McCain ad: “Sweat Equity”

John McCain knows how to use a winning message. The latest McCain ad is titled “Sweat Equity”, but it just as easily could be called “I Am Spartacus”:
BARACK OBAMA: I think when you spread the wealth around it’s good for everybody.
WOMAN: I’m Joe the plumber.
WOMAN: I’m Joe the plumber.
WOMAN: I’m Joe the plumber.
ANNCR: Spread the wealth?
MAN: I’m supposed to work harder…
MAN: Just to pay more taxes.
MAN: Obama wants my sweat to pay for his trillion dollars in new spending?
WOMAN: I’m Joe the plumber.
ANNCR: Barack Obama. Higher Taxes. More Spending. Not Ready.
The Spartacus theme resonates on a couple of different levels. First, we have everyone identifying with a beleaguered hero as a way of supporting him, but let’s also recall the circumstances of Spartacus. Spartacus led a rebellion of slaves against the government that oppressed them. Joe the Plumber has led a rebellion against an oppressive governing philosophy that erodes the notion of private property and would make taxpayers into serfs to the lords of Washington DC.
That kind of message resonates. People may want services from the federal government, but they don’t want outright redistributionism, where the government transfers cash from those who pay taxes to those who don’t. Barack Obama’s tax plan does just that.
McCain has been given three winning messages in the last few weeks of the campaign: the Democratic social engineering that led to the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac collapse, Joe Biden’s warning of international crises as a result of electing Obama, and Joe the Plumber. This ad is a good step forward in riding these three themes to Election Day.

Good ad. Should have run weeks ago. Does McCain have the ability to get this ad on the air? I had read that Obama and the Dems bought all the political advertising slots on all the broadcast networks from now until election day. I’m in northern Ohio (battleground central) and I don’t think I’ve seen a McCain ad on in about 4 days…

I am Joe the plumber!
If everyone understood Obama’s racist tax plan, he would be down 15 to 20 in the polls. If they knew everything he was all about, he would be down much more.

Count me in with the rest of the disillusioned/realistic conservatives when I state (sadly) that this ad won’t change a thing, no matter how true or “resonating” it is. With O’s 30 minute television pitch and a possible SNL appearance on 01 Nov (and associated coverage by the Tanning Bed Media), the sound bite electorate will go to the polls on 04 Nov with only one name on the tips of their fingers. We’re totally hosed.

Surely there are many Democrats who’d be happy to state, “I’m Joe the Dumber.”

Don’t give up – I firmly believe there’s still a game-changer out there, a final October surprise. The way they’ve stayed on the Ayres message, forcing Obama to continue modifying his relationship with Ayres, leads me to believe they have something, probably pictures or video, of Obama and Ayres together. Think about it, as tight as Obama and Ayres were, we’ve never seen a picture of them together. There has to be some pictures or video of these two together. Imagine a video of Obama and Ayres at a forum, with Obama handing the mike over to Ayres with a man-hug as they pass. Drop this on them like Gore dropped the Bush DUI the final weekend in 2000.

Don’t let up on Biden. Someone needs to pressure him to explain his statements. The media isn’t gonna do it.

Nice ad, but I still want to see one that mixes in regular people, Joe the Plumber, and Obama/Obama shills mocking Joe.
Question: During the half-hour Obama blocks will there be commercials? What if McCain had a killer 1 minute commercial within Obama’s time slot?
It doesn’t matter how long someone talks if you can sum up the stupidity of their logic in a 30 second song.

And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,
I will be brief. Obama is mad. . . .”—Shakespeare ;)

Already did-absentee ballot, which arrived LATE from my democrat town clerk- a full week after the deadline put out by my military voting office. Good news is that our post office is providing free USPS tracking, so I’ll see if/when it gets back in time. Not holding my breath, knowing that the dems will do everything they can to “disqualify” an overseas military ballot.

I’m totally disillusioned at this point, too. But I will say that I think it bad strategy for Obama to appear on SNL right before the election. Remember, he has a double digit lead in Gallup. He should be on prevent defense.
SNL isn’t funny — that’s why nobody watches them. That means they don’t have a well tuned humorist ear, and Lord knows Democrats don’t have good senses of humor overall. I think there’s a realistic chance that the skit could unintentionally paint Obama in a bad light, and a slight chance that Obama could gaffe on air. Why risk it? I think it’s just arrogance on Obama’s part.
Outlander on October 22, 2008 at 7:48 AM
Relax…have a cigar…all that 30 minute Obama infomercial is going to do is 1) give the Obamaniacs who are going to vote for him anyways warm fuzzies; 2) Bore people to tears; 3) Torque off sports fans who want to see the Rays crush the Phillies; 4) Be ignored as people turn it to something else.
People will see it for what it is–Obama’s ego on display and it’s going to turn people off.

