Video: Ref tackles South Carolina quarterback

posted at 12:20 pm on October 21, 2008 by Allahpundit

It’s not fundamentally sound — he hits high, not low, and there’s no attempt to wrap him up — but as “ineligible personnel inexplicably and egregiously interfering with play” clips go, it’s a keeper. Insert it in the lowlight reel between Terrible Terry Tate’s hit on Palin and that cop taking down a bicyclist in New York.

The SEC claims it’s perfectly innocent, that the ref got crossed up in trying to get out of the way. I say: Check out that forearm action. Exit question: What happened here? And is it relevant that the ref used to be a linebacker for Kentucky?

What a perfect metaphor for the MSM this election cycle.

You know, the ones who called the McCain campaign’s complaints during the Palin Witch-Burning an attempt to “work the refs.”

ClintACK on October 21, 2008 at 12:22 PM

Laughed my ass off when I saw this. The only thing better is when a ref takes a pass to the head.

BadgerHawk on October 21, 2008 at 12:23 PM

It’s like watching a NYC cop tackle a cyclist.

Kini on October 21, 2008 at 12:23 PM

Brought down by a 50 year old guy… I’ll bet the SC quarterback want this video GONE!

originalpechanga on October 21, 2008 at 12:23 PM

I wonder how much he had on the game.

TheBigOldDog on October 21, 2008 at 12:24 PM

I saw this earlier on the news. 3 different shots. 2 shots looked like he went in for a hit and the other looked as though he was reflecting the hit. Either way, in all the shots the QB looked up at him like WTF!

upinak on October 21, 2008 at 12:24 PM

WTF, the ref followed the running back and gave him the shoulder.

Metaphor alert: the RB is our economy and the ref is Obarky.

Bishop on October 21, 2008 at 12:25 PM

The Jets should sign that ref.

Mr. Bingley on October 21, 2008 at 12:25 PM

Come on! Clearly he wanted to play and not just observe.

kerrhome on October 21, 2008 at 12:25 PM

I have to side with the REF.

I’m a huge LSU fan. Have you seen them play this year. They need all the help they can get.

GEAUX LSU!

Virginia Shanahan on October 21, 2008 at 12:25 PM

What a perfect metaphor for the MSM this election cycle.

ClintACK on October 21, 2008 at 12:22 PM

You are so right! Intentionally blowing calls isn’t enough. Now they are actually blocking and tackling.

TheBigOldDog on October 21, 2008 at 12:26 PM

LMAO! New ‘Buffalo Wild Wings’ commercial

OSUBuciz1 on October 21, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Too slow, Grue… :)

Grue in the Attic on October 21, 2008 at 12:28 PM

That is awesome!

CP on October 21, 2008 at 12:28 PM

I’ll bet Spurrier was fuming when he saw that. The visor sailed into the stands.

AubieJon on October 21, 2008 at 12:29 PM

Wow…. guy stepped into the hit… did not even try to get out of the way…

Ref should be fired.

Romeo13 on October 21, 2008 at 12:29 PM

This was a Bud Light commercial, you clowns.

Dave Rywall on October 21, 2008 at 12:30 PM

That ref was just trying to help spread the wealth around. Why should only certain players get the chance to make a tackle. You people are elitist. And Gamecocks? So you all are bloodthirsty enough to want to see animals fight? Don’t worry your corrupt and illegal regime is about to fall.

/channeling Dave Rywall.

rbj on October 21, 2008 at 12:31 PM

tht was very obvious. unbelievable.

Roger Waters on October 21, 2008 at 12:31 PM

It looks like there were 3 LSU players closing in on him. I think the QB needs to thank the ref for saving him from some serious punishment. Consider it a mercy tackle.

Just A Grunt on October 21, 2008 at 12:31 PM

The SEC claims it’s perfectly innocent, that the ref got crossed up in trying to get out of the way.

Bollocks! He went after him. He wasn’t trying to get out of the way…he was lining him up.

Blaise on October 21, 2008 at 12:31 PM

If you watch it, the ref sidestepped all the way over, shadowing the QB’s movements, and then he threw a forearm. Granted, the QB should have plowed him under, but that is a big ref.

The ref should at least be suspended while the SEC finds out if he had any money on the game.

AubieJon on October 21, 2008 at 12:32 PM

This was a Bud Light commercial, you clowns.

Dave Rywall on October 21, 2008 at 12:30 PM

The SEC doesn’t play by Canadian rules. And dont’t you have a dental appointment you’ve been waiting 7 months for?

