Palin: I support a path to citizenship for illegals

posted at 8:33 pm on October 22, 2008 by Allahpundit

This one’s for you, boss.

As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?

There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that’s not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?

No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They’ve got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

Here’s the vid. I can’t make out the Q&A in English thanks to the Spanish overdub, but maybe you’ll have better luck. There’s more to the interview than the transcript indicates — she speaks at length about Chavez, for example — so maybe collectively we can piece the whole thing together. This guy seems to have picked up a few extra snippets. E.g., “We secure our borders first. But then with a comprehensive approach we must deal humanely with those who are here, and we must allow the steps to be taken to protect the families of those who are here, maybe as illegal immigrants today.” Exit prediction: By 2012, she’ll have “reconsidered.” Of course, by then, it’ll be too late.

Somehow, that doesn’t have the insulting ring it did before.

I don’t think MedSchoolCatholic meant it as an insult. I believe he does actually support Ron Paul.

I hear ya, but McCain can come around on ANWR. Not on immigration. I’m sure this issue was discussed in depth if it ever came up – McCain makes a pretty big deal about having good relations with Latinos (not that it does him any good, but whatever), so he can’t very well have his VP being at odds with him on this.

WisCon on October 22, 2008 at 9:13 PM

The moment struck me and I opened my big mouth. But, thank you.
Don’t usually give up so much info…price of doing business. $200K hit a couple of years ago by cartels makes you a little skittish.

I hate to hear people say “path way to citizenship, and “we cannot deport all of them”

Enforcement makes them move. Enforce the laws, they will leave when they cannot get anymore benefits.

HornetSting on October 22, 2008 at 9:13 PM

What’s the difference?

BowHuntingTexas on October 22, 2008 at 9:09 PM

McCain? Strong stance against Iran.
Obama? Negotiate unconditionally.

McCain? Finish the job in Iraq.
Obama? Leave now.

McCain? Used to oppose the Bush tax cuts, now supports them.
Obama? Still doesn’t support them.

McCain? Won’t appoint liberal judges.
Obama? Wants liberal activist judges.

McCain? Wants offshore drilling.
Obama? Opposes.

It goes on.

As a fellow Catholic, I will accept she is only saying that a discussion , a stronger discussion, of the complications of life when sex is engaged in at a young age should be done in families. Let’s not read any more into it than what she said. There is enough of that going on in the MSM and blogs as it is.

amerpundit on October 22, 2008 at 9:15 PM

I’m not sure what to think about this.

The message is right on for me. I 100% agree with it. I agree with it when McCain says it too. I just think he’s lying when he says it.

The question for me now hinges on whether or not Palin is lying when she says it. I don’t have any reason to think she’s lying, except to note that she’s part of the McCain campaign which is famously dishonest about this issue.

ThackerAgency on October 22, 2008 at 9:16 PM

In an ordinary election, this would have been enough to lose my vote.

But: Her position essentially makes no difference. It is the president’s stance that matters. McCain is slightly better than Boosh in this regard, I think. And he is honorable enough to respect our will when we fight it down in Congress again.

Contrast that to what we will try — and fail — to get done if Osama Obama wins. Our opinions won’t be listened to; in fact, if they oppose his own, they are likely to earn us visits from the Obama Jugend.

Moreover, we will have much worse to worry about: a collapsed economy in which The Messiah spreads the last of our wealth to his cronies, national-security nightmares, the end of free speech, and on and on.

Sure gets the trolls’ knickers in a twist. All the McCain and Palin haters can rant away to their little hearts’ content.

ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 9:07 PM

McCain, but his brand of politics will lead the conservative movement to ruin much like Bush did in the last 8 years. Like Tony Blankely says, conservatism cannot be corrupted by “me to” conservatives. It is better to have an all-out fight against socialism than play with fire like we have been doing.

MedSchoolCatholic on October 22, 2008 at 9:12 PM

I never understood why Paul and Tancredo took such heat in the primaries from conservatives who eat their own. In 4 years, I better not hear “I love him but there is no way he could win.” That is how we got saddled with the worst nominee in GOP history.

Obama bin Biden say something stupid, and their supporting media covers for them.

McCain-Palin say something which can be exaggerated by a headline, and their (allegedly) supporting media blows it up with a vaguely deceptive and provocative headline.

Hey, AP. Keep it up, and you’ll get a “fairness doctrine.” Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?