I am an optimistic person. I started my own business, am doing well, and was an early supporter of McCain. I love, LOVE, Sarah Palin. Everytime see her speak I smile. I feel like she is “one of us” and has a chance to be president one day. I read HA and the polls everyday. I am a political junkie. I am caught between my heart (McCain eeks out victory) and my head (BO landlslide). I get the the feeling-like rotorhead-that these commercials don’t matter. Maybe there is something going on that we don’t know about…I hope so. And I do believe the race is winnable, but…My sense is that if something big doesn’t happen, this race is lost. After such an unsettling 8 years–mostly due to 9/11, Katrina, Iraq, and Fannie/Freddie, the country seems like it wants to feel good about itself. And that means electing BO.
My guess is that he will win, and the result will be similar to peeing in your pants on a cold day…it starts with a nice warm feeling, but you only end up cold and wet and miserable.
I hold out hope this year and have lots of optimism for 2012!

How about an ad with a regular guy/gal saying this:
“I don’t want money from those who have more than I have. This is America and I have the opportunity to earn my own way through hard, honest work. I’m insulted that Obama wants to ’spread the wealth’ around to folks like me. I’m voting for John McCain.”

This country was founded in large part by people who were willing to risk their lives in crossing an unforgiving ocean to an uncertain future. That risk taking entrepreneurial spirit has always played a large part in American society. And now, when Joe the Plumber wants to take a risk and better his life, Dear Leader Obamassiah wants to punish him by taking away the fruits of his labor.
Disgusting.

So, if Obama really does win, how many of us plan to just quit the 9-5 grind and stop feeding the monster? Just to shore up your memory of why this is important, here are a few favorite quotes from Ayn Rand. Her words seem a haunting presence in this election.
“The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody had decided not to see.”
“The man who lets a leader prescribe his course is a wreck being towed to the scrap heap.”
“We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force.”
“I swear by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, or ask another man to live for mine. “
MikeA on October 22, 2008 at 8:10 AM
Just in, Obama’s counter ad:
“We have nothing but love for Joe the Plumber, we know where he lives, and where his kids go to school.”
Ha ha funny.

I’m Mark the Programmer.
Thats where they need to take this commercial. Start with Joe, then move onto other people with their name and their job. Just a laundry list of regular people, with regular jobs. Pan out, show them cascading away from the camera. Thousands. Maybe a “Who are you?” tag line.
Samhain on October 22, 2008 at 8:14 AM
Joe Biden brought back to the forefront the reality that we are still fighting, (and winning) two wars, against an ideology that would see us all destroyed if they were capable. This nation would be better served if that 3am call to the WH is answered by John McCain.
Obama’s “spread the wealth” comment to Joe the plumber is resonating daily with an electorate that has little in their pockets and understands that if business is taxed, jobs will be eliminated. McCain needs to emphasize his “all of the above” energy policy that would put millions of Americans to work on American soil.
American’s are not afraid to work. They just won’t like Obama’s plan that sends more taxpayer dollars to the government for those who choose not to. Returning to the Carter era of a welfare state is the liberal’s dream come true.

I kind of wish someone could make this point:
We don’t all have the same amount of money, but we do all have the same amount of TIME: twenty-four hours a day. That is what our life is made of. Why should some people have to spend nearly HALF of each working day, half of their work life, earning the money to pay taxes that, under Obama’s plan, will go to people who don’t spend ONE MINUTE of their time paying for the services they receive from the government?
Involuntary servitude much?

Show them in the ad. Those three look like and represent America. A black woman immigrant from Antigua, Tito immigrant of Colombia, and the tall white man, whose name I don’t know. That will send a very powerful message.

It may not seem that way, but McCain is ahead and Obama is steadily sinking. Remember the early days of the Iraq War when we overran the country in a matter of days? Remember the pressers given by Baghdad Bob? His ludicrous denials of our presence there – even though our tanks were rumbling through the streets just outside the studio walls?
Try to look at it this way: Obama has been campaigning for over a year; he has a huge, well-run campaign machine; he’s spent nearly half a billion dollars on TV and radio ads in all 50 states; the Drive-By media is completely in the tank for him. And yet…the best he could manage in way of a lead right now is 5 points? THAT’S IT? Five crummy points? That isn’t even factoring the Bradley Effect – which his own campaign admits will shave a few points off the poll numbers. By all rights Obama should be 20 points ahead, but he’s jut about neck and neck with McCain.
Don’t listen to all that crap you hear in the Drive-By media – all of it is calculated to depress McCain voters and keep them from voting. The Drive-By media has become Baghdad Bob, rotorhead.
Go back to the top and watch the Joe The Plumber ad again. It resonates with ordinary working Americans, who are responding positively to the message.
McCain will win this November. At this point, Obama is losing more and more voters every day. The more votes he loses, the more desperate he’ll become. That Oct 29 informercial will ultimately backfire. He’s gonna lose.

The student government association here at Auburn held a mock election last night after hearing speeches from Rep. and Dem. congressmen.

