IBD: Let’s elect a tested President instead

posted at 9:45 am on October 22, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Investors Business Daily recalls the election of Ronald Reagan in analyzing Joe Biden’s warning about electing an untested, inexperienced politician to the White House.  When Reagan took office, one of America’s enemies took his measure — and retreated quickly:

An early sign of the coming greatness of the Reagan presidency was that within an hour of the former actor’s taking the oath of office, the Ayatollah Khomeini’s Islamofascist regime in Iran released the 52 U.S. hostages it had been holding for 444 days.

Somehow, Ronald Reagan’s lack of foreign policy experience didn’t give Tehran the impression it would be a good idea to find out what he was made of; the mullahs already knew.

So why does Democratic vice-presidential nominee Sen. Joseph Biden think it’s such a good idea to advertise that within months of taking office a President Obama would be faced with “a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy”?

What Biden is saying is that either Iran or al-Qaida or Russia or perhaps North Korea will launch some kind of attack on America or American interests abroad to feel out the new president.  And that this, presumably, would be practice for a more ambitious move against us later.

Obama, IBD points out, likes to use John F Kennedy in his speeches by quoting his inaugural address: “We should never negotiate out of fear, but we should never fear to negotiate.”  Kennedy put that idea into play by demanding a summit with Nikita Khrushchev five months later, less than 60 days after Kennedy botched the Bay of Pigs.  Kennedy utterly failed in the Vienna Summit and brough the US closer to nuclear war than anytime before or since.

And Kennedy dealt with a rational enemy in 1961.  What kind of signals would Barack Obama send the apocalyptic Iranian mullahcracy in his drive to hold a summit with no preconditions with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?  Would they also see him as a weakling and start a war with Israel as a result?  Or would they just be content to only multiply their efforts in supporting terrorism in the region and conclude they could get Obama to withdraw American assets from the Middle East by pushing us out?

Michael Ramirez, IBD’s two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, sums this up perfectly:

Why take the chance at all?  Why not just elect the man that sends a message of strength and tenacity to both enemies and allies abroad?  The last thing America needs at the moment is to send a signal of potential weakness to either.

Addendum: Don’t forget to buy Michael Ramirez’ excellent new book, Everyone Has the Right to My Opinion. You can read my review of it here. As of this morning, it was #392 on Amazon — let’s get that up to the top 10, where it belongs.

This is why we see so many reports about how much the rest of the world wants to see Obama win; and about how scared they are of McCain. They pray for a weakened America, and Obama is the best hope they have for that change.

MikeA on October 22, 2008 at 9:54 AM

Why does Biden assume that Obama’s “mettle” will withstand the tests in the way that he probably thinks Americans hope it would (i.e. stands up to Iran/Russia, etc).

What if Obama’s true strength is to never ever be lulled into a conflict? To never ever respond to an attack on the US, no matter how massive or destructive? To never ever come to the aid of a US ally under mortal threat?

Is that what Biden really means? It would seem so when he states that Obama would become really unpopular? How so? Under what possible scenario could the US response to a crises be deeply unpopular? Oh, maybe like a president who thought the US was in danger and invaded another country that made us safe but ultimately destroyed his popularity amoung the fickle mall-shopping masses?

Oh, My GOD. OBAMA IS GOING TO INVADE IRAN!!!!

As I said before, the rest of the world is miserable & misery loves company. They’d love nothing better than to see us fall. Jealous & petty they don’t like seeing us do well.
If that ever happens-God forbid-they will soon regret their wish. No one will be left to bail their a$$e$ out of trouble.

Man, that torpedo from Joe into the hull of the SS Obama did more damage than we thought.

Vashta.Nerada on October 22, 2008 at 9:59 AM

Barack will not last a full term as president.

If he screws up enough, particularly since there will likely be something made of the connections between him and federally-indicted RICO violator ACORN, eventually the libs will turn on him.

I suspect this thought will resonate deeply with many voters when they close the curtain behind them on election day. A great many fingers will pause for a moment over Obama’s name and then move to McCain – a known quantity they can trust.

