Why has Biden taken a day off the trail?

posted at 8:55 am on October 21, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

According to campaign sources, Joe Biden has no events planned for today — despite the election being only two weeks away.  What happened?  Could Team Obama have pulled Slow Joe off the trail after telling people that Barack Obama’s election would provoke our enemies into a confrontation with us, and maybe more than one?

Bill Kristol interprets Biden’s comments not as perceived weakness, but as Biden predicting a weak response to any provocation:

Biden expects a test of the kind Kennedy faced after his disastrous meeting with Khrushchev in Vienna in June, 1961, less than five months into Kennedy’s presidency. Biden’s presumably thinking of the Soviet-backed construction of the Berlin Wall a couple of months later. Kennedy did nothing, and was criticized for his weakness back home.

So–leaving aside the merits of what Kennedy did or didn’t do in 1961–Biden is forecasting that Obama will have what seems to be a weak response to a provocation from, say, Iran or Russia, and he’s urging the liberals of Seattle and elsewhere to stand with Obama against the expected domestic criticism.

In other words, Biden is forecasting inaction by Obama in the face of testing by a dictator. I suspect he’s right in this forecast. McCain might want to clarify this point. It’s not just that Obama’s own running mate expects an international crisis early in his presidency. It’s not just that Obama has a weak foreign policy record. It’s that Biden himself expects what will appear to be a weak response from Obama to testing by a dictator.

I’m not sure why this will surprise anyone.  I’ve said for months that Obama would serve the second term of the Jimmy Carter administration on both economics and foreign policy.  Carter’s inaction on Afghanistan and Iran certainly worked out well for us, didn’t it?  Both gave rise to Islamic fundamentalism, and eventually forced us to go to war to fight it at great cost and difficulty.

We could have snuffed out the Iranian mullahcracy in its infancy after the sacking of our embassy, an explicit act of war which Carter left unanswered.  That would qualify as a test of a President viewed as weak, and who confirmed it in the face of a provocation that consisted of an open act of war.  Had we acted, the Soviets would probably not have risked the invasion of Afghanistan, which would have ironically saved them a lot of money and heartache but would also have avoided the creation of al-Qaeda.

Team Obama need not worry about Biden’s gaffes.  The media has all but buried the relevant portions of Biden’s offering.  Consider this report from MS-NBC’s Andrea Mitchell yesterday, from John Ziegler:

ANDREA MITCHELL: …Sunday McCain’s long-time friend Colin Powell endorsed Obama and criticized the choice of Sarah Palin.

COLIN POWELL, ON MEET THE PRESS: I don’t believe she’s ready to be President of the United States, which is the job of the Vice President.MITCHELL: Powell could boost Obama’s foreign policy credentials. But today the McCain camp seized on something Joe Biden said, that Oama would be tested in his first months in office.

AUDIO OF JOE BIDEN: They’re going to want to test him, just like they did young John Kennedy. They’re going to want to test him. And they’re going to find out this guy’s got steel in his spine.

JOHN McCAIN: We don’t want a President who invites testing from the world at a time when our economy is in crisis.

MITCHELL: Meanwhile, McCain’s running mate, fighting the image war, confronted her double on Saturday Night Live…

That leaves out quite a bit from the clip:

It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking…. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy….

I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate… And he’s gonna need help. And the kind of help he’s gonna need is, he’s gonna need you – not financially to help him – we’re gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it’s not gonna be apparent initially, it’s not gonna be apparent that we’re right.

In fact, the media used a portion of a different speech rather than repeat the actual Biden gaffe.  So, perhaps, Team O can remove the gag from Biden and allow him back out onto the campaign trail.  With the help of the Tanning Bed Media, Team O has nothing to fear from its running mate.

What did you know and when did you know it.

If Ocommie and his dundering sidekick win, and we get attacked as dumbass here seems to be alluding to, there sure as hell better be Special Forces guys storming the White House and removing these pukes from office.

The games these two fools are playing, with our economy and with our security, isn’t funny anymore. It’s getting dangerous.

Joe Biden…the gift that keeps on giving.

And our MSM…propaganda tool of the Obama campaign and the Democratic Party. Their shilling here will not be forgiven or forgotten by the American people…too blatant…to obnoxious. The American people are a generally forgiving and generous lot, but it does have limits, and the MSM has crossed the line in a very real and permanent way. It will never be trusted again.

Team Obama need not worry about Biden’s gaffes. The media has all but buried the relevant portions of Biden’s offering. Consider this report from MS-NBC’s Andrea Mitchell yesterday, from John Ziegler:

Wow that’s really disgusting. I’m still amazed how far they are going to cover for Obama.