Last November I witnessed John Howard being voted out of office in Australia and replaced by a Labor Party who has no clue how to handle the economy and is now going on a huge spending spree, unemployment is on the rise and John Howards budget surplus is slowly being eroded.
Barack Obama makes the Labor Party in Australia look like Noble prize winners.
The United States doesn’t have to repeat Australia’s mistake.
You have now less than two weeks to prevent this from happening. You may be pessimistic about the election now but just wait for another 12 months if Obama wins.

I guess I’m gonna have to start repeating myself: the Obama campaign has access to internal polling data that no one else ever sees. This data is scaring them shitless. Their attacks are becoming more intense and more reckless because they are getting desperate.
It will get worse for them over the next week and a half, culminating in a half-hour TV Obamathon that will backfire stupendously.
On Nov 4 Obama will go down like Titanic, leaving his supporters flailing in the cold waters of Lake Michigan.

Pessimistic people are always proven wrong.
The Obama propaganda machine is counting on republicans giving up so they can win big. We need to fight to the end, how many times we have seen the underdog defeat the strong team in the last minute. Democrats are worried about a repeat of the 2004 election. Just remember GW was down and by noon on Election Day the demo-rats and the MSM were claiming victory. Then by night time the story changed, we need to stay focus.
pukara61 on October 22, 2008 at 10:14 AM
My point is that Obama should be easy to hit. There is so much questionable about him, his past, his plans, etc. And McCain hasn’t laid a glove on him. A good ad won’t do any good because the mainstream media will just drown it out with overwhelming positive stories about Obama. And their fact checkers will tell us how the ad is wrong on the facts.
So its up to McCain. He is the only one that can turn this around and I don’t think he is capable of doing it. He needs deep convictions to make his case and I don’t think McCain has any deep convictions. He is a compromiser, not a leader.
Now getting 250,000 people to show up at a McCain/Palin rally would dwarf what Obama did. It would show the American people that McCain is still in this. It would do more than any 30 second ad.

Four winning messages, Ed. FOUR.
The fourth message is one I haven’t seen. If Joe the Plumber and Ed the Dairyman is taxed, that means they have to raise their prices.
The poor will have to pay more for eggs, milk, meat, gas, heating, everything. When Obama raises taxes on the rich, the poor are the ones that will suffer the most. How far does your check from Obama go when you’re paying $5.00 a gallon for gas and $5.00 a gallon for milk?
Everyone who makes under $250,000 a year, you are Joe the Plumber too!

Because unlike the majority of people posting here, the general electorate is uneducated about the man, where he came from, who he learned from, what he stands for and the history of socialism. Many of those that DO know these things simply don’t care because of some vague notion of “hope and change”. Rather than make an educated decision, they’ll vote off of 30 second sound bites that favor him while showing any conservative (let alone McCain) in a negative light. George Carlin was right- stupid, lazy people will vote in stupid lazy politicians, or worse. In this case, much worse. The only hope I have is that despite O spending half a billion or so, he’s still only up a few in most polls.
rotorhead on October 22, 2008 at 12:35 PM
Have faith in the commonsense of your fellow Americans.
I remember hearing that “no one” voted for Reagan and he was elected to two terms. Then “no one” voted for Bush W. and he was re-elected, despite having his first term hi-jacked by 9/11.
On my cul-de-sac in liberal SoCal there are now 3 Obama signs and no McCain signs, but I know for a fact that at least 3 of the families on this block are Republicans. We don’t have signs because we live on a cul-de-sac near a neighborhood park and are surrounded by intolerant liberals — we don’t want our cars keyed. I really think there are a lot of people who are not responding to pollsters (or PUMA/Hillary supporters who lie to pollsters), but who are going to vote McCain-Palin on election day.
I have gotten discouraged some times, too, but when I step back from things and reflect on the popular support Palin has received, read the efforts that the PUMAs are making, and think about Rush’s huge listening audience, I believe McCain-Palin will win.
Do yourself a favor and read Rush’s site, as well as Hillbuzz, each day.

Yep. I’ve stopped my St. Vincent de Paul charity work. It is just too depressing in that the disintegrated families leave our typical female, black, divorced/single, not receiving child support, mother, overweight, diabetic, unemployable, client. I just can’t get myself to work these cases anymore because I believe we are reinforcing vice rather than pushing the Gospel. Our conference has been so focused on material needs and reinforcing dependency, and NOT reaching out to the souls of people. Obviously, I’m not the President of our chapter. It’s just dead. Our people we visit have little hope or dignity.
Sapwolf on October 22, 2008 at 1:51 PM
There is no doubt about it. The media is doing its hardest to portray the election as a blowout to not only discourage voter turnout by McCain voters, but to assist in Obama’s margin of victory to dispel the obvious voter fraud for O-man and to portray it as a watershed election or mandate.
Don’t let this guy win. And don’t let him in the WH easily.
Fight this one to the end, because even if he were to win, we need to defeat him or at least make it so close that it can be questioned.
Sapwolf on October 22, 2008 at 1:58 PM
If McCAin can get past the notion of many Americans that rich people {whoever Obama deems that to be} made their money off of the backs of the poor and so they owe it to the poor to give it back..he might get some traction with this.