AubieJon on October 21, 2008 at 12:34 PM

It looks like a clearly executed move to me and well done too. I work with a Carolina fan and a Clemson fan. This will be useful to me in my ongoing efforts to pit them against one another!! LOL

USBB on October 21, 2008 at 12:35 PM

That was on purpose!

davidk on October 21, 2008 at 12:35 PM

you clowns.

Dave Rywall on October 21, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Pot … kettle.

davidk on October 21, 2008 at 12:36 PM

I heard Cowherd on ESPN talking about it this morning.

His take is that the ref, an ex-athlete, forgot what he was doing and who he was (a ref not a player).

I think it’s fairly obvious he hit the QB on purpose, but I don’t think it means the ref had bet money on the game.

The play was way too obvious to be an attempt to ‘throw’ the game.

It was just a stupid thing. The ref should be suspended and busted down to Division III for a while.

Religious_Zealot on October 21, 2008 at 12:37 PM

This was a Bud Light commercial, you clowns.

Dave Rywall on October 21, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Real American Hero’s Presents: The Betting Ref….

Yes YOU the Betting Ref, whom bets on all the game you Ref.
And then Slam the Quarterback down just so you can make sure you get that bounty of 10, 20 even 50 dollars.

Sings: “You got Sacked oh YEAY!”

And if it wasn’t for you, Oh Betting Taker Downer, we wouldn’t have these YouTube moments.

Sings: “I got SACKED by the Ref!”

So here’s to you Oh Put Down of the College Game, Keep tagging them players and maybe you might get thrown our yourself.

Brought in to you in part by HA and a moment of weakness.

upinak on October 21, 2008 at 12:39 PM

I liked it a lot. Anything giving Spurrier some gastric reflux makes my world sweeter.

a capella on October 21, 2008 at 12:40 PM

I saw this on ESPN, he DEFINITELY stands his ground, and puts his forearm into the player. He should have gotten out of the way.

Oh and here’s ESPN’s aftergame report on this awesome commerical. They do that all the time. Clowns.

AubieJon on October 21, 2008 at 12:42 PM

The Ref is clearly an Obama supporter and took, “Get all up in their face” to heart.

Dave Rywall on October 21, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Once again I sense projection from the left on this.

Rywall knows Obama will lose in two weeks and he and his lefty toadies are beginning to come to the realization they’re clowns for being duped by Obama and the complicit MSM because they actually bought into all the BS tripe from Obama, his campaign, and the MSM, like how Obama is ahead by 11 points! It hurts when you realize you’ve been played for a sucka, huh Rywall!

Again, lefty projection as they (Rywall et al) are already feeling like clowns and come Nov 5th they will be ass-clowns!

Liberty or Death on October 21, 2008 at 1:01 PM

Very strange.

He gave him the forearm shiver and put the shoulder into it – no doubt about it. Nice to have a twelfth man.

The SEC doesn’t play by Canadian rules. And dont’t you have a dental appointment you’ve been waiting 7 months for?

I just sprayed my pumpkin spice latte all over the room. :)

whitetop on October 21, 2008 at 1:21 PM

This gives a new meaning to “perfectly innocent.” Ref should get canned. I bet he won’t be calling any more SC games.

Hammerhead on October 21, 2008 at 1:21 PM

Prior to that hit the same ref sets a screen on the LSU linebacker and allows for the receiver to have a huge gain and get them in position to score. I think he was just evening it out, y’know trying to be fair and spread the wealth around.

This video is overrated, he clearly anticipated the QB’s next move incorrectly and then braced himself for a hit.

Keep politics out of it guys. Besides I doubt Barack knows a field goal from a blitz. He don’t strike me as a football guy and we know he ain’t a bowler.
The only thing this video clip really proves is how overhyped SEC teams are.
Go “Ramblin Wreck!!!

Just A Grunt on October 21, 2008 at 1:30 PM

Kind of like when two people try and get out of each other’s way but wind up running into each other.

Except this was done at a sprint, so it’s no big surprise that they collided.

P.P.S.

Thanks for clearing that up, MirCat.

jackmac on October 21, 2008 at 1:26 PM

For clear clarity the Commercial had a white ref doing it. The hit was by a black ref. I say this to show that someone took the indecent and cut it to the commercial.

I haven’t found the real commercial yet.

MirCat on October 21, 2008 at 1:31 PM

He musta had a biiiiiig bet on this game, and SC was beatin’ the spread!

ROSE!

Kinda like the media shillin’ for O!, only more nuanced

Ciannaky on October 21, 2008 at 1:34 PM

As a die-hard LSU fan, hence my nickname here, TheHat, which refers to LSU head coach Les Miles’ nickname, I watch every LSU on TV.

And for the life of me, I donot recall this play in the LSU v SC game.

I cannot see the video as of right now, but I do not recall this play at all.