To be fair though, as dopey as Biden can be with gaffes I think Biden is saying “be prepared, we’re gonna get tested and we’re gonna have to come off as real hard asses to let people know they cant f*(* with us”. i.e. Obama will need to PROVE he’s no wuss (hi to you Cuban missile crisis!), whereas presumably McCain would not have such issues. So he’s prepping the base for actions Obama might need to take that seem like the dreaded Bush, Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld contingent would come up with.

Where is the RNC or McCain or 527 ad showing this idiot running his mouth about the weakling who beat him – and Hillary – out of the democrat nomination. Heck, Hillary should get some of her friends to run the ad.

About the only thing that soothes my nerves about the horrible Andrea Mitchell is that she is at least regularly punished by having to see Alan Greenspan naked. Of course, poor Alan has it tougher. Ugh.

Surely, at some point, even the most insulated elites at NBC have to realize how biased they’ve become? Non???

I expect a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth on November 5th, culminating into such a mass liberal exodus from this country, testing out “border fences” and causing an international crisis, mostly because people in other countries are forced to watch Rosie O’Donald and listen to Andrea Mitchell during PMS episodes.

I’m firmly convinced there is not a Democrat politician with more than two brain cells to rub together.

This has got to be the most dimwitted collection of boneheads ever assembled for the purpose of creating legislation.

Effeminate, corrupt and incredibly stupid – that describes what passes for the “men” in the Democrat Party, completely.

Even Democrat women are more manly than what passes for Democrat men but for some reason, that doesn’t breed confidence.

Palin should start using this immediately on the campaign trail. She should hammer home with one her trademark jibes that Obama’s own VP doesn’t think he is up to the job in foreign policy. This is a great opening for her to neutralise any of her percieved weakness on foreign policy issues.

Just thought of this: Biden urged the followers to keep the faith when the birth pangs of the Apocalypse start. Will the media, who will have vaulted The One over the finish line, begin to turn on him, criticise his every move, tear into him because he is not paying enough attention to their concerns, not having enough news conferences, relying on more experienced operators due to his inexperience…..?

Sure, they will – NOT

InTheBellyoftheBeast on October 21, 2008 at 9:26 AM

For all of the media squawking about how Governor Palin has avoided the press, no one cares to pursue how Biden has been conspicuously absent from press conferences and interviews for over a month.

Biden’s unguarded remarks were made in a supposed safety zone of big-dollar supporters. That they leaked to the general public is a boon for us all.

Biden must be secreted in a bunker with Michelle O, indulging in caviar and lobster as they reminisce over how tough they have had it in life before Obama came in to sweep them off their feet.

Morning Joe on MSNBC this morning said that the Obama campaign is simply furious with Biden and pulled him off the trail.

broker1 on October 21, 2008 at 9:45 AM

Isn’t Biden saying to the voters:
“Vote for Obama, I GUARANTEE that the U.S. or one of her allies will be attacked somehow, somewhere in the first 6 months of an Obama/Biden administration!
And if you vote early and vote often, I also guarantee Obama will bungle the response to the attack.”

———
And since Biden sits on the Senate committee for Foreign Relations, does he have inside information about a major threat we don’t know?

ND, I usually agree with every word you write, but I disagree here. There certainly are plentiful examples of dimwit Democrat politicians, but there are plenty of smart ones too. Smart in an evil genius sort of way.

They’ve figured out that when you sum the portion of the population with below average intelligence together with the lazy and corrupt your result is a solid majority, and they don’t have to do anything but rob a minority of highly productive citizens to buy the majority support.

Democrat voters on the otherhand are mostly morons.

I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate

Only four or five? Hmmm….wonder what they will be? Obama better start on the bench press exercises to get ready for some under-the-bus throwin’ of our allies:

1. Iran/Israel: Obama throws Israel under the bus
2. Syria annexes northern Lebannon: Obama throws pre-Western government under the bus
3. Russia topples pro-Western Georgian government: Obama throws…
4. Russia topples pro-Western Ukranian government: Obama throws…
5. Unknown: Biden however would know since he “knows more about foreign policy than most people have forgotten”

I read it elsewhere, but it rang true immediately. As for Jews still supporting Obama, I’ll take a guess and say that the percentages won’t be as high as customary, but still a majority. As for why, call it cognitive dissonance, leading to mental gridlock. Those who live and breathe liberalism are being confronted with something dangerous coming out of the very thing they love.

