. Do you think any of that makes him just a bit uneasy?
a capella on October 22, 2008 at 1:07 PM
On a thread about Alcee Hastings, you didn’t even know he was a man rather than a woman. You threw up the ‘racist’ charge right away, and then did spend two posts asking inappropriate questions and making suggestive remarks about my childhood

Trying to shame people into voting for Obama by calling them racist doesn’t work very well when people know they aren’t racist. Your mind would have to be pretty weak to just go “yeah, I must be racist because you called me one and to make amends I must vote Obama”.
And the real racists don’t give a damn what people call them because societal peer pressure hasn’t worked on them to this point. Why would it now? I just don’t see this tactic paying off.
