Palin: I support a path to citizenship for illegals

As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?
There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that’s not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.
Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?
No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They’ve got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.
To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?
I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.
Here’s the vid. I can’t make out the Q&A in English thanks to the Spanish overdub, but maybe you’ll have better luck. There’s more to the interview than the transcript indicates — she speaks at length about Chavez, for example — so maybe collectively we can piece the whole thing together. This guy seems to have picked up a few extra snippets. E.g., “We secure our borders first. But then with a comprehensive approach we must deal humanely with those who are here, and we must allow the steps to be taken to protect the families of those who are here, maybe as illegal immigrants today.” Exit prediction: By 2012, she’ll have “reconsidered.” Of course, by then, it’ll be too late.

A no to Amnesty and a yes to border security is enough for me. There’s no way to deport them politically so I think there HAS to be some way of naturalizing those here illegally.
Honestly at this point I’d be thrilled to simply get the border secured, even if it meant total amnesty for everyone already here.
Kronos on October 22, 2008 at 8:42 PM
I seriously thought she would be able to go through the entire campaign without ever commenting on immigration policy whatsoever.

So let’s see secure our borders first check
allow those here legally to stay and get in the front of the line check
assimilate those here illegally check. Problem solved in one two generations tops.
As long as the border is closed i could care less what we do with the ones already here. If I was born in Mexico you can bet your bottom dollar I would be living the sweet life in the USA. Not some tin shack in Mexico City.

I’m as big an anti illegal gal as they come. But I am not going to let anything distract me from making sure that McCain stomps Obama come Nov 4th. Sarah has been shielded from the problems of illegal immigration up their in Alaska. I am sure that when she spends a few years down here in the lower 48 it won’t take long for her to see the light.
mrsmwp on October 22, 2008 at 8:46 PM
Meh. Sometimes she has to say what she has to say when she has to say it. Not worth bunching the panties, Hornet.
ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 8:46 PM
Laura Ingraham has said she was solid on the issue yet refused to ask her about it in her interview.
Had she asked, she could have dissected the hispandering and possibly saved Palin’s future political viability.
McCain’s greatest crime is not losing the election, but emasculating such a wonderful prospect like Sarah Palin.
Valiant on October 22, 2008 at 8:46 PM
The problem with the amnesty bill of last year is that the bill gave lip service to border security and immediately gave citizenship to everyone. It was a whitewash an an attempt to sweep the problem under the rug. It also would cause more illegal immigration in the futre. Once the border is secure you can do alot to solve the problem.
unseen on October 22, 2008 at 8:46 PM
Yeah, great idea. Reward lawbreakers. Stop paying benefits to them, stop employing them…they will go home. No need to “deport” them. They will leave if the benefits dry up. I am tired of compromising on this…get them the hell out of my country!
HornetSting on October 22, 2008 at 8:46 PM
Game over man. game ….oh never mind
Roger Waters on October 22, 2008 at 8:46 PM
Same here. Enforce the laws and they will choose to leave. And get rid of the crimnals.
ctmom on October 22, 2008 at 8:47 PM
You can’t meet the other criteria of meeting citizenship requirements, Sarah, if you don’t fix the immediate problem first. It IS NOT impossible to deport 22+ million (12 million is bogus) illegals. It requires the will to act on it. It requires demanding Mexico, where the preponderance of illegals migrate from, to fix their craphole of a country and provide for its citizenry.
Fletch54 on October 22, 2008 at 8:47 PM
The two major responses will be:
A) Even though I oppose amnesty, I’ll call it “okay” because it’s Sarah Palin.
or….
B) She’s only saying this because that’s McCain position, even though she openly disagrees with him on other significant issues like energy.
amerpundit on October 22, 2008 at 8:47 PM
My honey makes his money getting rid of these lawbreakers!
Panties in knot over this. Tired of his hard work being “glossed” over. There said it.
HornetSting on October 22, 2008 at 8:48 PM
There’s no way to deport them practically! What are we supposed to do, call back the troops from Iraq and round them all up into every football stadium we can commandeer? We should never have let it get to this to begin with. But if we had a more efficient LEGAL system of immigration (like the one they had at, oh, I dunno, Ellis Island, maybe), these people could get back to mowing our lawns and cleaning our toilets.
And we’d be a better nation for it too. They might be so damn grateful, they’d even learn to speak English.
(Hey, a man can dream…)

