McCain going for broke in Pennsylvania?

posted at 1:18 pm on October 21, 2008 by Allahpundit

So says the Washington Times.

“He’s 13 points behind in the state polls, Obama’s outspending him 4-to-1, Obama has a huge field organization that he can’t begin to touch, and the race hasn’t tightened in a week. Did I miss anything?” said Terry Madonna, director of Pennsylvania’s Franklin & Marshall College Poll…

One of [McCain's] senior advisers said recently that not all is lost in Pennsylvania.

“We’re seeing very different poll numbers,” the adviser said. “We’re not seeing double digits; we think it’s much closer.”

An aide on the ground in the state, meanwhile, said internal polls show Mr. Obama’s lead in the “mid- to low single digits.”…

But Mr. Madonna said time is running out for the Republican. “I thought all along that if he could get it into single digits this week, he had a chance. He hasn’t. They say his internal polls show him better than our state polls, but wait a minute. What that means is that every single poll – every single poll – done in the last couple weeks is wrong. That can’t be,” he said with a laugh.

Yeah, every poll this month except one has Obama by double digits, and the one outlier has him by eight. Here’s the RCP map. If you give Maverick every last toss-up state (in gray), he’s still behind 286-252. Your task: Flip 18 EVs from blue to red, then scroll down for my take.

He could do it by taking Virginia and Colorado, but (a) Colorado may or may not be a lost cause, and (b) I think TNR’s right that with so many toss-ups to defend and the Democrats with an almost $40 million cash advantage (and growing), he’s probably better off concentrating on one state that can get him those extra 18 EVs rather than spreading out across the country and dividing resources among several. If he wins Pennsylvania, he can lose both states I mentioned and still win the election. As the Times notes, late deciders and rural white voters broke hard for Hillary there so a full push into the state is bound to do some good. But if that’s the strategy, what’s Palin doing out in Colorado Springs? She should be touring the toss-ups to try to keep them red while McCain sets up shop in Murtha country for the next two weeks. The one strategy that doesn’t make sense to me is to divide time between Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Colorado. It hedges your bets, but those bets are necessarily smaller in each case when you really need to be betting big now.

FYI, the last time Maverick led in any poll in Pennsylvania was late April. Exit quotation: “I get the appeal of trying to win one state (Pa.) rather than having to run the table on a lot of little ones (Nevada, Colorado, Iowa …), but this is the equivalent of Kerry deciding it would be easier to just stage a comeback in Texas.”

Update: If you’re looking for national polls, take your pick: GWU says Obama by one, Zogby says Obama by eight.

I have said it over and over and over again. PA is in play. There are significant reasons Obama lost to Clinton by 17 points and not all of them are related to people loving Clinton. The blacks in the cities are voting Obama and the whites in the Republican-T are voting McCain (read: Palin). Turnout will be key but PA is definitely in play and if PA goes McCain so does, OH, IN, MO and VA.

Keep a very close eye on Obama’s post Hawaii schedule

AP : Great pessimistic/discouraging post. Glad to see all is well with the world.

Is Lynn Swann out there stumping for McCain, by the way?

reaganaut on October 21, 2008 at 2:06 PM

Get Jerome Bettis on the stump for McCain and he’ll carry every district in PA. =P

I suppose this is supposed to be ‘realism’ rather than pessimism, but it’s really just another bullsh+t thread by a Chronic Depressed Pathologically-Defeatist Pain-in-the-Ass

What are we supposed to do this this selective information? What purpose does it serve–other than lowering Republican voting by causing Repubs so just give up?

If you’re not part of the solution, AllahPagan………..

you ARE part of the problem

I have had to do a fair amount of driving on back roads in Western PA the past month. The Obama/Biden signs tend to stop when you get more than a couple miles off of the interstates and then you run into a very large amount of McCain/Palin signs.
Here in Eastern Ohio, I can say that Joe the Plumber (not Joe the Gaffer) has helped out. I ask blue collar guys and they won’t tell me who they are voting for, month ago they would have admitted to voting BHO.

According to G. Gordon Liddy, without a doubt and I agree, the CNN and other MSM polls are being rigged. Just like they were when Hillary Clinton was running again Obama, the media MISINFORMED the public using the polls and Hillary won the state in that contest at the time. The poll takers were embarrassed.

It may be that John McCain is far out ahead in most of the states — and that is why the poll-takers are asking some really strange questions. There’s also the Bradley effect — one that could give John McCain as much as a 4 to 5 point advantage in every state.

People love Sarah Palin. Just recently she drew 22,000 people at one campaign stop. And, thanks to Joe Biden; Obama is now, more than ever, seen as very inexperienced. Add to that the Colin Powell fake endorsement — one coming from a guy whose lying started the Iraq war. And, by the way, what ever happened to Obama’s refinement of his Iraq policy? I guess he was too busy entertaining Germans and Frenchies who don’t even speak English — did they even understand what Obama was saying? I think not.
Obama was so enthralled with himself that he chose NOT to visit our American troops at a German hospital — Obama’s just not very patriotic.

