Quote of the day

posted at 10:20 pm on October 21, 2008 by Allahpundit

“If it wasn’t for Sarah Palin, I’d move to f***in’ Sweden…

John McCain, God bless you for discovering a Republican with massive amounts of balls. The good governor, Sarah Palin, is the bureaucrat-crushing, status quo-punching conservative that I’ve been looking for. I knew of her before John did, I had worked with Gov. Palin on numerous issues up in Alaska, where she proved she was a ‘we the people’ person and not a bureaucrat monger. We are voting Republican this year, not because of John McCain as much as for Sarah Palin.”

Sport, let me warn you: if you get Manly banned, you’d better be ready to put on his cheerleader skirt and pom-poms. He keeps a whole lot of Republicans from jumping off of a cliff en mass. Unless you can work that outfit, leave MR alone!

We are voting Republican this year, not because of John McCain as much as for Sarah Palin.

If McCain loses, this is going to be the reasoning that caused it.

JetBoy on October 21, 2008 at 10:22 PM

How do you figure?

misterpeasea on October 21, 2008 at 11:39 PM

I assume it’s because as much as people loved Sarah, it wasn’t enough to overcome their distaste of McCain. Ergo, it’s her fault; not McCain’s.

Am I right, Jetboy?

I’ll be the first on the posse after Fonda and Ayers but you won’t find me going after some fella who decided to stay home. I got on with my life, and they theirs. We all live with our choices and that’s good enough for me.

And to rub salt on Manly’s rash….sorry friend. There were many great ships and many great sailors. You left out ‘Miss E’ (now you know why I call Miss E that). It was a different time. I just get confused about who was and wasn’t a good American back then.

Dan Quayle wasn’t a good American because he was only in the Guard. George Bush wasn’t a good American because he was only in the Texas Air Guard. George Bush Senior wasn’t a good pilot because he got shot down, even though he was at the time the youngest Navy fighter pilot in WWII. Biden never served and was never asked once about it. Kerry’s record could be admirable but he was almost an anarchist in his rhetoric and associations after the war. Said he threw his medals away but still has them? What entertainers did serve. What athletes besides Staubauch and Bliers? I don’t know why any of it matters now. Just that too many people did serve who get no gratitude and that’s the real point.

BTW, “butter-fried egg”? Is that what it sounds like? Forgive me, my man does the cookin’.

artlover on October 22, 2008 at 12:08 AM

Egg in a window is a simple but delicious recipe. Cut a large circle in the middle of a bread slice. Saute the bread with the circle filled on both sides — preferably in butter — until golden brown. Remove the bread circle and crack an egg into the hole. Saute on both sides until the white of the egg is just cooked through, leaving the yolk runny enough for bread dipping.

I’m one of them live-to-eaters and food is a consuming hobby for me, pun intended. My DH started cooking less than two years ago, but he is a natural.

Using a wineglass, cut out a hole in the center of a thick slice of bread (at least 1/2″) and put aside the cut-out piece. Butter each side of the piece of bread. Heat a skillet. When hot enough, drop the bread in the center of the skillet and then drop a pat of butter in the hole. Then crack an egg and drop it in the hole. After 2 minutes, carefully flip the assembly over and cook for two more minutes. Transfer to a plate and enjoy. Iggi in a basket.

hawkdriver on October 22, 2008 at 12:12 AM

That is very true. I’m not making sweeping judgments on whether someone was a “good American”. My focus is pretty narrow; draft dodgers, runaways to Candada & Fonda. When it counted they were cowards and fell short. I’m not on a crusade about it but do feel strongly.

We had a neighbor two doors down – she married an Army guy before he shipped out as a helo pilot. Less than six months later he was dead. My Mom volunteered at a church thrift shop. Clothes were donated regularly – sometimes army uniforms. She came home one day with a handful of purple hearts that had been discarded hoping she could match them back up with the owners. She was very upset that the vets would toss them like that.

ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 12:27 AM

Mr. Rash, did you notice that we both just offered the same basic recipe but with different names?

I know we aren’t here to discuss ships but….

My late dad was on the Might Mo when she was recommissioned and met Reagan. It was, I think, his proudest moment in life. Dad had been part of the reconstruction team and thought more of Mo and her accomplishments than he did of ours, his kids. It was an honor to have been so close to such a great symbol of liberty.

Yup. Either it means we need to hook up and have hot, monkey sex OR a well known recipe has made its way into many cultures around the world.

I’ll spare you the gagging…it’s the latter.

ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 12:35 AM

Great site you have there too Kama’aina.

Mahalo Nui Loa!

When and how long was your tour at Barbers Point Naval Air Station?

Kini on October 22, 2008 at 12:36 AM

I like the idea of the hook up. Maybe I’ll wake my husband up and sneak off to bed.

Night – Thanks Manly Rash (or is it Sir Rash the all Wise One?) we need more of your outlook these days.

USS Lexington, USS YOrk, USS Yorktown….it goes on…and on…perhaps I should have stopped with USS Constitution.

Old Ironsides..no one can dispute HER legacy.

OMG. Father Martin. Back in the 80′s I knew a priest…Fr. Martin. He was on the Indy. He survived, and attributed his survival to God and became a priest afterward. He told me the story. I nearly shit myself.

Good night everyone, I am going to be so mad to me at 5:15 a.m.

Cindy Munford on October 22, 2008 at 12:38 AM

Last word for me for tonight….for you Navy buffs. The battlewagons and fleet carriers get all the press. For a treat go find the story of a Pig Boat, the S-44. The navy didn’t give her a name but that didn’t stop her from getting a reputation.

From 1977 until 1981 and then I went to Bragg. At teh time I was a CH47 Crew Chief and they didn’t have room for them at Wheeler. Great duty.

Out motto was, Lele Makou No Na Puali, or We Fly for the Troops.

Been a pissy night night for me. Thanks for tolerating my assholery. She’s a fine vessel. God, I love frigates. Ever seen Master and Commander?

ManlyRash on October 22, 2008 at 12:40 AM

Long time ago when I was very young a friend had a tee shirt with the real f bomb in a psychedelic print. His mom figured out what is said and was yelling at him. When I asked what she was so mad about that’s how he told what his shirt said. Sorry long boring story but feel free to use it.

Cindy Munford on October 22, 2008 at 12:30 AM

My first recollection of the F word was as a 6-year-old. Egged on by my friends, I wrote it in chalk on a neighbor’s fence, but I had no concept what it meant. I must have been learning about the words talk and walk at the time because I spelled it with an “l” instead of a “c” — and got in big trouble with my parents.

I’m not a big fan of pretty much any aspect of Nuget’s career, but that headline and the picture below it made me laugh out loud. Good for you, Ted.

I knew a seaman from the Indy about a mile from my home who died about three years ago now. Sad story. Even the story of the Captain.
