They’re all dire, but number five’s a doozy. Sterling stuff from the ‘Cuda, who’s orders of magnitude better on the stump than McCain will ever be. But, er, since when is crossing the border into Pakistan to hit AQ a bad idea? Note to S.P.: You had it right the first time.

hawkdriver,

On the origin of the moniker Manly Rash (from the soon to published Wit and Wisdom of Manly Rash or, An Excursion into Sanity):
When I was in high school the quasi-educator homunculi who populated the school board were of the opinion that the taxpayers’ jack might be better spend on more intellectually unplifting accoutrements such as football jerseys and basketball uniforms as opposed, say, to purchasing the performance rights to a broadway production staged sometime after the Hoover administration. The theatre teacher was obliged to dumpster dive into the trove of stinkers, clinkers and bombs that had long since tumbled into the remainder bin and he eventually emerged with plays that made Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom look the Ziegfield Brothers.
The play I happened to see was titled “Egad, What a Cad or, Virtue Triumphs Over Villainy.” It was standard early 20th century Broadway comedy farce – played strictly for laughs and laughs are what it got when it premiered at my high school. Teenagers, after all, are idiots who will laugh at anything. Hence the enormous popularity of Monty Python. (Plot spoiler: Villian schemes to steal the family fotune and the girl. Hero defeats the schemes of the villain and wins the heart of the girl. Laughter ensues and the audience applauds when the curtain comes down).
Including intermission, it was an hour and fifteen minutes of my life I will never get back. I can remember absolutely nothing about the play except for three of the characters.
The villian in the piece – appropriately named Bertram Oleander – was portrayed by a chunky, zit-faced sophomore whose dark hair – conveniently enough for the benefit of the production – was already greasy. Bertram Oleander was a delightfully unctuous moniker, a perfect nom de voyage de terre for every lecherous, scheming, moustache twirling, douchebag who ever prowled the earth since Cain clobbered his younger brother with a big stick.
The objects of his avarice and lust were the Greystone family fortune and Constant Hope, the distressed damsel in this two-act disaster.
The hero – played by a tall, disturbingly handsome, Aryan-looking senior – was named Manly Rash.
“MANLY RASH?!” I said out loud when I gazed at the playbill. “What the fuck kind of name is Manly Rash? Sounds like jock itch.”
The chorus of Beavis and Butthead chortling in nearby seats gave ample warrant that I was not the only one in the crowd who could appreciate an awful double-entendre. It was the most stupid, asinine name I ever heard – dumber, even, than Orville Reddenbacher or Englebert Humperdinck – and I never forgot it.
Naturally, much later in my life, when the time came to go forth and lead the civilized world back to a course of sanity and properly cooked food, it was the first nom de plume that popped into my head – as it easily beats out the stupid, asinine name I was given at birth.
You may henceforth call me Manly or Mr. Rash. Or Manly Rash. Or M.R.
But not jock itch.

I have a dream. In the years 2008-2020, The conservatives formerly known as “on our side”, viz: Noonan, Buckley, Powell, Coupla-others, will be required to act as personal servants, maids and caddyshacks to our insanely popular President Palin. Mellifluous wormtongues like Hitchens will be required to lick said President’s arse. Although, being a Brit and therefore probably a pervert, he’d like that.
Fortunata on October 21, 2008 at 3:54 PM
As far as leftists go, I must be Bertram Oleander.

As far as the moonbats are concerned, we are ALL Bertram Oleander.
However, there is only one Manly Rash. And I am he.

I profusely apologize to all those traumatized by the revelation of my age…
I’m pretty much the textbook definition of geek. I was more likely to have my head buried in a sci-fi or fantasy book, SNES/PlayStation/GameBoy, my laptop, or one of my sketchbooks or notepads filled with stories of my own devising to bother much with TV. I still don’t watch all that much of it.
They’re bitter, stringy, and lacking any substantial nutritional value. I do not recommend. Rating: .0025/5

In all seriousness…it could be a bestseller – especially if it hits the market at the right time. This is no time to go wobbly.
ManlyRash on October 21, 2008 at 4:10 PM
Indeed, Manly. I prefer this address. Please let us know when the book gets released, and I/we’ll help you sell it.
Reading about the origins of your nom de plume was the most fun of the day. Seeing this “nom de voyage de terre” was a delight.

Whether we win or lose – and right now I’m thinking it’s a coin toss – these last couple weeks will be a blast, watching Sarahcuda ripping them a new one.
Michael Reagan is right: this is his dad reincarnate. This is Lady Thatcher taking it to the freaking Reds. I’m old enough to remember, and you can take it from this crusty old Republican.

