Palin: I support a path to citizenship for illegals

posted at 8:33 pm on October 22, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

This one’s for you, boss.

As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?

There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that’s not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?

No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They’ve got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

Here’s the vid. I can’t make out the Q&A in English thanks to the Spanish overdub, but maybe you’ll have better luck. There’s more to the interview than the transcript indicates — she speaks at length about Chavez, for example — so maybe collectively we can piece the whole thing together. This guy seems to have picked up a few extra snippets. E.g., “We secure our borders first. But then with a comprehensive approach we must deal humanely with those who are here, and we must allow the steps to be taken to protect the families of those who are here, maybe as illegal immigrants today.” Exit prediction: By 2012, she’ll have “reconsidered.” Of course, by then, it’ll be too late.

She doesn’t want to rock the boat.

Are you kidding me? She loves to rock the boat.

I just wish someone would come out and tell the truth.

HornetSting on October 22, 2008 at 9:55 PM

Are you kidding me? She told the truth. That’s the beauty of it all. She said the shrewd thing, at the right time, to a cutthroat media, without a shred of dishonesty.

I have to call horsesh*t, Salty. Why can’t she come out and say…they are BREAKING THE DAMN LAW! We need to look out for the American citizens. They are hurting right now. Their wages are being lowered by illegal aliens and our healthcare system is in the toilet because of free healthcare to illegal aliens. That rings a lot truer than….”we have to be humane…blah blah blah blah blah..God’s children blah blah blah!”

I’m as big an anti illegal gal as they come. But I am not going to let anything distract me from making sure that McCain stomps Obama come Nov 4th. Sarah has been shielded from the problems of illegal immigration up their in Alaska. I am sure that when she spends a few years down here in the lower 48 it won’t take long for her to see the light.
mrsmwp on October 22, 2008 at 8:46 PM

Here’s hoping.

And for the people who say all is lost, need I remind you that the president can’t get anything he wants. Doubt me? You can ask Supreme court chief justice Harriet Miers for confirmation. Oh, that’s right. You can’t.

But if Obama is president, then there is no such way to protest enough for all the republicans to make him not do something. Last two weeks people. Last two weeks. Keep your heads on straight. Don’t get too drunk or too moonbat and do something that you are going to regret.

wise_man on October 22, 2008 at 10:23 PM

I wasn’t born to walk on water
I wasn’t born to sack and slaughter
But on my soul, I wasn’t born
To stoop to scorn, and knuckle under
A man can learn to steal some thunder
A man can learn to work some wonder
And when the guantlet’s down,
It’s time to rise and climb the sky
And soon the moon will smolder
And the winds will drive
Yes, a man grows older but his soul remains alive
All those tremulous stars still glitter
And I will survive!
Let my heart grow colder and as bitter as a falcon in the dive

There was a dream, a dying ember
There was a dream, I don’t remember
But I will resurrect that dream
Though rivers stream and hills grow steeper
For here in hell where life gets cheaper
Oh, here in hell the blood runs deeper
And when the final duel is near
I’ll lift my spear and fly
Piercing into the sky and higher
And the strong will thrive
Yes, the weak will cower while the fittest will survive
If we wait for the darkest hour
Till we spring alive
Then with claws of fire, we devour like a falcon in the dive

For those who just want to send them home, there are many of these illegals who have American citizens as children. We would be, in essence, “sending back” kids who’ve never been out of the country.

“For the children” is the stuff of liberals. The children should either be put in foster care or sent back home. THey can return when they’re 18.

We need to change the either the code or the Constitution to take away birthright citizenship, because apparently an entire country has decided to abuse it.

Cripes! Facing the biggest economic downturn half the country has ever seen, and these clowns want to add illegal immigrants to the welfare rolls.

I know what I know. McCain will win. That is not opinion, it is fact, as surely as the sun will rise tomorrow. It does not thrill me to know this, as I am no fan of John McCain. But it is what it is.

He will be the 44th president of the U.S. Sarah Palin will be the 45th.

Not a great fan of him either, HornetSting. I didn’t vote for him when the primary came to my state. But I respect the wishes of the greater number of republicans who outnumbered me. And it didn’t take long for me to understand what Obama was all about. I have always thought less of the democrats who use emotion, rather than logic to define them and how they decide on political stances. My logic and reasonings here haven’t changed. I know what Obama wants to do. Who knows what he can actually accomplish. I just can’t understand some people. I do know why democrats hare unhinged about Palin. Why any one of our own will act the same against McCain and now Palin …. it’s just – makes me lose faith in the belief that others can think rationally, and how sad it is when they allow themselves to let a single issue drive them to do nothing while so much now is at risk. With everything we know about Obama and Biden.

I see your point, and I cede it…to a point.

But, is it fair to say that you wish that Sarah Palin were on the top of the ticket? I know I do.