As part of the inauguration, He should have those 300 advisors “go to the mattresses” at the White House. They will need to be on call 24/7, for the testing Joe mentioned.

billypaintbrush on October 22, 2008 at 10:02 AM

Waterboy on October 22, 2008 at 9:54 AM

What I think Biden meant was that Obama will pull the troops out of the middle east, making Israel vulnerable to the inevitable attack from Iran, and also make Saudi Arabia vulnerable to regime change by wahabbists, which will make $4.00 gasoline look cheap. Both things will be unpopular, but are necessary to remake the world in the ‘proper’ image.

Vashta.Nerada on October 22, 2008 at 10:03 AM

The libs may “turn on him” but he will have to do something pretty catastrophic and it won’t be Rezko or ACORN related as they are well aware of that stuff. If they go after Obama it will because he has failed to prevent or failed to respond to a calamity…which is what Biden is hinting at.

It would have been better for everyone if they had taken the time to look critically at Obama’s ideas, associations and record, but they have been too starstruck for that.

clnurnberg on October 22, 2008 at 10:03 AM

Obaby at the wheel…

wasn’t it Slublog @ Ace that pictured Obama as the punk kid who steals his dad’s pickup for a joyride thinking it looked so easy to drive…until the collision.

There’s nothing accidental about the prediction based upon factual contextual data.

Biden, Albright and Powell in unison pronounce Obama the idiot. It’s as though they’re counting on the “right” rejecting everything they say in the opposite game play for the Left to twist support from the Right. Convoluted logic is their realm. They count on their prophesy to buy them America’s forgiveness when all hell breaks loose given Oval Obama in Office.

I wonder who enemies of the US would really like to see elected. Think about it. Would Iran test Obama knowing that he really would pull the trigger to prove that he wasn’t a weakling?

One of my favorite lines from the movie Nixon was “..the President of the United States doesn’t threaten…he doesn’t have to”. I think Iran/Russia count on the US being able to accept spitballs without going batsh*t crazy on their *sses. With Obama, he’s like the skinny kid that no one is quite sure if he’ll go mental and crack you in the head with a bat because you knocked his books over the floor during assembly hall.

I have some British friends that I regularly email. Both are in their late 60s, both conservative. The wife likes John McCain, the husband, Senator Gubment. I have been having a lively discussion w/husband about our election season. He’s most concerned about Mac’s age. I’m most concerned about Obama’s. I’ve asked him, does the world really want a weakend US and a stronger Russia and China? Really? Really? He hasn’t answered that one yet, but he is most certainly pro-American. He is disgusted by all of the rampant anti-AMericanism in the UK and all of their immigrants sponging off of the “free” entitlements. I’ve told him that is exactly what Obama wants to bring to us.

I’m waiting for his next email…

Why take the chance at all? Why not just elect the man that sends a message of strength and tenacity to both enemies and allies abroad?

He also sends the message of “international cooperation will have to wait”

When you preface your ideas on Russia with, “lets kick them out of the G8″ you can guarantee our relationship with Russia will not improve. We need to focus on our shared interests if we wish to take the world off of the brink we find outselves on. Im not saying McCain is a warmonger who just wants death and destruction…all im saying is that its pretty much a fact that McCain will not make serious attempts to bridge differences between us and so called “evil” nations.

We NEED constant engagement with places like Russia and China. China holds the keys to North Korea and the worlds industrial base…Russia holds the keys to our strongest ally’s energy. We need to be thinking about what interests we share and where we can cooperate, not how to isolate nations. Isolation didnt stop North Korea or Iran during Bush’s term…I cannot see how further isolation and belligerence is supposed to produce different results…unless you all like where the world is right now.

Its not over by a long stretch. The election has not really happened yet and here we are planning as if we’ve lost. I just don’t think the right cards are being played. Complaining about Obomba and his croanies isnt getting it. The correct information isnt getting to the VOTERS either. alf the ballots may as well be phonies. “Osama bin Laden/al-Qaeda or bust”

OK, I’ve changed my pants because I wet them.

Let me keep it simple for you. The basic arguement here is that Obama is more “dangerous” (take that for what you will) precisely because the enemies of the US do not know how he will act based on the advice of the 35,000 advisors that he’ll have on video conference during a crisis. He’s a blank slate. We didn’t say this on this thread, Biden did. So did Hillary. And Albright.

