Video: Pawlenty asks why we should tempt our enemies

Joe Biden handed the Republicans a gift yesterday, and they’re taking advantage of it quickly. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty appeared on Fox this morning to expand on Biden’s assertion yesterday that electing Barack Obama would provoke enemies abroad to “test” the inexperienced President. Pawlenty argued that was as good a reason as any to vote for the more experienced candidate:

FOX News’ Gretchen Carlson: So let’s take a look at what Joe Biden said over the weekend when he was out in Seattle. He basically said that if Obama is elected within six months there will be some sort of an international incident because international leaders, I guess, will see it fit to do something against the U.S. How did you take these comments?

Gov. Pawlenty: Well, it’s not the first time that people like Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton or many others have suggested that Barack Obama isn’t ready to be president, doesn’t have the requisite experience to be president and the last thing the country needs is a president who the world might be tempted to test. We need a candidate who is going to have passed the test. John McCain is respected around the world because of his national security, military, and foreign affairs experience. The country is struggling economically and in many other ways and we don’t need the added pressure of some sort of invitation or temptation by others to see that kind of weakness. This is not coming from me or from somebody on our side, this is coming from his own vice presidential candidate, Joe Biden, who repeatedly has suggested Barack Obama’s not ready.

Carlson: Well he did at least when he was one of his competitors and they were debating against one another. So, do you think it’s still in his mindset that he would say something like this?

Gov. Pawlenty: Well, I think Senator Biden is sometimes, you know, makes a lot of interesting comments but you see the situation, for example, in Georgia or Ukraine. There could be temptations by other countries to say look maybe this is a time where we test this potential new president. That kind of temptation wouldn’t be as high in my opinion if you had a seasoned experienced known commodity steady hand on the throttle like John McCain.

For an example of Biden’s earlier discomfort with Obama as commander-in-chief, we can hearken back to a McCain commercial from the summer — one that may get more play now:

I suspect a fresh ad, with the latest quote, is already in the works.

The question will be whether this is another Joe the Plumber moment, only on foreign affairs. The Colin Powell endorsement was intended to remove these kinds of worries from the minds of undecided voters. Biden has negated the Powell effect and perhaps put them in a worse position than before it. After all, if the running mate thinks his ticket will put America in more danger, that’s a pretty powerful reason to avoid it.

Oh I didn’t even have to read this entry! Doesn’t Tim Pawlenty KNOW that when Obama is President, we aren’t going to have any enemies?! Someone should clue him in.

When Biden made this statement, he reminded me of a buffoonish oaf who likes to put a chip on his shoulder and then dares you to knock it off. So when you do, he stands there with a dumbfounded look on his face, like he doesn’t know what he should do next.

This is pretty much a general summation of what could happen in the not too distant future if some wacko group like Al Qaida or someone else decides to do something creative like set off a dirty bomb in the middle of crowded Manhattan during a typical crowded midday, or perhaps send a munitions loaded jet airliner crashing into the Sears Tower in Chicago, and the reaction by our elected officials is pretty much general confoundedness and confusion.

Now tell me what good “Hope and Change” are going to do at that point.

Joe W. and Joe Biden = the Doublemint Twins.

Chris Dodd (new NYT whipping boy) and Barney Frank (sure, higher taxes) = second set of Doublemint Twins.

McCain and Palin need to get out the big guns and begin firing at will.

JOE BIDEN – THE OCTOBER SURPRISE!

AubieJon on October 21, 2008 at 10:11 AM

When you really think about what Biden said,, he said a major international crisis WILL HAPPEN. He said Obama’s response will be unpopular! So,, does that mean an Obama presidency means catastrophe for America,, thousands may die,, martial law will be declared??? What’s he saying?? Words do have meaning! Will governments fall?? Will war be threatened on the US or one of our allies?? This is a serious thing. I think we have a right to know what Biden has been told and what does he know??!!

The tagline:

You, sir, are clearly a raaaaaacist. This is an obvious anagram of: Teeming Negro Elephant Letdowns.

I can’t believe you would refer to Colin Powell as a “Negro Elephant”. I’m telling Senator Government on you.