There were 2 other plays where the same ref got in the way, 1 was when a SC receiver ran a crossing route about 5 yards up field and the LSU defender got picked by the ref and the SC receiver got a huge gain on the play. The other one I seem to recall basically the same thing.

I will have to wait till I get home to see this video, b/c I dont recall any ref getting in the way of the QB downfield.

I got a feeling this is a hoax.

Dave Rywall on October 21, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Hahah, unlike a sports-hating mangina like yourself I was actually watching the game when this happened. I bet you were always picked last during P.E assuming your generation doesn’t feel it is too “agressive”.

So try to wake up from your YouTube/Internet infested world for once and realize you don’t know what the f*ck you are talking about…again.

ClassicCon on October 21, 2008 at 1:40 PM

http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/8700852/Not-the-highlight-Garcia-had-in-mind

apollyonbob on October 21, 2008 at 1:40 PM

That was obviously intentional.

He needs to be fired immediately.

WisCon on October 21, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Hahah…Dave doesn’t even know the difference between fake NFL teams and real NCAA teams. Christ I would be too embarrassed to show up here any more. And libs make fun of those that get all their information from “faux news”.

ClassicCon on October 21, 2008 at 1:47 PM

Def looks intentional. The ref could have stepped to the left anytime instead squares up & throws the forearm shimmy.

The flip side however is that QB looks about as tough as BO.

VikingGoneWild on October 21, 2008 at 1:49 PM

He must have had money on the game.

Dave Rywall on October 21, 2008 at 12:30 PM

A classic example of a comment being posted without bothering to investigate the source and assuming you know the real truth about things, and everyone else are idiots. Kind of like people who take all those attacks on Sarah Palin as gospel without bothering to investigate and treat them as the truth, because they know what they believe is always true.

However, for the near future, every time “Bud Light Dave” posts some new unsubstantiated attack on other Hot Air threads, there will be this post available for referencing his fact-checking abilities. Congrats, fella, and pop yourself open a Bud Light, or even a Mich Ultra, to celebrate your devastating and cutting put-down of the rest of the posters on the site. Then go out and blindside a referee.

jon1979 on October 21, 2008 at 2:01 PM

Just watched it at ESPN. Yep, that was the other play I remember. In real time on Saturday night, it didnt look like anything there.

Now that you look for it, yeah, he gave him a classic forearm shiver, after squaring up on him.

I guess flashbacks work on athletes too. He just thought he was at Kentucky again!

TheHat on October 21, 2008 at 2:01 PM

I got a feeling this is a hoax.

No, that’s Garcia.

Smelley (yes, that’s his real name) was the USC QB for a couple of games and some other guy that they’ve since shelved who only started the first game and then got pulled, but Garcia was out there for the Gamecocks on Saturday night.

NoDonkey on October 21, 2008 at 2:02 PM

How about:

“I was cleaning my shoulder and it went off!!”

…but there is still that deliberate step into the contact which needs to be explained…

SC’s opponents should have been flagged and penalized for “too many players on the field“!!!

landlines on October 21, 2008 at 2:04 PM

I guess Dave’s so embarrassed he’s not coming back.

hawkdriver on October 21, 2008 at 2:08 PM

Ref is part of the field. It looks pretty innocent to me. At this level of football a player should understand that if a ref gets in the way he gets run down.

Mormon Doc on October 21, 2008 at 2:08 PM

Come on guys, Dave was just watching a video edited by CNN or Michael Moore. When the ref goes from black to white by the time he goes to the sidelines!!! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Got to love them liberals, don’t know sports from their butt.

This Ref was the first black man to captain an SEC team, he was a linebacker at Kentucky in the 70’s.

As a former lineman, the instincts kick in sometimes, you can ask anyone who plays flag football with me.

Dave Rywall on October 21, 2008 at 2:37 PM

As much as I loathe you politically, I have to give you props for coming back.

Concerning the vid, as bizarre as it is I really don’t think it is too sinister. My opinion is that some old school athelte was having a football version of a “nam flashback”. Still crazy.

ClassicCon on October 21, 2008 at 4:04 PM

I have to side with the flashback theory… he couldn’t actually think he could help his team or that it would go unnoticed… that’s just how connected to the game he is, although it very well may indicate how his emotions are working during games which he is sympathetic to a certain team, he was definitely of the mind set to stop the ball for a few moments.

Kaptain Amerika on October 21, 2008 at 7:58 PM

The ref was going to pass to the runner’s left, but the runner saw an incoming tackle and changed direction right into the ref. Ref puts his forearm up to protect his face from the helmet. Player goes down. End of story.

That’s one solid ref.

Gaunilon on October 21, 2008 at 11:18 PM

*correction: to the runner’s RIGHT.