Do you honestly think that other world leaders don’t have a general idea what McCain would do in a given situation based on his past history (for good or bad)? That’s the point here in case you missed it.

Just look at Obama’s statements over the past 9 months! You tell me what Obama’s foreign policy will be (however, if you use the word “Engagement” in your response, you lose.)

He never said it did. He was talking about resolve. As in, “I am hear on the deck of this aircraft carrier as a volunteer. Do I pack it in or go home.”

As in “I am a POW who can get a free ticket home whenever I want…so I stay or go”.

The problem is that whenever McCain touts his own personal experiences, Obama and/or his surrogates take it as a challange to Obama’s own personal courage or fortitude. That in itself says more about Obama and his supporters than anything else.

Russia should be kicked out of the G8 because of their misbehavior. If bad behavior has no consequences, why should the Russians stop it?

We are engaged with the Russians, and other countries. Unless you, like most liberals, define engagement as giving away everything first.

McCain is far greater a risk with his proud claims of being a maverick and going against the grain and the party.

So, no, the rest of the world does NOT have a better idea of what Mr Rufflefeathers McCain would do.

Dave Rywall on October 22, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Obama is NOT a loose cannon? You don’t know that. No one knows anything about NancyBoy b/c he has no record to run on. He has 300 advisors, yet no coherent foreign policy. McCain schooled him on Russia, Georgia and Crimea during the debates. Talk about wetting ones self.

The rest of world does have a better understanding of what McCain is about b/c of his past voting record, statements and foreign policy initiatives outlined in this campaign and others. McCain is for strong national defense. A strong military. Strong US in the world, not tolerating aggressive actions by Russia or China against allies and US interests. Engagement w/enemies is crucial but most certainly not w/out preconditions and certainly not at a presidential level. And McCain won’t telegraph his next move. He’s been tested time and again. He went to the War College. He is more qualified than OBambi will ever be even twenty years from now. His knowledge of the world and our history is so evident and you sir, are so willfully blind.

Biden, and Obama make Obama sound like a loose canon.

You just get upset when anyone points out that your emperor has no clothes.

MarkTheGreat on October 22, 2008 at 10:53 AM

Ha ha…hey, canons are black, and…

RACIST!!

Waterboy on October 22, 2008 at 10:56 AM

The cartoon should have had Kerry(Sec.State)and Hagel(Se.Def.)in the back seat clutching each other in fear. What a quartet that will be if Obambi should win.

sheriff246 on October 22, 2008 at 11:03 AM

Obama’s foreign policy (at long last):

Russia: Don’t invade anyone. If you do, show restraint

Iran: Don’t build a nuke. If you do, we’ll increase our engagement to mind-numbingly boring levels

Chavez: I’m not the boss of him

China: I can see China from my grandma’s house in Hawaii

Israel: Two-state solution (Israel get’s the parts below ground)

Waterboy on October 22, 2008 at 11:05 AM

You have no way of knowing which candidate the terrorists would prefer, nor o you have any idea how McCain or Obama would react to any crisis, because neither of them have ever been in the position. McCain sitting in a jet on an aircraft carrier waiting for orders does not count as making tough decisions in the face of a crisis. – Dave Rywall on October 22, 2008 at 10:17 AM

Review McCain’s military career. It consisted of much more than sitting in a jet fighter on the deck of a carrier. Obama has no military experience – at least Kennedy commanded a PT boat in the war. Nevertheless, Kennedy’s foreign policy was a disaster (Bay of Pigs, Vienna Summit) mitigated only by the fact tha we barely managed to avoid nuclear war (Missile Crisis).

McCain is an older, wiser man with considerable political experience and wisdom. Obama is a young neophyte with less national political experience than Kennedy had.

McCain has made it pretty clear by now that his foreign policy will be a Reagan redux. His long tenure in politics left a voluminious paper trail that anyone can peruse to understand how he thinks.

Obama has no paper trail. At all. Hs transcripts, theses – even his medical records – are all sealed. Other than what he has said in public during his campaign and told us in his 2 books, we have no idea how or what he tinks. The man is a complete cipher. What he has told about about his foreign policy intentions makes it clear that he’ll be a Jimmy Carter redux.

And we all know how well THAT went, don’t we?