Drudge reporting that D’Oprah Winfrey will be producing Obama’s tv spectacular.

Oprah Winfrey is offering to “produce” the half-hour Barack Obama advertisement set to air on Oct. 29, a top source tells the DRUDGE REPORT. The Daytime TV dynamo has even offered up her studio space in Chicago.

“She’s been begging Obama to let her help,” a source explaines.

Ever fight a bully? They smell weakness and prey on it, but very rarely do they have the chops to back it up. Unfortunately, the dangerous bullies of the world have armies ready to pick a fight. The only way to beat men like that is to project legitimate strength, and bloody their nose at every rational opportunity. They smell weakness on us, since we’re so bound and determined as a nation to elect a spineless, terror-appeasing first-term senator, and his gaffe-machine running mate.

Flyover Country on October 21, 2008 at 10:26 AM

I still think the most important line of Biden’s stream-of-consciousness was his preparing the media for the situation where President Obama is going to do some stuff that’s gonna shock us and make us regret putting him in office.

What in the hell is Biden talking about?

Listening to Dennis Miller just now.

Mike Allen from The Politico was on and Miller asked him about what the Democrats were going to do and Miller said “well what we’re going to do” and Miller interupted him and tried to correct him and said, “You’re not a Democrat are you because you just said ‘We’re.’” And Allen ended the interview. LOL

The problem is that in a Hollywood or America myth, the bully gets what is coming to him/her. In today’s world, the Teacher (UN) would step in just after the bully socked you, but just before you get to deliver the responding punch to the bully’s glass jaw. He/she lives to bully again and again, while you attend anger management class for “responding aggressively” to aggression.

Just look at the response to Russia? What has happened to them after they bullied and “socked” Georgia? I mean in rreal concrete terms? Nothing.

Has it occurred to anyone else that the dems may not want Obama to win?

Vashta.Nerada on October 21, 2008 at 10:31 AM

{rant} You need oxygen, ignition and fuel to keep a fire going. Conservative radio will provide the ignition and the blogs will give us the fuel but without the oxygen of the press I fear that another potentially damaging gaffe will sputter out.

We can’t compete with the media and the alternative media is not strong enough, yet, to prove an effective foil.

We can’t compete in this election since the press has totally abrogated their role as a impartial observer. This is a historic event and the Conservative movement must seize the opportunity to destroy the already weakened print media and force the debate finally to a level playing field.

Yes, this election is critical but far more critical is an opportunity to get a foot in the door of the print media in time for the next election. If we lose this chance to get a competing voice, we might not get another chance in out lifetime.{/rant}

All presidents are tested early will be the response

tomas on October 21, 2008 at 10:35 AM

I have a much different take on Biden’s remarks. I smell a rat. Consider this, if you are newly elected Marxist president of the US (let’s not kid ourselves Obama’s a Marxist) and our historic enemies are Marxist and who would be most inclined to make trouble for the US in any other time, why would they want to harm a fellow comrade? They wouldn’t and that’s the point. They would find it most useful to help him in anyway possibly. But they couldn’t do it openly as America is a center-right country (for now).

So what to do? Why manufacture a ‘crisis’ that Obama could ’solve’ and show his toughness and brilliant judgment. And then he can go and say, “See, I told you I was ready and have the better ideas and judgment”. And then the real Obama policies can be made easier for the American public to swallow.

All presidents are tested early will be the response

tomas on October 21, 2008 at 10:35 AM

That’s already out there, Colmes said it last night.

Let’s slap ourselves back to reality.

The 9-11 plot was in its final planning stage prior to the election of 2000.

Ironic side-note, Algor’s pathetic prolonging of the vote count meant the Bush transition team was kept out of national security briefings at the very moment when Al Qaeda was doing its dry runs. God knows Clinton was too pre-occupied to give a crap, so basically Al Qaeda had a free pass thanks to Clinon(D) and Gore(D).

Anyway, GW Bush was not personally “tested” by Al Qaeda.

America was tested. GW Bush responded the right way. Obama will cost more lives than 9-11. Deep down, even hard core leftists know it.