It makes more sense to vote for John McCain. McCain is honor, integrity, proven leadership and, above all, a well respected patriot.

God bless America.

Lot of McCain/Palin signs in NoVa right now–I wouldn’t bet on VA going blue.

Yossarian on October 21, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Dude. I’ve been traveling across PA for the last couple of days. I was in Lebanon last night. Tonight I’m in Morgantown. So far I’ve seen 3 Obama signs and hundreds of McCain signs. Either all the Obama supporters are closet supporters or the pollsters are going to embarrassed as hell on November 5.

Guardian on October 21, 2008 at 4:38 PM

McCain’s in Bucks County, where I live, today and Cindy was here yesterday with Rudy Giuliani. Today’s local paper has a huge headline and photo of Cindy at a rally yesterday, saying “Cindy Wows Crowd of 1000″. That’s looking out from all the newspaper boxes in this area today. Great, free advertising. There will be more tomorrow from McCain’s news-making new speech today.

I have 20 houses in my development, and 10 of them have McCain signs in front of them. There were only 2 Bush-Cheney signs in 2004. McCain is really popular here; Republicans are not as conservative socially but very conservative on fiscal and foreign policy. I can’t tell you how many people I meet who tell me they never liked Bush, and some did not even vote for him, because – of all things – his stance on stem cell research! But they are voting for McCain.

Obama lost Bucks County badly in the primary. There are a lot of PUMAs here too.

I stopped by HQ for a bumper sticker and was told they have volunteers and phone bankers aplenty. I just got contacted by the campaign for the GOTV effort, which will be huge here. If McCain can win Bucks County, he definitely has a shot at the state.

It makes more sense to vote for John McCain.

And therein lies the problem. Common sense has taken a back seat to Comedy Central.

My friends, John McCain is no Hillary Clinton. If McCain is putting all his marbles in PA … then he won’t have any marbles at the end of the day.

Turn out the lights … the parties over.

That’s 1000 in “McCain figures” … meaning there was 189 people there, 178 of them reporters.

Lot of McCain/Palin signs in NoVa right now–I wouldn’t bet on VA going blue.

That’s because there are a lot of them available down at the local McCain/Palin store … there are no Obama yard signs to be found anywhere and has been that way about the same time Palin’s unfavorables started to sink like a stone.

Hit the nail on the head.

Why should we do that. Let’s face it, either you will say he is in PA because he is afraid he is going to lose it, or he is stupid for not being in PA. ANd that he is still a muslim and a terrorist?

There are plenty of Obama signs around too, but believe me, I live in a VERY Democratic area. If there are that many McCain/Palin signs out in my neighborhood, Obama is in trouble.

WHAT ABOUT IOWA???

If Iowa is such a lock for Obama, why has McCain been there recently…

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2101526/posts

And why was Obama scheduled to go there this Thursday?…

The internal polling MUST be good news for the McCain camp. All over the map.

Something is going on here.

I can feel it.

And, it’s not a tingly feeling shooting up my leg.

HarryBalzac on October 21, 2008 at 7:26 PM

Heard somewhere today that in the primaries, Obama’s lead was typically overestimated by 7 points. Don’t know if it’s true, but if it is, and if the trend is also happening now, this race is closer than we think. Furthermore, we don’t know the racial make up of these polls either. If they are oversampling black voters, that’s going to skew the numbers too.

Anyway, though I don’t believe it’s real, let’s hope the Bradley effect is more real this year than ever before in the history of elections.

xblade on October 21, 2008 at 9:14 PM

Considering the problems we are having counting and verifying the popular vote nationwide on a single day across the country, there’s an argument for keeping the electoral college but going back to having the states pick electors by other means!

CK MacLeod on October 21, 2008 at 2:15 PM

Yes, exactly. The Founders were deathly afraid of mass democracy and the effect it would have on the Republic. Events seem to be bearing them out. The Electoral College, vestigial though it has become, is our last bulwark against mob rule.

MrLynn on October 21, 2008 at 10:20 PM

early voting in NC so far is heavy Democrat, hopefully the acorn voters are dumb enough to mark straight ticket Dem, because that isn’t a vote in Presidential race if they do
jp on October 21, 2008 at 1:34 PM

Huh? Why not?

MrLynn on October 21, 2008 at 10:21 PM

It’s a smart move. He should assume he will win Florida and North Carolina by small margins already and put most of his effort into winning Ohio and Pennsylvania. If McCain can take Ohio and Pennsylvania he will be in position to get the electoral votes needed for him to win