But, if she was, this race would be completely different. She wouldn’t have been around for just 6-7 weeks with a straight jacket on. It would be her race, not McCain’s.

Anyway;

Your insistence that my horse sense smells a little rank (no offense taken either), I believe, requires ignoring the entirety of my point.

With two weeks left, and the media positioned to control the message and completely destroy her, and the fact that she is not the one running for Pres, and that her rhetoric is wide open for interpretation…

She remained honest, while outflanking the MSM.

I’m saying, if we want this woman to carry our water, we had better watch her back, too.

Folks, I consider myself a strong conservative and I think the GOP has screwed this immigration thing up royally. I love Michelle but I think she could benefit from reading this post I did about it. As the son of legal (only because the US has open door for Cubans) immigrants it’s frustrating because I feel the other side hasn’t gotten a fair hearing on this.

Ya’ll are in two sorry states: Prone to believing in your own socialist/communist/Evil Empire conspiracy fantasies about Obama, and prone to indulging in denial and self-deception in regards to Sarah Palin.

Palin is a political blank slate, and you have written every dreamy wished-for characteristic, strength, personality trait, etc that you deeply need in a candidate. You have projected onto her a fantasy persona of the perfect conservative. Now you are forced to either come face to face with her reality, or descend back into that dream world by making up excuses and minimizing your own conservative principles.

I have never been comfortable with Palin, couldn’t quite put my finger on why, but now am coming closer…

Why?

That’s a very good question Trailboss.

Maybe you should work for the MSM and ask Obama, “why, Senator, do you have the most liberal voting record, even left of the self avowed socialist, Bernie Sanders?”

National Journal

Just exactly what do you call a regime of “spreading the wealth” by using the absolute authority of government to take property from one group of people, against their will, and dispersing it to others, who will now have legal claim to that property?

Saltysam on October 23, 2008 at 12:35 AM

Just exactly what do you call a regime of “spreading the wealth” by using the absolute authority of government to take property from one group of people, against their will, and dispersing it to others, who will now have legal claim to that property?

Saltysam on October 23, 2008 at 12:35 AM

I call it the 50 States and the Federal Governments, as currently constituted and nurtured by both Republicans and Democrats. I call it involuntary taxation, which all taxation is, and some of that is used to support people who meet whatever guidelines the govt’ promulgates.

“Spreading the wealth” may indeed one tenet of true socialism, depending on what exactly is meant by ’spreading the wealth.’ We currently ’spread the wealth’ by subsidizing free lunches in schools, free health care in ER’s, and in allowing homeowners large tax deductions for payment of interest. We tax all workers in order to pay for the retirements of the elderly, give them medicare, and private enterprise chips in by giving them reduced cost meals.

But true socialism is mainly focused on the state ownership of capital and the means of production and distribution. I don’t see any indication of that in Obama’s voting record – save for the bailout, and that is a necessary intervention in a very shaky market.

trailboss on October 23, 2008 at 12:50 AM

trailboss on October 23, 2008 at 12:50 AM

Wrong.

Socialism is an ideology.

Using taxes to build public roads or providing for the common defense is one thing, taking property from one party and distributing it to another is an entirely different animal.

Obama wants to redistribute property. He said it. I believe him. Are you calling him a liar?

Using taxes to build public roads or providing for the common defense is one thing, taking property from one party and distributing it to another is an entirely different animal.

Disagree Salty. Taking property from one party and distributing it to another is called taxation. Some of that money is used for the common good, but much of it is simple redistributionism. Why are you and I paying Uncle Sam for the guy in the next office over to be able to retire more comfortably? We have no guarantee that those coming up behind us will have to do the same thing, and why should they?

trailboss on October 23, 2008 at 1:04 AM

Where’s your confounded dictionary?

Taxation is a levy charged. Appropriation is distributing.

Trailboss would have us believe that the full political spectrum of the US Senate does not include socialists, even in its leftist extreme.

Bernie Sanders, a well known and self avowed socialist, has a voting record to the right of Barack Obama, and yet he thinks you’d be engaged in paranoid fantasy to call Obama a socialist.

Saltysam on October 23, 2008 at 1:13 AM

Where in the world did you come up with that bullshit? I have said nor implied any such thing. You have conflated liberalism with socialism, and they are not one and the same.

That’s called denial, not rational. You won’t even acknowledge that he is a socialist by any general standards of reason.

I’m voting McCain/Palin no matter what but still have to say:

The first part of the quoted transcript is such a strawman in two ways — no one on the anti-illegal immigration side has suggested “rounding them up” and trucking them back to the border, and number two, it’s a strawman to say that that course would be “inhumane”. America always treats our criminals humanely and how would putting them in a car and driving them (on our tab, no less) to the border be so horrendous? But, no one is saying that anyway. All we are saying is if we crack down on the employers, the illegals will go home anyway. Which is just exactly what is happening and has been happening even before the market meltdown. Take into account that we’ve had a market meltdown, and even more illegals are running home.