VP #1: “My president will get you all killed”
VP #2: “My president will keep you safe”

Talk about a no brainer when you walk into the voting booth. Makes you wonder about the sequence of events leading up to selecting Joe as his running mate.

Did someone suggest, “Hey, if you’re going to pick Biden we’ll have to fire-up ACORN way ahead of schedule and get a boatload of votes locked up before Joe opens his mouth.”

fogw on October 21, 2008 at 10:43 AM

Let’s not get worked up over Pawlenty’s interview on Fox. He is singing to the choir. Biden’s admission will only have an effect if goes onto CBS, NBC, ABC, etc. If it’s not reported their it didn’t happen.

Should Obama rethink JFK-Khrushchev?

http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/05/obama_should_rethink_jfkkrusch.html

“Khrushchev’s aide, after the first day, said the American president seemed “very inexperienced, even immature.” Khrushchev agreed, noting that the youthful Kennedy was “too intelligent and too weak.” The Soviet leader left Vienna elated — and with a very low opinion of the leader of the free world.”

I think the point here is not that US Presidents should care about enemy leaders think of them, but rather that these leaders have nothing else by which to judge a new, young US President with no record.

The enemies of the US know John McCain and how he would likely react precisely because of his long record of public service. This is a good thing and the McCain camp should hammer this point.

Waterboy on October 21, 2008 at 10:51 AM

I hope this isn’t over and I suspect its not. But If we should lose, we may just have to accept that America, at least the majority of our citizens, have forgotten too much. We have had almost non stop growth since the 80’s. When people talk of the poor in America today they are mostly talking about people who have multiple dvd players, are overweight, and at least one video game system.

People my age (under thirty five and I will be there in the next few months) and younger just have no concept of what scary is. Most don’t remember the cold war when it was a WAR. Obama may be that reminder, just like Carter was,to educate them.

Maybe an international crisis early in his Presidency will wake people up from their hope and change chanting before he can enact his socialist agenda. Its a long, long shot I know. I am not one of those saying an Obama win is good for the party in the long run. But if he wins, it tells us how much we have forgotten.

I would prefer Chavez pulling something stupid to Iran, but maybe thats not possible. But 9/11 did completely shatter terrorism as a police matter for a time. I can’t believe it wasn’t enough, but maybe we need more. But I do believe there still is a line that we wont cross as a nation.

Our problem as a nation is our short term memory. An Obama win, as even Biden says, could change that real, real quick.

Drive-By Media. If they were doing their jobs, Obama wouldn’t even be running for president now but likely would be under indictment. It is what it is and there is no point moping over it.

Instead, look at it from another perspective: Obama has been campaigning for this office for over a year. He has a well-oiled campaign machine that has spent nearly half a billion dollars on rallies, GOTV efforts, television, radio and print ads. The Drive-By media is completely in the tank for him as is all of Hollywood.

And yet – just two weeks away from election day – his poll numbers are either steady or dropping from the five point lead he has over McCain. And THAT is based on an oversampling of Democrat voters.

The current Battleground Poll has Obama at 48% and McCain at 47% – and this does not factor in the Bradley Effect, which automatically reduces his percentage between 3% and 5% at a minimum.

He is sinking and he knows it. He will grow desperate in the next two weeks and will do anything to recover lost ground. Unfortunately, the harder he attacks, the deeper he will sink. His network infomercial nine days from now will backfire. Joe the Plumber exposed Obama for he socialist fraud he is and that message is beginning to resonate throught middle America.

Throughout all of this the Drive-Bys will pedal their Obama Bikes furiously on his behalf, with glowing coverage and ridiculously lop-sided polls, but the harder they pedal, the slower his campaign will go.

On November 4 John McCain will win handily.

Unfortunately, you’re right. I probably should have taken my logic one step further, vis-a-vis the UN. This whole thing reminds me of the last episode of South Park, where Wendy threatens to beat Cartman’s @$$ over his idiot behavior regarding breast cancer. Cartman goes crying to Wendy’s parents, who forbid her to fight. Principal Victoria finds out about the situation, and encourages Wendy to beat the hell out of Cartman anyway. No such voice of reason exists on the world stage.
