Philly columnist: Hey, we really are racists here in PA

posted at 12:30 pm on October 22, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

I suspect that John McCain may be closing the gap in Pennsylvania, even without looking at the numbers.  Why?  Because more Keystone State figures keep talking about how racist their neighbors are.  John Murtha accused his constituents of racism and then backed off to just call them rednecks.  Now Philadelphia Daily News columnist John Baer picks up where Murtha left off:

I think McCain’s camp is banking on Pennsylvania’s “cracker factor.”

I think the campaign believes the Democratic view – expressed by Ed Rendell last winter and Jack Murtha last week (and James Carville 22 years ago) – that there are racist tendencies among Pennsylvania voters. …

So, if you take the most recent polling – an Allentown Morning Call poll Sunday is reflective of others and puts Obama 12 points up, 52-40 – I figure McCain’s folks figure, well, heck, that’s really only 7 points and since most polls have a 3-point margin of error, maybe just 4 points, and that puts us right in the game.

Meanwhile, McCain’s campaign, in TV ads and on the stump, is calling Obama’s tax- cut proposal a “government handout” and “welfare.” McCain yesterday said it’s “just another government giveaway.”

Whom do you think that’s aimed at?

Gee, I don’t know, John — maybe people who don’t want to keep funding redistributionist policies?  Perhaps people who don’t want taxes increased?  Taxpayers who want the approaching entitlement meltdown to get fixed before creating even more entitlements?

Or are those concepts just a little too complicated for your “sophisticated” noggin?

This is what happens when the supposedly post-racial Obama campaign explicitly exploits racism as a campaign tactic.  Suddenly, every policy dispute becomes “racist”, even the most fundamental debates on the nature of government.  McCain can’t even argue against a tax policy without being accused of pandering to the drooling rednecks Baer and Murtha suddenly see surrounding them.

I’ve warned about this for months.  People like Baer and Murtha want to silence debate because they don’t have the answers for it.  They need to hide their own ignorance and stupidity by making baseless accusations in hopes of declaring vast areas of public policy off limits for discussion.  Quite frankly, it’s become the mark of stupidity and intolerance in this campaign — and it will get a lot worse if Barack Obama wins the election.

The Daily News is the paper most read by the black population in Philly, although its editors and most of its writers are white. But most people only read it for the sports page anyway. It ceased being relevant editorially a long time ago.

A couple questions on this. Firstly, when has the Obama campaign ever claimed to be post-racial? I could very well be wrong but it seems like he himself has never claimed to be a
crr6 on October 22, 2008 at 12:38 PM

you’re correct it was Obambi that pointed out he doesn’t look like the presidents on our money. and he has a ‘funny name’

his assumption, as transparent as it is, is that HE of course has moved beyond race and it’s a shame that others will focus on his race and vote for against him

Quite frankly, it’s become the mark of stupidity and intolerance in this campaign — and it will get a lot worse if Barack Obama wins the election.

Stupidity abounds in the media, the candidates (politicians are not generally intelligent – they’d be otherwise gainfully employed if they were), and hopefully not so much in the electorate, M.R.’s predictions aside.

What an interesting thread this turned out to be. Who knew that limes/citrus weren’t to scurvy/Limeys, what Kraut is to Germans? Quick replies, nice…

I was about to ask you, Manly, to get yourself out of the stupor (being down), when you provided us an elegant caviar recipe, proving that you’d left your state already. Never boring with you.

On the Alaskan cookbook, or any other, your marketing strategy aside, upinak and M.R. could open up to HA for ideas, then market the books right here. We all could find at least 100 others who’d buy them. Then they’d market themselves…If you have bigger/better plans, ignore.

Come to think of it – we could create an HA cookbook…

Now I feel weird for having typed all this, but not sorry.

Sure, it’s because I’m a racist because I don’t want to cast my vote for an inexperienced, unqualified, far-left jackass in Obama, for President.

I can’t think of one single reason to vote for Barack Obama for dog catcher in fact, but really, it’s because I’m a racist that I’m not voting for this clown.

John M. (don’t you dare leave out the “M.”, Ed) Baer was a PR flack for the RINO Little Billy Scranton when he ran for Gov. of Pa. against the real Bob Casey back in 1986. James Carville whipped his ass with a hippie ad in the last week of the campaign and he hasn’t been the same since. Baer is what passes for conservatism in the Philly papers, esp. since Michael Smurfconish (who has columns in both papers, plus his talk show) revealed his true blue colors by coming out for Obambi this past weekend.
Rockmom, I’m down to buying the Daily News for the sports section and Fridays, when my friend Christine Flowers writes. (I think she’s a PUMA, but she hasn’t admitted it yet.) Best place to read about Flyers, Phillies, Eagles, 76ers and Big Five hoops.

The term “racism”, as “liberal” and “progressive”, has been hyjacked. They’ve lost their meaning and no one cares any longer. The Obamas will have done more to set back racial progress, than anyone in the last 30 years. To crr6, Obama has not run as a unifier, as a president for all Americans. Entelechy on October 22, 2008 at 2:14 PM

I used to live just NE of Philly and can attest to the fact that most whites I knew did not like black people.