I also take issue with this part

I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here.

“Safety”, well the people who live in border towns don’t feel too “safe” anymore because of the murders being committed by some illegals. “Prosperity”, illegals are taking jobs away from Americans. “Health”, God only knows what diseases these undocumented illegals are bringing here to Americans.

Back to the market meltdown and how illegals are going home, I got to thinking, wouldn’t it be funny if someone threw an amnesty party (either McCain or, God forbid, Obama) and no one came? All the illegals might say, thanks but no thanks! LOL! One can only wish.

Aslans Girl on October 23, 2008 at 1:48 AM

Where in the world did you come up with that bullshit? I have said nor implied any such thing. You have conflated liberalism with socialism, and they are not one and the same.

Correct. Liberalism and socialism are not one and the same, in the classical sense.

But in the context of the American body politic, modern liberalism is socialism. And if you want to deny this, then you want to deny it. There is no rational way for you to potentially see it otherwise.

I suspect that when you actually have something that you’ve worked your ass off, half of your life for, and then some asswipe with a BA in Social Sciences and a law degree crawls out from beneath a rock and points his little callous free, Marxist finger at your “wealth” and makes the case for stealing it away, you will finally understand the demon that you are currently dancing with.

Saltysam on October 23, 2008 at 1:48 AM

It also annoyes me because it shows that she is believing the nonsense from the pro-amnesty/guest worker program Repubs and either not thinking for herself or actually agreeing with them. She has publically and vocally disagreed with Mac on other issues recently, so I don’t see why she’d have to toe the line here unless she actually means this nonsene she’s spouting here.

Saltysam on October 23, 2008 at 1:58 AM

People, have faith in yourselves. We fought the Bush immigration reform and I’m sure we’ll fight Juan if he comes down to it. But, we will not be able to fight Obama. Remember that.

The legal immigrants shall be first in line … not to worry though ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS SCOFFLAWS! … you can have it all handed to you on a silver platter too, you just have to get in line… but no cuttsies!

McCain has indoctrinated her well. I guess he never learned his lesson when he gave me the impression he had.

Screw this crap. I’m not voting for McCain, or the Obamassiah. I guess I’ll have to put the other POTUS candidates on a dart board and throw a dart while blindfolded this time around.

promachus on October 23, 2008 at 1:58 AM

Bingo.

You would think that the wobbly conservatives (I can’t even believe there is such a thing) would wrap their noggin around this.

If a voter doesn’t like McCain, but doesn’t like Obama either, you would think the best vote they can cast is for divided government. Since Pelosi and Reid are going to have their way with Congress, McCain and Palin make sense for those that shudder at the thought of Obama, Pelosi and Reid running the show.

Well, I actually answered your questions (somewhat) before I saw your last post. I’m just waiting for it to post before continuing.

On a side note: I truly am not offended. You can say anything you want to me in that respect. If I am offended, I would either tell you, or keep my mouth shut. It’s silly to take things personally down here in the anonymous comments section of a blog. It makes me laugh when I see that going on.

So, let ‘er rip. Be yourself, I enjoy your schizophrenic political beliefs, seriously, I’m not offended.

We lost another hospital in my town; closed, boarded up, done.

Why? Ask any nurse and they’ll whisper: Illegals dropping babies by the ton; maternity costs are killing the local hospitals.

mylegsareswollen on October 23, 2008 at 3:57 AM

OMG, she sounds exactly like McCain!

“There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that’s not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.”

Does this sound familiar to anyone? She sounds like every other veteran political hack in Washington.

“I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.”

This makes me sick to my stomach. I don’t give a damn why they want to be in America, and if they were following the rules Sarah they wouldn’t be here in the first place.

Just when we thought that McCain had picked an actual conservative for a running mate, we get this crap. God help us.

orlandocajun on October 23, 2008 at 6:38 AM

Oh come on, she sounds perfectly reasonable. Secure the borders first, no total amnesty. The fact that she does not want to put every illegal in a box car and ship him south does not mean she is a traitor or something.

Besides, with the economy the way it is a lot of them will leave anyway.

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 7:14 AM

mylegsareswollen:

I work in health care and I don’t care what anyone is whispering to you, small hospitals are going under all over the place whether there are illegals there or not. In big cities big hospitals are having trouble because of all the poor people who do not pay. In fact when liberals start promoting nationalized health care they use the issue of closing hospitals and clinics to justify government intervention into health care.

Terrye on October 23, 2008 at 7:17 AM

Terrye, you’re kidding right? “No total amnesty” sounds like “almost pregnant” to me.

Anyway, my point is that she’s spitting out talking points. I thought that she was going to be fresh and continue to be her own woman, which she has a reputation for being.