Given four years to cocoon as VP the metamorphosis will be a sight to behold. Then her base will be the world….
They won’t be ready for her. Can you imagine her giving a speech at the UN as she bitch slaps all the perps who pretend to have humanity in their best interests. I think a lot of people would be afraid to show up. These cretins will finally be mocked in the public square.

I got there at 6:30 AM – second time to see Gov. Palin – I was also in Carson City at her first solo appearance in the lower 48.
Rep. Dean Heller (who voted against the bail-a-palooza TWICE) set the mood for Gov. Palin by asking the audience for their opinion on the bailout.
She stayed after for a good half hour to sign autographs.
Best part was recognizing local versions of JTP, such as “Dave the Cop”, in the audience.
Second best – “God Bless the USA”, sung by Lee Greenwood, and also very loudly by all in the audience.
And more than a few tears in the audience at this line: “And I won’t forget the men who died who gave that right to me.”
A great morning in America.
fred5678 on October 21, 2008 at 4:53 PM
In case you didn’t make it to the rally in Reno – you missed hearing this in person, and the opportunity to sing along.
Have at it.

fred5678 on October 21, 2008 at 4:56 PM
You had it right the first time.
No she didn’t. Due to the topography we can’t effectively go after bin Laden without the cooperation of Pakistani tribesmen and we shouldn’t risk turning a nation of 140 million Muslims from an ally into an enemy.
And anyone, including Colin Powell, who thinks it wouldn’t have been an absolute disaster to concede oil-rich Iraq to Al Qaeda and Iran is nuts.

She is terrific. Is there a better campaigner in the GOP today?

james23 on October 21, 2008 at 5:32 PM
What makes this whole line of attack lame is the implication that McCain won’t be tested if he’s elected because he’s a really, really tough guy who no one would dare mess with.
Horses*&t. Every new president since the U.S. became a superpower has been “tested” by allies and enemies alike, in ways that likely never made it into the news cycle.
The Dems could essily counter with “Whose temperment do you want on the other end of that suitcase with the launch codes?”.
But they won’t bother at this point, because the clock’s running down and Ayres was McCain’s last time out.
Game over.
sanguine4 on October 21, 2008 at 5:41 PM
Leaders around the world see every president as soft, untested, and weak. Nothing new here at all. GWB is hard in the center of two wars, not backing down an iota, yet Putin comes along and puts the US to the test by invading Georgia.
AQ tested the GWB and the Billy C administrations. The original Hussein tested GHWB. The Soviets constantly tested Reagan, Uncle Ho tested Nixon, Kruschev tested Kennedy, Hitler and Tojo tested FDR.
This is historical precedent and expectation, and I have no doubt that McCain would be tested as well.
Biden didn’t do Oy any favors, but he knows what happens to every POTUS. We should always be prepared to be tested. It’s called LEADERSHIP.
trailboss on October 21, 2008 at 5:52 PM

Thanks seven of many.
I need to wipe a tear from my eye.
“We few…we happy few”.
Never surrender…never blink…stand close to one another…
Remember to keep your hands out of your pockets and loosely at your sides.
It’s not over until M. Obama sings.
This IS the fight for our very existance as a united nation.
The most important in ALL the battles I’ve been in.
Over.
1GooDDaDDy on October 21, 2008 at 5:54 PM
Yes, all presidents get tested, but the ones perceived to be weak are tested much more quickly and dramatically. Examples: GWB, Carter, and JFK. Those who prove through their reactions that they are in fact weak get tested continually throughout their administrations by emboldened enemies. I guarantee you that if GWB had reacted with “diplomacy” after 9/11 or had run away from Iraq, AQ would have kept hitting us over and over and over again for the duration of his administration, which would not have been renewed in 2004.
aero on October 21, 2008 at 6:02 PM
Absolutely agreed. However, whether McCain or Oy would stand strong depends on both the test and the mettle of the ‘testee’ in those particular circumstances.
trailboss on October 21, 2008 at 6:10 PM
Seems like the media continues to vet Palin for the democrats. Still turning a blind eye to Nancy Pelosi when she does the same.

Was this exercise in obtusivity done on purpose or do you REALLY believe that going after Osama in Pakistan was the issue? The issue was threatening such action publicly and thereby putting your ally in the position to have to publicly denounce such an incursion and thereby showing strained relations with your greatest ally to the entire world.