Sorry, Dave. Unless you are being wilfully obtuse, even you have to admit that our enemies would much rather have Obama in the White House than McCain.

ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 11:05 AM

Uh guys, someone has sabotaged McCain’s bio on Wiki. Anyone know how to report or change it? I’ve emailed the campaign.

Here’s how it starts out:

John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is a compulsive cocksucker that cannot keep his pruny hands off of small children and is the senior United States Senator from Arizona and presidential nominee of the Republican Party in the 2008 presidential election.

A liberal’s definition of engagement is a meeting with Gavin Newsom at City Hall.

US Military Dictionary: engagement
n. a fight or battle between armed forces.

We are engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan. Russia, Iran, Syria, et all, really don’t care to be engaged with John McCain. They would rather be at a bridal shower with Obama.

Rovin on October 22, 2008 at 11:15 AM

The entire bio is rife w/crappy insinuations as well. Like I said, I emailed the campaign. They should threaten them w/libel today.

Actually–that was the way Fox News reported it last night.

I would disagree, but only in that Obama’s lack of a paper trail only obscures what a catastrophe his policies will always be. I don’t think he will get any better with age.
Dave wants to paint a picture of a crazed psychopath hiding behind the doormat, but the reality is Obama has been selling doormat and toady to the rest of the world. Our enemies are not going to “test” him, they are going to try to take advantage of the weakness he is advertising. 9/11 was not a test of Bush, it was an attack on the people of the US to take advantage of a weakness of the US people that the Clinton years had convinced bin Laden was there.

Clinton only got 40% of the vote – it just happened to be enough that time.

I see Drybalzz is back. He isn’t worth commenting on. I remember the Cuban Crisis. My mom and dad were very scared, as was a lot of people. Maybe we are lucky that Biden opened his mouth. Maybe he is having second thoughts of being NOBAMA’s VP. I believe that McCain would handle a crisis if one came up. He is not a wimp. And true, we don’t know how one would handle a situation. But McCain would do the right thing. I do remember when Clinton let Bin Laden go. So glad I didn’t vote for Clinton in the first nor the second election. I can smell a rat when he is out of his cage.

sheebe on October 22, 2008 at 11:47 AM

When a desperate McCain tries it, why sure, of course, he’s ready to be president right now, and that other guy, no way…

Do you really wonder why the Captain and Tennille aren’t selling…

sanguine4 on October 22, 2008 at 10:13 AM

Where do you people come from? Under a rock?

John McCain spent 6 years in a POW camp and survived. He learned his lesson from the Keating scandal.

Hillary has never been tested like that.

And Obama is a vile scumbag Chicago politician who pals around with unrepentant terrorists, slum lord thieves, black supremest pastors, and people involved in voter fraud.

The level of obtuseness you have reached is staggering.

The best answer came from Bolton when he appeared on H&C the other night: Colmes was whining about how Osama Obama (rightfully) wants to talk to the enemies of America, and Bolton replied, “what is he going to say?”

That’s the nut of the whole thing. An inexperienced, Marxist fool whose mind has to have been clouded by his associations (Ayers, Odinga, et al) won’t have much to say other than the same frothy platitudes about “hope” and “change” he has been mouthing on the campaign trail. Moreover, having weakened the military — as he has said he’ll do — and sent a clear message by cutting and running in Iraq, he will already have telegraphed his “punches.”

We’ll soon find out, won’t we? The trolls of the nation seem set to get their way, and have as president a man who will plunge the nation into a modern Dark Ages (yeah, I know, that’s racist) of capitulation, financial ruin and totalitarianism.

MrScribbler on October 22, 2008 at 12:17 PM

And Kennedy dealt with a rational enemy in 1961. What kind of signals would Barack Obama send the apocalyptic Iranian mullahcracy in his drive to hold a summit with no preconditions with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? Would they also see him as a weakling and start a war with Israel as a result?

Yes. Israel will have to fend for itself if Obama wins.

Obama won’t win.

Y-not on October 22, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Why take the chance at all? Why not just elect the man that sends a message of strength and tenacity to both enemies and allies abroad?

Because at least when America is attacked, we’ll all have free gubmint healthcare to treat us and a $300 check to start replacing the thousands we lost in our investments.