I thought that we finally had a politician who was going to speak naturally and honestly with us. She’s already sounding like any other political hack.

Too bad too.

orlandocajun on October 23, 2008 at 7:19 AM

Chances are she didn’t spend a whole lot of time on the Immigration position paper they gave her to read for a simple reason: There isn’t a damn of difference between Obama’s and McCain’s positions. Neither wants to acknowledge that enforcing existing laws, combined with an economic downturn, is doing a lot more to curb and even reduce illegal immigration while they float carrots to juice-up the Hispanic vote.

Palin can’t even pander well, she’s just a phony. Redneck my ass, she’s a Land’s End millionaire who thinks she can fool the dumb-vote.

sanguine4 on October 23, 2008 at 7:20 AM

I am in favor of understanding our political world (if that’s possible) on semi-rational terms, and find myself fighting over that constantly here at HA. I also happen to enjoy it.

trailboss on October 23, 2008 at 1:14 AM

No you’re not. You’re a troll who enjoys making provocative comments. That’s ok. But don’t puff yourself up.

Obama is measurably left of Bernie Sanders, socialist, on one issue that I can name right off the top – Born Alive Infant Protection Act. Passed Senate unanimously. Obama voted against the identical bill each and every time it came up in the Illinois Senate.

Jaibones on October 23, 2008 at 7:49 AM

Vote your third party. I am not happy about McCain. He is the lesser of the two evils. A third party is a waste.

There is no way to deal with the immigration issue perfectly (in a way that will please anyone) if one has the God-given constraints of mercy to deal with also.

You who consider yourselves social conservatives should stick your nose in the Bible once in a while.

Get over your math anxiety, and do the right thing.

Right_of_Attila on October 23, 2008 at 8:53 AM

I will never understand the ridiculous parroting of ‘lesser of two evils’ line. McCain is NOT evil. His is not as bad as Obama. No where near. MILES away. If you do nothing as millions of voters choose Obama, then you are allowing the greater of two evils to prevail.

And if Obama wins, there is nothing to stop him.

Bush never got everything he wanted. With McCain, he can’t steamroll anything he wants such as amnesty. If you think that this is the case, then why don’t you ask supreme court chief justice Harriet Miers about how the republican president can do anything he wants to above the complaints from his own party.

the Lord established the nations and set their boundaries. There is a perfect way to deal with the immigration issue…follow the law. its what Jesus did.

right4life on October 23, 2008 at 9:05 AM

you twist the bible to suit your political desires. pathetic.

right4life on October 23, 2008 at 9:09 AM

I find it so ironic that the same people who claim Palin’s statement was either an attempt to pacify the media, or shows that she’s a bible-adherent who cares about people, were the same ones who bashed McCain incessantly over “Shamnesty”.

Saltysam on October 23, 2008 at 9:33 AM

I kinda understand why she would say it like this. It may be a team of Mavericks, but I don’t see how she would be able to go against McCain on this one.

That said, I wish she hadn’t said anything about it, or rather that she hadn’t needed to say something about it.

Esthier on October 23, 2008 at 9:41 AM

I support a path to citizenship for illegals, too.

That path is: go back to your nation of origin and apply for legal immigration.

Why is that so freaking hard to understand? Maybe if I translate: regresar a su nación de origen y de aplicación para la inmigración legal.

James on October 23, 2008 at 10:08 AM

so pug, I guess that if you lock your door, you aren’t showing mercy to the homeless who could use your house for shelter. If you don’t give your wallet to the person asking for change at the Walmart, you aren’t showing mercy.

Christianity doesn’t mean that you are supposed to be the world’s doormat. It isn’t ‘cruel and unusual’ to send people back to their HOME. I guess you would think it horrible for Mexico to force you back to America if you were an illegal alien there.

Isn’t that mentality a bit condescending toward countries that aren’t America? I’d much rather us make America stronger by enforcing the law. . . than by giving it away to people who don’t deserve it and won’t care for it and will only take from it through entitlement programs.

The only difference in citizenship and how it is now is entitlement programs. 100 years ago, zero immigrants were given anything. If they didn’t want entitlement programs, I’d have no problem with illegals.

I like the guest worker program. But the guest worker program should be implemented to people who have no possibility of gaining citizenship. We have a process for becoming citizens that is free and fair to everyone across the world. Unless that is followed, I have nothing but contempt for ALL the laws that congress decides to pass concerning federal jurisdiction.

No, of course not…illegal aliens are just not a campaign issue this election because both campaigns have come out in support of them. I won’t change my vote based on this statement…I will simply chalk up another ‘lesser of two evils’ in the McCain column.

That’s a hell of a way to run a campaign. Seriously…when do we start seeing the ‘You may hate voting for me but at least I’m not as bad as Obama’ commercials? At least that would be honest.