Tommygun on October 22, 2008 at 9:24 PM

ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 9:24 PM

I’m confused. Do you support Obama? If so, how do you reconcile that support with your opposition to Republicans who, in your estimation, should be more conservative han they already are?

Did I say I supported Obama? No.

I support conservatism, a trait which John McCain rarely displays. And now I see Sarah Palin on the wrong side of the Immigration/National Security issue. I live in CA, a state that has no chance of breaking red. I’m going to use my vote to further an ideology. The GOP has not done anything to deserve my vote.

Shame on them and shame on McCain/Palin for pandering to illegals.

So do I, but only after we’ve got the border
AbaddonsReign on October 22, 2008 at 9:16 PM

But what should we do with the recurring problem of Visa over-stays?”

Talk about securing the border is pointless if millions are entering the country legally, and then over-staying their Visas, and just waiting for the next amnesty to occur….

There have been 7 amnesties since 1986, see numbersUSA.org.

The Forgotten Illegal Immigrants
by Jim Kouri, CPP While most of the political debate and media attention regarding illegal immigration focuses on border security and llegals who enter the country surreptitiously, there is an enormous number of immigrants who enter the US legally, but remain here illegally. Some law enforcement commanders and prosecutors are aware of the problem of so-call visa overstays. For instance, The Maricopa County (Arizona) Attorney’s Office hosted a conference on the issue of illegal immigration in November 2005. While the conference agenda addressed border security issues, the subject of visa overstays was addressed. Speakers included Congressman Tom Tancredo and renowned columnist John Leo, according to county attorney and columnist Rachel Alexander. Each year, millions of visitors, foreign students, and immigrants come to the United States. Foreign visitors may enter on a legal temporary basis — that is, with an authorized period of admission that expires on a specific date — either with temporary visas (generally for tourism, business, or work) or, in some cases, as tourists or business visitors who are allowed to enter without visas. The majority of visitors who are tracked depart on time, but others overstay — and since September 11, 2001, the question has arisen as to whether overstay issues might have an impact on domestic security. Significant numbers of foreign visitors overstay their authorized periods of admission.

As long as there are tourists coming to the US — with the hope of yet again another amnesty—then there will be many visa overstays:

The Immigration Service is publishing a shocking story Monday. Just shocking. The Immigration Service says of the 12 million illegals in this country, at least half entered the country legally. How could that happen?

Well, according to the Immigration Service six million illegals in this country are visa overstays. That is, they got a visa legally in their home country, they came here to visit and then they never left.

Now wait. I know people from Europe and Asian countries do this, but do you mean to tell me illegal Mexicans here are visa overstays?

Yes, I mean to tell you precisely that.

According to the Immigration Service, in 2005 there were 5.4 million temporary visas issued, and 17 percent went to Mexicans. That’s about three quarters of a million people. Not all of them are overstays, but it appears it is a very large number, in as much as somehow six million overstay illegals are in the country now.

Palin didn’t have to go that far. The problem with comprehensive immigration reform is no one believes the borders will be secured first- even St. John acknowledges this. She needs to nuance the message by pushing for a stand-alone enforcement bill first. The place to do that would have been the Laura Ingraham Show, but Laura wussed out.

Valiant on October 22, 2008 at 9:35 PM

McCain wants Comprehensive Immigration Reform – anyone remember McCain and Mr. Oldsmobile Kennedy?

Obama wants Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

We’re gonna get Comprehensive Immigration Reform – i.e. Citizinship for 20 million people here illegally with a 3rd grade education.

And they’ll be pandered to with free health care, free education, free housing (it’s very convenient that the housing market implodes and the government buys up mortgages to sell at fire sell prices right now) and free this and that.

Oh. And they’ll get to bring their mothers, their fathers, their brothers, their sisters, their sons, their daughters their cousins, etc. on over to live here and gain citizenship.

Hey. Everything here is free. Come’on over.

And who panders better with a complicit media?

MedSchoolCatholic on October 22, 2008 at 9:36 PM

Illegals shouldn’t be voting so why pander? Because of their legal relatives or business folks who need cheap labor?

Of course illegal immigrants should not be voting, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t. And I don’t think the McCain pandering is targeted at illegal immigrants but rather at the hispanic community as a whole. What’s funny is that the acceptance of illegal immigration is really a form of racism. By tolerating the overwhelming Latino illegal immigration we’re actively discouraging the legal immigration of Africans, Asians and Eastern Europeans.