But let me clarify that point. Their dislike had nothing to do with the “blackness” or physical charasteristics of blacks but rather it was an utter disdain for the attitude and politics of the black community in nearby Philadelphia. I lived in PA when the radical black organization MOVE set an entire city block on fire. I don’t recall what they were protesting but most of us were just dumbfounded that they wouldset public housing on fire. Blacks in Philly, and in most large cities, have a disgusting and tiring attitude of being victims and are felt that they are owed something by whites. It is extremely vocal in the NE. Most whites long ago fled the “city of brotherly love” for the suburbs and exurbs.
If whites are racists then why do we get along so well with Asians and Indians?
I hate whites afflicted with Liberal guilt.

DerKrieger on October 22, 2008 at 12:39 PM

I lived in Landsdown just outside of west Philly when the Move fire happened. The Move idiots didn’t start the fire the police department did under the fine leadership of Mayor Wilson B. Good. The fire department didn’t start fighting the fire until huge tracks of west Philly were on fire, mainly because they were justifiably afraid of getting shot at by the people barricaded into the Move house. Also, this was a middle class mainly black neighborhood not public housing.

I pointed this out a few days ago when the whole Murtha thing first happened, the part of PA that Philly pols like to call Alabama in the middle, voted for the black guy running for governor in the last election. Lynn Swann was the Republican who ran an unsuccessful campaign against Fast Eddy Rendell. Swann to refresh your memory is black and a well liked former Pittsburgh Steeler. Rendell carried Philly, Pittsburgh, oh and Murtha’s district in Western central PA. Harrisburg, York, Lancaster, Allentown, Reading, Gettysburg, Hanover and pretty much everything in between went for Swann, and I suspect most will go for McCain in November. So they voted for a black Republican in 2006 but now they’re all RACISTS because they won’t vote for a far left Democrat who happens to be 50% black? Could it be they are conservative, hunters and people who go to church on Sunday who tend to vote Republican? Nah, lets think the worst of them.

Why aren’t they interviewing Ed Rendell MORE?
Cue up the Michelle Obama sound bites.
Pile it on.
The more they talk the deeper the hole gets.

I apologized for the use of that word and publicly stated regret my use of it here, but….

that doesn’t change the reality that you are a dishonest race-baiting creep who immediately reverted to very personal attacks because I poked fun at a disgraced and impeached judge.

People like you are becomming the norm on the Left, but every time I see you troll your garbage here I will be on your case

Understood?

Liberal Demo-rats are more racist than Republicans. Some of these stupid liberal should expend some time reading American History and they will find out, which party is truly racist. I give them a hint is not the Republican Party and Al Gore’s father was for segregation.

I retract / withdraw it, and regret I said it

That’s more then anyone has ever gotten from crr6…should have stopped after the first two “it’s”.
This is a guy (crr6) who claimed we colonized Africa, destroyed their natural resources and infrastructure. He’s a liberal troll, set about to just argue his case against America…you were too kind to him.

Meanwhile, McCain’s campaign, in TV ads and on the stump, is calling Obama’s tax- cut proposal a “government handout” and “welfare.” McCain yesterday said it’s “just another government giveaway.”

So mentioning the word “welfare” is racist, but assuming that only black people are on welfare is not?

Give me a friggin’ BREAK!

Hey, I wonder if “Cracker” is code word for something.

Will the designated thinkers in the press let us know soon?

Elizabetty on October 22, 2008 at 6:05 PM

And the the media wonders why we think they have a left wing bias…

Cr4sh Dummy on October 22, 2008 at 6:18 PM

Does anybody realize the extent to which black people have been trained to hate white people?

jay12 on October 22, 2008 at 1:47 PM

Trained? You mean like in the circus? And by who, may I ask?

Inartfully expressed. Allow me:

“Do people realize the extent to which many African-Americans – particularly those in the inner cities – have been conditioned, by generations of servitude on the Liberal Plantation, to resent the very people who want nothing more than to see them free of their bondage?”

How’s that?

(sigh). If what I say doesn’t add to the discussion then sure, call me out on it, but trolling every single post I make is tiresome, pointless and frankly a bit creepy. But hey, if that’s what floats your boat more power to you.

right2bright on October 22, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Where did I say that? If by “we” you mean white people, then yes we did colonize Africa. We did take many of their resources and the limited infrastructure we set up was there to exploit those natural resources rather then to help the local populations. You dispute this?

crr6 on October 22, 2008 at 10:11 PM

You all realize that the term “cracker” does not refer to a food substance but the sound that a whip makes when wielded.

One thing, I think some of us can agree on is-the word racism has been thrown around so much that it no longer hits a nerve or holds water.
The meaning of the word has been re-defined and applied to just about everything.
There are so many of us out here that never knew we were racist till now, thanks to the Democratic Party.
Four years of Bo and a good portion of the country will be accused of racism should we dare question anything he says or does.
We certainly have gotten a taste of what is coming should he be elected.
So being a racist, by their definition, is not all that bad.