It's Vintage, Duh on October 22, 2008 at 8:50 PM
Dude, that’s NOT what she thinks. That’s what McCain TOLD HER to say.
Nobody is saying to ’round them up’. But if there were drug dealers demanding amnesty, I guarantee you that there would be a full throated call to ’round them up’.
Nobody can look at the numbers of social security and medicare and say that adding more people to those systems will solve the problem. When the economy collapses, I imagine that those coming here for opportunity will go back for lack of opportunity when unemployment reaches 10% in this country.
But I wouldn’t read anything into these comments other than it is what McCain wants her to say. This is McCain’s show. . . she’s just a messenger.
Unfortunately McCain can do as much with illegal aliens from the Senate as he could do from the Presidency. . . so that entire argument is a loser all the way around for His Amnesty.

True enough. What are we gonna do, vote Obama? The stage is set. We can fight em like it’s 2007.
HornetSting on October 22, 2008 at 8:55 PM
As I watched and listened to the interview, on the subject of immigration she said she understood why people come to the US for opportunities, yet she says that they should not get the benefits that people who come legally have. Yet she is against deporting illegals because it is “inhumane” and “impossible.” She does believe in securing the borders and having a comprehensive reform of immigration because they are a vital part to our economy.
As a Cuban American, I am puzzled as to why the US is so vigilant with the Florida shores (as they should be) and deports Cubans to a repressive regime, yet Central and South Americans can cross our borders and roam around.
This issue with immigration is that I have friends who are illegal, and work hard and are in love with our country, yet there are crimes in my community and gang activity up because of illegals.
jencab on October 22, 2008 at 8:55 PM
We are 12 days away from an election that will decide the fate of the soul of this nation. Believe me when I tell you that – at this moment in time – the immigration issue is way, way at the bottom of priorities. With McCain we have a chance – slim, perhaps, but still a chance – of making headway on this issue. With Obama there will be no chance.
Those are the options. A crappy choice, I’m sorry to say, but the only choice we have. As conservatives we realize that sometimes one has to take a bite out of the crapwich.
And I salute your brave husband and his noble efforts to protect our borders. He has my thanks.
ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 8:55 PM
She could support letting illegals have my cupcakes for all I care.
I know far too much about Barack Obama to be worried about illegals now.

amerpundit on October 22, 2008 at 8:57 PM
Argh….
Palin is a perfect match for McCain. Stupid GOP ticket makes me wanna puke.
HebrewToYou on October 22, 2008 at 8:57 PM
Dude, energy was one of the positives that Palin brought to the table for McCain. It was an issue that McCain was changing his mind on. . . like offshore drilling.
McCain loves illegal aliens because he is a senator from Arizona trying to get their votes. He doesn’t think he can win re-election to the senate in Arizona without pandering to Hispanics. . . that’s the long and the short of McCain’s position.
Palin doesn’t deal with it at all, so I’m sure she hasn’t put much thought into it (Mexicans don’t make it up to Alaska). But if you put the numbers for entitlement programs in front of her, she’d understand why amnesty isn’t a good idea. McCain isn’t going to try to convince her that amnesty is a bad idea.

ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 8:59 PM
That kind of reminds me of Obama’s statement about gun control. He said that even if he wanted to he didn’t have the votes. The subtext is that he would love to do it, but it just isn’t going to happen. Palin probably feels the same way.

ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 9:00 PM
This is getting a bit irritating. The gates have been opened and the flood waters have encroached the farmland. You can’t back it out. You can wait for it to dry up but you can’t reverse the damage. 12( or 22 whatever) million fricken illegals? How do you do it? How do you purge them? The will?… easy polemics from the peanut gallery. Gov. Palin is saying.. look they’re here we need to document and process and track them. She also says the fence needs to be built… so build the GD fence and find a way to process these people and assimilate them , if possible. Californication is happening and it’s terrifying from a sovereignty point of view… find them and assimilate them. what is the difficulty in understanding this? God, I love this country and I want the borders secure big time.. but the damage is done…. who among you are so powerful you can snap your fingers and the 12( 22 million whatever) million are rounded up and sent back. I dream , too… c’mon! I will say this, you protect that border and stop the slime from crossing over, and you force Mexico to keep their undesirables( by their own admission)…. you’ve created the dam necessary to stop any more water.
MNDavenotPC on October 22, 2008 at 9:00 PM
Well then.
Pent. on October 22, 2008 at 9:01 PM
Why? because it isn’t an issue she’s had to deal with or will see any consequence from. McCain has told her to support amnesty, she does.
McCain doesn’t really have a position on gay marriage, or don’t ask don’t tell. For a ‘maverick’, McCain sure is wishy washy on his convictions.
In two weeks it won’t matter, Obama will be in the white house, McCain will be in the senate, and Palin will be in Alaska and everyone will think it was all just a dream.
ThackerAgency on October 22, 2008 at 9:01 PM
First let me admit that I have never been a round them up and deport them but I do like the idea of pressuring employers and I believe between that and the economy we are already seeing self deportation. But I still think that as long as I have to take my shoes off and go through a metal detector to take a trip that I paid for, they can take care of the borders.

HornetSting on October 22, 2008 at 9:02 PM
She is correct. Moreover, we don’t have to round up all of them. Have you noticed what happens in those cities and states where the current laws are actually enforced? Many of the illegals simply leave – some of them returning home. Do that everywhere on a federal level and most of them will depart on their own. No need for a round-up.
ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 9:02 PM
I will vote the most conservative candidates. The GOP downticket (Dole really needs help) . The presidential slot will go blank or be marked Barr or Baldwin.
Valiant on October 22, 2008 at 9:02 PM
What exactly did she mean in that answer?
MedSchoolCatholic on October 22, 2008 at 9:02 PM
Thacker…there you go again.
Perhaps she is saying it because it is the only sane thing to say. It is neither practical, nor possible to deport 12 million people.
Palin has shown herself to be practical on most every subject. That’s why so many of us like her. Not pandering to the audience du’jour, and not tainted by years of political “inside baseball”. It has not been her way.
This is already a non-issue for the GOP, as we already have McCain going this direction. If this is a deal-breaker, so be it. The vast majority understand that this is not the issue, nor the time, to sacrifice our votes over.
Her mistake was yesterday in implying to CBN that she supported a constitutional amendment on marriage. I was shocked at that mistake, and I don’t think that is truly what she meant. I’d like to hear more of the context of that interview.

Humane way?
What is a humane way to deal with law-breakers, many of whom engage in Social Security number theft and other crimes, such as Identity theft and credit card theft.
When the USA government provides a “pathway to USA citizenship,” that message is received loud and clear by the illegals themselves, as bad behavior is encouraged every time the government provides an “incentive” for wrong actions.
ColtsFan on October 22, 2008 at 9:04 PM

The government (LOCAL GOVERNMENTS) keep raising PROPERTY TAXES to pay for local services for these illegals. Let me put it to you this way. . .
It’s neither PRACTICAL, nor POSSIBLE to absorb an extra 20 million people on our entitlement rolls.
But of course this is the problem with the Republican brand. Conservatives have a problem with the government spending money they don’t have. This new crop that calls them conservatives ‘there you go again’ see no problem with the government spending money that they don’t have.
ThackerAgency on October 22, 2008 at 9:07 PM

I know we can’t deport 12 million people. I do wonder, however, how many we could deport every year if we really tried. Even if we can only deport 100,000 we should damn well be doing it. The example we set should have a chilling effect on the ones who haven’t been caught yet, and maybe serve to deter those still in Mexico from trying.