The illegal immigration drives down wages and essentially steals jobs away from legal immigrants who traditionally would have held them. Which is why the “jobs Americans won’t do” line is such nonsense. Americans, especially legal immigrants, would do these jobs if they paid a fair wage. But they don’t pay a fair wage because there is no real consequence associated with hiring an illegal for absurdly low pay.

Just my two cents.

I agree with Palin. She’s just addressed in a few short sentences all the issues, and indicates the thinking that should drive a solution to those issues.

For those who just want to send them home, there are many of these illegals who have American citizens as children. We would be, in essence, “sending back” kids who’ve never been out of the country.

For those of you who don’t think American citizenship ought to be a birthright of anyone born here, I offer up Japan as the ultimate example of the type of second class life that could exist under such a law; there are residing in that land third and fourth generation “Koreans” who don’t speak Korean, but whose grandparents or great grandparents were brought over from Korea as forced labor, and who do not have Japanese citizenship.

Astroturfing in American English is a neologism for formal public relations campaigns in politics and advertising which seek to create the impression of being spontaneous “grassroots” behavior.
-Wikipedia

I work for no campaign nor back any candidate currently running for office. I was using my long-standing status as a HotAir commenter to perhaps remind you of this as I have certainly interacted with you, Bishop, before. As such, I have no idea why you think I would be astroturfing.

Since when has HotAir not allowed the voicing of opinion, especially on a topic that’s very much a hot-button issue among conservatives. You’re being ridiculous.

Valiant on October 22, 2008 at 9:41 PM

Legally or illegally voting?

BowHuntingTexas on October 22, 2008 at 9:43 PM

We are royally screwed no matter who gets in.
And Palin just put the final nail in the coffin.

BowHuntingTexas on October 22, 2008 at 9:35 PM

I have asked my co-workers at the hospital about the negative financial effects of illegal immigration. The devastating financial mess caused by illegals on hospitals has already been documented before.

But the only response I get from my fellow employees is, “just make sure you move to a different zip code where the schools are not affected.”

ColtsFan on October 22, 2008 at 9:43 PM

I have no problem with the first two answers.

Most of us who want the border enforced have argued that we are not looking to round everybody up and deport them, and noted that as a strawman erected by the pro-illegal immigration forces. We’ve largely argued enforce the existing laws and they will self-deport.

The second answer seemed to be reasonable as well, no amnesty and make sure those who are in line legally and follow the rules get the services and opportunities of this country. She might have fudge a little when she said “not total amnesty”, but on balance the answer was reasonable and in line with what most enforcement-first advocates want.

To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

This is the tough one to figure out, as the first portion could be interpreted as conflicting with the second portion. She does seem to be walking a bit of a tightrope here. I don’t think she wanted to come out as a full throated amnesty supporter, but given the intensity of feelings on both sides this issue, she didn’t want to step on McCain’s toes either.

I’ll be watching her on this one, but I wouldn’t throw her overboard just yet. And I do think she can be swayed into the enforcement-first position.

No revelation that Palin is McCain’s running mate, AP. And the interview was on Univision, so if you were expecting her to be offensive to that audience, get over her diplomacy. She said all of the “nice” things without saying anything “mean” yet not obligating herself to anything beyond a path to citizenship behind all of the legal immigrants who get first dibs.

Immigration reform is NOT going to be Palin’s pet cause. She isn’t interested enough to know those Alaskan referential numbers of estimated illegal aliens in residence. McCain has already relegated Palin towards education of special needs population.

Valiant on October 22, 2008 at 9:41 PM

As BowHunter said, legal or illegal voters?
I guess it is time to dust off one of my old rants that may illuminate the issue for people who don’t have a lot of actual experience with dealing with BOTH Americans of Hispanic descent, and with illegal alien invaders:

There are really two major things working against McCain on this particular subject. I’ve mentioned them here at HotAir several times since shamnesty first reared its ugly head, but it has been a while, so I’ll repeat them.

All my life, (outside of the time I was doing my world tours for Uncle Sam) I have lived right in the middle of this. I grew up with and among people who were proud descendants of the elite Spanish Land Grant holders, and had many friends among them.

They were also all Proud, Patriotic Americans, many of them much prouder of having served America as a part of the American military and/or part of the American political process, than they were of being descended from the minor Spanish nobility that first settled this side of the continent.

I lived and worked with the old time ’salt of the earth’ type Mexican immigrants who came here legally and worked their butts off to not only improve their lot in life, but to become proud American Citizens because they loved the principles upon which America was Founded, and under which she ’sailed’.