In other words, a vote against Obama is a vote against what you’ve preached your whole life. Jews are being collectively “mugged by reality” as they say. Good. A few more might wake up :)

I still say Obama is a better option than Hillary!

Hillary! is a sneaky collectivist. She hides Saul Alinsky’s hickeys behind turtleneck sweaters and red plaid lumberjack shirts.

Obama is telling us pretty clearly what he’s up to. Whitey is gonna get some payback, and the Bill of Rights is on the table. He and Nancy and Harry are gonna have a mini constitutional convention without our consent.

I think Biden was simply telegraphing that Obama is gonna do some stuff that will look very unconstitutional, and therefore the dems will be counting on the media to “gird their loins” which means to circle the wagons. Maybe start weening us off the idea of private property. Stuff like that.

Joe was speechless for the first time in his career it was reported back to me.

Over.

Was it Michelle who first coined the term gaff-tastic?

You have to love ole Xerox Joe. And you just know that after an Obama win and banishment of all conservatives, he’s going to be the media’s b#tch.

Does it contain one of George Carlin’s 7 words?

Even as a sub-string?

Obama is a wuss and that he will be run over by the bully on the playground and have his lunch our tax money taken away everyday.

I remember a brief article a month or so ago where Biden advised certain officals from Isreal to “get used to the idea of a nuclear Iran”. Only saw it once… never heard of it again. Why should we get used to the idea of a nuclear Iran? I live in southwest Florida, I think my fellow Floridians on the other side of the state would be VERY interested in Joe’s comments on that topic.

Yeah, that’s the thing. Normally I keep my speech clean as a whistle, but some of the, uh, hogwash that’s taking place in this, uh, upsetting election has me, uh, steamed.

Folks, legal technicality it looks like, but Obama had 30 days to answer the Berg allegations, and his lawyers have not.

This is a legal admission that Berg’s facts are correct if I read this correctly, and Berg has, as of last night, put papers into court citing this…

Now Obama is flying to Hawaii, and Biden is not doing Campaign spots?

Intersting timing….

Romeo13 on October 21, 2008 at 10:31 AM

You can bet Biden butt is as red as his face after being spanked by Obama’s handlers.
Taking the little boy to the shed and teaching him a lesson…how embarrassing for the “man a heart beat away from the president”, being spanked for shooting off his mouth.

right2bright on October 21, 2008 at 10:45 AM

Ol Joe (da Senator) needs to have same-day surgery to have his foot again taken out of his mouth. The chosen one, is on his way to Hawaii to be with his ailing grandmother which is the right thing to do.

However, any bets this will turn into a family event/reunion that Obama workers will turn this moment into a media event. But, if this occurs will his destitute brother from Kenya show up, will his mother show up, will any of his skeletons show up?

That site you linked to is very professional and authoritative. I’ve been watching this story for months. Tks for the link. There were many facts there, for once.

JiangxiDad on October 21, 2008 at 11:19 AM

The Peter Principle:

The Peter Principle is the principle that “In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence.” While formulated by Dr. Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull in their 1968 book The Peter Principle, a humorous treatise which also introduced the “salutary science of Hierarchiology”, “inadvertently founded” by Peter, the principle has real validity. It holds that in a hierarchy, members are promoted so long as they work competently. Sooner or later they are promoted to a position at which they are no longer competent (their “level of incompetence”), and there they remain. Peter’s Corollary states that “in time, every post tends to be occupied by an employee who is incompetent to carry out his duties” and adds that “work is accomplished by those employees who have not yet reached their level of incompetence”.

Does it apply to elected office?

Akzed on October 21, 2008 at 11:24 AM

Akzed on October 21, 2008 at 11:24 AM

Nope, because your initial “Job” in elected office has nothing to do with competance, just popularity… so its a Peter Principal based on popularity… not success.

You go as high as your popularity takes you… and no higher.

Now, Congress, once your in, works on a weird type of seniority for Committees and such… so there as long as your in, you will progress… thus its a Peter Principal based on how LONG you can fool your constituents (or at least enough to remain in office).

Romeo13 on October 21, 2008 at 11:30 AM

Botox Joe Biden…the GOP’s Mancurian candidate. Bwhahahhahahaha! (seriously, what’s up with his eyebrows…looks like someone has pinned his ears back)

Talk radio and the Web needs to beat this gaffe into the heads of the general public immediately. The MSM will try and bury it ASAP, thus securing their position as whores to The One.

“The One” isn’t in Hawaii just yet, and that doesn’t make sense either. His “Gravely Ill” Grandma but he’s waiting till Thursday to go ….

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm
