McCain aide Mark Salter: Sullivan “seems to have lost his f***ing mind”

“To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle,” runs Sully’s tagline, quoting Orwell. Consider Salter’s struggle won. Doubtless this righteous salvo, too, will be assimilated into the unified field theory of Trig Trutherism, probably as evidence that Sully got too close to the truth in his scary smart insinuation about Palin buying off the hospital staff where Trig was delivered.

I’m not going to quote the money passage lest it discourage you from reading the whole worthwhile interview. I’ll quote this instead:

JG: Looking back, do you think there was something false about your salad days with the press?

MS: No, I’m trying not to draw general lessons about the press or us or the meaning of life out of all of this. Otherwise I’d despair. I think the media is driven by a need to see this history happen. And I think they’ve rationalized it, they think they’re on the level with McCain, that he’s not the old McCain. But he is the old McCain. He just doesn’t know what happened to the old press corps. They rationalize a reason to go get him. Every Obama attack they carry. Every McCain criticism of Obama they rush to blunt even before Obama does.

Tom Bevan reminds us Salter’s not the first campaign aide to detect this dynamic.

Blowback

Sadly the fact of Sullivan’s mental state IS news to Salter.

No wonder McCain is fighting an uphill battle.

Angry Dumbo on October 20, 2008 at 2:53 PM

Who really cares what this unhinged, unwatchable pervert thinks about anything?

Unlike pervert Barney Frank, he’s not in any position to influence anything.

At some point, you have to wage battles against people worth firing at. Sullivan’s no longer worth the ammo.

NoDonkey on October 20, 2008 at 2:55 PM

making excuses 14 days out. i’m glad fable 2 will be here tomorow.

lorien1973 on October 20, 2008 at 2:55 PM

And this is news to them?
They are so wrapped up in there campaign, they never saw what was happening in the real world.
Their ego was so grand, McCain thought he was the darling of the press, until he had to run up against a real liberal. The press loved McCain when he bit the hand that fed him…now that he knows that, it is time to bite back.
State that he is going to take down the democratic control of the economic committees, he is going to investigate them. Guiliani is the point man to “clean up Washington”, then let the liberals squeal…

So do I.

Sullivan is a f-ing clown. He goes 180 on 90% percent of the issues because G Bush doesn’t support gay marriage. Real man of principle. I haven’t looked at his site in years.

One would certainly hope… the Paris ad took about a week to have the full impact. Palin took something similar… any time now (I’m hoping with you)

Bingo. Clueless.

Fletch54 on October 20, 2008 at 3:10 PM

I know this is peripheral, but I don’t believe — and haven’t ever believed — that McCain bought into that “the press used to love him” meme.

I do believe McCain expected the press to be tough and lefty-oriented but, as in many past campaigns, still willing (if grudgingly) to report the truth.

There was a day when newsroom and editorial were separate, or at least more separated than now. Only in the past three major cycles, IMO, has bias become all-pervasive.

As in so many instances, McCain puts his faith in the essential decency of his fellow citizens. That he is, in this case, wrong, is not something to attack him for (as many commenters on HA do), but to pity our nation for.

And, if possible, it is something that must be changed back.

You just described the core issue in 80% of all organizational failures. Some of us made a really good living pointing out the obvious to people who became blinded by their insularity.

I was hoping it had already started and I was just not seeing it because I’m in Texas. We never see anything because we’re so red they don’t bother wasting the money here.

slug on October 20, 2008 at 3:15 PM

No, I’m trying not to draw general lessons about the press or us or the meaning of life out of all of this. Otherwise I’d despair.

Well, I’d say the behavior of the press is not surprizing. They have decided to conceal their bias as little as possible because of history, but the bias still exists. You should dispair for the MSM.

canopfor on October 20, 2008 at 3:17 PM

What the liberal Rinos do not understand about the press and the Americian people is if given the choice between a liberal and a liberal lite they will choose the full blown liberal everytime.

Bush was a liberal lite. his liberalism ran towards big business. The MAerican people got tired of getting screwed so they elected liberals that would give the rest of us checks too.

Only when the Americian people have a clear choice between less government and more government do they choose less government. If we are going to get big government regardless of the party we would rather have the party that will give us the most. It is simple logic exercise. Why would we vote for liberal lite? When we get nothing for it but higher prices, lower wages, and higher benifits costs and lower benifts payouts?

If we also got less taxes and less government then yeah that’s a good trade off. If we get more government and higher “fees” or a higher debt we might as well go full on liberalism.

The Rinos did not learn that after 2006 and tried to out liberal the liberals. It didn’t work for the dems when they tried to be conservative lite and it didn’t work for the reps. The Americian party expects their parties to follow the party line. We elect conservatives to be conservative and liberals to be liberals. Not morph into something else once they get elected.

All I want to know is where is my check and when will i get it. I have decided if Obama wins to “get laid off” and become a “victim” of the “evil capitalists”

I will do my part to destroy liberalism from within by sitting on my couch getting the “wealth of others”

unseen on October 20, 2008 at 3:18 PM

I think much of the media has a thumb hand on the scale crotch for of Obama.

Hand is the polite version.

McCain aide Mark Salter: Sullivan “seems to have lost his f***ing mind”

Heh, one must have a mind in order to lose it! Remember the anti-drug ads showing an egg frying with the tagline “this is your brains on drugs” well perhaps someone should remake that ad only with the tagline “this is your brain on lefty propaganda.”

Liberty or Death on October 20, 2008 at 3:22 PM

Salter sounds like I feel.

Yes, please share with us Andrew “Power Glutes” Sullivan’s, eehem, money shot. Pardon the requisite double entendre, but Sullivan is always stepping in it (among other things).

Fletch54 on October 20, 2008 at 3:10 PM

Cluelessness would be the condition of thinking that Andrew Sullivan’s ravings matter more than about 1/20th of an scintilla of an iota in the grand scheme of things. Why should the McCain campaign even acknowledge the existence of him, when there are several park bench schizophrenics saving really devastating things about the tiny aliens controlling the oil supply and dinosaur warlocks going through their mail?

The $160 (m)illion ad blitz was/is supposed to be a combined RNC-McCain thing, not a 527 thing. Supposedly, the 527s are hanging fire on Wright and possibly other matters.

CK MacLeod on October 20, 2008 at 4:36 PM

If the media had covered Biden half as much as Palin, Maverick would be winning by a landslide.

Doesn’t the RNC need to help those senate and house republiicans that are trying to help themselves win their elections? Why waste money on McCain if he isn’t going to be serious?

csdeven on October 20, 2008 at 6:50 PM

I would love to see Tinker Ball Sullivan, that graceless degenerate, go up to Todd Palin and ask if Sarah is really the baby’s mother. Todd would make Randy Andy’s Dentist a rich man (although I would think that he would not want Tinker Bell to bleed all over him).

Hilts on October 20, 2008 at 8:03 PM

In other news, the Pope is Catholic.

malan89 on October 20, 2008 at 8:15 PM

Even before Sullivan wanted to be Obama’s testicled baby mama, I thought he was overrated as hell. That was about 4 years ago. I’m surprised anyone on the right even pays attention to him. He reached Olberman level of dementia for me 2 years ago.

Not sure what platform you game on but Far Cry 2 is hitting on Wednesday…and if you like RPG’s and have a PC, The Witcher is a great game from a Polish studio.