And I have lived in the middle of the more recent flood tide of a much different type of “hispanic” immigrant. While a good percentage of them are basically good people, and hard workers, all too few of them want to actually be Americans.
All too few want to embrace our successful American cultural traits and principles.

All too many of them don’t want to learn the language. All too many are “only here for the beer”; They want the better life that America can afford them, while clinging to the culture and principles of their failed homeland.

And more than a few of this newest generation of ‘undocumented immigrants’ come as invaders, intent on taking, by force, if necessary, lands that they consider to be theirs ‘by right’ because someone with a similar sounding name or a similar looking mien trod upon some of the trails of this region some hundreds of years ago.

Few of the first two categories like McCain, because he wanted still wants to reward those that entered like thieves in the night with all the stuff they worked years, indeed, generations, sometimes to achieve.

And of the last type, they don’t like McCain because he won’t GIVE them EVERYTHING. They think that the Democrats MIGHT GIVE them everything, but failing that, they know that with the Democrats in political power, that they will be able to TAKE everything they want, with impunity, by the rules of ‘multi-culti liberal guilt’ or take by force against a a weak government.

I will put this ’schtick” with much taco sauce on it up into your where the sun no shine asno nativist gringo bigot! Your dia is final.

Bushito and Juan and Obamito are all totally in my pocket now. Most of your House is in my pocket. Most all of your Senate is in my pocket. I have bought off or blackmailed almost all of them now. A bunch of pesos here, several women there, a young boy for a few of them like , a little male attention for a certain Senator from New York. Her husband still neglects her something awful. Oh my Lord, the things she wants me to do to her. It makes my skin crawl, but it is for a good cause.

A little booze spread around. Alright a whole lot of gin for a certain Senator. Ay curumba, can he ever put it down. And his son, double ay curumba. That rehab stuff sure didn’t do him any good! I’m not even sure that he went. Telling a certain other Senator that I would get him a lot of media time, he loves that so much. I have even offered him and his poco empalma a muchacho their own 24×7 TV station. You have no chance GRINGOS.

Your Grandfathers kept you from having to learn German or Japanese or be lamp shades. But YOU ARE NOT the men or women that they were, not even close.

Once we get our amnesty, we will all come to your country. We will all have at least 10 kids and in a generation we will overwhelm and deport most of you Gringos! Some of you, if you learn Spanish real well, we might let you stay to pick our lettuce or mow our lawns or take care of OUR children in what used to be your houses.

Those who don’t learn Spanish will be deported to Alaska. That is until Al Gore’s global warming heats things up and we want Alaska too, then we will deport you all to New Orleans. It will probably all be under water by then anyway. I hope you Gringos can swim, he, he, he. My bad!!!

So give it up and LEARN SPANISH! You should probably all buy Mexican flags too and fly them in your front yard and on your pickup trucks. If you already have an American flag there it is alright if you keep it, as long as you fly it upside down and below our great Mexican flag.

Now repeat after me – I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of Mucho Grande Mexico, and to the Republic for which it use to stand, one nation under me, with everything for us, and nothing for you.

And remember Gringos,

APRENDER EL ESPANOL!!!

It’s been like this since McCain won the primary. Apparently a bunch of brown shirted wannabe lockstep true believers followed Captain Ed over here; where HotAir used to have rough, but good natured wrangling over different points of view, now we have people accused of being Obama supporters/KosKids if they dare criticize John McCain for anything, or bring up his rather sketchy voting record. At one point, one enterprising commenter was demanding that people that disagreed with him should be banned because they were trolls.
You want a real laugh? Go to a poll thread that shows McCain trailing. There are at least 5 or 6 commenters that call Allahpundit names just for posting a poll. Others are disgusted with Michelle Malkin’s ‘disloyalty’ because she raised the possibility months ago that she might not vote for McCain. The fact that they are cr*pping on their hosts doesn’t seem to bother these commenters.
I’ve referred to them as lemming brownshirts, or stalinists. They all think alike, they’re intolerant of any criticism of John Mccain (justified or not), and most of them can’t debate their way out of a paper bag; they rely on sheer weight of numbers screaming at people with dissenting views.
Most of the time, it’s good for a laugh, but I’m getting really sick of the attacks on AP and Michelle. Disagreement is fine, but they host this little enterprise and a little bit of respect towards them would be nice.
